Woman Chases Kidnapper Riding Motorcycle, Rescues Daughter
Punch reports that there was confusion on Agbe Road in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State on Wednesday after a suspected kidnapper snatched a girl from her mother and attempted to escape with her on a motorcycle.
Our correspondent learnt that the mother of the two-year-old, while raising the alarm that her daughter was abducted by the kidnapper, chased the motorcycle.
PUNCH Metro gathered that her cry got the attention of some pedestrians and motorcyclists who also joined in the chase.
They were said to have caught up with the suspect, identified only as Haruna, dragged him from the motorcycle and beaten him to a pulp.
The 35-year-old suspect, who was stripped naked and injured, was reportedly handed over to policemen from the Oko Oba division.
A motorcyclist in the area, who gave his name only as Saheed, said the suspect, while at speed, dropped the girl when he realised the woman and other motorcyclists were on his trail.
He added that the decision did not pacify the mob, who were determined to get him.
He said, “The child was walking beside the mother around 3pm; they were heading for a shop. The suspect, who rode a motorcycle, suddenly grabbed the child and sped off. The woman (Click on the link below to read more)

Foreign AffairsSeveral Dead In Germany Shopping Mall Shooting by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 6:58pm On Jul 22, 2016
Punch reports that several persons have been killed and 10 wounded in a shooting at a shopping centre in Munich on Friday, German police said.
The mall near the southern German city’s Olympic stadium was surrounded by police after shots were fired.
“There is a major police operation under way in the shopping centre,” Munichpolice said on Twitter, urging people to avoid the area.
Emergency vehicles were seen in the streets outside, as passers-by looked on.
The shooting comes just days after a teenage asylum seeker went on the rampage with an axe and a knife on a regional train in Germany, injuring five people.
Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the teenager was believed to be a “lone wolf” attacker who appeared to have been “inspired” by the Islamic State group but was not a member of the jihadist network

BusinessAnxiety As Prices Of Kerosene, Cooking Gas Go Through The Roof by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 12:21pm On Jul 22, 2016
Punch reports that in recent weeks, cooking, for Mama Tobi, a mother of four, has become an unpleasant, absolutely unappealing endeavour.

Even as her eyes turned red and glistened with tears, the housewife tried to ward off smoke with her right hand that was already covered in soot. She coughed intermittently, as she tried to blow air to kindle a bigger fire for her cooking.

“For the past 20 minutes, I have been trying to ignite this fire to cook. Since I can no longer afford kerosene, I have been making use of newspapers and this has been very difficult. The newspaper always causes serious smoke; it cannot easily start fire without one blowing air into the charcoal pot. I am already tired, even when I have not started cooking,” she said in despair.
Mama Tobi’s helplessness mirrors the plight of several Nigerians, especially women, as the country grapples with an intense energy crisis.

Even as Nigerians battle with the depressing economy, the prices of kerosene and cooking gas, with which they cook their daily meals, are spiralling out of their reach.

Scarce and expensive
In most parts of the country, the prices of the two commodities have risen by over 140 per cent, thus making it almost impossible for most households to buy.

Kerosene presently sells at N300 per litre, while the 12.5kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), popularly called cooking gas, now costsN4, 000, as against N2, 300.

From east to west, from north to south, the long queue of consumers, waiting endlessly at filling stations to buy kerosene paints a picture of anguish. At the moment, most retail stations in the country have run out of kerosene. Where the product is available, a four-litre keg sells for N1200.

Painful deregulation
For several years, officially, kerosene had sold for N50 per litre until the federal government officially increased the price to N83 per litre. For a people that had for long contended with kerosene scarcity, they were used to queuing for long hours and even sleeping at the few retail stations that had the commodity. But the cutthroat price of N83 was akin to forcing them to swallow bile.

Despite complaining bitterly about the development, consumers were left with no choice than to gradually adapt to the situation by squeezing out as much as N200 for a litre in filling stations that had the commodity. But, as the country undergoes serious economic crisis, many Nigerians now see the new price regime as a sudden death sentence.

Most housewives and other users of the product can understand how a commodity that remains the lifeline of the masses would get so scarce and unaffordable. Low-income earners are also struggling to come to terms with the dilemma, even as no one is sure if the price of kerosene would ever be reviewed downwards.

The hike in the price of kerosene came at a time when the global price of crude oil had dropped to a record low, with the price of petroleum products, such as kerosene, fuel and diesel, among others, dropping significantly in many oil-producing nations.

Many homes that can’t afford the commodity are now forced to make do with firewood and charcoal, despite the inconvenience associated with their use.

Many people are worried that some black marketers might catch in on the situation to sell adulterated kerosene to unsuspecting consumers in order to make more profit. The consequences of such acts are dire. Many are those that have been dispatched to their early graves in the most gruesome manner, with property worth millions of naira destroyed by inferno.

Factors responsible
Many factors like inadequate storage facilities at the jetties, diversion of dual purposes kerosene (DPK) for conversion to aviation turbine kerosene (ATK), and the adulteration of kerosene with diesel (to be sold as pure diesel) have been blamed for the scarcity of kerosene.

According to reports, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) remains the only importer of kerosene. At the moment, kerosene supply through the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), an NNPC subsidiary, has reduced in recent weeks, with only one depot out of about 36 in Apapa loading kerosene.

Critics have noted that the NNPC had, perhaps, not been importing enough or that the corporation might lack the capacity to import sufficiently to meet the nation’s demand.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) had, in January, increased the price of household kerosene from N50 to N83 per litre. The agency stated that the price applied only to NNPC outlets. But none of the NNPC retail outlets sold kerosene at the approved price of N83 per litre in the first and second quarter that ended on June 30.

Strong indications also emerged that despite the liberalisation of the fuels markets, many marketers were yet to start importing kerosene as they continued to focus on the premium motor spirit, popularly known as petrol.

As the product remains unavailable at many filling stations, roadside vendors have cashed in to sell a litre for as much as N400.

Kerosene diversion for aviation use
The diversion of kerosene for aviation use remains one factor said to be responsible for the constant scarcity. Coincidentally, there’s little difference between the kerosene used to satisfy household needs and the JET A1 fuel used for aircraft.

According to investigations, the readiness of those in the aviation industry to pay much higher than household consumers made it a perfect diversion zone due to the huge turnover.

An oil giant plagued by scarcity
As a country, Nigeria has been plagued by years of kerosene scarcity, despite being one of the world’s major oil producing countries. And in all of these years, the masses have been made to believe that the skyrocketing price of the scarce commodity was a result of the global economic meltdown.

As the effects of kerosene scarcity bite harder on the masses, reprieve seems to be a forlorn dream, as the federal government has shown little commitment to combating the problem. And Nigerians are miffed that despite being blessed with crude from which kerosene is produced, the country still suffers.

According to reports, the national daily demand of kerosene is estimated to be between eight and ten million litres. But this quantity cannot be made available by the dysfunctional refineries in the county, according to economists
The refineries have been said to be meeting only 35 per cent local consumption, while the remaining 65 per cent is sourced abroad.

In the absence of refineries and the recent devastation of existing flow stations by militants in the Niger Delta region, Nigerians are being inflicted with untold hardship.

Alleged diversion of cooking gas
Nigeria, according to statistics from the Nigeria Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (LPGA), currently consumes 385,000 metric tonnes of cooking gas per annum, up from the 2013 consumption of 250,000, which was considered too low when compared with that of Ghana, Senegal, Cameroun and Kenya.

Critics have expressed dismay over how Liquefied Natural Gas, produced in the country, could become scarce and expensive.

Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of LPG Marketers (NALPGAM), Mr. Bassey Essien blamed the development on alleged diversion. He disclosed that officials of the Marine Transportation Department of the PPMC, in connivance with a private gas terminal, were frustrating the efforts of gas marketers to access to cheap products.

Warning against further increase in the price of gas, Essien told Daily Sun that the disruption in the LPG supply chain had led to the gradual rise of 20 metric tonne of gas from N2.4 million to N4.3 million within a week.

He explained that, rather than vessels berthing and discharging at the PPMC terminal, the officials deliberately created bottlenecks that made it extremely impossible for vessels to discharge. He said the vessels were forced to use the facilities of the private terminal, which in turn deliberately hiked prices.

“That is why we are using the opportunity to alert the concerned authorities to the effect of this unpatriotic trend because if we keep quiet, the price may hit N4 million for 20 metric tonnes,” he said.

The way out
Executive Vice Chairman of Techno Oil Limited, Mrs. Nkechi Obi, lamented that if the LPG challenge was not urgently addressed, the gains achieved over the years might be eroded.
She, however, noted that it was disheartening that Nigeria ranked the lowest in the per capita usage of LP, and urged the government to develop a local pricing template for gas as against the current international pricing regime.

Executive Director, Supply and Distribution, PPMC, Mr. Justin Ezeala, while blaming the current scarcity of cooking gas on obsolete state of the jetties, disclosed that most of the jetties were over 40 years old and not in tune with modern technology.

CrimeWhy Family Fed Day-old Baby To Dog by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 2:32pm On Jul 21, 2016
A family of five has been arrested by the police in Katsina state for allegedly feeding a day old baby boy to a dog as meal.
It was gathered that the incident happened at Saika village in the Batsari Local Government Area of the state.
The police gave the names of the suspects as Wosila Halilu (15), who is the mother of the baby; Wosila’s step brothers, Muhammadu Bello (45), Musa Bello (35), Umar Bello (27); and her mother, Faiza Umar (30).
It was gathered that a 27-year-old farmer, Musa Garba, alleged to have impregnated Wosila, was equally arrested for allegedly raping her.
Police sources revealed that trouble started for the family when Wosila gave birth to the baby boy after being allegedly impregnated by the farmer.
Wosila reportedly told the police and the family that the farmer lured her to his farm and allegedly raped her.
The sources added that Wosila’s pregnancy and the subsequent delivery of the baby boy were said to have been viewed as capable of bringing shame to the five-member family since she was unmarried.

BusinessNaira Sinks To 375/dollar, Economists Seek Policy Change by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 10:07am On Jul 21, 2016
Punch reports that economists on Wednesday advised the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to review their policies and introduce measures that would turn around the dwindling fortunes of the nation’s economy.
They spoke against the backdrop of the persistent fall of the naira against the dollar, with the local currency exchanging for 375 against the greenback at the parallel market on Wednesday; the imminent economic recession; and the spike in inflation to 16.5 per cent in June.
The Chief Executive Officer, Economic Associates, Dr. Ayo Teriba, who noted that the global fall in crude oil prices had made the nation’s oil revenue to nosedive, said there was a need for the Federal Government to seek foreign exchange from alternatives sources in order to cover for the shortfall.
He said Nigeria and its economic managers could not afford to fold their arms and allow the situation to get worsened. Rather, he said efforts must be geared towards implementing policies that would fight negative growth and inadequate liquidity at the interbank market.
Teriba said, “There are a number of things we can do as a country to boost our forex supply. Just the way India did some years ago, we can tap Nigerians in the Diaspora to contribute forex to save the situation at home. We can’t say we have done all when we have not done this.
“Billions of dollar can be raised through this. Saudi Arabia has just raised billions of dollars by issuing an Initial Public Offering on government agencies. Nigeria can raise billions of dollars in Foreign Direct Investment by issuing IPOs on government monopolies in critical infrastructure like rail, power transmission, oil and gas pipelines. There are a whole lot of things we can do to save the economy.”
A professor of Economics at the Olabisi Obabanjo University, Sherriffdeen Tella, who emphasised the need to stop the speculative attack on the naira, said the Federal Government needed to review its policies and boost local production.
He said, “All attempts must be made to increase local production, especially food items, and reduce importation of such. These, coupled with resistance to price hike, will keep prices down as the economy picks up gradually from reflationary economic policies and stable oil and electricity outputs.”
An economic analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, said there was the need to close the gap between the exchange rates at the official and parallel markets.
He said the government must also address the spike in inflation, negative GDP growth and naira depreciation effectively and urgently.
Meanwhile, the naira tumbled further against the dollar at the parallel market on Wednesday and closed at 375, down from 368 on Tuesday.
Foreign exchange dealers said the lingering scarcity of forex at the interbank market was shifting dollar demand to the black market.
The local currency had lingered between 346 and 348 at the parallel market before tumbling to over 360 this week, following the total floating of the naira by the CBN on Friday.
The local currency, however, eased slightly against the dollar at the official interbank market and closed at 294.23 on Wednesday, up from 294.87 on Tuesday.
Dealers said the local currency was stuck at 294.23 after just one transaction was carried out, with the supply of dollars drying up and no intervention by the CBN, Reuters reported.
Highlighting the state of the interbank market, an economist at Exotix, Mr. Alan Cameron, said, “Recent FX reforms have been enough to re-open the investment case for Nigeria, but there is still some uncertainty about the functioning of the market.
“The absence of volatility at N283/$ was interpreted as a sign that administrative controls were still in place; it remains to be seen if those will be fully removed.”
According to some analysts, foreign investors have welcomed the removal of currency controls by the CBN but many are still steering clear of the Nigerian economy until it shows signs of a concrete recovery.
“Most investors would like to see a more liquid FX market before resuming purchases of local assets,” the Head of Africa Strategy at Standard Chartered Bank, Samir Gadio, told Reuters.
He, however, added, “Given the significant discount of naira-settled futures, a number of offshore financial institutions and hedge funds could be tempted to get involved in the foreseeable future.”

EducationHow To Run Schools Profitably by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 6:38pm On Jul 20, 2016
Mr. Uyi Akpata, Country Senior Partner, Nigeria and Regional Senior Partner for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), West Market Area (the multinational accountancy and professional services firm headquartered in United Kingdom but said to be the 6th-largest privately owned organisation in the United States), hit the nail on the head, when he observed, in a keynote address delivered, on his behalf, by a partner, Mrs. Wunmi Adetokunbo-Ajayi, at the 2nd Annual Blossom Career and Entrepreneurship Summit convened by Best of the World Enterprises Limited (publishers of Blossom magazine), at Ikeja, Lagos, that “the changing dynamics in global economic climate has engulfed the Nigerian economy and put pressure on businesses. As the government grapples with how best to bring stability to the system, businesses including privately-owned schools continue daily on the struggle for survival.”
Some private school proprietors interviewed by The Sun Education totally agree with his observations. “For me, personally, I can say it (the economic downturn) is the ebola of our time in the sense that its effect on us has been quite astronomical,” Rev. Cannon Peter Bamidele, Principal, Pentecost College, Victory Estate, Iba, Lagos, laments. The school set up, about 15 years ago, for the Anglican Communion, by the Church of Pentecost, Festac Town is passing through hard times, he says. “We’ve been supplementing our budget to the tune of 250 per cent. For instance, we have in our budget, a basket of tomato for N7, 500. But the last one we bought was for N55, 000. That’s why I call the present economic hardship the ebola of our time.”
Not to talk of its effect on students enrolment. “Compared to this time, last year, we had over 100 enrolment though not all of them were offered admission. On our common entrance day, we usually have more than 150 candidates but in the last one, they were about sixty. People are still making enquiries trying to know whether our admission is still on and we would say come over, it still on. The same ebola virus is affecting the students. Talking about prompt payment of school fees, last year, we attained about 94 per cent compliance. But as the school prepares to vacate the second term holiday, their performance is about 80, if not 75 per cent. From the record from the bursary, we are battling between 75 and 80 per cent.”
“The enrollment of students has actually dropped,” Mr. Bode Lawal, proprietor of Helix Schools, Igando, Lagos, agrees. “For instance, parents who come in to make enquiries now react sharply to the school bill, and some do not bother to check back while others seek for discount. There has been noticeable delay in the payment of school fees putting management in tight corner. It has actually slowed down development for now. Among the measures put in place, now we have to relax payment deadline in order not to provoke parents from withdrawing their wards from school. Some are eventually able to meet up. But there are those, however, who have not yet completed payment even though examinations have started. We’ve had to reduce expenses.”
“The economic situation has reduced the number of enrollment as some students have withdrawn to public schools,” Mr. Hezekiah Olayode of De Ohms International School, Egan, Lagos, reports. “It has prevented us from increasing the salary of the teachers which they honestly deserve although we are able to pay their salaries. Payment of school fees has not been regular as the number of debtors is increasing. Prices of necessary amenities have increased and have affected the provision of such amenities. There has also been reduction in personal spending.”
It is in the light of these facts that the schools are calling for a downward review of taxes and levies being imposed on private schools by government and its agencies. “To me, private schools are being over-taxed,” Rev. Bamidele moaned. “You have to register; you have pay this and that levy. At the end of the day, go to public schools, they are not aware of such. But if at the end of it, we are getting what we should get from the government, good road, constant supply of electricity power and water, I don’t mind. They say we are being taxed based on our school population, but go to public schools and look at their population and come to this place and look at our population and compare. Their population is supposed to be more and yet we are paying more. That is to say, we are paying the unpaid bills of the government. But that is the type of country we happen to find ourselves. So? What can we do?”
“We’ve had numerous visits from local government officials demanding for certain questionable taxes which are burdensome to the system,” Lawal said. “Imagine, for instance, some coming in to ask the school for radio/TV tax. They also ask you to pay certain taxes that have already been paid to the state government. This is a case of double taxation.” “The government should reduce taxation,” Mr. Olayode pleads.
But in that keynote address presented on the second day of the summit and titled: “Curriculum Reform: Why the private sector should be interested,” Mrs. Adetokunbo-Ajayi listed, in the fifth part of the paper sub-titled: “Running Schools Profitably In the Face of Economic Challenges,” some measures private school owners can take to stay afloat in the daily struggle for survival. These she later elaborated on, in a chat with The Sun Education.
Proprietors and school managers must get smart and innovative: Look at cheaper way of achieving the same goal. For instance, if people can’t pay because you are asking for a lump-some, you can opt for payment by installments. Come up with creative ways of collecting your money.
Refinance or restructure existing debt: Some start a school and they expect that in the first three or four years they will start making profits. Because of all those challenges they have they go out to get loans from banks and those loans are getting difficult to pay because they have to service the loans and also pay them back. So come up with a plan and renegotiate your loan like any other business. In this day and age, what works is partnership. Look for somebody who has the same value, the same mindset and with whom you can share some of the deficits so that it can reduce the loan. If you can, lease out some of the assets you have or borrow in the meantime.
Plan all expenses properly. Develop a budget: People run businesses and there’s no difference between the business and themselves. They want to do some personal expenses; they put their hands in the school till because the school is not different from them. So? Place yourself on a salary; be an employee of the school. Collect your salary and then spend it the way you want. At the end of the year, if there are profits, then you can get dividends. Don’t run your life on the school money. Treat the school as a different legal entity. Have a budget and monitor it.
Consider the future working capital of the school. Are current sources of cash sufficient? Be realistic; if you have parents who pay on monthly basis, then you don’t have to assume that you will get all your cash in Month 1. Plan your cash flow. Don’t just wake up and say you can’t pay salary; meanwhile you’ve gone to buy one huge screen that could have been postponed. Know when you need cash so that you can know whether the money you are expecting for that period will be enough for you to meet your working capital needs. Stretch the expenses to take out the ones that are not important.
Ensure you are in good standing with the government, viz, taxes licences, permits, etc: In these days, when government agencies are looking for extra money, you don’t want them to come and stop your school from operating. If government is harassing you, it can deter some categories of people from bringing their children to your school. So, determine from the onset how much you need to pay and set money aside for that. You don’t have to pay everything at once but you don’t have to wait until someone comes up tomorrow to say you owe for five years. They can take you out of business. So? Plan your expenses. Have a payment plan for ones that are critical.
Cut costs to the minimum efficient level. Reduce expense without impacting quality: Cut your costs without affecting the quality of people who deliver your products, in this case, your teachers. If parents are complaining about the quality of your teachers you can retrain them without increasing your cost by having experts in various subjects on offer by your school teach other less-knowledgeable teachers. Deliberately gather them and have the subject specialist, say, in English or Mathematics, teach others handling the same subjects in other classes. The fact that you can’t send them abroad for further studies doesn’t mean you can’t give them continuous education. Gather them in a class and let somebody from their own midst teach them. Do it once a month; let school close early. During that time you can serve them soft drinks and have fun.
Never compromise on (Click on the link below to read more)

CrimeBehold, Federal Cattle Territory, FCT! by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 6:12pm On Jul 20, 2016
In mid-April, 2016, soldiers of the Guards Brigade of the Nigerian Army arrested 92 Fulani herdsmen in Abuja. The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the brigade, Captain Bashir Jajira, after the arrest, had revealed that 36 of the suspects were arrested at a military checkpoint between the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa State.
The suspects were said to have told the soldiers that they were on a mission to recover their stolen cows. About 56 others who were also armed were arrested by the soldiers at a military checkpoint at Dantata, on the Abuja Airport Road. One pump action gun, 19 cartridge dane guns, 118 cartridge ammo, 28 cutlasses, three jack knives, 14 sticks, seven torch lights, certificate of occupancy, assorted charms and hard drugs, were recovered.
Abuja, Nigeria’s symbol of authority and the government seat of power, is gradually loosing its serenity and innocence. The hostile take-over of communities in some parts of the country by marauding Fulani herdsmen, is gradually berthing in the nation’s capital. From the revered Three Arms Zone, leading to the National Assembly, the Presidential Villa and the Supreme Court, to other parts of Abuja metropolis, herdsmen are taking over and fast too.
The first major confrontation between Fulani herdsmen and Abuja residents occurred in late December 2012. More than 10 herdsmen were reportedly killed, while farms worth millions of naira were destroyed during the fracas. Again, in March 2014, scores of people were killed in Garam, a suburb of Abuja during a clash between the natives and herdsmen. Equally, in October 2015, suspected armed robbers were said to have killed seven herdsmen in Ketti-Pyakassa, a suburb of Abuja.
Investigation revealed that clashes and atrocities committed by and against the herdsmen in Abuja were underreported. Virtually everyone now lives in fear of the Fulani herdsmen. Even the status of Abuja has not insulated it from the worrisome situation. Activities of these herdsmen, who use their business to stop those of others, are prominent in the FCT and concerned residents have repeatedly asked if the nation’s seat of power has been converted into A Federal Cattle Territory.
In Abuja, herdsmen have virtually taken over major highways, residential areas and gardens. Apparently emboldened by the failure of the FCT authorities to wield the big stick, herdsmen in early 2012 started making inroads into Abuja. This came as a rude shock to residents and motorists who were daily harassed by the unruly herdsmen. Unfortunately, the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, and the security agencies did not act swiftly to confine the herdsmen to dedicated routes or ranches outside the metropolis.
Soon, the daring herdsmen took the city of Abuja like an army of occupation. During peak periods, they blocked the major highways and sometimes, attacked pedestrians, with cow dung littering the roads while residents of the neighborhoods now live in fear. Some residents warned against looming tragedy. A resident jocularly noted that only the Presidential Villa has escaped the cattle invasion.
In a belated attempt to save its face, the FCT administration in September, issued a warning to the herdsmen to stop operating within the metropolis. It stressed that failure to heed the warning would attract severe penalties. The FCT authorities advised herdsmen to make use of designated areas for grazing of their cattle as spelt out in the Abuja Master Plan.
The immediate past permanent secretary of the FCT, John Chukwu, who gave the directive through the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), demanded full compliance with the order, stressing that Abuja city was not meant for cattle grazing. He stated that the directive was induced by improper grazing of cattle in the city centre and the hazards posed to road users.
But almost a year after the order was handed down, the activities of Fulani herdsmen have not abated. Surprisingly, the FCT administration has not taken further action to stop the rampage.
Last week, there were reports that the National Stadium, Abuja, was invaded by Fulani herdsmen with their cattle. According to the report, the herdsmen who came in groups overwhelmed the stadium security officials who tried to stop them.
“It has been a routine for these herdsmen to horde their cows to this place for grazing, especially in the last one year. They invade the stadium at will and it seems nobody is ready to stop or caution them,” a security personnel attached to the stadium was quoted by the report.
As for the FCT minister, Muhammad Bello, his critics argue that he is not so keen at confronting the herders or even handling the daunting challenges facing an emerging capital city like Abuja. Their claim is based on the fact that since his appointment last November, he has not constituted his team. He has not appointed special advisers or mandate secretaries. He runs a one-man show.
Respective agencies saddled with the responsibility of tending to different segments of the city have been rendered useless. Apart from occasional courtesy visits in his office, the minister has little or no other assignments to do. Sure this situation may not be unconnected with the economic crunch in the country. The FCT leadership is yet to focus on satellite towns and area councils where a large number of FCT residents stay. His critics also accuse him of not effectively supervising area councils.
Activities of Fulani herdsmen, which are threatening the peace of the city do not exempt the administrative building of the FCT Administration. During weekends, herdsmen ply their trades unhindered in and around the FCT Administration secretariat. Roads are littered with cow dungs and in some instances cars parked by roads are damaged by the cows.
While residents and motorists cry, the FCT minister is yet to speak on activities of herdsmen or unveil his plan on how to address the worrisome situation that is fast threatening the peace of the territory. The agency saddled with the responsibility of tackling the menace, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) is handicapped. Some of the field operatives of the board who spoke to Daily Sun complained bitterly about poor funding and lack of operational vehicles. They also complained of threats by the herdsmen to attack them.
The development is fueling tensions. Residents are scared and security agents are keeping mute. Residents who expressed frustrations are worried that the territory could be turned into another killing field by the marauding herdsmen if their cows are attacked by angry Abuja dwellers. Whether or not the FCT Minister will (Click on the link below to read more)

SportsLe Guen Rejects Eagles Job Over Russia 2018 Target by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 2:54pm On Jul 20, 2016
Daily Sun reports that French tactician, Paul Le Guen has chickened out of the Super Eagles job that was offered him on a platter of gold on Monday by the nation’s soccer governing body, NFF.

Le Guen, according to the NFF declined to accept the offer on the grounds that he does not want to be given any target in spite of the 44 thousand euros he was to pocket as monthly wages. The NFF had as part of the contract terms insisted on a clause that Le Guen must not only qualify the country for the Russia 2018 World Cup, but reach the last eight of the mundial with the Eagles.
Apart from the target clause, Le Guen also wanted to play another Oliseh as he said he would not be living in the country as Eagles manager.

The NFF in a release signed by its media committee chairman, Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande stated: “In truth, the Technical and Development Committee perused the profiles of all the coaches who submitted applications and found Paul Le Guen suitable for the post. But during final negotiations, he objected to being given a target and also did not wish to live in Nigeria, which was a sore point with the Board.”

PoliticsI’m Not Joining APC –akpabio by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 11:18am On Jul 19, 2016
Daily Sun reports that the Senate Minority Leader and former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio said he was not making clandestine moves to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

Senator Akpabio while speaking exclusively to Daily Sun through his media aide, Anietie Ekong, said he was aware of the rumours, especially in the social media of his attempts to cross carpet and join the ruling APC.

Ekong said Akpabio’s camp was aware of the rumours, but stressed that the rumours were being spread by APC propagandists. It was learnt that the suspect, whose name had yet to be ascertained, had lodged in a room in the hotel – Taola Hotel – with his girlfriend around 9.30pm on Friday.
He was said to have paid for one hour which was supposed to elapse around 10.30pm.
Workers of the facility, however, became worried when it was 12am and the guests did not check out of the hotel.
The manager of the hotel, identified only as Ahmadu, was said to have gone to check the room only to discover that the woman was dead, while the suspect had fled.
Ahmadu reported the case at the Ikotun Police Division, while the remains of the victim were deposited in a morgue.
A resident of the area, Jibola Adesina, said no one could explain how the suspect escaped from the hotel.
He said, “The police came to remove the corpse. No one can say how the man managed to escape from the hotel because it has only one entrance.”
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man had said he wanted to buy something outside the hotel and fled afterwards, adding that the management suspected something was wrong when he did not return.
“I learnt from one of the workers in the hotel that the man came out of the room around 10pm. He said he wanted to buy something outside. He left, but did not return. It was when they waited in vain for his lover to step out that they decided to go into the room. She was found dead,” he said.

Gunmen Abduct Lagos Monarch, Baby, Two Others
Punch reports that some gunmen have abducted the traditional ruler of Iba community, Lagos State, Oba Goriola Oseni – the Oniba of Iba land.
Also abducted were a woman, her three-month-old baby, and a businessman.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the gunmen, who were suspected to be militants, stormed the community in two speedboats on Saturday around 10.30pm.
They were said to have shot dead one of the palace guards and a motorcycle rider.
The monarch’s wife, Kuburat, who sustained gunshot injuries, was reportedly rushed to a hospital for treatment.
A resident, Ifayemi Yomi, said the gunmen announced their presence with sporadic gunshots which made everyone to scamper to safety.
He said, “The gunmen came in at about 10pm, shooting indiscriminately. They had earlier gone to the Agbede area of Ikorodu, and tried to abduct some oil dealers; but they failed. They then made their way to Iba through the waterways.
“They went to the palace and dragged the traditional ruler out. The residents tried to prevent their entry into the palace and one of them, who worked with the Neighbourhood Watch, was shot dead. A motorcycle rider was also killed.”
Another resident, identified only as Muyiwa, said people in the area had started leaving in droves.
He said, “My wife and I initially thought vigilantes were at work, but with the persistence of the shooting, we sensed the community was under attack.
“The gunshots woke up my two children. For one hour, I was confused. My wife, the children and I held on to one another. It was this morning (Sunday) that I heard that the king was abducted by militants. They killed his guard and shot his wife in the leg.”
A source explained that the community had become volatile due to the operations of the militants, calling on the Lagos State Government and security agencies to rise up to the challenge.
He said, “It seems the militants are becoming too powerful for the government. If measures are not taken to check their excesses, they will take over all the riverine areas in Lagos and Ogun states.

“For now, I am leaving my house until the government is able to bring the situation under control.”

CrimeCourt Remands Hairdresser, Boyfriend For Fighting Over Sex by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 3:40pm On Jul 15, 2016
Two lovers, Emem Asuquo and Olugbenga Yakubu, have been remanded in prison by a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court sitting on Lagos Island for alleged public disturbance.
They were arraigned on Wednesday on four counts of assault and conduct likely to cause breach of the peace before Magistrate A.A. Adefulire.
PUNCH Metro learnt that an altercation broke out after 31-year-old Asuquo insisted that Yakubu, 51, use a condom before having sex with her, but he reportedly declined the request.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Yakubu, while driving along the Lekki-Epe Expressway at about 7pm on July 6, had offered Asuquo, who was going towards Lakowe in Ibeju-Lekki, a ride.
They were said to have exchanged phone numbers and promised to meet each other later in the night.
Yakubu, a civil servant, was said to have picked up the hairdresser at her home in Ajah around 2am the next day and took her to his house on Adeyinka Oyekan Street, Abraham Adesanya Estate, Ajah.
“On getting to his house, he entertained me after which we went inside his room. He said he wanted me to have sex with him. I told him I would collect N30,000 and he agreed. I asked him to use a condom but he said he did not have one. So, I told him to take me back home in his car,” Asuquo said.
She explained that the man dropped her off at VGC Roundabout, saying he did not have enough fuel in his car.
She said she called a taxi driver to pick her up from the area.
It was learnt that a scuffle ensued when she requested Yakubu to wait for her until the taxi driver arrived for fear of being robbed.
“When he refused, I removed his car key. He was beating me when the taxi driver and two others arrived and they intervened. He injured me in the eye. I also used a stone to smash the windscreen of his car,” she added.
Our correspondent learnt that Yakubu later reported the incident at the Ajah Police Division, and Asuquo was arrested.
Yakubu, in his statement to the police, said Asuquo had called the driver and other occupants of the taxi to beat him up, adding that he sustained injuries.
He said, “She followed me to my house, but refused to make love with me after buying her drinks. At a point, she started screaming that I should take her back to her house. When we got to the roundabout, she removed my car key and held my shirt. Two men and a lady she called came in a Golf car and started beating me.
“I held Asuquo by the hair and began punching her while the two men did same to me. In the end, they injured me and broke the windscreen of my car.”
A police prosecutor, Inspector Philip Osijale, subsequently arraigned the duo before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on four counts of assault and breach of the public peace.
Osijale told the court that the charges contravened sections 54, 171, 349 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Punch reports that a textile trader in Gbagi Market, Ibadan, Oyo State, Kudirat Oduola, has been beaten to death by thugs allegedly sent by a co-trader who lent her N2m.
Our correspondent learnt that the deceased, who was three months pregnant, had approached one Oriekun to assist her with the money to buy textile materials.
The deceased’s brother, Abdulahi Asimolowo, said Oduola paid the N2m debt five months after it was borrowed, adding that Oriekun, however, insisted that she would collect N400,000 as interest for five months.
He said, “It is a common practice among traders at Gbagi Market to assist one another with money to buy goods. No interest is usually charged. This was what happened between my sister and Oriekun.
“Oriekun assisted my sister with the sum of N2m, which was refunded after five months. She, however, insisted that she would collect interest on the money for another five months. She said she would collect N400,000 per month. She also threatened the deceased to consider herself a walking corpse if she refused to pay the interest.”

EducationAdamu Advocates Cultural Tolerance by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 1:37pm On Jul 14, 2016
The vice chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, has called on Nigerians to embrace cultural tolerance.

Adamu, who is a professor of Media and Cultural Communication, made the advocacy Wednesday in Abuja during an interaction with the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Institute of Cultural Orientation (NICO), Professor Barclays F. Ayakoroma, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

“It is commonly said ‘Let us forget our differences,’ but the right thing to say is ‘Let us accept our differences,’ since it is the acceptance of our differences that will make us tolerate one another because it is our differences that make us the people that we are and there is beauty in diversity. God who created us, created us different people. We must accept those differences. We should collaborate to find a way of removing this stereotype through cultural acceptance,” he said.

“What I urge us to do is to find a way to remove the stereotype that we have against one another. When we see a person, instead of looking at how useful that person may be to us, what we see is this person is Yoruba, this one is Hausa; this one is Ijaw, and so on. A bad person is a bad person no matter the tribe he comes from,” Adamu added.

Ayakoroma, who lauded the achievements of Adamu as a cultural ambassador urged the vice chancellor to explore avenues for possible collaboration between NICO and NOUN in furthering the cause of cultural orientation in Nigeria.

The executive secretary opined that NOUN has made a name nationally, continentally, and globally and that working in collaboration with the university would give credence to what NICO offers and enhance the acceptability of the certificate which the institute offers its graduates.

Responding to Ayakoroma’s request, Adamu directed his Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Patrick Eya, to set machinery in motion and explore within acceptable academic standard of the National Universities Commission (NUC), the possibility of mounting a post graduate diploma in Cultural Orientation in the university in collaboration with NICO.

He also pledged his commitment to mounting the programme as soon as he gets clearance from the NUC.

InvestmentCourt Voids Hike In Electricity Tariff by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 7:09pm On Jul 13, 2016
Punch reports that Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday entered judgment against the National Electricity Regulation Commission and electricity distribution companies in a suit opposing the Federal Government’s bid to increase electricity tariff.

Justice Mohammed Idris declared as null and void any hike in electricity tariff that did not comply with the provisions of the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act 2004.

The judge declared the decision of the defendants to embark on electricity tariff hike as hasty and ordered immediate reversal to the status quo.

He also awarded a cost of N50,000 against the respondents in favour of the plaintiff in the suit.

The suit was filed last year May by a Lagos-based lawyer, Toluwani Adebiyi, following announcement of proposed electricity tariff hike by the then Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi.

Adebiyi had urged the court to stop any hike in electricity tariff until there had been a meaningful and significant improvement in power supply to at least 18 hours in a day in most Nigerian communities.

Justice Idris had since May 28, 2015 restrained NERC from giving effect to the proposed hike pending the determination of the suit.
In his final judgment in the suit on Wednesday, the judge berated the commission for embarking on the proposed tariff hike despite the court order.

He said one suspect, known as Adam, was captured several weeks ago while living in a 40-foot container in a church.
"Adam is one of the top most wanted Boko Haram members on the wanted list of the military. HealthTips To Developing Bigger Breasts Naturally by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 10:03pm On Jul 05, 2016
Do you want bigger breasts? Do you think exercise might give them to you? If so, here's a true story that might interest you. (Of course, we asked permission to print this story for you, and the names are changed to protect privacy).

A young lady asked me this, regarding exercise and fitness personal training. Her question was "If I train with you, will my breasts get bigger? Will they lift themselves up, become firmer and fuller like they used to be when I was younger? Truthfully, I hesitated momentarily, before answering this one. Yes, I really wanted to motivate her, as well as gain her service as a new fitness client. And, I also wanted to stimulate her existing desire to re-kindle her fire and passion for exercise. My greatest personal satisfaction comes from seeing other people improve themselves, especially when their benefits come from advice, education, suggestions, and/or training techniques that I have brought to them.

However, my ethics are much stronger than my desire for profit. Ethics in the diet, exercise, and personal fitness training industry are an extremely valuable commodity. They denote character and intent to provide quality service. Therefore, I smartly hesitated before answering the young lady's question. I could see the look in her eyes. She may have wanted me, as a trainer, to say, "Yes, of course your breasts will become larger, firmer, and fuller, just like they used to be. All you have to do is exercise." The truth, however, is quite surprising and perhaps contrary to your probable expectations.

As I began to research the subject, "natural breast enhancement," many truths became obvious, almost instantly. Of course, you find your most immediate replies from Internet sources. Members of the general public, many of whom have no accreditation, formal education, or long-term training expertise, are free to create such highly opinionated responses. Although these individuals (and some small businesses, too) may mean well, they simply lack accuracy, especially in the art and science of conducting skilled research.

Now, let me tell you what I noticed right away. Upon my first query on natural breast enhancement, several web sites displayed conflicting information. For example, one site said that herbs, minerals, and vitamins would cause a woman's breasts to enlarge. The next site said that "exercise" would boost breast size by at least one "letter." A third said that "nothing" would help because genetics alone determined breast sizes. A fourth claimed that wearing pressure clamps all day long would increase breasts by at least two cup-sizes.

As you might already see, the offerings, replies, and suggestions included various alternatives, methods, and techniques. There were suction and pressure devices, creams, encapsulated hormone products, immune system "enhancers," nutrient supplements, etc. A few sites even boasted about "special secret exercises." (Of course, you had to pay first before they told you what these unique, new "special secret exercises" were, if any.) The exercise science industry says nothing about "special breast enhancement exercises." This type of information is only hype. Don't buy into it. Stick with science. Stick with accredited information sources. Maintain your knowledge through licensed, formally trained professionals. Especially, deal only with specialists who maintain high "ethical" standards.

You may be interested to know this. Here is the basic outcome of a comparison between the various natural ingredients associated with "breast health." These ingredients were different from those that claimed to increase "breast size." If you are a candidate for such products, you must be meticulous about the phrasing of such descriptions. There's a saying on the Internet that, "You have to already know what you want, before you can find it." In other words, asking for "breast health" gives you different results than "breast enhancement" or "breast enlargement," or even "natural breasts."

For example, properties of nutrients claimed to exert "anti-cancer" functions. Still, others were reportedly claiming to make the breast expand (or, at least "appear" to) swell in size. Certainly, you could rationalize the following. Some nutrients do indeed tend to protect your cells from deterioration. At least, there are some that may offset the formation of cancerous cells. This, however, does not automatically mean that the tissue will appear larger and/or grow bigger. When you refine your "purpose," you are more likely to find something that can provide you with a satisfactory solution.

Do You Want the Bottom Line on "Natural" Breast Enlargement?

There really is "nothing" available and practical that will give you such results. The only thing that possibly comes close to achieving this for you is the "pressure clamp" concept. That is, you wear pressure clamps all day long for about 20 to 30 days non-stop. Surely, you can see how many people cannot arrange the time for such an activity. Convenience is certainly a factor that affects you. And, can you withstand the discomfort of this type of breast enlargement technique? At least, this idea has some merit, but it's still not your most practical and achievable solution. Now, consider the following.

In a "natural" way, nothing exists that will actually make your breasts firmer, fuller, or larger. You can, however, protect the "natural health" of your breasts. Additionally, with exercise, you can naturally increase the size and strength of the MUSCLE layers BENEATH your breasts. These muscle layers (called "pectorals"wink can give you a slightly more firm appearance. This is true only because the muscles themselves become more firm, NOT your mammary glands. In reality, breasts consist of fat tissue, not muscle. Fat can seldom be "firm" to the touch, and fat is hardly likely to give you a firm, solid appearance.

Now, "think outside of the box" for just a moment. Returning to our original story line, the ironic thing is that the woman you read about already possessed very large breasts.
Thousands of "decent-sized" ladies would "kill" to have what she already has. However, the feeling that your breasts may not be nice enough also comes from other facts. Your surrounding body parts can also lack THEIR proper shape and symmetry. Your overall fitness (including body fat ratio, flexibility, strength and endurance) may be poor or below average.

So, here's a breast enlargement/enhancement/health solution that you can count on, virtually, forever. BECOME TOTALLY FIT. For example, with the woman you read about above, reducing waist size would conversely increase breast size appearance. Do you understand how this works? FamilyA Quick Guide On How To Get Pregnant by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 9:24pm On Jul 05, 2016
Congratulations! So you’ve decided to take the big step into becoming a parent. While it is one of the most important things a person can do in their life, it is also the most challenging and the first challenge is conceiving. Many people assume that once they stop taking contraception they will immediately conceive. Our bodies are slightly more complicated than that and this guide on how to get pregnant will give you tips on the best methods and the timing to get pregnant.

First things first
The first thing you must do when you make the decision to have a baby is to visit your gynecologist. This is a vital step as you will need a German measles vaccination if you haven’t had one already, and to make sure you are receiving enough folic acid to prevent birth defects. The gynecologist will also answer any of your questions and will provide you with further tips on how to get pregnant.

When to do it
The best time is dependent on your ovulation cycle. Your ovulation period lasts six days – the first five days before and leading up to the sixth day in which you ovulate – and it’s during this time at which you are most fertile. Your ovulation period is usually midway between your menstrual cycles which for most women is about 14 days before their next period is due. This is usually the best time to get pregnant but if it doesn’t work for you, another tip is to wait until days 10 and 18 of your cycle (day 1 as the first day of your period) and have intercourse every other day during this time. This way, intercourse and ovulation are bound to coincide.

At-home ovulation kits
If you want to be more precise and exact, you can purchase an at-home ovulation prediction kit which uses your body temperature to determine whether you are ovulating. It is said that when you are ovulating, your body temperature increases by 0.8 degrees. These kits can give you warning from one to one and a half days in advance as to the best time to get pregnant.

How often?
A frequent concern for those whom want to know how to get pregnant is how often to try. It is a fact that the more frequently a man ejaculates, the lower his sperm count, becomes. So, those who are trying for a baby often have sex every few days to build this sperm count. However, this isn’t necessary. Even though the sperm count may be lower, it is still high enough for pregnancy to occur. The best tip is to make love when you want to. Remember that having a baby should be fun too, so try not to focus too much on how often and when. Of course those who are only having intercourse once a week will significantly lessen their chances.

Not working?
If after a month or two you are (Click on the link below to read more)

PoliticsDon’t Islamize Nigeria, Human Rights Group Appeals To President by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 8:47pm On Jul 05, 2016
Daily Sun reports that the Human Rights Writers Association (HURIWA ) has set its sights on the Minister of Interior, General Abdulrahman Danbazau (rted.), accusing him of flouting section 10 of the Nigerian Constitution (as amended) by taking directives from a private religious leader – the Sultan of Sokoto – in adjusting a national holiday from two to three days.
The group also faulted the Federal Government for creating a considerable degree of uncertainty and causing commotion to businesses and the private sector by the unilateral and impromptu declaration of the extension of the public holiday to mark the end of the fasting season by Muslims.
HURIWA in a statement jointly issued by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and Media Affairs Director, Miss Zainab Yusuf, said the Constitution clearly provided that no particular religion should be elevated to a status of a state religion.
The Rights group said the wording of the official press statement authorised by the Interior Minister conveyed the impression that the government has tacitly adopted one of the two foreign religions as its official religion. This the group said is absolutely unconstitutional and must be denounced forthwith.
It further said that the business community in other parts of the globe will see the country as economically unstable if the political leaders were allowed to get away with the political vice and criminality of arbitrarily extending days of national public holidays at the whims and caprices of certain persons with ulterior religious sentiments.‎
“We are worried that at a time that President Muhammadu Buhari is accused of appointing and allocating almost 80 percent of all the strategic military and paramilitary positions to HAUSA/FULANI Moslems from the North, and at a time the entire maritime and crude oil sector are dominated by appointees by Buhari from his Northern region, the Minister of Interior who recently appointed an entirely Moslem and Northern heads of agencies under the Interior Affairs ministry is conveying this sinister impression that Islam is now the official religion. We condemn this total (Click on the link below to read more )

SportsRio Olympics: Brazil To Distribute 9 Million Condoms by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 5:45pm On Jul 05, 2016
Punch reports that Brazil’s government will hand out nine million condoms for free around Rio de Janeiro during the Olympics in August, a push meant to encourage safe sex and also defend the Amazon rainforest.
Rio’s local Olympic organising committee said about 450,000 of the sustainably-produced condoms would be destined for athletes and staff housed in the Olympic Village.
The rest will be made widely available to the many visitors who will be arriving in the city in just a few weeks, the Health Ministry said.
All the condoms to be distributed are produced by Natex, a factory in the western Amazonian state of Acre, deep in the rainforest near Brazil’s border with Bolivia.
The factory, run by the Acre state government, uses latex gathered from Amazon rubber trees by tappers who are employed by a government-run program designed to protect their traditional livelihood, foster sustainable use of the rainforest and deter illegal loggers.
The tappers see themselves as guardians of the rainforest.
On a recent outing, Raimundo Mendes de Barros, a 71-year-old lifelong rubber tapper with a stark white beard, gathered the milky-white latex dripping into metal buckets hooked at the base of countless trees. Above, the tropical sun was filtered by the Amazon canopy.
Barros spoke with pride about the fierce fight he and other sustainable rubber tappers wage to maintain their craft.
“Our condom factory, aside from guaranteeing a fair price for the rubber, employs hundreds,” he said.
“It gives the world a product – the condom – that will be very present there in Rio, to fight disease and help with birth control.”
For decades, tappers like Barros (Click on the link below to read more)

PoliticsForgery Allegation: Court Ruling Has Vindicated Us – Senate by JoelNkantaBlog(op): 11:28pm On Jul 04, 2016
Vanguard reports that the Senate, yesterday, said it had been vindicated by last Thursday’s ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, which described the forgery case filed against its presiding officers as an abuse of court process and a decision taken against public interest.
In a statement by its spokesman, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate said the ruling by Justice Kolawole further confirmed that Mr. Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, was acting out a personal and partisan script in filing the charges, while simply abusing his position as the nation’s chief law officer.
Malami’s personal and pecuniary interest It asked Malami to address the issue of his personal and pecuniary interest in the case as he was a counsel to the aggrieved senators who decided to externalise the issue of election of the leadership of the upper chamber of the National Assembly after they failed in their bid to get their preferred candidate elected.
The Senate said: “It has now become obvious from the ruling of Justice Kolawole and in the facts of the matter before the Federal High Court, Malami was the one who advised his clients to report the matter to the Police and now that he has become AGF, he decided to use his constitutional powers to pursue private interest by filing a criminal case in the FCT High Court against the subsisting ruling of a court of co-ordinate jurisdiction.
“ When the Senate invited the AGF to come and throw light on the forgery case, it was not to challenge his right to file, take over or discontinue any criminal case but for him to explain the issues of conflict of interest, abuse of office, disrespect of a subsisting order of a court and violation of the principle of separation of powers which are being raised against him.
“When his supporters jumped up and started abusing the Senate over the invitation, we know that our stance that an Attorney General, and, indeed, any public officer for whose office public funds are appropriated can be invited by the Senate and the House of Representatives to explain certain issues, is on firm, constitutional ground. Revelation from court’s ruling
‘’That is in spite of the fact that the AGF is responsible to the President who appointed him. Now, the revelations from the ruling of the court of competent jurisdiction have shown that this AGF has a lot to explain to the public, if not to his appointor.
“It says a lot about an AGF who, despite being aware that the court had ordered him and the Inspector of General of Police not to take any further action on the matter during the pendency of the civil suit still, went ahead to initiate the criminal case on the Police report which is the subject of the civil case.
‘’The judge rightly described Malami’s action as desperate haste that was not in public interest. “It should be noted that Malami’s name is still on the list of lawyers defending Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi and others in the Federal High Court.
We invite all Nigerians, including those shouting over whether it was right for Senate to invite the AGF or not, to read the ruling of Justice Kolawole and conclude whether Malami is still fit to be AGF in a government which canvasses change and rule of law.
“Our position as a law making chamber is that the Office of AGF is a sensitive and strategic one being the only other office in the executive arm apart from that of President and Vice President to which the constitution specifically assigns some roles and powers.
‘’We call on him to respect the ruling of the court and to redeem the integrity of his office and admit his error by invoking his power under Section 174 (1) as noted in the ruling of the honourable judge.”
“In conclusion, the Senate is calling on all parties, Mr. Malami, the Attorney General inclusive, to heed the wise, timely and apt advice of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that ‘it is time to move on.’”
‘’Truly, Nigeria needs our collective energy to address the various challenges, notably increasing poverty, hunger, youth unemployment, general insecurity and kidnapping, among others, which are time bombs that we can only ignore at our own collective peril.”
