Crime / Hospital Wants Nurse Prosecuted For Attempted Sale Of Baby by JoelNkantaBlog: 1:24pm On Oct 18, 2017
The management of ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano has disowned a nurse, Mrs. Itohan Pius, who was arrested by the police while allegedly attempting to sell a five-year-old boy for N15,000.

Briefing newsmen in Kano on Tuesday, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Atima Mayor, said the suspect acted on her own volition, stressing that she must be made to face the music.

According to Mayor, the nurse’s action of buying and selling a child constituted a criminal offence under the laws of the land.

He said, “The act or action of such a staff member does not represent our philosophy and belief as a law-abiding institution, which was founded on Christian ethics and convictions.’’

The CMD noted that since the case was with the police, the organisation was convinced that Pius would face the full wrath of the law.

He disclosed that the management of the hospital, on its own part, was considering punishing the nurse for rubbishing the image of the hospital.

The police had on October 10, 2017 apprehended Pius following a tip-off by one Hajiya Fatima.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government on Tuesday demoted two senior health workers in the Karaye Local Government Area of the state for deliberately hoarding the free anti-malaria drugs provided by the state government for free distribution in some designated health centres.

According to its developer, the hyper-realistic robot attracted considerable interest at the Arts Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria.

Education / Senate Moves To Scrap UTME by JoelNkantaBlog: 8:34pm On Oct 03, 2017
New Telegraph reports that the Senate has begun moves to scrap the post Unified Matriculation Examination, UME as it yesterday mandated its committee on Tertiary Education to meet with relevant stakeholders, especially the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and come up with recommendations on how to achieve the set goal.

According to the Senate, the move has become imperative because the introduction of the post – UME examination has to a large extent failed to remedy the problems associated with the JAMB, adding that its continued existence has posed more challenges for the Nigeria educational system.

The Senate has also called for the development of a strategy that would ensure the efficiency and integrity in the conduct of JAMB examination. The resolutions of the Senate Tuesday followed a motion by Senator Umaru l. Kurfi, APC, Katsina Central and entitled, “The Need to revisit the regulatory conflict between Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Universities in offering admission in Nigeria.”

In his presentation of the motion, Senator Umaru l. Kurfi said that “The Senate: Notes that the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) was established in 1976 and saddled with the responsibility of streamlining and co- ordinating admission practice as well as determining who is admitted into universities and other tertiary educational institutions in Nigeria; “Further notes that that the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) is the Federal umbrella organization which oversees the administration of University education in Nigaria, and prior to 2005 , the truly criteria needed for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions was for such candidate to have minimum admission requirement and possess a certain score at his or her JAMB examination.

“Aware that the laudable objectives of JAMB began to suffer progressive denudation shortly after its inception as some universities admitted students outside the list sent by JAMB and rejecting candidates with admission letters from JAMB on the ground that they had to comply with their own internal quota and catchment calculation, coupled with the issue of malpractices that plagued JAMB examinations.

“Further aware as scores of successful JAMB candidates turned out ill equipped for university education, the Federal Government, in 2005, under the leadership of President Olusegun Obasanjo , introduced the policy of Post-UME screening by Universities which made it compulsory for tertiary institutions to screen candidates after JAMB results and before offering admission;

Crime / I Got N7, 000 For Participating In Killing Of GUS Winner - Suspect by JoelNkantaBlog: 7:54pm On Oct 03, 2017
Punch reports that one of the suspects arrested for the murder of a former winner of Guilder Ultimate Search, Hector Jobarteh, has owned up to his involvement in the crime.

The suspect, 49-year-old Ismaila Adeyemi, said he got a mobile phone from the valuables carted away from the victim’s residence.

He said his brother, Usman Adeyemi, who had also been arrested, helped him to sell the phone for N7,000, adding that he gave Usman N2,000 from the sum.

PUNCH Metro had reported that some assailants had, on September 3, 2017, trailed 38-year-old Jobarteh to his house on Olufowora Close, New Oko-Oba, Agege, from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, and shot him dead.

It was said the deceased had gone to pick his younger brother, who arrived from abroad, at the airport.

Apart from Ismaila and Usman, four other suspects, including an Uber driver, who took the gang to the victim’s house, and the buyers of the phone, had been apprehended.

Ismaila, who was paraded on Monday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja, told our correspondent that one Nonso, KK and him stormed the house that Jobarteh’s lived on a robbery mission that day.

The father of two children explained that a lady, who is still at large, led them to the residence, adding that the deceased’s father was shot in the attack.

He said, “I knew KK through Nonso, whom I worked with in a filling station in Apapa some years back. I met Nonso about five months ago and I gave him the address of where I live in Sango, Ogun State. KK just came back from abroad that time.

“I did not know who the man was before the operation. On that day, we parked at a filling station around his house and a lady came to meet KK. After a while, he received a call from the lady and we saw the man (Jobarteh) drove into the close.

“We followed him, but did not know where he entered. KK approached a woman and lied to her that the man’s car hit his and he sped off. He begged her to direct us to where the man entered and she did. When we got into the building, we saw the car and met another lady on the premises.

“KK asked the lady to lead us to the man’s apartment, but she declined. It was when he pointed a gun at the woman that she complied and took KK upstairs. He called us to come upstairs, but by the time we got to a living room upstairs, he had shot the man’s father in the hand.”

The native of Osogbo, Osun State said the gunshot prompted Jobarteh to come out from a room to the living room, where KK immediately gunned him down.

“I did not shoot at all, although I was holding a gun too. I quarrelled with KK for shooting them, because our plan was just to rob. He threatened to shoot me and I kept quiet. It was a pair of shoes and flowers that were in the bag we collected from him. We didn’t find money there.

“I took away only his white handset while KK went with the bag. I gave the phone to my brother, Usman, to help me sell it. He said he sold it for N7,000. I collected N5,000 and gave him N2,000,” he added.

However, the state Commissioner of Police, Edgar Imohimi, who paraded Adeyemi, said he shot the GUS winner.

He added that the command would not stop until other suspects involved in the murder were arrested.

Imohimi said, “I am glad to announce to you that after weeks of extensive manhunt, the principal suspect, Ismail Adeyemi, who pulled the trigger that killed the victim, has been arrested and he confessed to the crime.

Politics / Nigeria Will Be Worse Off If Buhari Gets 2nd Term - Okogie by JoelNkantaBlog: 5:26pm On Sep 30, 2017
President not doing enough –Obasanjo

The Archbishop Emeritus of Lagos Archdiocese and former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, yesterday argued that Nigeria would be worse off should President Muhammadu Buhari gets a second time in office.

New Telegraph reports that the cardinal in a telephone interview with Saturday Telegraph, stated that Buhari’s performance so far had been below the average mark, which does not support the calls for his second term. This is coming on the heels of another bombshell from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in which he carpeted the president as not doing enough to expand agriculture business and youth employment in Nigeria. Obasanjo who was quoted by a Liberian Magazine, AfricanArguments, explained that, “Buhari has made some announcements.

He had tried to keep on going in the area of agribusiness, but not enough. “It is not yet enough to prepare the ground for uninhibited growth of the economy, which we need. Is Buhari doing enough about it? I don’t believe he is.

Can he do enough about it? Of course he can”, the ex-president said. Obasanjo also maintained: “All youths in Nigeria have legitimate reasons to feel frustrated and angry,” noting that some of those protesting “don’t even know what the struggle is all about, but if it gives them false hope, why not hang onto it?” Okogie, who added that the president’s first term report card would be a stumbling block for his quest for re-election, said those calling him out for another shot at the presidency do not mean well for Buhari and the nation. They are simply enemies of Nigeria, he insisted. He said: “As far as Cardinal Anthony Okogie is concerned, his first term is bad; I think it’s below the average mark.

So, this will not give him a better chance to stand for a second term. From what is on ground, I don’t think he will get anywhere. “The main thing that Nigerians want now is to see the dividends of democracy in action.

They are telling us that we have pulled out of the recession. Go to the market, there’s nothing like that. There’s no sign of improvement. What is sold for N10 still sells for N10 or even at N12. Is that what you call improvement of the economy?

“They promised to do everything but on getting into saddle, they keep procrastinating. Look at the state of the nation today. It’s as if there is no government.” Okogie also lampooned the legislature, saying they are moving the country backwards.

“Look at the parliament, what are they doing in the House of Representatives? What are they doing in the Senate? What are the socalled big men doing? It’s very painful. We are going from bad to worse. Very soon, we’ll get to worst if there’s no change before December.

“Everybody is taking the laws into their hands the way they like. Would you call this a nation? You can’t walk freely on the street. You are not sure of having a meal per day. You are not sure of seeing tomorrow.

“People are not asleep. People are opening their eyes every day to see what these people are doing. And that is why they are struggling to have their man at the top. There are many other people lined up. And we’re talking about Buhari and Atiku.

Can they even win the primaries? These noisemakers are just making people to know that they are alive,” he said. Also speaking, Bishop Steven Ogedengbe, presiding bishop of Evangelical Ministries (a.k.a Wisdom Chapel), Akowonjo, Egbeda, Lagos, said that those who love the president should preoccupy themselves with prayers for God to help him finish the first term. Second term, according to him, has not even come into the equation because God is the owner of time and purpose.

“Anybody talking about second term is deceiving Buhari. He had not been able to travel to any part of our country to inspect projects. He had never been to Ibadan, for instance, for almost two years now. He doesn’t know what is going on in Benin. He doesn’t know what is going on in Akure.

He didn’t even go to Kaduna for the graduation of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) recently. “He didn’t sign our budget this year. So, second term is not realistic for now. We should all forget about that.

God should let him continue this term and he should be faithful enough like Nelson Mandela to honourably step aside after that, and also join hands with an eligible person who can take over from him and perform.

“We are not too bad. We are over 180 million people. So, for me, I think the man should relax if God helps him to finish the first term. Second term, no! He should work hard for anybody who is coming to take over from him. God bless Nigeria”, the cleric said.

But these are not the first set of people to query the rationale behind the calls. The Saturday Telegraph had recently sampled opinions, in which some respondents had called to question, the basis for the second term calls.

Earlier in the month, an elder statesman and leader of the Northern Elders Council (NEC), Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, said: I don’t advise anybody to contest in election, it is a personal decision and someone has to make up his mind to contest or not.

So, I won’t advise President Buhari to recontest or not. I don’t want to waste my time talking about 2019 elections when we still have two years to come. Let us talk more about things that would be beneficial to Nigerians. I don’t believe in speculations.

In the same vein, a chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Ralph Obioha, said it is a free society and anybody could start campaigning anytime, insisting that people could start campaigning whenever they want. According to him, the campaign for 2019 elections is not too early and Buhari has the right to seek for re-election in 2019. “It is his choice to decide and not for anybody to decide for him. He is the one who will make the calls.

It is his decision to determine whether to recontest in 2019 or not. On his part, a former governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, said there is nothing wrong starting 2019 campaign now as long as political parties exist.

“Campaign is a continuous thing and I don’t know why anybody should not be allowed to campaign. As long as we have political parties that are aspiring to contest in any election, campaign can start. Political parties are meant to campaign for support.

It is a continuous thing. On whether President Buhari should re-contest in 2019 or not, Obioha said that is his own decision. “As far as I am concerned, it is left for him to decide whether to contest or not.

Only Buhari can (Click on the link below to read more)

Education / Vcs, ASUU Reject 120 Cut-off Mark For Varsity Admission by JoelNkantaBlog: 1:51pm On Aug 25, 2017
SOME Vice-Chancellors and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have rejected the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to peg admission cut-off mark at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education.

ASUU said the action, which it described as a “sad policy decision,” was in tandem “with the dream of the present government to destroy public universities in the country.”

According to Punch, most of the vice-chancellors maintained that they would not lower admission standards in their respective varsities.

The vice-chancellors stated that the decision would add no value to the nation’s university system.

For instance, in a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, on the issue and released by his Media Assistant, Mr. Sunday Saanu, on Thursday, the premier university stated that it would never admit any candidate that scored 120 in the UTME.

The statement added, “It should worry us as patriots that candidates who scored just 30 per cent in the UTME can be admitted into some of our universities. Yet, we complain of poor quality of our graduates. You can hardly build something on nothing. The consolation here is that since JAMB started conducting this qualifying exam in 1978, UI has never admitted any candidate who scored less than 200 marks out of the maximum 400 marks.

“This translates to a minimum of 50 per cent. This remains our position as an institution aspiring to be world-class. Reality is that only about four other universities in the country have such high standard. To that extent, apart from being the oldest, we are an elite university in the country at least judging by the quality of our intakes.’’

Olayinka, however, commended the decision of the Federal Government to re-introduce the post-UTME test and exonerated the incumbent JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, from the cancellation of the test two sessions ago.

“It is gratifying to note that the Honourable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who chaired the meeting, apologised publicly for canceling the post-UTME screening last year.

“In effect, universities are now allowed to conduct the test using modalities approved by the Senate of each institution.

“To be fair to the incumbent Registrar of JAMB, he was not the Registrar when the policy somersault of cancelling the post-UTME test was made last year. As strongly canvassed by us at every opportunity, for UI, the need to admit the best admission seekers is the primary motivation for the test and not money, even though we do not pretend that you can run any university so properly called without funds.”

Speaking to one of our correspondents on Thursday, the Vice-Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ogun State, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, said that the onus would ultimately fall on parents and employers of labour to decide “between a first-class graduate of a university which takes 120 as its cut-off mark or one that takes 180 as its cut-off mark.’’

Obilade, who said that TASUED would never go below 180, insisted that many of the VCs at the Combined Policy Meeting during which the 120 benchmark decision was made, said they would not go below 180.

She said, “But some universities chose 120 at the meeting. What the JAMB has done is to transfer power back to the Senate of universities to decide their cut-off marks. What I can tell you is that many public universities and even private universities will not go below 200. We were told that some universities were doing what they called ‘under the table admission’ and then come back to JAMB after four years for regularisation.

Politics / Arewa Youths Make U-turn, Say Ibos Can Stay In North by JoelNkantaBlog: 1:16pm On Aug 25, 2017
The Coalition of Northern Groups has withdrawn the quit notice given to the Igbo living in the North to leave before October 1.

The withdrawal of the quit notice was announced in Abuja on Thursday evening by the leaders of the group at a press conference.

Before the announcement was made, members of the group had met with the Governor of Borno State, who is also the Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum, Mallam Ibrahim Shettima and a former governor of Kano State, Alhaji Kabiru Gaya.

Also in attendance at the meeting were ex-minister Sani Daura and the Leader of Arewa Youths Council, Alhaji Shettima Yerima and a Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo.

The group said it decided to withdraw the threat as a result of what it described as intense persuasive pressure from concerned political, traditional and religious leaders in the country.

A member of the Northern Emancipation Network, Alhaji Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, read the text of the press conference.

He said, “Most significance was our correspondence with the then Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and most recently our interface with the Presidency through the Special Assistant to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu.

“As a consequence of these vigorous engagements and as a cultured people with a tradition of respect for our nation’s values, leaders and elders, we are today pleased to announce the immediate suspension of the relocation clause otherwise referred to as the quit notice from the Kaduna Declaration.”

Suleiman said that the group was not afraid of sticking with the notice, but said that the suspension was as a result of the respect the group had for a “united, peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.”

The text was signed by leaders of the 14 groups, including Yerima, the leader of Youth Consultative Forum who read the Kaduna Declaration, where the quit notice was given.

Even with the withdrawal of the quit notice, Suleiman said that the group would still pursue its petition to the United Nations and the call on the Federal Government to mete appropriate sanction to the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

He equally called “for the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and for his appropriate prosecution while calling on the Senate to demand that all senators who stood surety for him in court should rescind their bond or be suspended accordingly.”

Crime / Drug War: Gunmen Invade Church, Kill 19 Worshipers by JoelNkantaBlog: 2:58pm On Aug 07, 2017
Tears flowed like a stream yesterday at Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State as five gunmen invaded St. Philip Catholic Church about 7:30a.m. and shot indiscriminately at the worshippers. When the gunmen left, 19 of those attending the early morning Mass, among them children, lay dead. Witnesses said that 15 people died instantly while four out of the 18 who were injured and were taken to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi died later. New Telegraph learnt that the shooting was as a result of a fracas between drug barons based in South Africa, who are indigenes of the town. At NAUTH, relatives of the victims thronged the hospital while some were weeping uncontrollably.

Doctors and nurses at the hospital were trying to save the lives of the injured ones. Sympathisers blocked the old Nnewi Onitsha Road as everybody was trying to get to the hospital to find out whether his or her relation was a victim. Efforts to see and speak with the victims were rebuffed by security officials at the hospital. An indigene of Ozubulu, Mr. Ike Ofomata, said the gunmen stormed the church while the mass was going on and started shooting and people started running and screaming. He said: “There was absolute chaos. At first, I was confused and I immediately lay flat on the floor.
Two seconds after I lay down, a young man who was beside me during the service was shot in the ear. He screamed and fell beside me and died on the spot.” Though police said that only eight people were killed, witnesses said that 19 people were killed. Among the dead was, Pa Akunwafor Ikegwuonwu, the father of a South Africa-based businessman, Aloysius, who built and donated the church to Nnewi Diocese.

Pa Ikegwuonwu’s wife was shot in her right arm and still on admission at the teaching hospital. One of the survivors, Mr. Stephen Ohamadike, said the gunmen entered the church as they were about to begin prayer of the faithful. He said: “Those of us who were to say the prayers of the faithful had just assembled at the altar and I had Number 2 which meant that I was to say the prayer for Nigeria.

Suddenly, I saw someone who was putting on a cap with others shooting indiscriminately inside the church. “There was pandemonium and in the midst of the confusion, I just lay down on the floor. The officiating priest and the Mass servers quickly left the altar and the Mass came to an abrupt end. “I counted 11 dead people and many were wounded.

I used the vehicle belonging to Pa Akunwafor Ikegwuonwu to take him and his wife and others to Evans Hospital where the doctors advised us to go to the teaching hospital. I used the car to convey many other people to the hospital before I came back to Amakwa.”

The parish priest of the church, Rev Father Jude Onwuaso, declined comment on the incident, saying that the Bishop had directed that only the Diocesan Director of Communications should speak on the matter. It was learnt that the businessman (the man at the centre of the crisis) had been in town for a while and only left a few hours before the invaders stormed the town. Other sources said that the gunmen, who invaded the church with the hope of getting the businessman there, stormed his home and killed his father before getting away.

Although worshipers said five men invaded the church, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar, said it was only a gunman. Umar said the attacker must be an indigene of the area. According to him, after shooting his targeted victims, the attacker still killed and wounded other worshippers.

He said: “We gathered that worshippers at 6a.m. Sunday Mass at St. Philip Catholic Church, Ozubulu were in the service when a gunman dressed in black attire covering his face with a fez cap entered the church and moved straight to a particular direction and opened fire.

“From our findings, it is very clear that the person who carried out the attack must be an indigene of the area.” Umar said though no arrest had been made but the police already learnt that the attack followed a quarrel between two natives of Ozubulu residing abroad. While describing the act as sacrilegious, the commissioner said it was wrong for the perpetrators to extend their quarrel to the church. According to him, such conduct shows the people behind it do not fear God. While promising that those behind the act would be brought to justice, Umar said the police had launched a manhunt to fish out the culprits.

The Catchist of St Philips Parish, Mr. Calistus Ikeanumba, told journalists that (Click on the link below to read more)

Religion / No Woman Enticed Me To Leave Catholic Church - Rev. Patrick Edet by JoelNkantaBlog: 11:41am On Aug 05, 2017
The Catholic community and indeed the entire Akwa Ibom State and beyond were shocked beyond words, when one of the finest and best known priests in the state, Rev. Fr. Patrick Edet, renounced his stewardship as a priest of the Catholic church. He remains a priest however, albeit, not in the definition professed by the Catholic church. Dropping the bombshell, Edet said, he should be addressed as, Reverend Patrick Edet. He added that, he could also be addressed as Father. He said:”From today henceforth, I cease to be a Catholic Priest, in my spirit and in my soul…

I forgive those who will criticise me, I live for God…I seek freedom for my soul. As I leave, I leave smiling, I am so happy to be free.” As the dust of anxiety, worry, and fear over his future loom large, he stated he had achieved inner peace after making the move as he was somewhat bound by certain laws in the church to the detriment of his ministry. On a lighter note, he stated people were still free to address him as ‘Rev Fr.’ though the title was no longer valid. He said he resigned because he does not want to submit to any human authority but to God’s.

According to New Telegraph, prior to his resignation, speculations have become rife in Catholic circles. The resignation was long overdue, people saw it coming. Rev Patrick Edet wanted to leave when Bishop Joseph Ekuwem was the Bishop of Uyo Diocese. When Bishop John Ayah came to Uyo Diocese, he gave him (Fr. Edet) so much hope.

The Bishop also gave him the Pastoral Centre for his Grace Family Ministry. Many people were shocked when he gave him Pastoral Centre for his Ministry. The cabals which consist of mainly old priests have been agitating against Rev Edet since Bishop Ekuwem’s time.

It was because of that agitation that Bishop Ekuwem sent him (Fr. Edet) to Police Chaplaincy, Abuja, from 2011 to 2012. On returning since the chaplaincy did not work for him, Bishop Ekuwem kept him until the new Bishop came and gave him so much hope. The former Reverend Father who announced on his programme “Grace and Inspiration” on Planet Radio on Wednesday that he had resigned as a Catholic Priest said he lived in perpetual fear, pain, self-rejection and depression because of several factors which he explained thus.

He said: “26 years ago, at the age of 22, I had a personal experience of God for the first time. An experience of forgiveness, of personal experience of salvation and knowledge that there is God beyond just an idea and made covenant with God that since He had saved me, used me to save others.

And that I will do everything I can to be a blessing to others. That is the foundation of my seeking to be ordained a Catholic priest, just for one thing. What motivated me was never the love of robe, of being different from others, what motivated me was not to be better than others in status or title, what motivated me was not honour.

“It was greatest passion and what got me incensed and forced me to resign from the little job I had and forfeit the admission I had in the university, a process that would lead me to the ordination as a catholic priest. There was just one motive, to tell others about grace, that God saves, that God can heal, that God can change lives.

I have heard people talk about my weakness, I have heard people talk about my rubbish, my humble beginnings, my poverty, my struggle, my struggling with sin, struggling with issues. I have shared my story to tell someone else that in your story and in the middle of your story there is a grace that speaks and that God is a God of grace.

“More than 11 years ago I started preaching on radio and television. I had a vision of preaching on radio and television in the seminary. I wrote it down, I knew my whole life I will live it in the media, I will reach out to people. But I had thought I would first of all go abroad, get Ph.D, learn a lot and be grounded before I would be qualified to teach and preach on radio.

I was barely two years as a priest when God gave me the opportunity to start a ministry on radio. “And it has brought me incredible blessing. It has changed my life, brought me to studying the bible, and to seek to know God, to understand how God works with us. And to understand the call, what it means to be called by God and to walk with God.

It has also brought me a lot of challenges, a lot of opposition. In 2006, around June/ July, we started Night of Grace in collaboration with the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of Nigeria in Uyo Diocese. “My whole calling to the priesthood was inspired by those moments, of standing before people to demonstrate the mercy and the grace of God, to bring people’s heart to God and to cause people to hope in God and to let them know that God can do what man cannot do. “It also brought me a lot of fame, a lot of opposition, antagonism, blackmail.

All I hear every time is that I am not truly a Catholic priest, I am not good enough as a Catholic priest. It has been in conflict in my heart because the reason I accepted not to marry and to have children was not just to be a Catholic priest but to do the things that I do. To be naughty on radio and shout and laugh and inspire somebody.

Cry when I want to cry, console somebody who cries, to live my life out in my faith and in the process be a human being who can make mistakes. “The very things that I believe brought me to priesthood have been the reason that peace has been taken away from me for years.

I lived in fear, in doubt, sometimes I doubt myself and say am I really right, am I really in the right place. I hear people say he is too arrogant, he is trying to say he is different, he is pretending, he is looking for money, he is looking for fame. I have heard all sorts of things. And it has brought me a lot of pains in the process, sometimes self-rejection, sometimes doubt, sometimes depression, sometimes I don’t know but peace has been taken from me.” Reverend Edet said.

Resigned priest may soon get married

But a family source who craved anonymity said: “Having gone through his resignation, it was a reflection of the discussion I had with the then Rev (Fr) Patrick Edet on one of his visits to my office recently. I can remember the two pertinent questions I asked him. First was, if he will leave the Catholic church and second, if he was contemplating marriage.

These questions came as a result of the discussion we had where I personally noted the spiritual gifts God has blessed him with which may place him at variance with his Catholic doctrines. “I am not surprised that Patrick Edet has taken this decision.

If anything, he should be applauded for his gut and honesty. Yes, people are picking on him when he said he is free…. So what? If anyone has understanding of the things of spirit, you will understand him. When the spirit of God tells you to do one thing and you are prevented from doing that thing, either because of doctrine that governs where you are operating from or the punishment that follows when you go against the rule (s); brethren, that is enough captivity.

For me, I think Patrick Edet should be celebrated for still staying in the faith, believing in God and His son, Jesus Christ. He is just changing a denomination but still serving God. It hurts as well as sad to see and hear those he shared communion with a few days ago, shouting crucify him, calling him names just for changing a denomination whereas, shortly before today, they were hailing him, proud to have him as a Catholic Priest among them “Reverend Father Patrick Edet’s resignation as Catholic Priest does not come as a surprise to me. I expected this long ago. I’m sure he will soon announce his marriage. I wish him good luck in his future endeavours.”

According to Punch, Abayomi, who lives in the Magodo area of the state was said to be working with the group. He was arrested along with two others, whose names had yet to be disclosed.

The assailants had killed four members of a family – Rotimi Adejare, his wife, Rita, and two kids – in the early hours of Sunday. The third kid was admitted to the Ikorodu General Hospital in a critical condition.

The suspects had cut the window net of the family’s apartment to gain entry, smashing a stone on the victims’ heads afterwards.

It was reported that the incident became known around 12pm when their church members checked on them to know why they didn’t attend a special church programme held that day.

Our correspondent learnt on Monday that the only survivor had been referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba.

One of the pro-Biafran groups, the Biafra Zionist Federation, on Monday, in Enugu, declared the secession of the ‘Republic of Biafra’ from Nigeria.

Biafra takes off as an independent country on Tuesday (today), August 1, 2017, according to BZM leader, Mr. Benjamin Onwuka, who declared himself the ‘Interim President’ of the new nation at a press briefing at the Enugu secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists.

He did not name a Vice-President.

Onwuka, who was detained, and charged with treason after leading some members of the BZF to invade the studios of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service in a failed bid to announce the secession of Biafra on June 5, 2014, also named ministers and other top government officials of Biafra.

The officials named by Onwuka are prominent personalities drawn from different areas, which the BZF leader said were Biafran territories.

Eminent economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, was named the foreign minister while a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has been appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Biafra.

In the same vein, a former boss of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh, has been named the finance minister.

Crime / Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan's Home Burgled by JoelNkantaBlog: 6:54pm On Jul 31, 2017
An Abuja home of former President Goodluck Jonathan has been burgled, PREMIUM TIMES can confirm.

However, in what appears a curious twist, the house was not burgled by known thieves, but by police officers assigned to guard the house.

The Nigeria Police have thus arrested three of its officers for stealing items valued at several millions of naira from the Abuja residence of the former president.

The items were alleged to have been stolen by the officers from the residence located at No. 89, Fourth Avenue in the Gwarimpa district of Abuja.

They include sets of furniture, dozens of plasma television sets, refrigerators, air-conditioner units and box-loads of clothes such as designer suits imprinted with the former president’s name, male and female Ijaw traditional attires, lace materials and bowler hats.

PREMIUM TIMES exclusively gathered that the three mobile police officers conducted a systematic looting over a period of three months beginning from around March 2016, until they totally stripped the house of all movable items, which they sold piecemeal to dealers at the Panteka second-hand materials market in Tipper Garage, Gwarimpa.

Mr. Jonathan’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, confirmed the theft to PREMIUM TIMES. He also confirmed that the affected officers have been arrested.

According to a security source involved in the investigation, by the time family members of the former president were made aware of the looting early this month, the house had been stripped bare.

On getting wind of the arrest of the policemen, two dealers who had been the main recipients of the stolen items were said to have closed down their shops at Panteka market and have since remained at large.

Mr. Jonathan had lived in the house for about a year when he was vice president. His mother was said to have assumed residence there after Mr. Jonathan moved to the Aso Rock Villa upon becoming Acting President in 2010.

PREMIUM TIMES could not ascertain when and the reason Mr. Jonathan’s mother vacated the residence, leaving it under security guard of the police.

THE LOOTING

Our investigations revealed that the looting was discovered when a neighbour noticed “severe damage to the house” and called a member of Mr. Jonathan’s family to ask whether the house was undergoing renovation.

The former president was said to have personally gone to inspect the property after which he reported the vandalization to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

After a team of officers dispatched to the scene confirmed the crime, Mr. Idris was said to have ordered the arrest of the three police officers who were still on guard duty at the residence.

“They were arrested about two weeks ago,” the police source familiar with the development told this newspaper last Tuesday.

A trader at the Panteka market, who confessed to being close to one of the fleeing buyers of the stolen items, was interviewed by PREMIUM TIMES undercover reporter.

According to the trader who declined to be named, the police officers first brought some items to the market for sale in early 2016.

“It all started sometimes around March 2016 when a mobile police sergeant came to Tipper Garage market and brought some items for sale. He approached one of the wholesalers to buy them, but the trader said he does not buy items from an unconfirmed owner,” he said.

“He identified himself as Sergeant Musa and told the trader that he was one of the security men guarding Mr. Jonathan’s private residence at Gwarimpa. He took the trader to follow him to confirm that he was not a thief who had come to sell off stolen properties in the market.

“The trader followed him to the residence where he met two other policemen, an inspector and a sergeant. They convinced him that the items were part of gifts to them.”

The source told PREMIUM TIMES that it was not long before he noticed that the stream of transaction had no end, as the Sergeant Musa continued to invite the trader to the residence to pick up fresh items.

“At a point, the trader became scared when he suspected foul play and told Sergeant Musa that he was no longer interested in the transaction,” he said.

He said Mr. Musa however got another customer, a wholesaler in the market, who would eventually buy almost 80 per cent of all the properties removed from Mr. Jonathan’s residence.

Crime / Badoo Resurfaces, Kills Couple, Two Daughters by JoelNkantaBlog: 11:56am On Jul 31, 2017
Barely a month after the Lagos State Police Command formed a joint taskforce in Ikorodu in order to check the escalating ritual killings orchestrated by the dreaded Badoo group, the members, yesterday, resurfaced, killing a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Adejare and their two daughters.
The killing occurred at Oke Ota, Ibeshe Ikorodu. The ugly incident happened over the night on July 29. The corpses were discovered yesterday, July 30, 2017
According to a resident in the area where the family was murdered, the incident was not discovered until yesterday afternoon.

Although it was a family of five, only one child survived and she is presently battling to stay alive at the Ikorodu General Hospital. The children are between ages five and one. Two of them were identified as Siyin and Ajoke.
The resident, simply identified as Israel, said: “The signature of the murder of the family is the hallmark of the Badoo killing group. They killed the father of the house, his wife and daughters. Nobody knew what had happened until some church members went to their house, to find out why they didn’t come to church. When the door was forced open, there was blood everywhere.”

The killers were alleged to have cut the window net of the family’s apartment in order to gain entry. The victims’ heads were alleged to have been smashed with a stone and the stone left behind.
Another resident said: “The family is members of The Chosen Generation Family Church in Oke Ota. They had a programme in their church on Sunday. The members decided to check on them because they did not come to the church. They found the whole family lying in a pool of blood and raised the alarm. One of the three children was still breathing. He was rushed to a hospital. There are burglar-proof bars on the windows in the house, except at the kitchen section. Unfortunately, that was where they exploited. They tore the net and entered their rooms.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olarinde Famous-Cole said that the incident was reported in the early hours of yesterday, after police operatives responded to a distress call.
He said: “Our men mobilized to the scene, where the operatives found it extremely difficult to locate the house; it was situated in a thick forest where it impossible for anybody to identify a dwelling house. Our men went on foot and got to the house. It was just a room and parlour; with one open window and no visible form of security. It was there that a family of five was attacked. Three died on the spot, one died while receiving treatment at the hospital and the last member is alive and responding to treatment.”

Nigerians have been urged to go for periodic screening, especially for colon cancer, which is said to be a huge burden on the country, as it is common among people above 40.
The President, Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria President, Prof Musa Borodo, gave this warning at a press briefing commemorating the 10th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the association in Ado Ekiti.
The goal of the conference is to explore better ways of treating diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, leveraging on technology.
Borodo warned that diseases such as colorectal cancer, liver cancer, helicobacter pyloris and other infections that occur in the gastrointestinal tract, are usually not easy to detect when looking out for signs and symptoms. And when the symptoms are obvious they are often too late to treat.
According to him, about 10 percent of people in Nigeria are suffering from Hepatitis B – a viral infection – which he warned could lead to cancer, if not properly treated.
“This (Hepatitis B) is something that can be prevented, if you don’t treat it, it could become cancer. So, it is a huge problem.”
Speaking on the theme, “Gastrointestinal Malignancies in Africa: Past, Present and Future,” Borodo said it was chosen to create awareness on early detection of cancer, prevention and cure.
“The forum is to increase knowledge, expertise and foremost research of interests in diseases affecting alimentary canal.”
Borodo lamented that two cases of cancer at end stage are reported daily in the treatment centre.
He advised people to take natural foods, avoid refined sugar, eat well, exercise regularly, drink clean water, visit hospitals for routine check up and stay away from smoking to avoid cancer.
Stating some of the cause of cancer, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee for the conference, Dr. Deji Ajayi, cautioned against taking burnt boli (plantain), burnt suya and refined drinks as they could cause cancer.
The Consultant General Surgeon, Lagos State University, Teaching Hospital, Dr. Mobolaji Oludara, lamented the dearth of equipment, training and materials in handling liver transplant in Nigeria.
He, however, added that it was a matter of time that liver transplant would become a regular feature.

Education / Abdalla Adamu, NOUN VC, Becomes Isoko Chief by JoelNkantaBlog: 10:29am On Jul 12, 2017
The vice-chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, in the weekend became the newest chief in the Emevor Traditional Council, Delta State, following his conferment with a traditional chieftaincy title and installation as the Oruakpor of Emevor Kingdom by the Odion of Emevor, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Francis Onovughakpor Ekama.

The Odion, while performing the installation rites on the vice-chancellor, who holds a double professorial chair in Science Education and Cultural Communication, explained that hard work must be rewarded. He cited the outstanding contribution which Adamu has made towards the social and educational development of Emevor Kingdom, the Isoko nation, Delta State and the whole of Nigeria as the yardstick for his selection for the honour.

A visibly elated Adamu thanked the Odion, his council of elders, and the entire Emevor Kingdom for the confidence reposed in him to be so honoured, and on a lighter mood said he would soon secure a parcel of land to build his house in Emevor to enable him discharge his chieftaincy duties apprioprately.

The event of Saturday soon moved from the palace of the king to the permanent site the Emevor Study Centre of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where the Fundraising/Foundation Laying Ceremony organized by the Emevor Study Centre Implementation Committee took place.

The ceremony which attracted the Who-Is-Who in Emevor and the Isoko ethnic nationality, was also graced by the Delta State governor, His Excellency Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who was represented by the Acting Governor Deacon Barr. Kingsley Otuaro.

The governor thanked the vice-chancellor and management of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) for siting a study centre of the institution in Emevor and pledged the commitment of his administration to ensure that the study centre attains an enviable standard.

Professor Adamu, in his speech as the Chief Guest of Honour, explained that Delta State is very special to the NOUN, especially because, “Delta state boasts of the highest number of students in the university nationwide.”

He also seized the opportunity to inform the cheering crowd that the National Assembly has passed the amended Act of Parliament establishing the university in which clauses precluding graduates of the university from participating in the Nigerian Law School and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have been removed.

The foundation of the administrative block at the permanent site of the study centre was jointly laid by the representative of the governor and the vice-chancellor.

In a related development, Adamu also inaugurated the administrative block and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre of the Owohrede Community Study Centre of NOUN also in Delta State.

He called on the people of Owohrede “to (Click on the link below to read more)

Crime / Re: NOUN Student Declared Wanted For Stealing Aunt’s N4.8m Jewelry/120k by JoelNkantaBlog: 2:09pm On Jun 18, 2017
The blogger has no reason whatsoever to bring NOUN into this. If the institution takes legal action against the publication can they stand it? This is the problem we have when carpenters litigate as lawyers and shoe menders turn journalists
