Igbos were not "settled" .No one owed them anything so your starting point is wrong.

Has anyone settledthe victims of Boko Haram?

Are Igbos better than they?

They are victims while Igbos were investors in Biafra
I know Nigeria is a bitter, cold, inhumane place where life means little but YES Igbos deserved compensation. The ECOWAS court has today vindicated this fact.

Settled is even a nice statement. They were robbed. If I come to your house, burn all your property and take N1m from you. Turn around and give you 2k is that robbery or charity?

Wrong analogy. Boko Haram's origins are from Islamic extremism. A totally unprovoked home grown religious uprising that has murdered tens of thousands...Yet they have a whole frigging commission designated to funnel billions every year to them. Boko haram killers and child rapists are now on an allowance...Let that permeate

A great man. The first Igbo man to lead the entire Igbo nation. Like any man he had his faults but his courage and leadership overshadow them greatly. He was there for us and showed strength when it seemed our enemies were about to annihilate us. If there had been more like him in the south and middle belt we would not be where are today.

With 20 pounds in 1970 you could buy a little over an ounce(1.2) of gold
Which today is £1000 an ounce
The average price of a barrel of oil in 1970 was $3.39 in 1970. Not certain of the exchange rate as per dollar to Pound but let's just estimate....Igbos were settled after the war with 6-7 barrels of crude oil....

If you are interested in knowing the value of £20 in 1970 here is some homework

Check the exchange rate to USD$ 2.3-2.5 = $46 -50

We know that the Nigerian pound exchange at parity(1:1) with sterling

Check the pricee of gold per ounce in 1970about $39

Check the price of gold tooday $1280
Pally leave all this galala wey you dance...Show me any authoritative statement that indicates the value of 1 Nigerian Pound in 1970.

In 1970 the common man's car was the Mini cooper. It cost about £600 then while a week's wages were about £32.

Touting Awo's 20 Pounds as an achievement is very unfortunate

In 1970 after the war the Nigerian government generally gave £20 of Nigerian money to every eligible adult but no one has ever done the math.

Let us assume their were one million of them =£20million Nigerian

We know that the Nigerian pound exchanged for £2 pounds sterling in 1970 so
that would be £40 million . What would that be worth today

according to this inflation calculator

https://www.moneysorter.co.uk/calculator_inflation2.html
it would be
£432612859. Sterling
Not sure what sterling is doing these days but @ 475

that is

205491108025 Naira

200 billion

Assuming it was 1 million people that received the money. No one has ever told us how many did but I think it could be double that.

For a country to pay that out immediately after a war of such devastation is a huge feat considering that Nigeria was not even a major oil exporter in1970 and in 1970 oil prices were under $4 which when adjusted for inflation in today's money is $21.

It is a testament to the prudent financial management of Papa Awo who also kept the allocation of East Central state for 3 years and paid it all after the war

But they are not grateful and feel entitled to that payment. What have we done for the NE . Imagine finding 200 billion to give them today when oil prices in real terms are 3 X what they were in 1970

The standard of living was much lower. Let me put it in Perspective our standard of living then, There was no Lagos Ibadan Expressway. No East -West Road. PH to Aba was a single carriage way.The Air assault camp was the main airport in PH Omagwa airport did not exist. There was nothing like presidential jet. Where were the airports?
The country was broke with very little compared to today but still gave generously in the spirit or sacrifice and reconciliation
What a petty, poorly researched, illogical post grin

These ppl don't care how ridiculous they sound in their attempts to re-write igbo history.

A loaf of bread was 53 pence in 1970 so it means the Igbos were compensated with equivalent of 40 loaves of bread grin Such a wonderful generous gesture by Awo. grin

The topic was deleted for no reason, but I will recreate the clean version.

Today, Ibadan, Lagos, Ogun and even Osun all have masterplans to develop their land. Why don't Ibos have the same plan? Why do they rely on FG to come up with a plan to develop the SE?
Which region in Nigeria has leaders who "develop" their place? South West and Northern leaders are the most guilty of under developing their regions.

What develops a region is private sector efforts backed up by Federal and State government infrastructure such as power, good roads, railways etc. The federal government has been giving and still giving roads, railways, dams, irrigation etc to the north and south west yet those two regions are still largely backward and underdeveloped.

In a place like Anambra the state infrastructure is generally good and the private sector is vibrant. There is almost no existing federal infrastructure there...Is there any place in the south west as vibrant economically as Anambra? No call Lagos o!!

No long tin. Your attempt to spin a soul searching article by an Igbo son is dead on arrival. It has no bearing on development, the article is referring to vices among igbo political leaders who as events and current news has shown are not half as corrupt as their south west or northern counterparts.

Anambra with 20.6 billion is the least indebted state in this country and has a better local road network than all south west states except maybe lagos.

Upon all south west debt the academic standards in that region have been on the decline if waec/neco results are anything to go by. SE investments in education are yielding fruits if the same waec/neco results are anything to go by...

Does our former capital lagos have pipeborne water to even 10% of its residents after 16 years of democracy??

(3) Chris Ngige (APC) =95, 963 votes

Nnamdi Kanu is not the reason restructuring is being discussed.
It is due to the political calculations of 2019.
Restructuring discussion is not new to Nigeria and since the "change"
mantra has now expired, it is important that a new slogan is created,
hence the birth of lip-service restructuring.

Remember that a candidate does not need the support of Kanu and his
followers to win the presidential election and I doubt Kanu will be thrilled
to abandon his god-like aura to support a candidate who promises restructuring.
I maintain that if not for Nnamdi Kanu there would be no clamour on the scale of secessionist groups and mass rallies, there would have been no Arewa Youth quit notice.

Restructuring has been a strong topic since 1999 and APC also promised it before 2015 elections but abandoned it. Do you remember when Osibanjo more than a year ago said no to restructuring? How come they suddenly are interested in it now? Because it has become a necessity and an option to Kanu's call for secession
PoliticsRe: OPINION: Why Buhari Is Right In Asking The World Bank To Focus On The North by joeyfire(m): 7:53am On Oct 13, 2017
The north has consumed up to 60% of oil money since independence. The north has been enjoying the best federal infrastructure in the country thanks to northerners that have ruled more than other ethnic group. Northerners own all the oil blocs etc etc etc

1. Yet the north has the worst academic results in the country

2. Highest poverty rates

3. Severe terrorism/Ignorance and violence

4. Millions of Almajiris/urchins

etc etc etc

If you like put all the resources in the world into the north you cannot see progress until the lazy, corrupt, wicked northern elite are called to account by the poor suffering masses of the north. Unfortunately the northern masses are too illiterate, poor and brainwashed to do a thing

This is the first time I don't agree with Shaka Momodu 100%

I agree just 30%. Nnamdi Kanu used divisive language, tacitly encouraged people worshipping him and did not do enough thinking through with his tactics and strategy when he had the benefit of his peak in popularity.

However Nnamdi Kanu is THE REASON why restructuring is being discussed today and for that he deserves credit more than any other person in Nigeria today. The Arewa conference going on now is a fallout of IPOB agitation let nobody deceive himself.

I was and am happy Kanu emerged because I knew that even if an independent Biafra was not feasible immediately, in the worst case scenario we would be granted a regional govt similar to pre-1966. That was when IPOB pressure was on. Now the north has no real pressure and they will define restructuring as it will benefit them. Shaka Momodu and his biro can do little about that.

The President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim , said on Thursday that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request. Kim and the Managing Director , International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde , who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, United States , also advised Buhari to invest in things that would enhance economic growth.

Kim said , “ You know, in my very first meeting with President Buhari he said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we ’ ve done that . Now, it has been very difficult. The work there has been very difficult. “ I think Nigeria , of course , has suffered from the dropping oil prices . I think things are just now getting better. But the conversation we need to have with Nigeria, I think , is in many ways related to the theme that I brought to the table just this past week, which is investment in human capital . The percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that Nigeria spends on healthcare is less than one percent. ”

He added , “ Despite that, there is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country , and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices . Nigeria has to think ahead and invest in its people. Investing in the things that will allow Nigeria to be a thriving rapidly growing economy in the future is what the country has to focus on right now . ”
