Last year, the company began paying bounties for certain bugs researchers might find in third-party services that integrate with Facebook. It will now expand the types of bugs that are eligible, and even pay out for bugs that have also been directly submitted to another developer’s own bug bounty. Essentially, Facebook is willing to reward bugs that impact its platform even if a researcher has already gotten another payout elsewhere for finding it. The company is also adding bonuses from $1,000 to $15,000 if researchers find bugs in the fundamental code of its native products—like Messenger, Oculus, Portal, or WhatsApp—and then also submit additional materials, like showing how the bugs could actually be exploited in the wild. Before now, there wasn’t a specifically codified bonus structure if you went above and beyond in a submission, a practice Facebook wants to encourage. “Reports submitted to us thanks to security researchers allow us to learn from their insights,” says Dan Gurfinkel, who heads Facebook’s bug bounty program. “And that allows us to catch more bugs in the future. Humans are always more creative than machines, so we want to see how they’re able to bypass our protections.” In Facebook’s notorious data breach last year, for example, hackers abused a chain of three bugs that allowed them to grab account authentication tokens through the “View As” feature. Around the same time, Facebook disclosed and patched a critical WhatsApp bug submitted through its bounty program that exploited a flaw in the WhatsApp media gallery flow. Facebook offers a minimum payout of $500 for accepted bugs, and no maximum—meaning that there’s no specific upper limit on how valuable a bug could potentially be. So far the largest payout from Facebook’s bounty is $50,000, while Apple will pay out up to $1 million for the most valuable iOS bugs. It’s worth it to Facebook to get on top of the unintended potential data exposures that come from third-party integrations. Facebook previously only allowed bug hunters to submit findings about third parties that came from analyzing publicly available information without actively hacking those services. But now, Facebook will accept bugs discovered through active penetration testing, so long as the approach complies with the guidelines set out by the third party itself. The idea of potentially double-paying for bugs is unusual, but may give Facebook more insight into the type of bugs third-parties have and whether they’ve been fixed. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has disclosed that the first choice admission for public universities which commenced from August 21st, will end on November 16. While that of private universities which commenced August 21st, 2019, will end February 15, 2020. In the same vein, the second choice admission for public universities will be from November 17 to December 17, 2019. This was disclosed by the JAMB’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. According to him, the decision on admission deadline which was taken during the policy meeting with stakeholders on June 11, at Gbongan, Osun, remains sacrosanct. He further stated that the Board’s major focus for 2019 admission was to ensure that candidates fill up more of the available admission spaces which was not the case in 2018 where over 500,000 available spaces were not utilized in all the tiers of tertiary institutions. Meanwhile, the JAMB CAPS portal for 2019 which will enable candidates to monitor their admission status has been enabled, Candidates are to check this link: 2019 JAMB CAPS Admission Exercise: How To Check Admission Status for details on how to access their admission status. Dr Fabian equally stated that the attention of the board had been drawn to reports in some quarters against the principles of transformation of scores by the board. According to him, in every selection examination, marks of candidates are obtained as raw scores and then processed into usable scores. This means that if, for instance, JAMB examines about two million candidates in 23 subjects, it is only natural that you normalise these scores so that the candidates can be rated on the same scale. “In the process of normalising these scores, candidates who have scored zero in a particular subject can also have a value of a mark which may not be up to 20. “In doing this, the psychometric formula globally used by all examination bodies gives even zero a value.” “If the raw score indicates that a candidate has come on top in an examination, after the normalisation process, the candidate’s position will remain intact,” he said. Benjamin added that score transformation was not peculiar to JAMB but is done in countries such as India, Kenya and United Kingdom.
