CultureRe: Eheneden Erediauwa To Be Crowned Oba Of Benin by johnmark1234(m): 3:59pm On Mar 15, 2016
diasporaman:
The Benin Crown Prince, Eheneden Erediauwa, was on Saturday in Benin formally installed as the Edaiken of Uselu after the successful completion of the mandatory traditional rites.

Erediauwa is expected to go through some traditional rites before he assumed the traditional stool of Edaiken of Uselu.

As the Edaiken of Uselu, the heir apparent to the Benin traditional stool is expected to be in Uselu, which will become his temporal place for 90 days.

The event attracted a large crowd of people, who thronged the palace.

Shops and other business outlets were also shut as a mark of honour and solidarity with the crown prince.

The Oba Market and some streets as well as roads housing some traditional shrines were cordon-off by security personnel and manned by colourfully-dressed palace chiefs.

The move was to assist Officials of the Federal Road Safety commission (FRSC) and traffic policemen with useful tips to ease human and vehicular movements of persons.

The event witnessed women groups adorned in Benin traditional attire, drummers, entertainers, youths, visitors, and palace chiefs.

Some commuters and lovers of Benin tradition also struggled to catch a glimpse of the event.

Politicians and top government officials, led by Gov. Adams Oshiomhole, defied the scorching sun to await the arrival of Erediauwa.

The convoy of the crowned prince in company of some first Class Benin Chiefs and combined security team arrived from his private residence in Benin to the palace at about 2 p.m.

Erediauwa, clad in white and red traditional regalia with a pair of dark glasses, immediately after his arrival, had a brief consultation with the palace chiefs.

This was followed by the performance of traditional rites at the palace.

At about 4pm, Erediauwa rode on a long convoy with Oshiomhole, his deputy, Mr Pius Odubu and other top government officials and palace chiefs to Edaiken palace.

This is a precursor to assuming the title of the Oba of Benin.

The heir-apparent to the Benin throne, was on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, formally initiated into the Royal Palace Chamber of Iwebo in conformity with the Bini custom

Mztarstrechy:
In continuation of its war against Boko Haram terrorism in the Northeast, the Nigerian army, on Monday, announced that its troops, in conjunction with civilian vigilantes, have dislodged Boko Haram terrorists at Gwashari village, Borno state.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations.

During the operation, one terrorist was shot dead and three were arrested while several fire arms, cash and some unnamed drugs were recovered.

The Nigerian army has in recent weeks mounted an increased attack with the sole intention of ending the Boko Haram insurgency.

It would be recalled that last week, a United States military officials testified that Boko Haram still holds some territories in Nigeria.

“Troops of 254 Task Force Battalion, 25 Task Force Brigade in conjunction with vigilantes have conducted clearance operation of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists at Gwashari village along Damboa-Bale road.

“During the patrol, the troops encountered some elements of the Boko Haram terrorists in which they killed one and captured 3 others. They also recovered 1 Dane gun, AK-47 rifle magazine, 2 knives, assorted drugs and the sum of N142,000 from the terrorists. “

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed laments over the ongoing rumour that he exposed the failure of buhari’s administration. The minister said I don’t know the reason behind the gross distortion of my comment on radio, but whatever the motive is, he claimed <<<

he never said that the Nigerian economy had gone out of the control of the current administration led by President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a reaction to the reports and criticisms that followed, the minister on Sunday, issued a statement through his special assistant, Segun Adeyemi, in which he said his words were distorted.

The minister described the comment as a gross misrepresentation of what he said when he appeared on the radio show on Saturday.

Speaking earlier on Saturday night at the third Kannywood Award in Abuja, Mohammed had said: “I know we are here for entertainment and glamour, but when a matter of national interest or importance is involved, everything else takes a back seat if only for a moment.

“Earlier today, I appeared on a radio show here in Abuja at which I spoke extensively on the issues affecting our country especially the economy.

“To my surprise, my views were twisted and I was reported to have said that the economy of our country is beyond the control of the President.“

According to him, this is a gross misrepresentation of what he said.
“I could not have said that the economy is out of the control of the President or the administration that he is leading.”

The minister said that the Buhari administration decided to turn the economic disaster that it inherited to a blessing by diversifying the economy.

“I think Kannywood is one of the examples of this diversification.

“I don’t know the reason behind the gross distortion of my comment on radio, but whatever the motive is, Nigerians should disregard such distortion and continue to support our President and his administration to take our country out of the problems,“ he said

PoliticsRe: Campaign Against Terrorism, Shiite Activities Launched In Lagos by johnmark1234(m): 8:09am On Mar 09, 2016
jeremyliness:
Campaign Against Terrorism, Shiite Activities Launched In Lagos

Following activities of extremist groups and the wanton killing of Nigerians, a group known as, Nigerians United Against Terrorism has launched a hash tag #KickAgainstShiiteExtremismTerrorism to discourage and curb activities of such groups.

The President of the group, Jude Feranmi who led other members of the group to launch the campaign yesterday in Lagos and Abuja simultaneously said from what he has seen, Shiites are mere common criminals disguising as adherents of a brand of Islam.

He said Nigerians must not take the threat posed by this group lightly because in the aftermath of their attack on the Army, they have issued video in which they threatened to unleash mayhem on the entire Nigerian state, whose authority-like Boko Haram can't be recognized.

Speaking at the launch, Feranmi said Nigerians must unite to defeat any form of extremism in the country, saying that experiences from the Shiite sect has shown how extremism breeds violence.

He said, "the launch of hashtag #KickAgainstShiiteExtremismTerrorism is a watershed in citizens’ contribution towards creating a secured Nigeria that is not at the mercy of terrorists.

"Do not be disappointed that we do not have any tangible to show you as you would have witnessed at the launch of a new building, product or any other thing with physical attributes."

He explained that the launch underscores the essence of Nigeria's unity and its supremacy over every form of worrisome terrorism, stressing that as the war against Boko Haram insurgents is being won in the north-east of the country, the consciousness Nigerians must be awaken to every other form of extremism that might crop up again as opposed to in 2009 when lack of vigilance allowed terrorism to gain roots.

He said, "#KickAgainstTerrorismShiiteExtremismTerrorism is a movement with a campaign to proactively act in manners that ensure extremism is not allowed to grow into full blown terrorism.

The campaign is driven by social media activists, bloggers and other well meaning Nigerians that are committed to safe and united country. In addition to what we are doing here today, we have resolved to launch street rallies in Owerri, Imo state and Port Harcourt, Rivers state against threats of terrorism to our country in pursuit of our determination that Nigeria remains peaceful."

According to him, the launch is a pointer to the world that Nigerians have collectively resolved to defeat every content of Boko Haram and their building cells. This is our contribution towards dismantling the terror group’s mystic. Proactively, we are also acting to prevent the Shiite Sect from remaining on the path of extremism, we are committed to ensuring that the Shiite Sect is not allow to militarize as being currently pursued by some of its leaders.

He said, "This is Nigeria, our constitutionally secular Nigeria. No group of persons or individual should again contemplate taking the nation through the horrors unleashed by Boko Haram again in the name of religion.
We must at this stage commend President Muhammadu Buhari, whose purposeful leadership heralded the containment of Boko Haram terrorists in record time and will facilitate their eventual defeat. The information available in the media and from people who have visited places that used to be hot spots indicate that displaced victims of the insurgency are now returning to their towns and villages to rebuild their lives with support from the Federal, State and local governments.

"Even with the uplifting news, , we cannot however afford to shut our eyes to emerging threats of extremism from the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, which also goes by the name of Shiite Sect. Available information and trend show that the terrorists are now regrouping under the leadership of the sect’s leader, Mr Ibrahim El-Zakzakky, a Kaduna state based Islamic scholar. We strongly believe this should not be dismissed as an issue for the army alone to handle. The federal government needs to act NOW."

PoliticsRe: Why Can’t Those Christians That Complained Go And Fight Terrorism - Buhari by johnmark1234(m): 8:06am On Mar 07, 2016
sirklin:
President Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed Nigeria’s membership of the Islamic Coalition Against Terrorism being spearheaded by Saudi Arabia amidst speculations of alleged plan to Islamise the country.

The President made the disclosure in an interview he granted to Al-Jazeera during his recent visit to Doha, Qatar, while the interview was aired on Saturday.

When asked whether Nigeria was part of the Islamic coalition, Buhari answered in the affirmative.

He attributed the reason behind the decision to the fact that there are terrorists in Nigeria who claim to be Muslims.

“We are part of it (the Islamic coalition) because we’ve got terrorists in Nigeria that everybody knows which claim that they are Islamic.

“So, if there’s an Islamic coalition to fight terrorism, Nigeria will be part of it because we are casualties of Islamic terrorism,” the President said.

Buhari said he discussed Nigeria’s membership of the coalition with King Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz during their meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia when he visited the country recently.

He however did not disclose how the membership of the Islamic coalition would be beneficial to Nigeria when asked to do so.

He said it would be wrong to disclose the details to the media.

“Well, that we mentioned under Lake Chad Basin Commission, our regional grouping compromising Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria and Benin and we dedicated a certain number of troops to be deployed in our own sub-region and I don’t think we have to tell the press the details of that,” he simply said.

Buhari however justified Nigeria’s membership of the Islamic coalition, saying there is nothing wrong in joining the coalition since members of the Boko Haram sect fighting in Nigeria have claimed they are Muslims even when their activities are anti-Islam.

He added that the Boko Haram itself had declared loyalty to ISIS

He said, “I’ve just told you it is the Boko Haram itself that declared loyalty to ISIS.

“ISIS is basically based in Islamic countries. Now, if there’s a coalition to fight Islamic terrorism, why can’t Nigeria be part of it, while those that are fighting in Nigeria as Boko Haram claim to be Muslims? But the way they are doing it is anti-Islamic.”

When confronted with the fact that Nigeria has large populations of both Muslims and Christians and that some Christians are complaining that he is giving Islamic identity to the country by his actions, Buhari wondered why the Christians who are complaining have not deemed it fit to confront members of Boko Haram in the North East or militants in the South South

“Why can’t those Christians that complained go and fight terrorism in Nigeria or fight the militancy in the South. It’s Nigeria that matters, not the opinion of some religious bigots,” he declared.

The President however denied any attempt to change the religious identity of the country.

He said, “How can I change the religious identity of Nigeria?

“No religion advocates hurting the innocent and just because the Muslims are the ones that claim to be Boko Haram and they are killing innocent people whether in the church, in the bus or in the market place, then I will just sit and look at them because I too am a Muslim? Islam is against injustice in any form.”

PoliticsRe: There Are Saboteurs In My Govt — Buhari by johnmark1234(m): 10:22am On Mar 06, 2016
tapread:
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed doubts about the loyalty of some key members of his administration.

However, the President did not name these officials.

The President spoke to Al-Jazeera during his recent visit to Doha, Qatar, an interview that was aired on Saturday.

When asked to be specific on his submission, which suggested that there were saboteurs in his government, Buhari replied, “Certainly!”

He said it would be wrong to assume that government officials, especially those who his government inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party will be 100 per cent loyal to his government.

The President said, “People who want to be fair to us to sit and reflect; from the President to the ministers to the permanent secretaries, they were all taken over after eight successive governments of those who are now in the opposition. So, we cannot assume that all of them are 100 per cent loyal to this government.”

He said his government had put machinery in place to reduce the cost of governance.

He cited the drastic reduction in the number of ministries as one of the ways his administration had reduced the cost of governance.

“I will like people to assess Nigeria, especially this government, on where we found ourselves. When we came in, we found out that there were 42 ministries and we found out that the economy could not take 42, so we reduced it to 24. We also removed 21 permanent secretaries,” he said.

Buhari also ruled out the creation of the Republic of Biafra from Nigeria, saying the country under his watch would not tolerate it.

He said those who were currently agitating for Biafra were not being guided by history.

He spoke on the challenges the country is currently facing such as the dwindling value of the naira, the Boko Haram war, his anti-corruption crusade and the new agitation by Biafra secessionists.

There has been renewed agitation for Biafra in recent times. The move is spearheaded by the Independent People of Biafra led by detained Nnamdi Kanu.

But Buhari said in the interview that those behind the agitation were joking with security.

He said it was unfortunate that people could be agitating for Biafra after about two million Nigerians were killed during the Biafra war.

He said it might be that the pro-Biafra protesters had not been born during the period.

“At least two millions Nigerians were killed in the Biafra war. And for somebody to wake up, may be they weren’t born. Looking for Biafra after two millions people were killed, they are joking with security and Nigeria won’t tolerate Biafra.”

Buhari said he would not reconsider his position that his administration would not devalue the naira despite the advice by the International Monetary Fund.

He said since Nigeria imported virtually everything from rice to toothpicks, it could not afford to devalue its currency.

“If it is against our national interest, why can’t we go against the IMF advice?” Buhari asked.

Buhari also said despite the drop in the international crude oil prices, which he said was affecting Nigeria negatively, the country would not quit the international oil-producing cartel, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. He said it was in Nigeria’s best interest to remain within OPEC.

“We were unable to diversify our economy, hence we are much more disadvantaged by the lower oil prices. I value the institution of OPEC and Nigeria will make the necessary sacrifice to remain in OPEC,” he said.

When asked if he was prepared to consider devaluing the naira, Buhari said, “No. I have explained that countries that play around with their currencies are countries that have enormous production capacities. They have factories in place. Their infrastructure, in terms of power, communications, and security, are virtually perfect. Nigeria imports virtually everything from rice to toothpicks. Now, if we don’t have the money to import those things, what is the value of further devaluing our naira?”

The President said he had not failed in his promise to put an end to the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

He said Nigeria under his watch had successfully dislodged the sect from the 14 local government areas it was holding at the inception of his administration.

“I have not failed. When we came in, Boko Haram was effectively in 14 local governments. Nigeria has 774 local governments. They hoisted their flags and they said they had a certain caliphate but today they no longer have the capacity to hold any local government,” Buhari said.

When confronted with the fact that members of the sect were still killing people in parts of the country, the President said they had resorted to attacking “soft targets.”

Although he admitted that such kinds of terrorism would be difficult to eliminate because of technology, he boasted that Boko Haram could no longer hold any local government or attack military installations as they used to do.

He said, “They have reverted to improvised explosive devices blowing soft targets, and that will be a kind of terrorism which will be difficult to eliminate because it is technological, but they cannot hold any local government again.

“They are using technology but they cannot carry out organised attacks, overrun police post, attack military installations, they cannot do that now.”

The President also spoke on the ongoing probe into the diversion of funds meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition for the Nigerian military to fight the insurgency.

Buhari said, “The fact that people that are identified as taking public funds without going through the normal system of getting public funds are being detained and they are being interrogated so that there will be successful convictions. If people are in a hurry, what have they been doing in the last 16 years? Didn’t they know what was happening in the last 16 years?

“We are part of it because we have got terrorists in Nigeria that everybody knows which claims that they are Islamic. So if there is an Islamic correlation, to fight terrorism, Nigeria will be part of it because we are casualties of Islamist terrorism.”

PoliticsRe: "Before We Become A Hated Region" by johnmark1234(m): 11:41am On Feb 18, 2016
MORNDEW:
,During the controversy surrounding the then President Yar'Adua's illness and the call for then Vice President Goodluck E. Jonathan to be made the acting President, It was the Save Nigeria Group (SNG) led by Pastor Tunde Bakare, Prof. Wole Soyinka and other well meaning Nigerians that took it upon themselves to organize protests and rallies to demand that Jonathan be made an acting President. These were Yoruba men who believe the right thing should be done at all times. With the pressure from these groups and the international communities coupled with divine providence, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was made an acting President in 2010.

During this time, Ankio Briggs, Edwin Clarke, Akpabio, and other acclaimed activists from Niger Delta never organized any rally, not even in PortHarcourt, Warri or Calabar. They remained silent. Fortunately when Jonathan won Presidential in 2011 and during his reign as President, the wife who is constitutionally irrelevant decided to throw shades and insults to a man who fought for her husband's emergence as the President of the most populous Nation in Africa.

During this time, the South East who later adopted Jonathan as their son, never blocked the Onitsha bridge to demand that he be made President, they were doing "Sit down look". But fast forward to 2015 General elections, Jonathan became the best thing after Ojukwu and they will do anything to bring him back to power. Incase many don't know, the acclaimed love for Jonathan was not due to the fact that Jonathan was the best for the presidency, or that he was truly their son as they claimed but because they enjoyed lots of Privileges and juicy positions during his reign as the President many of which plunged us into this present economic quagmire.

They told everyone who cared to listen how Jonathan was not allowed to rule in peace, how Apc caused every problem in Nigeria how they are Islamic party, Northern party etc. They came up with the rubbish that Amaechi is a betrayer and Judas. (I guess Edwin Clarke now is also a betrayer going by his recent utterances and dumping of the PDP) Like their gullible followers who buys into anything they utter, even when they do so for political gains, they replicated it everywhere possible and even took such illiterate sentiments that should have been questioned to the polls and crashed. Today they blame every other region for their woes.

The above background form the basis of this article. After losing the election, instead of learning from the loss that Nigerians were fed up of gross incompetence and pseudo leadership exhibited by President Jonathan, they continued with their irrelevant party sentiments, they pushed unnecessary sentiments to the South-South. This days you will hear such nonsense from some section of the youths in South-South as APC has no place in South-South and South-East, they are Islamic party with Islamic agenda and other nonsense.

I must remind my Brothers from the South-South that as at 2014, there were two States that belonged to the APC (Rivers and Edo). That the founding fathers of the PDP came from different region of the country and so also is APC. The APC has among its founding fathers Ogbonaya Onu, Tom Ikimi, Rochas Okorocha etc. From the South-South and South-East so how then is it a Northern or Islamic party? It must pointed out that every party was registered at the National level and serves as a platform for anyone to achieve its political ambition and contribute their own quota to national building. No party was registered as a Regional one.

The nonsense of terming a political party as religious or regional will not profit our Region the South-South. We must resist such nonsense being sold to us by political miscalculators. Every political party should be embraced by our people. We should not demonize any political party out of sentiments but we should criticize them based on facts, sound arguments, and having the interest of the Nation at heart. No matter what they do or say, if they must rule this nation, the votes of South-South and South-East will not be enough to earn them the Presidency seat. So lets allow them continue in their irrelevant sentiments. But when any of their politicians want to achieve their political ambition, they will jump into such party they hated yet their gullible, illiterate followers being used. Like many of them are doing now.

I am appealing to my South-South brothers and sisters especially the youths not to join in this nonsense of terming a political party as belonging to a particular region or religion. When you say a political party is for a region or religion, what do you mean by that? What do u tend to achieve with that? How do you want such region to feel about you? Before we become hated like the miscalculating region lets put a stop to that nonsense. We will rule this country again that is certain. If we must do that we will need the support of other regions and a political party to achieve that. We must not play into the hand of mischief makers, discord creators. Let us stop the saying that a particular party is for a region or religion and has no place in South-South. It will do us no good.
