Six suspected kidnappers arrested in Lagos By Jude Isiguzo Published Yesterday News Rating: Unrated The police in Lagos yesterday paraded six suspected kidnappers, who allegedly abducted a one-year-old boy. A fake property developer, who collected N5.8 million from 32 people for 15 apartments, was also paraded. The alleged kidnappers were said to have demanded a N10 million ransom for the release of their victim. Among the kidnap suspects are a 16-year- old girl in whose custody the boy was kept; an undergraduate of Business Administration from the Abia State University, Uturu, and a pastor in one of the new generation churches. The prime suspect, Ikenna Uzo, a 24-year-old apprentice, said he needed money for the recording of his musical video album and since nobody was willing to sponsor him, he decided to go into crime. He said their victim is the son of his neighbour at Trade Fair International Market where he is an apprentice in a bureau de change. Narrating how the crime was carried out, Uzo told The Nation that the boy walked into his office last Thursday, and immediately he came in, he told his master’s son, Chimezie Eze, a 100-level undergraduate student, to assist him take the boy away. He said the abducted boy was kept in an hotel in Olodi-Apapa. The next day, he called the pastor and told him about the baby. Uzo said he gave the pastor the boy’s mother’s phone number and directed him to demand N1 million since he (Uzo) would need only N250, 000 for the album recording. The pastor called the boy’s parents and demanded a N10 million ransom, threatening to kill the boy if the money was not paid. It was learnt that the boy’s parents suspected Uzo’s involvement and subsequently informed the police who arrested him. At the station, Uzo confessed to the crime and also named his accomplices. The property developer, Abiodun Atanda, allegedly collected money from unsuspecting house seekers for a yet-to-be completed building and escaped with the money. He was arrested by the police, following information from some of his victims. Police spokesman Frank Mba said the cases are being investigated, adding that the suspects will soon be charged to court. most criminals living in other states are mostly igbos or they are the igbos comming from the east. |
Trial begins for alleged killer of ‘witches’ By Iniobong Ekponta Published Today News Rating: Unrated •Bishop Williams, his brother and the alleged ‘witches’ photo: Inibong Ekponta A suspect arrested in connection with the Akwa Ibom child-witch saga, is expected to go on trial today at the Uyo High Court. The Commissioner for Justice, Chief Victor Iyanam, has presented a compendium of what constitutes children’s rights and punishment to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Youths Development, Mrs. Eunice Thomas. Speaking to The Nation in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, Iyanam said the principal suspect, Bishop Sunday Okon Williams, a suspected fake spiritualist alleged to have killed no fewer than 110 children in the process of exorcising the spirit of witchcraft from them, would go on trial today. Williams, popularly called Ulup Aya, which translates into "There is nothing under the sun that I cannot do" in the native Mbo dialect, was arrested November 29, last year in Orukim Village in Mbo Local Government Area of the State. Williams, who owns a Spiritual Healing Home in Ibaka village, was arrested with his brother and two children, whom he claimed were brought for spiritual cleansing by their mother. His arrest followed the interview he granted the international wire services- United Kingdom-based Channel 4 on November 12, last year in which he claimed to have killed 110 children possessed by the spirit of witchcraft. But the suspect, who was paraded before reporters at State Police Command Headquarters at the Ikot Akpanabia in December, denied the allegation. He said: "I did not say in the interview that I killed 110 children. What I said was that I only removed the spirit of witchcraft in them". Ulup Aya, who confessed to being a former-convict of a similar crime, charges between N.2million and N.4million; depending on the gravity of the problem. Last year, Akwa Ibom State became a centre of international odium when the interview was aired, forcing outrage from Akwa Ibomites in Nigeria and the Diaspora. The British Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)- Stepping Stone International–working in collaboration with the Child Rights Advocacy Centre in Eket, where the stigmatised children are kept for rehabilitation, led 150 suspected child witches in a mass protest to Governor Godswill Akpabio at the Government House, Uyo. Armed with a 400-page petition, the leader of the NGO, Mr. Garry Foxcroft, said: "A situation where children are burnt to death, buried alive, matcheted to death or made to rot away in the evil forest is unacceptable in the 21st century". Foxcroft, who also led the children to the House of Assembly, appealed to Akpabio to facilitate the domestication of the Child Rights Act in the statutes book. Akpabio swung into action, urging the commissioners of Information, Aniekan Umana; Health, Luisa Ukpe and Women Affairs, Eunice Thomas, to ensure rehabilitation of the children, who are now camped at CRARN centre in Eket. Besides, he facilitated the passage of the Child Rights Bill, which he has signed into law and empowered law enforcement agencies to clampdown on fake pastors, spiritualists and healing homes. To safeguard the rights of children, Akwa Ibomites in the diaspora- Mboho Ndito Akwa Ibom in Ireland and United Kingdom– is organising the first children conference in London on May 30. Two robbery suspects blame juju for arrest From YINKA FABOWALE, Ibadan Thursday, May 14, 2009 who doubt the efficacy of traditional oath-taking may have a re-think, at least, after reading this story. Idris Rasaq and David Olayinka were night guards engaged by residents of Olaoluwa Estate at Seke, Idi-Mango area of Ibadan, Oyo State , to protect their lives and property from night marauders. Rasaq, 29, had been on the job for two months, before inviting his accomplice, Olayinka after the estate inhabitants put out an advertisement to reinforce vigilante activities in the area. Now, the procedure for recruitment is that the successful candidate must swear to an oath, that if he betrays his profession, he would be caught and end up in ignominy and disgrace. The duo apparently took the oath superficially, but were to regret it, when they succumbed to Lucifer’s tempting. It was the night of April 12, 2009, Idris and Olayinka ambushed a resident of the estate, whose name was simply given as Mr. Niyi, near the gate of the estate and robbed him of cash and other belongings, including his phone on his way back from work. They did not stop there. They led their victim at gun-point, to his house, where they further dispossessed his wife and mother of other valuables and jewelry. As it were, the victims could not recognize the robbers under the darkness of the night, more so as they were heavily disguised. The watchmen-turned robbers were, however, to run out of luck, when two days later, one of them, Olayinka, approached Mr. Niyi, begging him for money to help defray the cost of his upcoming wedding. In the process, he unwittingly brought out the stolen phone. A shocked Niyi promptly alerted the police, who arrested Olayinka and later his accomplice. Olayinka was barely two weeks old on the job. Now in detention, the two suspects confessed that they had been hiding in the dark to rob residents of the estate they were hired to protect. They said their arrest had to do with the oath they took before taking up the job. Said, 25-year old Olayinka: “I didn’t want to do it, but my friend here said it will be only once, that’s why I agreed with him, because I needed money badly, it was poverty that pushed me into it” His accomplice, Rasaq was all regrets: “I didn’t know what pushed me into it. My wife will not be happy when she hears this.” The Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Baba Bolanta, who paraded the suspects alongside other hoodlums recently, warned the public to investigate and ascertain the integrity of those they employed for security jobs. The police boss disclosed that there was a procedure, whereby members of vigilance groups of any community were registered with the police, to regulate and monitor their activities. He, therefore, enjoined members of the public to avail themselves of this security arrangement. Bolanta commended the people of the state for providing the police with useful information, which he said had helped his command tremendously, in crime-fighting. Also paraded with the suspects were, a two-man robbery gang arrested by a police patrol team at Dugbe Alawo, on a rainy night, members of a kidnap syndicate and suspected oil pipeline vandals. |
Police kill 4 kidnap suspects in Anambra - As gunmen kidnap engineer Sylvanus Eze, Akwa and Sylvester Idowu, Warri - 14.05.2009 Four suspected kidnappers have been killed in Anambra State, while about five others were arrested by the state police command. The state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Amusa Bello, told newsmen in Awka on Wednesday, that “the only good thing for the kidnappers is to leave the state.” Bello also said that several armed robbery suspects were also apprehended on Tuesday by his command. Both the robbery and suspected kidnappers, according to Bello, would be charged to court by the command. He said those who were killed engaged his men in a shoot-out at Abagana and Enugwu-Ukwu respectively last week. According to him, “Anambra State will no longer contain them,” adding that the state police command was still in the trail of others. “We cannot continue living in fear in the state, we are now ready for them, for the past two weeks, those who left Awka for Onitsha to live for fear of their lives are returning to the capital city again. “In fact, we have made a lot of arrests, both the kidnappers and the robbers, most of them have gone into abeyance. The operation is on-going, we are not going to rest.” Meanwhile, unknown gunmen on Tuesday night kidnapped a petroleum engineer simply identified as Mr. Okoh at Ekpan area of Warri in Delta State. Security sources disclosed to the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday that the victim, whose full identity was yet to be ascertained, was abducted at about 7.30 p.m. close to his residence. It was learnt that the gunmen whisked their victim away in an Infinity jeep without any resistance from neighbours or passers by. http://www.tribune.com.ng/14052009/news/news15.html |

Rape victim cries out for justice Written by Dennis Agbo Thursday, 14 May 2009 ABAKALIKI—A female rape victim in Abakaliki (name withheld) whose case against the male suspected rapist was yesterday withdrawn in an Abakaliki magistrate court has cried foul that the state judiciary has perverted justice by setting the rape suspect free. The rapist suspect, Chijioke Igwe, younger brother to the wife of the State Chief Judge, Justice Alloy Nwankwo was arraigned before the the magistrate court for allegedly raping the 17 years old girl at gun point but when the case came up at the magistrate court, the presiding magistrate Mr. Ojemba Isu-Oko to the amazement of all announced the withdrawal of the two count charges against Igwe, who also is a staff of the state customary court of appeal. Igwe was immediately whisked away to unknown destination. The Magistrate, Isu-Oko in announcing the withdrawal of the case, claimed that the Chief Registrar, Stella Onuorah had given him a verbal directive that the case be withdrawn as ‘order from above’ but when newsmen accosted Mrs. Onuorah, she denied giving such directive. Efforts to get the Chief Judge’s reaction failed as his Personal Assistance, Chidi Nwangele, obstructed newsmen from speaking with the Chief Judge. Unconfirmed reports yesterday however, said that the court has gone back to the case file and that Igwe was remanded in prison custody, while the case file will be transferred to Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) but checks yesterday revealed that the suspect Igwe is not in prison custody, while one Mrs. Oyim who was said to have whispered into the Magistrate’s ear before he announced the withdrawal of the case has been arrested. Father of the rape victim, had appealed to the state Governor, Chief Martin Elechi and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Augustine Nwankwegu to intervene in the matter to ensure that justice was down. The father of the victim accused the wife of the state Chief Judge, who is the elder sister to the accused of masterminding the decision of the Chief Magistrate to commit such miscarriage of justice. |
Why we kidnapped two-year-old boy – Suspects By Sola Adebayo, Francis Falola, Chukwudi Akasike and Olalekan Adetayo Published: Wednesday, 13 May 2009 The leader of the six suspects arrested in connection with the recent kidnapping of a two-year-old boy in Lagos, told journalists on Tuesday that he spearheaded the crime in order to raise money to boost his music career. The suspect, 24-year-old Ikenna Uzor, is a resident of 67, Fasasi Street, Olodi Apapa, Ajegunle. Uzor claimed to be a bureau de change operator at the Trade Fair Complex on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. One of the suspects, Chukwuma Emmanuel, told journalists that Uzor had earlier approached him and intimated to him of his decision to raise money by kidnapping a boy. Although 24-year-old Emmanuel claimed that he was not part of the crime when finally hatched, he said that immediately he heard the announcement concerning a missing boy in the market, his mind went to Uzor. ”I quickly went to him and asked him if he was responsible for the kidnapping and he told me that the boy was safe,” Emmanuel said. Another suspect said to be a pastor‘s son, Chigozie Eze, claimed that it was Uzor and Emmanuel who brought the boy into his house at 69, Fasasi Street, claiming that the victim was their cousin. The only female suspect, Francisca Agukwe, claimed that she was implicated because she went to visit her pastor‘s son. The victim‘s mother who craved anonymity, said that it was difficult to believe that Uzor was responsible for the kidnap because as a neighbour, he always played with her son and was one of those searching frantically for the boy when he was discovered missing. The Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Frank Mba, said that the suspects would be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others. Meanwhile, three students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State have been arrested for kidnapping, detaining and torturing a 16-year-old boy, Mohammed Salisu. One of our correspondents gathered that the students lured the secondary school boy out of his family house and locked him up at one of the students‘ residences in Bosso area of Minna over allegation of theft of a laptop. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Niger State Command, Mr. Richard Oguche, confirmed the arrest in an interview with our correspondent in Minna on Tuesday. Oguche disclosed that the police had already commenced an investigation into the matter and would soon charge the students to court. Also, the Kwara State Police Command, on Tuesday paraded three suspects, including a woman, for allegedly kidnapping an 11-year-old student, Abiola Nathaniel, in Igbaja. The victim‘s mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Nathaniel, said she sent her daughter on an errand to buy melon and sponge only for her to disappear for three days. According to her, after fruitless efforts to locate her, she reported the case to the traditional head of Okeya where she resides. Nathaniel said after the third day, her daughter surfaced and claimed that one Abraham Opadotun and two others forcibly carried her and tied her mouth and hands with cloth and at about midnight, took her to one Mr. Odeyemi‘s house where she was kept for three days. She said her daughter was later released after Odeyemi learnt that the police had arrested other suspects. The Police Public Relations Officer at the state command, Mr. Dabo Ezekiel, said that investigation was still ongoing on the matter. Kidnappers on Tuesday also asked four children of the octogenarian former President General of Isoko Development Union, Chief Oghale Ononeme, resident in Europe to raise N200m to free their father from captivity. The hoodlums, in a telephone conversation with the family of the captive, advised that four of the children of the embattled ethnic leader should be speedily contacted to send the money to Nigeria to free their father. The hoodlums who abducted Ononeme last Friday had demanded a N200m ransom. They insisted on the payment of the ransom as a condition to release the retired permanent secretary. In another development, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed into law, the Anti-kidnapping Bill with death penalty for offenders. Tagged, ‘The Akwa Ibom State Internal Security and Enforcement Bill 2009‘, the bill was passed into law during the House‘s sitting on Tuesday, following a motion moved by Mr. Samuel Ikon, seconded by Chief Jack Udota and unanimously supported by all the members. The law, which took effect from May 12, 2009, prescribed life imprisonment for any person who has an intention to maim or kill or do some grievous harm to any person, unlawfully causes a bomb or any explosive substance to explode, among others |

Four arrested with human skulls By Yemi Dalemo, Ijebu-Ode Published: Tuesday, 12 May 2009 Four suspected ritualists who specialise in cutting and selling human skulls were on Friday night arrested by security operatives of the Muslim community in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State. Two of them, Shina Sulaiman (25) and Yomi Aregbe (20) were arrested at Oke Agbo Muslim Cemetery at about 8pm. According to a community leader in Ijebu Igbo, Alhaji Daodu Sulaiman, and Alhaji Shittu Muritala, the skulls of over 73 per cent of the corpses buried at the cemetery have been lost to the suspects. Sulaiman said the act which had been going on for over 10 years, became a source of concern to the people as the act was also extended to the Christian cemetry beside theirs at Oke Agbo and this forced the Muslims to engage a security man to guard the place. He said even with this, the suspects still found their way in and engaged in the illict trade until two youths, Alfa Shittu Muritala and a colleague volunteered to assist the guard in nabbing the perpetrators. Muritala told our correspondent that on Friday night, they met the two young men at the cemetry and allowed them to finish their job before challenging them. He noted that two skulls were found on them at the graveside of a deceased. One fresh head of a woman buried on Thursday and another dry head. They were later handed over to the police in Ijebu Igbo. The suspects named two herbalists who they claimed usually bought the heads from them at the rate of between N2500 and N3000. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, and the Ijebu Area Commander, Mr. Oyedokun Omolodun, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Tuesday. Adejobi said the suspects would be transferred to the state command from where they would be charged to court after an investigation.
