Committee Explains Prevalence Of HIV/AIDS In Akwa Ibom
By CLIFFORD AGBAJOR

UYO - The compact nature of Akwa Ibom communities is one of the major reasons for the high rate of HIV and AIDS spread in the state.

Dr Martin Akpan, Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Action Committee on HIV and AIDS (SACA), gave the reasons in an interview with newsmen in Uyo.

“We dropped from the second position to the fourth on the national chart on HIV and AIDS, but it is still not good enough.

“Akwa Ibom is a very compact state with a very mobile population and in terms of development it is a big boost to our state.

“But in terms of the spread of communicable diseases it is a big disadvantage,’’ he said. The SACA boss also blamed what he called “prophets of denial” as some of the factors responsible for the spread of the scourge in Akwa Ibom.

“Some churches tell their members that HIV and AIDS are not real. “Some of these mushroom churches and so-called pastors preach to their adherents that if there is anything like HIV and AIDS, it is not caused by a virus.

“They tell their followers that HIV and AIDS are caused by the power of witchcraft, which is not true,” he said.

Akpan also listed stigmatisation as another factor that promoted the spread of HIV and AIDS in Akwa Ibom.

“By the time you discriminate against people living with AIDS, they go underground and continue to spread the virus secretly to people.

“We cannot talk about the high prevalence of HIV and AIDS in the state without talking about the activities of the riverine people.

“The main occupation of the people is fishing. Most of them leave their homes to stay in fishing settlements, which has grave implication for family unity and fidelity.

“In the 2005 zero prevalence survey, we discovered that the highest prevalence rate was recorded in Oron in the entire country,” he said.

The SACA chief said that the activities of “medical quacks’’ were part of the problems. “Most of them use needles and razors and these are things that actually drive the epidemic in the state,’’ Akpan said.

He said among the factors identified for the spread of AIDS during field studies was that of the “unprotected” shoreline of Akwa Ibom.

“This attracts people to the state and most of them foreigners with their own problems,” he said.

The emphasis on akwaibom makes me sad.these are probably the most honest and humble people in nigeria.there major offence being fighting to the last of the biafran war.these people are marginalised in both nigeria and south-south politics.for those who may not know, akwaibom is 2nd only to rivers in oil production.as long as this neglect and marginalisation continues we'll still be seeing house girls, maids and prostitutes from this rich state.akwaibom and crossriver deserve a fair share of their contribution to nigerian income.dualized roads must be constructed to link various communities with aba, calabar and uyo.good schools must be provided, there should be high federal gov. presence in uyo and calabar.

blacksta:
THE Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, who is a former deputy governor of Abia State, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, narrowly escaped being kidnapped on Sunday night.

The kidnappers, according to Senator Abaribe, ambushed his convoy as he was returning from a consultative meeting held by the senator representing Abia Central, Senator Nkechi Nworgu, in Aba.

Senator Abaribe, in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, said that on sighting his convoy, the gunmen, who were in an ash colour Toyota Camry car, opened fire on him, prompting his police orderly to return fire.

He said that while his police orderly killed one of the kidnappers, the policeman was also hit by bullets and he died in the process. Narrating the incident in a text message, Abaribe said: “A policeman, a mopol with me was killed just now in an ambush by armed men in an ash colour Toyota Camry who opened fire on us about one kilometre to my house at 8.35 pm.

“If the policeman did not return fire, I would have been a dead man. The returned fire also made them retreat and they (the kidnappers) later encountered the anti-terrorist police who exchanged fire with them. They abandoned the Toyota car and a kidnap victim, a lecturer at the Abia State Polytechnic, was found in the booth of the car.

Fraudsters clone Gov's phone

UMUAHIA — GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia State has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, over the cloning and use of his telephone line by unknown persons to dupe unsuspecting Nigerians.
According to the governor, the development was a source embarrassment to him as the fraudsters claim to be the

GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia Stategovernor while extorting money from unsuspecting members of the public.

In the letter dated May 20, 2009, entitled “Blocking and Fraudulent Use of My MTN line”, and personally signed by the governor, he urged the Police chief to investigate the matter with the aim of bringing the culprits to book.
The letter reads:

“I write to draw your attention to a case of fraudulent blocking and usurpation of my MTN GSM phone number and its subsequent deployment for criminal use.

“For about a week now, starting from May 11, 2009, I noticed that my MTN number 07037723390 was blocked, as I was unable to make or receive calls on it. Thinking it was a network problem, I ignored it and used my other phones for my communication.

“To my utter shock and consternation, I have realized that an unknown individual is using that same line to extort money from government officials, contractors, friends, politicians and my associates whose phone numbers were stored on my SIM card.

“As I write this, unknown fictitious people are making and receiving calls on my line, giving the impression that it is I who is using the said line. The usurpers of my line have gone ahead to send text messages to people, posing as me, coercing them to pay in huge sums of money into bank accounts for diverse reasons. Some people have already fallen prey to those antics.

“I make this report to compel a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the blocking and cloning of my line and to put it on record that even though the number belongs to me, I have not been in control of the use it has been put to in the last two weeks.

“It is my desire that this matter be brought to an expeditious conclusion to avoid embarrassments to me and financial losses to my friends and associates”, the governor said in the letter.

Vanguard gathered that many highly-placed individuals have fallen victim of the trend in the recent past, as fraudsters, using the contacts of ministers, governors, ex-governors, industry captains and other society bigwigs, have swindled people of their money.

Ohanaeze berates Lagos over ban on Eze Ndigbo
Written by James Ezema
Friday, 22 May 2009

As Igbo leaders continue to greet Lagos State Government’s reported withdrawal of its recognition of Eze Ndigbo title in the state with outcry, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a pan-Igbo socio-cultural group, has said the state government has no power to outlaw the title as it (the title) was chosen by Ndigbo as a rallying point outside Igboland to further unity and welfare of Igbo people in diaspora. President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in the state, Chief John Nzewi, made the position of the group known at a press briefing in Lagos, explaining that the Eze Ndigbo title is a matter that concerns Igbo culture and tradition.  Present at the briefing were the secretary, Chief Thompson Ohia, other state executives and chairmen of Ohanaeze in local councils in the state.

The body observed that the state government was too hasty in arriving at its decision without consultation with those who created the title both at home and abroad, adding that there is only one Eze Ndigbo in the state in person of Eze Nwabueze Ohazurike.

“It is on record that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, just like many other Igbo socio-cultural organisations, played a crucial role in the creation of the title of Eze Ndigbo outside Igboland. “The title has served us effectively as a rallying point in towns and cities outside Igboland. It has helped us in preserving and projecting our culture also,” Ohanaeze said

Noting that there are evident abuses of the title, the group reiterated the believe of Ndigbo in the title, stating that it was wrong to believe that there is proliferation in the title in the state, saying the title of Eze Udo (the

peace makers) at local government level should not be misunderstood as proliferation of Eze Ndigbo title.

CrimeGirl, 16 Survives Ritual Attack In Imo State by jona2(op): 1:20am On May 22, 2009
Girl, 16 Survives Ritual Attack
. Flogged, tied up and locked up for 72 hours

The 2008 Christmas week would for a long time, remain fresh in the memory of Miss Ngozi Eneremadu . The 27th day of December , 2008 to be precise, has been burnt into her mind with blood and pain.

Ngozi Eneremadu's woes started on the 24th day of December, 2008 when she was invited to the house of one Mr. Chimeremeze Chigaemezu, the proprietor of Chinbest Guest House in Umuguma Housing Estate in Owerri West LGA, by one Miss Vivian, a relative of the said Chimeremeze who was supposed to be Miss Eneremadu’s friend.

On getting to the place, Ngozi Eneremadu was told that they needed her to assist them in the Christmas sales at the Chinbest Guest House.

Eneremdu, being a young, unemployed school leaver, accepted the offer and started work immediately. As contained in a petition to the Imo state police commissioner, three days after commencement of work at Chinbest Guest House, on the 27th day of December, after the Christmas and Boxing day celebration , the proprietor of Chinbest Guest House, at about 11:30 pm on the fateful day, cornered Miss Ngozi Eneremadu and forced her to drink excessive quantity of alcohol.

When she became tipsy with alcohol and posed minimal resistance, Chimeremeze and Vivian allegedly dragged her to the car, forced her in and drove her to the proprietor’s residence.

On getting to Chimeremeze’s house, she was taken into the bedroom where she was ordered to UnCloth at gun point.

Being a premeditated act, when Ngozi Eneremadu refused to UnCloth, a cable wire was instantly brandished by Chimeremeze with which he started beating and flogging the helpless girl. The attack on Miss Eneremadu was viciously maniacal as Chimeremeze was alleged to have torn her cloths from her body, to bits and pieces. Naked , he shoved her to the floor and brutally lashed and excoriated her back, buttocks and legs.

Miss Ngozi Eneremadu’s shout for help was drowned by the compact disc audio player which was turned up to the highest volume by Chimeremeze to cover his savage action.

When Miss Eneremadu, mustered up a little energy and attempted to escape, she was pushed back into the room by Vivian, the friend who invited her to the Guest House.

As the flogging resumed with more intense brutality, her body convulsed severally and was freely dripping blood from over 32 bleeding stripes. Having lost so much blood, Ngozi Eneremadu drifted in and out of unconsciousness until she eventually passed out .

Regaining consciousness, Ngozi Eneremadu noticed three men hovering around , inspecting her body. In a petition to the Imo State Commissioner of police, Barrister D.U Enwere of the Equity Chambers , stated that the ritualists, “owing to the bruises and scars, on Ngozi Eneremadu’s body were overheard telling Chigaemezu that “ the girl would no longer be fit for the ceremony”

Huhuonline.com also gathered that when Chigaemezu tried to convince the trio, one of them firmly stated in a tone of finality, “she would be rejected”.

Disappointed, Chimeremeze dashed into the room and resumed the flogging, beating and torture. His depravity reached a height when he poured a portion of diluted acid on the girl’s leg which dripped down her thigh narrowly missing her private part.

At this juncture Ngozi Eneremadu was totally exhausted she told huhuonline.com that , she was certain, she would die. She was then tied up and kept under lock and key for over three days, according to her petition

Her condition was progressively deteriorating . When Chimeremeze realized that her state has become dangerously critical, he untied and gave Ngozi Eneremadu the sum of N5,000 for medical treatment and released her to go.

Huhuonline.com Further gathered that Miss Eneremadu was admitted in hospital for over a week. The doctor was alarmed as he could not imagine how a girl as young as Miss Eneremadu could have been so callously brutalized.

Following the petition to the police commissioner , a team of detectives was dispatched to Chinbest Guest House where they were said to have arrested Mr. Chimeremeze.

Ironically, Chimeremeze was said not to have been detained as the petitioners are alleging that the woman in-charge of the Monitoring Unit of the Imo state police command who are handling the case have according to their assessment, been clearly compromised as the woman is more interested in finding a way out for the culprit.

At this juncture, it is however clear that the petitioners are clearly at a loss as to how to prosecute their case, since as at the time of this report, they were still unable to confirm the real name of the culprit they petitioned and want to prosecute.

When huhuonline.com spoke with Chimeremeze on the phone, he was all brags threatening to take the case beyond the state to the Police headquarters, Abuja . He however alleged that the victim was a criminal. Hear him, “If you want to know anything about the case now, go to the Police because the matter is with the police. All I can tell you now is that the girl in question is a armed robber.”

Ironically, huhuonline.com gathered from sources close to the victim that Chimeremeze has already offered the sum of N50,000 to the girl for compensation and medical expenses. This money was rejected by the girl as it amounted to nothing compared to the torture and pain she has undergone.

When huhuonline.com sought the view of the Imo state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Linus Nwaiwu, he stated that the Imo State Police command would not tolerate any form of barbarism from any quarters, stressing that the command would get to the root of the vicious attack on Miss Ngozi Eneremadu.

18-month-old baby allegedly raped to death
22.05.2009

The police in Imo State are working to unravel the circumstances leading to the death of an 18-month-old child alleged to have been raped to death.

The only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Iwuagwu of Odumara Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, met her death on May 16 at the hands of a suspected rapist (name withheld).

The suspect is also from the same community and is already in police custody at the state police headquarters, Owerri.

Some persons in the community who spoke on the condition of anonymity with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) were, however, divided in their opinion about the incident.

While some of them alleged that the suspect killed the girl for rituals, others were of the opinion that he kidnapped her for ransom.

A section also said the deceased was raped to death. When contacted, the state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, confirmed the incident, but said investigation was in progress.

While confessing to the crime, the suspect recounted how a voice had been tormenting him and leading him into “doing things that tingle the ear.”

He said he used to be a second-hand cloth dealer in Cote d’ Ivoire before the voice told him to come back home.

Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in the mortuary at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, for post-mortem examination.

How police, soldiers burnt Abala community witness (1)

It was more like a commando operation, a repeat of the Odi massacre when soldiers stormed and set the place on fire. But this time around, it happened in Abala autonomous community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State. However, police and the community are trading words over who takes responsibility for this crime against humanity. Whereas the community is blaming the police and soldiers, the police, on the other hand, insist they had nothing to do with carnage. In this interview with Correspondent, Ben Duru, an eyewitness who doesn't want his picture printed, Nnenna Udo, traced the root of the crisis to the time the police and soldiers stormed the community. Excerpts:

Could you tell us what happened in your community recently?

Last Wednesday about 4 O'clock in the evening, we were in the village, Abala autonomous community, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, I travelled home. Actually, I travelled home on Tuesday evening and in the morning I saw the villagers running to every direction in confusion. I asked them what was happening, but no one stopped to answer me, they kept running in different direction. I now discovered that policemen and soldiers were gathered everywhere, burning houses. So, everyone in the village fled to different directions.

What actually did you see?

I saw the policemen and soldiers setting houses on fire. Before that day the policemen and soldiers were trailing a gang of armed robbers, passing through the area to a nearby community. If you know Abala community very well, it is like a roundabout with one road leading to Akwa Ibom State and the other leading to Ukwa Local Government, that is, Azumiri, Akirika and the one leading to Abala. So, they were trailing these armed robbers. Before the police came we saw many vehicles passing through the village and within a short time we also saw police vehicle following the vehicles used by the armed robbery suspects. About four in the evening we started hearing gunshots everywhere and people started running in confusion. People thought there was an invasion of the village nearby, because it was so serious that even where we were staying people were already fleeing. The following day police and soldiers came and started burning houses.
About how many houses were burnt on that day?

The houses the police and soldiers burnt were more than 50, especially in my own area. In my compound, we had three buildings burnt; my father owns two and my uncle one. These buildings, including the kitchen the police and soldiers burnt all. The thing is too much to understand. You see people who stored oil in drums in their houses; everything went up in flames. The house of an Assistant Commissioner of Police from the area was also burnt; another storey building belonging to a popular businessman based in Aba was completely razed to the ground. This man deals in building materials and had some of his materials in the house; everything was totally burnt. Houses that belong to important men in the village were also completely burnt, and the worse thing was that most of these people were not around when this thing happened. Nobody knew what the police and soldiers were going to do, we suddenly saw them and immediately they entered the village they started to setting the buildings ablaze. Properties worth billions of naira were lost because majority of the people, especially the important people in our community were not around when the burning started.
Did anybody in the village get to know why the police and soldiers embarked on this action?

We don't know, and the police and soldiers did not tell us anything. In fact, immediately they entered the village they started shooting in different directions to scare everybody away. As the people were running for dear life, the police and soldiers began to set the buildings on fire, nobody had the courage to stop and ask why they were doing what they were doing, because we believed that with the way they entered the village anybody who tried to question them would be killed instantly. They destroyed everything, from household property to cash crops, goats, fowls everything around especially those belonging to those who rear their goats and chickens inside their compounds. But all we know is that the police were trailing criminals the previous day, but both the criminals and the police did not stop in our village. If you want to see the police, I can lead you there, so you can understand what I am talking about. Where the police and the armed robbery suspects engaged in shooting is very far from our village. We knew there was a shoot-out because we saw the vehicles of the armed robbery suspects when they were passing, but we did not then except when we immediately saw the police vehicles also trailing them, with up to five patrol vans and it was after sometime that we started hearing gunshots and the whole village began to flee in confusion. The following day we heard that police vehicles were burnt and the criminals made away with some money.
