Owerri: 9 bodies recovered from Nworie River EMMA OGU, Owerri Nine decomposing bodies have been recovered from the Nworie River in Owerri, Imo State, by tractors engaged in clearing the river preparatory to its dredging; a project being executed by Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Governor Ikedi Ohakim’s administration. The unidentified bodies said to be undergoing autospy are suspected to be victims of ritual killing. Special adviser to the governor on Sanitation and Transport, Chief Willy Amadi, who disclosed this in an interactive session with journalists, said the bodies were not completely decomposed, even as he expressed the likelihood of more bodies being discovered. Amadi who doubles as vice-chairman of Environmental Transformation Committee, ENTRACO, sad the company to carry out the dredging exercise will arrive in the state soon to begin the project awarded at the cost of N7billion. He said: "What is going on now is not dredging. They are just clearing the weeds in the river. Who knows who the nine bodies are? If nine bodies can be discovered at this stage you can imagine what will be discovered when they dig deeper. People are being regularly declared missing. Who knows what has been going on for long in the River? " He said the dredging exercise was purely a Federal Government project through the NDDC and the only counterpart contribution of the state government was payment of compensation to land owners and provision of security. On the master plan and economic value of the project, he said three amusement parks will be built on the banks of the river alongside four modern bridges and houses. The dredging project, he said, will provide for water transport in all the local government areas the river crossed, saying it will have much economic impact on the state when the project is completed. Amadi said Ohakim deserved commendation and encouragement for attracting the project to the state. The dredging project has attracted criticism in some quarters since it was announced. Some critics see it as a white elephant project while some question its economic value. http://www.champion-newspapers.com/news/article_2.htm WE SHLD REMEMBER THE FAMOUS OTOKOTO IN IMO STATE & OKIJA SHRINE IN ANAMBRA STATE. |

Edo State to generate N2bn from corporate bodies Written by Michael Eboh Tuesday, 12 May 2009 Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has called on the people of the state to exercise patience and understanding with his administration, stating that he hopes to deliver on his campaign promises especially in the area of infrastructure and economic development. Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams OshiomholeSpeaking at a reception organised for him by Edo citizens resident in Lagos, Oshiomhole explained that the delay in the delivery of his campaign promises was as a result of the need to ensure proper planning and adequate research on targeted projects, such as road construction around the state capital and infrastructure development. He said, “We discovered that we cannot address all the problems and challenges in the state at once, hence we decided to tackle it on a gradual basis. This informed our adoption of a two-point agenda, focussing on education and infrastructure in the current financial year. We realised that if we decided to do everything at once, we would only be able to do little with the resources at our disposal and the impact will not be felt. We have called in consultants and contractors and they are presently undertaking proper assessment of the situation in the state and hope to come out with a plan for the road network in the state, especially the capital. This study will last for about three months and hopefully, then, we intend to commence the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads and other infrastructure in the state. So we call for patience and understanding from the people of the state, very soon, we will commence work and this will not be delayed or abandoned until they are completed, ” He lamented the high level of connivance between public servants and contractors to inflate government’s contracts, noting that this has helped in no small measure in worsening the plight of people in the state as in most cases, the projects are abandoned. He noted that the state is confronted with a lot of challenges, especially in the area of revenue generation, funds to meet up with its obligations and rot in the state’s public service. He bemoaned the failure of organisations and individuals in the state to pay the appropriate taxes to the government, adding that this informed its decision to reform the state’s tax law. He disclosed that with the new tax law, it hopes to generate N1.2 billion from companies in the state, N2 billion from Internally Generated Revenue and about N150 million from farmers using government land. He blamed the problem in the state’s civil service to failure of previous administrations to train the civil servants, helping them keep abreast of modern day realities, noting that it is hell-bent on re-orientating the state’s civil service. According to Oshiomhole, “Our major priority is re-orientating the public service. We discovered that public servants are more of public masters and public abusers. Majority of the public servants aid contractors to defraud the state by providing false information on the operations and execution of government’s contracts by the contractors. “ |

Ekiti violence: Soldiers, police take over Fayemi’s town By Akin Oyedele, Ado-Ekiti Published: Monday, 11 May 2009 Soldiers and policemen on Sunday took over Isan-Ekiti, the hometown of the governorship candidate of the Action Congress, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, following Saturday‘s burning of the palace of the monarch of the town, Oba Sunday Ajiboye. Soldiers in Ekiti Our correspondent learnt that more than 100 security men, backed by two Armoured Personnel Carriers, had been deployed in the community to avert a backlash. In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the monarch confirmed that the security agencies had risen to the occasion to avert possible backlash. Insisting that the attackers planned to kill him over his support for Fayemi to become the governor of the state, Oba Ajiboye said that he remained resolute in his faith in the AC candidate. Since the incident occurred, he said he was yet to hear a word of condolence from the state government, while he acknowledged that some traditional rulers had visited him to sympathise with him. He said, ”If God has destined him to be governor, he will be there. Burning my palace and my property will never discourage me from backing him. The situation is okay in the town but my subjects are feeling bad and there is no more crisis.” The traditional ruler had put the value of the property he lost to the inferno at N100m, including two cars, academic certificates, artifacts, and other expensive personal effects. The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State command, Mr. Chris Ola, also said that some suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack. He said that the command was also investigating the alleged reprisal attack on the house of the prime suspect named by the monarch as the ring leader of the attack on his house. The monarch had named a Peoples Democratic Party leader, said to be son of a former Secretary to the State Government and leader of a faction of the Oodua Peoples Congress as the mastermind. In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the CP said that words had reached him that the house of the PDP leader was attacked with objects suspected to be explosives. He said that the attack on the monarch‘s palace might have been triggered by his alleged silence when some Action Congress members ”went on the rampage” in the town after the April 25 rerun governorship election. The CP said, ”The house of some PDP members were attacked after the April 25 election when the AC people went on rampage. What happened on Saturday might be a reprisal attack. ”I hear that there was another attack today (Sunday) on the house of those that were suspected to be responsible for the burning of the palace. Some explosives might have been used. ”There was no election in Isan during the rerun, so, there was no basis for this attack and counter-attack. But, I was told that the AC attacked some people‘s house in Isan in the 2007 election. ”Well, I don‘t want to dwell on that because I was not here then. I don‘t want to link the matter. We are going to investigate all parties. Some arrests have been made, but I can‘t give the figure now.” Meanwhile, the AC has condemned the attack, which the party‘s spokesman, Mr. Yemi Adaramodu, described as a display of bestiality. An electronic mail by Adaramodu on Sunday said it was shameful that the leadership of Ekiti PDP could employ violence as a tool to force acceptance on the people after securing what he called ”Ayoka victory.” He said, ”The failed attempt on Fayemi‘s house in Isan-Ekiti showed that the PDP has made up its mind that Ekiti would be separated from peace as a condition for them to keep Ayoka‘s Greek gift. “We are at a loss over what a revered monarch like Onisan could have caused the PDP to warrant the wanton destruction meted on his palace, property and community.” However, the PDP blamed the failure of Fayemi and the monarch to intervene during past attack on its members for the arson. An electronic mail by the spokesman of Segun Oni Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, said that the two did not intervene when houses and properties belonging to PDP members were destroyed in 2007. He said, ”The Onisan and Fayemi ought to have raised the alarm they are raising now when 16 houses belonging to Isan indigenes were destroyed after the April 14, 2007 governorship election results were announced. “Sixteen houses belonging to people suspected to be PDP members were destroyed to protest the defeat of Fayemi in the April 14, 2007 election, but nothing was done by the Onisan and Fayemi.” Reacting, Fayemi said it was becoming clear that the elements within the PDP were those he called ”brigands and stark illiterates.” He said it was shocking that anybody could use the alleged arson attack on Isan community in 2007 as an excuse for attempting to burn down his house and the torching of the palace. Fayemi wondered when he or the monarch had become law enforcement agencies that should be held responsible for failing to take action when a crime was committed in the community. Fayemi said, ”Ekiti is the only mono-ethnic state in the country, outside Bayelsa. It is sad that we could resolve to go into this barbaric height to seek vengeance for purported offence committed in 2007. ”This is a sad development in the annals of Ekiti history. On my part, I have always said that I did not want to rule over dead body and over people whose property are destroyed. “I don‘t pray for a repeat of 1983 and I hope the Segun Oni‘s camp will also watch their action. We will win this struggle through the strength of character and commitment that we have shown our people.” Oni, in a separate statement by his spokesman, Mr. Moses Jolayemi, condemned the burning of the palace, describing the action as ”heartless and highly heretical.” The governor, who expressed shock and disbelief also promised to provide necessary support to the Police who he said were already on ground and on top of the situation. The statement read, ”The traditional institution is very sacred, sacrosanct and must be revered at all times, irrespective of our belief or political predilection.” http://www.punchng.com/Articl.aspx?theartic=Art2009051137428 |

Ekiti: How alleged Security Reports on Tinubu truncated Fayemi’s Guber Destiny Bola Tinubu Facts behind the intrigues of Mr. Kayode Fayemi’s loss in Tuesday’s Ekiti State governorship election have started unraveling. The iron will determination and desperate disposition of the people’s Democratic Party (PDP) controlled central government in Nigeria to secure victory at all costs was allegedly aimed at decisively stopping the growing political influence and power of Ex- Lagos governor, Mr. Ahmed Bola Tinubu. Pointblanknews.com can authoritatively reveal that PDP government did meddle in the elections in Ekiti State thereby putting the nail on the ambition of human right activist, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. Armor tanks were allegedly rolled into Ekiti State on the day of the election. In Oye Local Government where 18,000 voters were expected, only about 1,000 people eventually cast their ballots. Electorates were palpably scared and instead of showing up at the polling boots, they simply went to the farms and when they returned, the PDP had secured a tactical victory. The undercurrents behind Dr. Fayemi’s loss are now coming into the open. According to sources, who bargained for anonymity, Fayemi’s strong link with Tinubu and the huge pull of money, the later threw in the Ekiti race to prosecute the contest was a source of serious concern for the PDP government. One source told pointblanknews.com that the government tapped into a mountain-high intelligence report on the worrisome political clout of ex-governor Tinubu. First, he was said to have been the largest financial backer for the election of the present Ghanaian President, John Evans Atta Mills. A Nigerian Intelligence source has since confirmed this disclosure. Second, Tinubu popularly called the Asiwaju (Leader) was said to have bankrolled the election of Governor Rahman Mimiko of Ondo, Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo and that of Governor Kehinde Fasola of Lagos State. He was also alleged to have tried albeit unsuccessfully to install governors for Osun and Oyo States before the last backing for Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti State. The same intelligence report was said to have contained details of an estimated monthly receipt of two billion naira ($ 20 million) from Lagos State government, on alleged pretext of tax consulting. Apart from what sources claimed to be Federal Government’s awareness on on-going similar arrangements with Oshiomhole and Mimiko, there was also the confusion as what Tinubu’s agenda or future ambition might be. . He is also said to have interest in some questionable oil investments for which he is still answerable before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The Federal Government was said to have received initial representation from a so-called Ekiti concerned citizens, who reportedly told President Umar Musa Yar’Adua that they needed assistance to ensure that Ekitis are not sold cheaply to Tinubu. The concerned citizens were said to have appealed to the president to ensure that the Ekiti Parapo war which their ancestors fought nearly two centuries ago, to reject internal colonization from other stronger Yoruba cities to the West, was not rendered to naught by Tinubu’s forays. And Yar’Adua acted. Apart from the unclear agenda of Tinubu’s growing influence in West Africa and South West Nigeria, the government felt intimidated by his interest in the media. Some of the sources insisted that the Asiwaju had to be checked “so as not to have any person or group that would think they are greater than the country”. However, Tinubu’s political associates dismissed the existence of a so-called security report saying that the PDP “must be ashamed of rigging the election. They are mearly struggling to win the propaganda war over their shameless conduct”. Meanwhile, PDP sources in Ekiti are denying that the election was rigged on Tuesday. According to them, they were simply favored by the low turn-out in Oye and Ido-Osi local government. Action Congress claimed that voter’s intimidation was responsible for the low turn-out and vowed to contest the result at the Law Court. http://www.pointblanknews.com/os1710.html |
