Thugs Unleash Terror In Ekiti, As AC Leaders Arrive For Big Rally April 22, 2009 15:13, 659 views Three days to the re-run governorship election in Ekiti state, armed thugs, this morning, unleashed terror on members of the Action Congress (AC) going for a rally at Oye Ekiti. Reports reaching P.M.NEWS this morning revealed that there were shootings by armed thugs suspected to be members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as AC members moved enmasse for a rally at Oye Ekiti, the local government of its governorship candidate in the re-run election, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. P.M.NEWS gathered that the thugs blocked the road and prevented AC supporters from moving to the rally ground. Some AC members were assaulted while their vehicles were damaged. Some of the band boys of a popular fuji musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1), who was scheduled to play at the rally today, were allegedly arrested by the police as they tried to set up their musical instruments for the rally. Incidentally, KWAM1’s mother hails from Ilupeju Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of the state. Attempts by AC members to report the arrest to the state commissioner of police proved abortive, as his aides said he was out of town. AC leaders, including Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos state and his Edo state counterpart, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Chief Bisi Akande, AC National Chairman and other chieftains of the party are expected at the rally. The PDP has also scheduled tomorrow for its final rally to mobilise support for its candidate, Engineer Segun Oni. Expected to attend the rally in the state are president Umaru Yar’Adua, Vice President Jonathan Goodluck and other chieftains of the party. President Yar’Adua and other party leaders had visited the state on 3 April, to campaign for Oni. Meanwhile, the Action Congress governorship candidate in Ekiti state, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has assured the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members who defected to AC on Tuesday, in Ikole-Ekiti, that they would be treated fairly in their new party. Mr. John Filani led at least 65 of the PDP members who defected to the AC. He spoke at a rally in the town, which marked the last leg of his campaign for this weekend’s election in 63 wards of the state. He urged voters not to entertain fear to cast their votes, saying adequate security would be provided for a hitch-free exercise. Fayemi said voter’s card holders would be allowed to vote irrespective of the anomalies that might have been observed on the voter’s list displayed by INEC ahead of the re-run. At Ijesa-Isu-Ekiti, Fayemi assured on his commitment to the provision of sound healthcare delivery system if voted into power, saying he would ensure that Ekiti residents are in good health at all times. He spoke as residents were waiting to be attended to by his medical crew in his free health project for the people. At a rally attended by thousands of party supporters, Fayemi assured the people that he would lead a government that is determined to raise their standards of living if voted into power. As at the time of filing in this report, P.M.NEWS gathered that four women and nine men have been macheted at Ifaki. http://thepmnews.com/2009/04/22/thug-unleash-terror-in-ekiti-as-ac-leaders-arrive-for-big-rally |

Oyo Police rescue 3-yr-old boy from kidnappers Written by Ola Ajayi Thursday, 23 April 2009 IBADAN — THE Oyo State Police Command has rescued a three-year old boy, Moses Bassir, from the hands of a three-man gang of kidnappers who demanded a ransom of N20 million from his mother. After kidnapping the boy who was fast asleep in his bed, the suspects took him to Lokoja in Kogi State where they called his mother on phone and demanded the ransom. While parading the suspects at the headquarters of the Command yesterday, the state’s new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Baba Bolanta, said the hoodlums stormed the residence of their victim at 10pm on March 29, robbed her of $138 and her Mercedes Benz 230. He explained that after many fruitless efforts at trapping down the suspects, the efforts of the police paid off when the policemen collaborated with the State Security Services (SSS) and other security experts. According to him, one of the suspects, Funsho Otuyale, procured an identity card as Abu Martins and a cement dealer in Obajana. Sequel to the part payment of the ransom, the Oyo command contacted the Kogi State Police Command to flood all the branches of the bank the money was paid into with policemen, with a view to arresting whoever may come to withdraw money from the account. Convinced that his shady deal had paid off and the ransom paid through his Western Union Transfer, on April 16, the suspects went to a commercial bank in Lokoja for the withdrawal of the ransom. Having got the hint of the arrest of his accomplice, one Chidi who was in the custody of the kidnapped boy abandoned him on a street at Ajaokuta. Paraded with the suspects were vigilante men and daredevil robbers who had been terrorising the residents of the city. Items recovered from the suspects include locally made rifles, live cartridges and other dangerous weapons. http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/34238/42/ |

Ahamafule said one of the members of the six-man gang, who abducted him, invited him from the Church last Saturday on the claim that he is an Inspector. NDLEA Arrests Post-Graduate Student, Trader With Cocaine April 21, 2009 15:25, 244 views By Simon Ateba Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a masters degree student of Business Management at the University of Wales, United Kingdom and a tyre merchant for testing positive for drug ingestion, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos. The student, Emeka Udensi Uche, 43 and the tyre merchant, Ogbuchi Uduma Okoro, 39, confessed to have ingested 70 wraps each of substances that tested positive to cocaine. The suspects, who were caught during the screening of KLM passengers on 17 and 18 April, 2009, are still excreting the wraps of drugs they swallowed. The NDLEA chairman, Ahmadu Giade, has described the arrest of the student as a “manifestation of character deficiency.” Emeka Udensi claimed to have studied Philosophy in his first degree at the University of Calabar, where he graduated in 2004. “It is a matter of looking here and there and no help is forthcoming. I ran out of money to finance my education and I find it difficult to rob or kill, that was how I got involved in drug trafficking. Believe me, this is my first time. I lost my mother six years ago and my aunt who has been assisting me died in January.” Emeka told NDLEA operatives. He hails from Bende Local Government Area of Abia state. He is married and has two children and was to be paid the sum of 3,000 pounds. Ogbuchi Uduma Okoro was arrested at about 2059 hours on 18 April, 2009. The tyre merchant, residing in Lome, Togo, with his wife and two children, blamed his involvement on indebtedness due to poor business. According to him; “if I had succeeded, I would have bought tyres with the 3,000 Euros they promised to pay me. I am indebted to the tune of 4 million CFA. But in an attempt to reduce my burden, I have doubled it,” Ogbuchi lamented. He hails from Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia state. According to the agency, the suspects will be charged to court soon. They might spend 15 years or be given light sentences as it is common with Nigerian courts. At least 197 convicted drug traffickers were illegally released between 2005 and 2006. Some were missing while some were simply aided by lawyers or prison wardens to evade justice http://thepmnews.com/2009/04/21/ndlea-arrests-post-graduate-student-trader-with-cocaine |

One commercial bus driver, Mr Ifeanyi whose bus was also attacked near Oraukwu junction said two men and a woman were shot dead in his bus by the armed robbers. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Fidelis Agbo (CSP) confirmed the incident. According to Mr Agbo three police officers, one soldier and four commuters were feared dead. He said that the police have spread their dragnet to apprehend the dare-devils as none of the armed robbers was killed during the gun battle. Meanwhile, two suspected armed robbers were killed and two others seriously wounded in a shoot out with the police along Ogoja Road Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital on Monday bringing to 11 killed in two separate attacks within one week in the state. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Chris Anyanwu said the hoodlums operating with two motorcycles marked QB 780 ZLL and WF 189 ENU had trailed their victim, one Mr. Simon Iseh from a bank to his petrol station and robbed him of the sum of over N1.2 million at gun point. He said that the hoodlums, after snatching the money were intercepted at Nwokpo junction along Ogoja road while trying to escape with their loot. He stated that items recovered from the bandits include two locally made pistols, four GSM handset, and some objects suspected to be charms. Anyanwu gave the names of the suspected armed gang as Ogbonna Sunday from Agbaja Umuhu in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi State and Orji Calistus from Amaorji Nenwe in Agwu local government area of Enugu State while the two that died at the spot were identified as Jude and Ernest. The robbery victim, Hon Simon Iseh, pioneer Minority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, said that he left his house early in the morning to the bank to make some withdrawals but was delayed for some time at the bank. “I came out of the bank and never suspected anything. I entered my car and drove off not knowing I was being followed.” “On getting down at the petrol station four boys jumped down from two motorcycles,’ at gun point they asked me to hand over my car keys which I immediately did. Having collected my car keys, they also commanded me to hand over the money I withdrew from the bank. I realized that if I had refused to hand over the money they would possibly shoot me, so I handed over the money to them and immediately, they drove away in the opposite direction heading towards rice mill.” He said that it was his salesgirls who, perhaps, observed what happened that raised alarm. “Fortunately for me, the Scorpion team of the Ebonyi State police command were driving towards the direction the hoodlum went and we had to alert them of the robbery attack. On sighting the police patrol van they opened fire and the police retaliated leading to the killing of two of the robbers while two others received gun shot wounds.” The former House of Assembly member said that of the over N1.2 million snatched from him only N795,000 was recovered while the balanced could not be traced as at press time ASP Anyanwu attributed the recent successes of the state police command to the determination of the force to curb crime in the state, adding that the command would continue to ensure that the state is safe for habitation. War over witches •As pastors fight over demons From JOE EFFIOING, Uyo Tuesday, April 21, 2009 Helen Ukpabio, tele-evangelist, church founder, film actor and movie producer, is one clergywoman who can smoke out one witch in a crowd of millions of saints. Or so it seems. Nearly all her films, which however are anchored on morality, has some elements of futile display of witchcraft powers which eventually get subdued by the power of the Holy Spirit. Thus, when she literally came to paint Uyo red (her members actually marched in the streets wearing reddish T-Shirts) about three weeks ago, on a campaign which theme was “Coven on Naked Wire”, then it was obvious that something witching was in the air. And those who expected a bountiful harvest of witches advised in the crusade posters to come out for free deliverance, were not disappointed as it was reported that more than 500 people, mostly children voluntary went out to label themselves witches or wizard in order to get the awoof deliverance. But that is where the story began to get K-leg according to Apostle John Okoriko, the founder and president of Solid Rock Kingdom Church, whose church along Ikot Ekpene Road Uyo is only about 300 metres from Helen Ukpabio’s Liberty Gospel Church situated in the same axis. Okoriko told The Sun a few days after the “Coven on Naked Wire” crusade that the claim of delivering 500 witches and wizards was nothing but a charade since there were no such number of witches in Uyo, as such the claim was fraudulent and ungodly especially when Ukpabio was reported to have instructed those delivered to be attending the various branches of her church for eight months for them to be monitored. “It is embarrassing in 21st century where every nation is going scientific and to the space that we are still talking about witchcraft. It is time we faced reality and not absurdity. I strongly disagree with the notion that Akwa Ibom state has been taken over by witches.” He said if at all there were witches and wizards in Uyo, they were not up to 10, not to talk of 500 who purportedly did the confession in a single church programme. “I challenge all prophets and apostles to open contest to prove if there is more than one witch in Akwa Ibom. In the Bible we hear of the Witch of Endor; which means there is always one witch at a time in a town; not 500. “And how can you tell 500 people who voluntarily confessed witchcraft to be attending your church for good or bad eight months for them to be completely delivered. Witchcraft is no spirit; it is a think of the flesh like drunkenness, fornication or stealing so it doesn’t call for spiritual deliverance,” he reasoned. Okoriko stressed that church leaders who are benefiting from the alleged witches were manipulating people to conference, adding that such assumed witches are always the poor. This thing is dragging our state backward; people have been brainwashed to think negatively. If the suffer a slight misfortune in their businesses instead of looking for practical solution, the pastors will tell them that they are attacked by witches and the person will become a slave to the pastors. It is sad. “If this state has been taken over by witchcraft, why can’t we use witchcraft to achieve good things; at least win international football matches? All we need to do is put eleven bewitched boys on the pitch and win the world cup. These so-called men of God are hireling or spiritual mercenaries,” he declared. If Akwa Iboºm has only one witch or wizard, so who is the witch of Uyo? And the 500 that paraded themselves as witches? Okoriko says: “They are fake witches.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2009/apr/21/national-21-04-2009-19.htm |
Cross River Loses Status as Oil State …Sues RMAFC, Boundary Commission By Davidson Iriekpen, 04.21.2009 The Cross River State government has dragged the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) before a Federal High Court in Abuja for ceding 76 of its oil wells to Akwa Ibom State and thereby depriving it of 13 per cent derivation from the Federation Account. In the suit which has the National Boundary Commi-ssion (NBC), Accountant-General of the Federation, Attorney-General of the Federation and Attorney-General of Akwa Ibom State as other defendants, the plaintiff is saying that unless the defendants were restrained by the court, the defendants would continue to deprive it of federal allocations to its prejudice. It stated that by a letter dated March 22, 2009, the RMAFC had directed the 3rd defendant (Accountant-General of the Federation), not to include the state in the disbursement of the $1.5 billion 13 per cent derivation fund accruing to the oil-producing states, of which the state belongs. In the suit, which THISDAY got wind of last night, the plaintiff argued that its 2009 budget was based partly on expected revenue from the 76 oil wells, adding that Federal Government's decision to hand over Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon had resulted in refugees flooding into the state which it has to provide for at a huge cost. It also stated that apart from the fact that if the RMAFC’s directives are implemented, the damages accruing to it could not be compensated, it also stated that the loss of revenue from Derivation Fund will mean that the state would find it hard to pay salaries to its workers and virtually stop all developmental programmes. It disclosed that the balance of convenience was in its favour to warrant the granting of the application. Part of the suit filed by Paul Erokoro (SAN), read: “By the said letter, the 76 oil wells lying within the 200 metre water depth Isobath contiguous to Cross River State were arbitrarily allotted to Akwa State, without recourse to due process. The 3rd Defendant is about to implement the directive of the 1st Defendant as contained in the letter of 12th March, 2008, which will deprive the Plaintiff of its entitlement. “If this Honourable Court does not stop the implementation of the directives of the 1st Defendant, it would bring untold and irreparable hardship on the Plaintiff. If the Defendants are not immediately prevented by an order of this Honourable Court from disbursing the $1.5 billion, the disbursed money cannot be recovered as it would have been dissipated by Akwa Ibom State to whom it would have been disbursed.” The plaintiff revealed that to its knowledge, there was no boundary dispute between it and Akwa Ibom State other than the one that had been settled to the satisfaction of both states, since October 2006. It further buttressed its argument with a Certified True Copy of a letter marked Exhibit "A" written by the Akwa Ibom State Governor to the President and dated January 31, 2005, stating that the boundary between the two states had been satisfactorily settled by the 2nd Defendant (NBC). It stated that the NBC, by a letter dated 4th January 4, 2005, with reference No. NBC/SEC.32/1/485, had delineated the Cross River/Akwa Ibom maritime boundary in paragraph 4 thereof thus: "(a) The terminal point of Akwa Ibom State/Cross River interstate boundary in Cross River estuary has co-ordinates 43733N and 82439E. (b) The maritime boundary between Akwa Ibom and Cross River should be a line drawn trunk point referred to in (i) above southwards until it intersects with Nigeria-Equatorial Guinea international maritime boundary. (c)Items 4(a) and 4(b) have further implications as follows: (i) Cross River has 3509N and 81253E as co-ordinates of the terminal point on the Nigerian-Equatorial Guinea maritime boundary. (ii) Cross River state will gain 76 number oil wells. This implies Akwa Ibom will lose the same number of oil wells." The plaintiff disclosed that on October 27, 2006, at a meeting presided over by the President of Nigeria, the two states accepted the above determination and agreed that it defined their estuarine and maritime boundary. It supported its argument with a letter which it marked as Exhibit "B", written by the President affirming the position. It further averred that in spite of all these, the RMAFC “strangely” wrote to the President suggesting that the 76 oil wells attributed to it be given to Akwa Ibom State as it had ceased to be a littoral state since the country had ceded the Bakassi Peninsula to the Republic of Cameroon. "Cross River State was neither represented at the retreat nor given the opportunity to defend its right to be paid 13% derivation based on the said 76 oil wells under the prevailing boundary delineation with Akwa Ibom state and the 1st Defendant raised the issue of a boundary dispute between Cross River and Akwa Ibom states suo motu and purported to resolve same against Cross River state without hearing the Plaintiff,” it said. Supporting its argument with a letter by the NBC to the President dated January 4, 2005 as Exhibit "C", the state further argued that contrary to the assertions in the Report of the Retreat, as at 2005, when it (NBC) settled the boundary between Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, Bakassi had already been deemed a part of the Republic of Cameroon, the judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ceding the territory to Cameroon had been delivered in 2002, adding that all that was outstanding was merely the handover of the territory, which did not change the indices of boundary delineation. "(i) Upon becoming aware of the Report of the Kano retreat, the Governor of Cross River state protested to the President of Nigeria to ensure that the established maritime boundary between Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, which gives Cross River state the 76 oil wells in her 200 metre water depth Isobath be maintained. A Certified True Copy of the Cross River state Government's letter dated 6th October 2008 is hereto attached as Exhibit ‘D’. “(j) The President, in a letter dated 20th November 2008, with reference No. SH/PSP/25/9/A/14, forwarded to the 2nd Defendant the complaint from Cross River state protesting the 1st Defendant's attempt to reopen the boundary issue through the adoption of the strict technical option. (k) Pursuant to the President's letter, the 1st Defendant set up a special technical committee comprising representatives of the 2nd Defendant, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police and the Office of the President to review the findings and conclusions of the Kano Retreat. "(l) After due deliberations and wide consultations, the committee recommended as follows: (i) The Historical Option in determining revenue allocation to the states of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states was adopted by the Federal Government in 2005. This option has continued to apply to the satisfaction and agreement of the two states and therefore should continue. "(ii) The standard practice of using equidistance line as a starting point and then consider any special or relevant circumstances and adjust the line if necessary", should be applied in the case of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states if there is need for a new boundary adjustment. The Akwa Ibom state's prayer was the same "historic title", option adopted in the settlement of her boundary with Cross River state should be used in the settlement of her boundary with Rivers state rather than the political solution. This clearly indicates that Akwa Ibom state is not objecting to the use of historical title option in the settlement of her border with Cross River state, therefore the status quo should be maintained. Reference to the Akwa Ibom state position paper which is annexure 2F. "The committee is of the considered opinion that since there is a breach of the process of boundary adjustment between Akwa Ibom and Cross River states and moreover, no dispute has arisen officially between them since 2005 exercise and the President has not reversed the status quo, that the status quo ante between them should be allowed to prevail. Therefore, the case of Cross River state and Akwa Ibom state boundary should be treated in isolation from others now pending. (v) That because of the security implication and the volatility of the area, vis-a-vis the ceding of Bakassi Peninsula, the present 13% derivation allocation to Cross River State be sustained as they are an oil-producing state. (vi) The Federal Government should have the political will of forcing the oil companies to end gas flaring due to its devastating effect on the environment and loss or revenue,” it stated. It is seeking an order restraining the defendants from enforcing or acting upon any other maritime or estuarine boundary alleged to exist between the two states, except that determined by the NBC in 2005 and accepted by the parties, and which had been in use for revenue sharing purposes for several years, pending the determination of the substantive suit. http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=141393 |
