This is Corps Marshal Osita Chidoka (Ikeobosi), immediate past Federal Road Safety boss and former Aviation Minister under the immediate past administration riding in lead to the final resting abode of his late principal, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, today in Ohafia.

Through Chief Osita Chidoka's series on his Facebook page, I got to know how principled, strong willed and highly cerebral Chief Ojo was. His many uncelebrated achievements were laid bare by his then subject, Osita Chidoka.

Ikeobosi never stopped drumming it to the ears of all how Mekaria inspired and mentored him to who he is today. In fact, to keep Mekaria's legacy alive, he recently instituted a mentorship program solely for Human Capital Development.

Ikeobosi, as you strive higher and greater, may God surround you with loyal subjects, friends and partners, just as you humbly dedicated yourself while in service.

Abians and indeed Nigerians have lost a great human asset in the person of the deceased elder statesman. May his soul continue to rest in peace'.

Culture, tourism key to addressing challenges of lean resources,
unemployment - Minister

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said culture and tourism are key to addressing the challenges posed by lean
resources and unemployment in the country

''In this period of tough economic challenges, caused by the steep
fall in global oil prices, Nigeria has no choice but to look for other
viable means of earning needed resources for developmental purposes
and to generate employment for its teeming youths,'' the Minister said
at the Third Festival Colloquium of Lagos at 50 on Saturday.

''In this search for a new economic paradigm, tourism, arts and
culture have been identified as the most viable sector of the economy
to explore. Culture drives tourism, and both are good for creating
jobs, reducing crime and diversifying the economy, three of the
cardinal programs of the Buhari Administration,'' he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said the potentials of the sector in boosting the
country's economy had been attested to by many international agencies,
including the British Council whose 2013 report of the Lagos Pilot
Study on the ‘Mapping of Nigerian Creative Industries revealed that
the creative businesses surveyed in
the mapping exercise contributed N2,547,300,490.26 during the
reference period, with 61% of the total Gross Value Added (GVA)
derived from the film industry alone. Fashion and music contributed
26% and 13% respectively.

He also said that with Nigeria being richly endowed with
globally-recognized sites and monuments, it is imperative for the
country to convert its tourist sites to tourist attraction and bring
the culture and tourism sector to the mainstream of the economy.

The Minister said the government is working with the World Tourism
Organization, the UN agency charged with the promotion of responsible,
sustainable and universally-accessible tourism, to turn around the
fortunes of the sector.

''Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the foundation has been laid and
the ground work done. It is time for all States of the Federation to
pick up the gauntlet and explore the vast tourism potentials available
to us and by so doing, improve our economy and provide employment,''
he said.

The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of the dairy sector in Nigeria.

Signing the MoU with one of the world’s largest dairy companies – Arla Foods in Abuja, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development – Chief Audu Ogbeh stated that the Nigerian Government in line with its plan on food security, welcomes companies and initiatives that would help in the development of the agricultural sector.

According to the Minister, “the population of the country is growing so fast with an increasing population of children malnourished. With the Federal Government’s school feeding programme, we dream of a day, where every Nigerian child has a pack of milk per day to improve their health. We are creating an enabling environment in the cattle breeding programme, where a poor widow in the village can own four or five cows to milk and have the facility to preserve them for local consumption. If a family has three or four cows, this can keep poverty away from them because rural poverty is a serious matter”.

Chief Ogbeh assured that Nigeria has a huge market with endless opportunities, adding: “We look forward to seeing a transmission of your knowledge to our farmers. Let this be a synergy and not just a business. The cows are not properly taken care of so the quality and quantity of milk, beef they produce is low and we want this to change”.

Speaking earlier, the Senior Vice President and Head of Arla Foods for Sub-Saharan African – Mr Steen Hadsbjerg explained that Nigeria was chosen due to its vast potentials.

“We are here to build a sustainable dairy industry in Nigeria Arla is more than 130 years old and we have been in Nigeria for more than 30 years operating under the name of Dano, one of our global brand. By signing this MoU, we are committed to the proper development of the dairy sector and the technical know-how to farmers in Nigeria.

“We will assist to develop the supply chain; we will work to ensure quality delivery of milk produced here to meet international standards. We will work with international NGOs and use our connections in the EU to support the Nigerian government in this project. We will talk and work with the farmers directly based on local milk and we are aiming to train about 200 farmers in the first year” he added.

TROOPS REPEL BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS ATTACK ON KANGARWA

Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE at harbour in Kangarwa yesterday successfully repelled suspected remnants of Boko Haram terrorists attack.

The attack was launched by the suspected terrorists at about 5:30pm on Sunday 14th August 2016.

The alert troops rose to the occasion and dealt a decisive blow on the insurgents, by killing 16 of them and recovering arms and ammunitions from them.

Weapons recovered from the insurgents include 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade 7 tube, 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade bomb, 11 AK-47 Rifle, a 60mm Mortar tube, a dozen of 60mm Mortar bombs, a 36 Hand Grenade, 5 AK-47 rifle magazines, 1 Gionee Handset and 1 Bandolier.

Unfortunately, an officer and 11 soldiers were wounded in action during the encounter. We are glad to state they have all been treated at the unit’s medical facility and are all in stable condition.

The troops have continued to intensify vigilance and high level of alertness through patrols and reconnaissance.

It is in line with that the troops went on fighting fighting patrol to Dogon Chikun this morning, recovered one vehicle and rescued 5 people from the Boko Haram terrorists.

'This was a history making day in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.... A young man graduated from high school and was carry home in what we term in Liberia as "PUSH PUSH". A "push push" is a locally made wheel barrow made of wood and a car tire.. I stand to be corrected this is the first of it kind in the Republic of Liberia for such thing to happened'.

His Excellency, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State at the Zonal Executive Committee meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South East Zone which took place in Enugu. Also in attendance were the Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Engr. David Umahi, the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Ike Ekweremadu,Sent. Ben Obi, member of the Party's Board of Trustees, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, other members of the National Assembly from the zone, former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, among others. The Chairmanship Aspirant of the Party in the forthcoming National Convention, Chief Olabode Ibiyinka George was also present at the meeting apparently to address the South-East delegates.


At the meeting,PDP South East passed a vote of confidence for the Governors of the zone elected on the platform of the oarty for regular payment of workers' salaries and provision of infrastructural development in their various states in spite of the current economic crunch in the country. They also resolved to move to Port-Harcourt for the Party's National Convention with one voice, adding that every state of the zone is represented in the zoning of offices allocated to the region.

At least 5 students from St. Mary’s Nyamagwa Girls school,Kenya were feared dead after their school bus was involved in a fatal accident. The driver and a teacher have also been confirmed dead.

According to reports, the students were returning from a trip to celebrate the purchase of the new bus when the accident occurred.

The school bus rolled at Nyambunde along the Kisii-Kilgoris road.  Several others have been injured and rushed to Kisii Level 6 Hospital.
