Ebonyi: All you do is demand money, sex from teachers – Umahi blasts education inspectors

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has lamented the rate at which education inspectors demand money and sex from teachers in the state, instead of carrying out their primary assignment of monitoring teachers.

The governor is accusing primary and secondary school education inspectors and secretaries in the state of demanding money and sex for favours from teachers in the state, an act he said has led to a total collapse of the education.

The Governor made this allegation in Abakaliki over the weekend during a meeting with stakeholders in the education sector in the state, lamenting that despite government’s efforts to reform the sector in line with international best practices, the education inspectors and secretaries who are supposed to monitor the teachers have now become sex merchants.

He said, “All you do is demand money and sex from teachers. The teachers have also become merchants selling clothes and other goods instead of teaching the students.

“This has led to a total collapse of the education system in the state and this is the reason why you have cultism on the increase in schools because the teachers are not doing their work properly and you are not inspecting them to make sure they do their job.”

Umahi, however, noted that the sector would be restructured with immediate effect, beginning with the re-posting of all education secretaries and inspectors.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday October 17, 2016, arraigned one Joseph Ovbokhan Odubu and his company, Even Handed Services Limited before Justice P. I. Ajoku of the Federal High Court, sitting in Benin, Edo State on a 3-count charge bordering on forgery, uttering and obtaining money by false presence to the tune of Nine Million Three Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira (N9, 360,000.00).

Joseph, a brother to the deputy governor Edo State, Pius  Odubu,  who is also the Managing Director of Even Handed Services Limited  allegedly used forged documents to obtain a loan facility of Nine Million Three hundred and sixty thousand naira (N9,360,000.00) on September 5, 2014 from First Bank Plc to facilitate the supply of chairs and desks in Edo State.

One of the count reads: “that you Odubu Joseph Ovbokhan and Even Handed Services Limited  on or about the 9th day of September, 2014 in Benin within the Jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, with intent to  defraud obtained the sum of (N9,360,000.00) Nine Million Three Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira in credit from First Bank of Nigeria Limited, by deceitfully presenting a letter of domiciliation which you used as a farce and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable by Section 1(3) of the same law.

Another count reads: “that you Odubu Joseph Ovbokhan and Even Handed Services Limited  on or about the 12th day of May, 2015 in Benin within the Jurisdiction of this Honorable Court, with intent to  defraud and to facilitate fraud, forged a document captioned ‘REQUEST FOR CONFIRMATION OF JOB COMPLETION TO OUR BANKERS (FIRST BANK, BENIN MISSION ROAD, BRANCH’ purporting that the said document was received by Edo State Oil and Gas Producing-Areas Development Commission, with intent that it may be acted upon as genuine, a pretext which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(2)(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation of Nigeria) Act, 2007 and punishable under Section 1(2) of the same Act.”
 
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him.

In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, C. A. Okoli asked the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial and that the accused person be remanded in prison custody. However, counsel to the defendant, Osama Idehen made an oral application for bail which was refused by the court as she was asked to file a formal application.

Justice Ajoku adjourned the case to November 22, 2016 for trial and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.

GOVERNOR UDOM EMMANUEL PRESENTS LANDCRUISER SUV TO NTISONG IBIBIO 3, OBONG ESSIEN EKIDEM

The Ntisong Ibibio 3, Obong Essien Ekidem has been presented with a key of a Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep by Akwa Ibom State Governor Mr Udom Emmanuel.

The Governor said the gesture was in fulfilment of a promise he made to the Patriarch during his 70th Birthday.

Governor Emmanuel noted that the official vehicle of the Ibibio monarch had suffered wear and tear having served the Patriarch for a long period of time .

He said the presentation was as a result of the high regard he has for the Traditional institution in the state and prayed that the Royal father cruises on the vehicle without hitch.

Receiving the key of the vehicle, the Ntisong Ibibio expressed appreciation to the Governor for the gesture and wished him a successful tenure of office.

Governor Samuel Ortom yesterday responded to statements credited to former Governor of the state, Gabriel Suswam who had earlier accused the present administration of fueling insecurity and the arrest of his loyalists among other accusations. Below is Governor Ortom's response:

"The previous administration armed youths for the 2015 elections. Since we came in, what we have been doing is to try to change these youths by convincing them to bring those weapons which they did during the carrot approach of our amnesty programme. I hope that the former governor sees what is happening here - the number of weapons that have been received.

When we say that over 600 of those weapons were received from the youths, some people were doubting but today, the media are here and can see things for themselves. Let the former governor come and see. He created insecurity but I am here to restore security by the grace of God. The Bible says the thief cometh not but to steal and destroy; but the son of God cometh to give life.

I have come to give life to Benue people not to kill, not to steal or to destroy. I challenge him; we did not use violence in winning the election last year so we will not be distracted. But it is said that silence is consent, so we are bound to reply him when he talks about these things.

All the challenges that are here today were anchored by him. He is the first governor of the state ever to be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction on fraud charges. So he should go and face his fraud charges instead of talking about his men being arrested everyday. Everyone arrested by security agencies is for one case or the other and the records are there - those who are in prison, those who are in detention. He can verify with security agencies.

No one under my watch as Governor of Benue State has ever been arrested arbitrarily. How can we allow criminals to be terrorizing the people, to be killing people, to be kidnapping people, to be molesting people?

As I have said before, I will not surrender Benue to criminals."

The rule of law is being respected by those in authority for the first time in our recent history. For instance, Col Sambo Dasuki is being held LAWFULLY.

Attacks and Petitions based on falsehood can continue to fly around. It's corruption fighting back so it makes no difference because there's a focus. CHANGE MUST HAPPEN.

More Judges, evidently corrupt ones, will be pulled in by the DSS, EFCC, Police, Customs, NDLEA, and Ordinary Nigerians who can obtain a warrant. That's according to The NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCIES ACT Section 2 Sub (3). It also covers the activities of the DSS.

️DSS is also, covered by ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT, ACJA 2015, signed into law by Ex-president Jonathan exactly 2weeks before the handover to President Buhari.

Some confused Nigerians have made a singsong out of "Buhari must restructure Nigeria or we die". They have no understanding that it's the role of the Sleeping beauty, the National Assembly. Arresting judges suspected of corruption is all part of that restructuring within the purview of the executive.

It's nauseating that those calling for restructuring cannot recognise restructuring in the arrest of the Judges as they are up in arms, in condemnation of the cleansing of the judiciary.

But We now have a leader, a President, who has the political will and the good moral standing to lead Nigerians in an onslaught against institutionalised corruption and decay.

Nigerians must speak us in support of our nation as we battle to recover our nation from the corrupt cabal that had held our nation ransom.

The President of the French Republic, François Hollande, meets Dangote, other top 10 world entrepreneurs to boost trade with France.

The meeting became necessary as a result of significant drop in the trade relationship between Africa continent and France. While foreign investments into the African continent, went from 15 billion in the year 2000 to 118 billion in 2014. trade between France and Africa went down from 10.1 per cent in 2000 to 5.9 per cent in 2015.

In other to regain an economic dynamic with the continent, Hollande gathered the big industrialist representatives for a private meeting. Amongst them is Aliko Dangote the richest man in Africa.
This meeting, coming on the edge of the France-Africa summit in January 2017, in Bamako the capital of Mali, the French Head of State Francois Hollande chose to make of Aliko Dangote and this group of entrepreneurs a real strength of proposal for the construction of a new economic partnership between Europe and Africa.

Press Release by Department of State Services

The Department of State Services (DSS) in the past few days, has embarked on series of special sting operations involving some Judges of the Supreme, Appeal and High Courts. These operations were based on allegations of corruptions and other acts of professional misconduct by a few of the suspected Judges. The Service action is in line with its core mandate, as we have been monitoring the expensive and luxurious lifestyle of some of the Judges as well as complaints from the concerned public over judgment obtained fraudulently and on the basis amounts of money paid.

The judges involved were invited, upon which due diligence was exhibited and their premises searched. The searches have uncovered huge raw cash of various denominations, local and foreign currencies, with real estate worth several millions of Naira and documents affirming unholy acts by these Judges. Meanwhile, some of them have made useful statements while a few have declined even with the glaring evidences that were found against them in terms of material cash, documents and property recovered pointing to their compromise.

In one of the States where the Service operations were conducted, credible intelligence revealed that the Judge had Two Million United States Dollars ($2,000,000 USD) stashed in his house. When he was approached for due search to be conducted, he in concert with the State Governor, mobilized thugs against the Service team. The team restrained itself in the face of unbridled provocative activities by those brought in by the Governor. Unfortunately, the Judge and Governor also engaged the tacit support of a sister security agency.

The Service surveillance team noticed that upon frustrating the operation, the Judge with the active support of the Governor craftily moved the money to an unknown location which the Service is currently making effort to unravel.

Meanwhile, large amount including foreign/local currencies have been recovered. Summaries of these include:
SUMMARY OF RECOVERED MONEY
1. NAIRA - N93,558,000.00
2. DOLLARS - $530,087
3. POUNDS - £25,970
4. EURO - €5,680

Other foreign currencies were also recovered. This were recovered from just three (3) of the judges.

These in addition to other banking documents, including real estate documents have been recovered. Meanwhile preparations are ongoing to arraign them in a competent court of jurisdiction in line with the laws of the nation.

The Service would want to clearly state that it has never invited Justice Walter NKANU ONNOGHEN for investigation, neither is he being investigated by this Service. In addition the Service would like to put it on record, that it has tremendous respect for the Judiciary and would not do anything to undermine it or its activities. The Service will also join hands with this noble institution in its fight to rid it of few corrupt Judges whose actions is undermining not only the Judiciary but the common bond of our national life.

Ladies and gentlemen, this current operation will be sustained and followed till sanity and sanctity is restored to the esteemed third arm of government and public confidence is regained.

Members of the public are also encouraged to avail the Service of any information which could assist in this drive to rid our nation of corrupt practices and tendencies.

TROOPS AVERTS ANOTHER SUICIDE BOMBING IN GWOZA

Today, Thursday 6th October 2016, at  about 12.25pm,  3 female suicide bombers attempted to attack a military location at Gwoza, Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State.

The suicide bombers who came  through Pulka axis were sighted by members of vigilante from a distance and alerted the troops about the impending catastrophe. The very observant vigilante also noted that the women looked suspicious; walking awkwardly with bulging hijab and distinct from other female farmers.

When the suicide bombers noticed that they were being observed, they hurriedly  ran towards troops aiming to detonate it on them. The troops neutralized 2 of the female suicide bombers, while the other ran back into the bush but was pursued. Unfortunately, a soldier sustained injuries due to the impact of the explosion. The wounded soldier  is currently receiving treatment at a military medical centre and he is in stable condition.
