Sokoto state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, on Wednesday dedicated his victory at the election petitions tribunal to the Almighty God and the people of the state. He, also, extended an olive branch to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the 2019 governorship polls. The governor, who was addressing the mammoth crowd of supporters at the Government House, Sokoto, today said they have every cause to celebrate this victory.

“We won in the first round of the election before it was declared inconclusive and the rerun was conducted and we won again. “Then APC and its candidate decided to approach tribunal and we won at the tribunal again. We have every cause to celebrate this victory and to dedicate it to Almighty God and the people of Sokoto state,” he said. The governor also called on the APC’s candidate, Ahmed Aliyu and members of the party to join hands with him to move the state forward.

“I hereby extend the hand of fellowship and an olive branch for them to work with us for the good people of Sokoto together because we have no other state but Sokoto state ” he stated. Speaking earlier, the former Governor of the state, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, called on the leader of the opposition APC in the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko to forget their differences and support Tambuwal to succeed.

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday confirmed that it’s operatives in a combined operation, on 30th September, 2019, arrested Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT). A statement from DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya said the arrest which was effected at the Pennsylvania Avenue Hotel, Utako, Abuja followed a request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to the Service to assist in apprehending the suspect. He said Maina was arrested in company of his 20-year old son, Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, who unsuccessfully tried to resist the arrest.

He said “the lad even pulled a pistol against the security agents involved in the operation.” “He was, however, disarmed and arrested. He is a final year student at the Canadian University of Dubai where he is studying Telecoms Engineering,” He said the items recovered from the suspects include a pistol with live ammunition, a bullet proof Range Rover SUV, a BMW Saloon car, foreign currencies, a phantom 7 drone and sensitive documents. He said the suspects and the recovered items will be handed over to the EFCC for further investigations and appropriate necessary actions.

Afunanya said it is instructive to note that the operation is as a result of a renewed inter-agency collaboration among security and law enforcement agencies. He said the Service has always subscribed to such collaboration believed to be important in national security management and therefore, hopes to sustain the initiative in mitigating the current threats against public safety and national critical assets.

The National Social Investment Office yesterday explained that the National Social Investment Programme was being upgraded to a full ministry status with the take-off of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in order to ensure the continuity and sustainability of the programme. NSIO Communications Manager, Justice Tienabeso Bibiye, in a statement, said the move came after the first term “successful implementation” of the scheme directly from the Presidency, indicating the need to now institutionalize the SIP.

Since 2015, the Office of the Vice President had been in control of the SIP. Y Bibiye said the SIP had benefited 42 million Nigerians “directly and indirectly” since the commencement of its implementation in 2016.

A former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (APC, Kano) has said that all political parties in the country have similar manifestoes and constitutions. He made the assertion during the 59th Nigerian Independence lectures organised by Hudaibiyya Centre held at Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Kano.

“Speaking from experience, when we wanted to form the All Progressives Congress (APC), I was among the three people that represented 89 people in the processes. We worked for six months trying to form the constitution and manifesto of APC and in the process we collected the constitutions and manifestos of over 30 registered political parties in the country. “To our surprise, all the parties have similar manifestos and constitutions but with different use of English, therefore whichever political party one belongs to is as good as the others and vice versa.

“If you are in doubt, get a copy of all the party constitutions and manifestos and you will understand what I am saying,” he said. Earlier in his presentation, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said Nigeria as a nation was in need of trustworthy leadership better than anything. He added that, “the bitter truth is that the North has not benefitted from President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.”

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State and Senator representing Sokoto North zone and Chairman, Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, have urged Nigerians to join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to move Nigeria to the ‘Next Level’. Governor Sule said, in a broadcast to commemorate Nigeria at 59 and Nasarawa at 23, that: “My good people of Nasarawa State, today’s celebration calls for sober reflection, considering the fact that even at 59th, our country is still grappling with issues of economic instability, corruption, insecurity and sundry challenges. There is the need for all of us to rise up to the occasion by supporting the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari towards a holistic overhaul of our society.

“In commemoration of the 23rd anniversary for the creation of Nasarawa State, it is instructive to remind ourselves that the desire for self-determination, economic empowerment, social cohesion and overall development were the impetus that propelled our founding fathers to agitate for the creation of Nasarawa State. “We will continue to commit efforts and resources in order to provide the necessary infrastructure that will reposition the Public Service to play its role of implementing the policies and programmes geared towards the development of the State.

” On his own part, Senator Wamakko, in a message to mark Nigeria’s 59th Independence Anniversary, said:”The President is making commendable and plausible efforts to take Nigeria to greater heights. “All well meaning citizens of the country owe it a duty to the nation, to render the necessary support with a view to ensuring the existence of a Nigeria, commensurate to the dreams of all.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed all the banks and other financial institutions to report suspicious transactions of entities or individuals on the global sanction lists of the United Nation’s Sanction Committee. The directive was contained in a circular dated September 20, 2019 and posted its website yesterday titled: “Suspicious Transaction Reporting on United Nations Security Council Resolutions on Proliferation of Financing”, and signed by J.M Gana, for Director Policy and Regulations Department.

The circular read: “Further to the provision of regulation 11 of CBN Anti-money laundering/ combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) Regulations, 2013 and our previous circulars on targeted financial sanctions, we write to remind all financial institutions on the need to increase surveillance and report all transactions involving persons and entities designated under the UNSCR 1718 and all other subsequent resolutions relating to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

“Financial institutions are advised to continuously screen both customers and transactions against global sanction lists and stop all transactions; freeze without delay all funds owned or controlled, directly or indirectly, by individuals or entities designated by the UN Sanction Committee. “All termination or fund frozen pursuant of the UNSCR must be immediately reported to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.”

A former Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, said yesterday that it was disheartening that Nigeria could only export crime and religion at 59. Tsav told our correspondent in Makurdi that Nigerians need to work harder and cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against corruption and injustice in order to move the country to a better level.

“It is disheartening that at 59 we are still a consumer nation; and we only export crime and religion,” he said. The ex-police chief added that, “we (Nigeria) cannot even manufacture toothpick. It’s a shame.” He posited that Nigeria is still in its teething period because nothing has been achieved substantially in areas of development and industrialisation. Tsav maintained that the educational sector and agriculture which should be the key to the country’s development, are still behind due to endemic corruption and social injustice.

He stressed however that with the Buhari’s presidency, Nigerians are making appreciable progress in agriculture. “If we must succeed, then it is necessary to remove immunity clause from all Governors and their Deputies. They are our prime problem against development in Nigeria,” Tsav concluded.

A retired Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, Aminu Aliyu Bisalla, and 81 other civil servants have been honoured for their outstanding performance by the acting Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan. The workers were recognised at a dinner and award ceremony held to mark the end of the 2019 civil service week at the weekend at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.

The Ag HSCF said the recipients had demonstrated an exceptional level of commitment, dedication, competence and efficiency in the course of their duties, adding that the recipients were grouped into three categories.

According to her, they are Presidential Distinguished Public Career Award, which is to honour retired permanent secretaries; Presidential Merit Award, which is to recognise directorate cadre officers; and Head of Service Commendation Letter for intermediate cadre officers. Apart from Bisalla, 31 other civil servants were rewarded in the Presidential Merit Award category, while 47 were awarded medals in the Head of Service Commendation category, while three other civil servants were also rewarded for winning an essay competition.

Dr. Yemi-Esan said that the recognition was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s vision and policy of recognizing hard work and integrity as well as improving service welfare. “It is expected that this will spur other officers to exhibit similar virtues of the recipients and be more dedicated. Therefore, I wish to extend the appreciation of the entire civil service to Mr. President for being so gracious in hosting this event,” she said.

She also restated the commitment and loyalty of the civil service to the mandate handed down by President Muhammadu Buhari administration to deliver on all its priority areas for the enhanced development of the country. “This, we will achieve through Your Excellency’s continued support and the eight priority areas in the 2017–2020 Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan FCSSIP), particularly in the area of Driving Innovation in the Service for development,” she added.

The presidency has condemned alleged child abuse at Ahmad Bn Hambal Islamiyya School in Rigasa, Igaba Local Government of Kaduna State where over 300 children were evacuated by the police. Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, in a statement, said free and compulsory education is the panacea to such menace.

Shehu, who hailed the police for their discovery of what he called the “horrific hub and arrest of suspected operators of the unedifying so-called reform institution”, said the administration of President Buhari categorically condemned rights abuses whether of adults or of children. He said to stop “unwanted cultural practices that amounted to the abuse of children”, religious and traditional authorities must work with the federal, state and local governments to “expose and stop all types of abuse that were widely known but ignored for many years by the communities”. “We are glad that Muslim authorities have dismissed the notion of the embarrassing and horrifying spectacle as Islamic School. “The place has indeed been described as a house of torture and a place of human slavery.

“The President holds the view that children will be safeguarded from roaming the streets and protected from all evil influences that assail idle hands and idle minds, when they are sent to school. “When he inaugurated the National Economic Council for the year 2019/2023 at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja, President Buhari warned that keeping children away from school is a criminal offence.

“He also stressed the need to take seriously and enforce the statutory provisions on free and compulsory basic education, citing Section 18(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which he says places on all of us ( public leaders and political office holders ) an obligation to eradicate illiteracy and provide free and compulsory education. “He added that “Section 2 of the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act provides that every government in Nigeria shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age.

“It is indeed a crime, he stressed, for any parent to keep his child out of school for this period. “While the government at the center has introduced a number of programmess, including the school feeding programme, which is now in 32 states in the country, with 9.8 million children in its roll to encourage school enrolment and enhance the health and learning capabilities of pupils, State and local governments are obliged under the law to ensure that every child of school age goes to school throughout the crucial nine years of basic education,” the statement also read.

Our edition on Saturday had reported a mild drama in front of the Ahmad Bn Hambal Islamiyya School in Rigasa, Igaba Local Government of Kaduna State on Friday when parents of the over 300 children evacuated by police called for the release of their children from police custody, saying they see no reason why the police should take their wards away from the school. The police had, on Thursday, raided the school, and took with them over 300 children in 15 Danfo buses to the Kaduna Police Command headquarters.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on medical practitioners in the country to take into consideration their patients’ plight before embarking on strike. Obasanjo made the appeal at the opening ceremony of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMD) National Executive Council meeting in Abeokuta.

A statement issued by the Special Assistant on Media to the former president Kehinde Akinyemi, on Friday, said Obasanjo, who was the Father of the Day at the occasion, urged the practitioners to take patients’ condition more paramount in their quest for better welfare. “A major issue that I always want to talk about whenever I am in your midst, which I told you when you came visiting is the issue of going on strike anytime you want to show your displeasure particularly, government doctors. “My position is that since the care for your patient is a major ethical issue of your profession, abandoning them to go on strike is even more unethical. “You should rather fashion another way to show your displeasure and not doing so at the expense of your patients,” Obasanjo said.

The former president also called for the resuscitation of the old central medical store system in order to boost availability of drugs in the country. “We used to have something like that in the past during the Western region. I don’t know whether we still have it. ” If we don’t, maybe this is time to return to it or have something near it, which will bring efficiency and affordability to our drug chain system,”he said. The Secretary to the Ogun Government, Mr Tokunbo Talabi, who represented Gov. Dapo Abiodun, corroborated Obasanjo as he called for caution on industrial actions.

“I want you to look into what Baba Obasanjo has said on this issue of strike. You can get alternative for taxi drivers if they decide to go on strike, yes, we have Okada drivers, but, this is not so for you. “God made you so special to save lives and you should live up to the expectation. We can devise other ways to save these lives, it is very important,” Talabi said. The Ogun Chairman of NAGGMD, Dr Olufemi Odusote, in his address of welcome, said the theme for the 2019 NEC meeting, “The Importance of Supply Chain Management in Health Care System Straightening,” is very important in the face of health challenges. These challenges, according to him , included manpower, brain drain and general welfare of members and security challenges had made doctors vulnerable. He, however, expressed optimism that with all hands on deck, the nation would definitely get solutions to the challenges confronting the body. (NAN)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that the presence of campaign posters of its key leaders for the 2023 presidential race are part of the strategies of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to cause confusion. APC National Publicity Secretary Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, who addressed journalists yesterday in Abuja, said it was an attempt to divert the attention of the governing party from focusing on the challenges of governance, security, economy and corruption as well as other associated issues which were important to Nigerians.

“As a party, we want to state clearly that having won elections convincingly and having been given the mandate to run government for the next four years, our major and only focus now is governance. “We are not engaging in any other activity about 2023 elections and wherever you see such (posters) you can be sure they are from mischief makers and of course we know it is part of the strategy of the PDP to continue to take actions to cause distractions for the governing party,” he said.
