Culture / Re: What Is The Significance Of The Yoruba Tribal Marks by Josh4ever9: 8:58am On Jul 03, 2007
Why must u call it facial mutilation? And the way u say the Yoruba is misleading, that is saying the whole of yoruba land practice tribal marking
Just as some people get annoyed when TOH and others say the igbo have naming ceremonies, some people get annoyed when freewilly and others say the yoruba practice facial mutilation, that is why this thread is never going to stop, until everybody stops ascribing something a subgroup of people do to the whole group,
Gaming / Re: Best Fighting Game Of All Time? by Josh4ever9: 8:51am On Jul 03, 2007
@ Lush, True Xiaoyu lacks power, but her speed more than makes up for it, if U've ver fought somebody that knows what he's doing with her, she's very difficult to beat, because before u can react, she's gone into another series of combos,

Please, Nina has some good chain grabs through, but her leg speed and strength is amazing, if she gets a few good leg combos on you, it's over,

I dont even mess with sword swipes man, I know they're dangerous, kinda why I like Soul calibur,

U play Dead or alive? The countering is annoying!
Gaming / Re: Best Fighting Game Of All Time? by Josh4ever9: 7:38pm On Jul 02, 2007
While soul calibur is good, Tekken Five Rocks!! The damage u can do with Bruce or Nina is incredible, how abt Xiaoyu, and anybody good with Christine is unbeatable,

Dead or Alive 2 for Dreamcast is not bad either,

Culture / Re: What Is The Significance Of The Yoruba Tribal Marks by Josh4ever9: 11:27pm On Jul 01, 2007
From what I've read, it's obvious that there is some bad history between the main posters on this thread, so that stops ppl from trying to understand what the other is saying,

The purposes of tribal marking has been explained time and time again, and although it's use is not really practical nowadays, like others have said it is a remnant of old cultural practices.

I dont think God gave anybody the right to judge other ppl's cultures and practices, so all those who are judging and making the yoruba culture seem negative or barbaric because of this should really stop, because it is reflecting negatively on them, I say this as somebody who is not familair with those on either side of the issue and making judgments based on what I read on this thread, it is enough to say you dont like it and that is your opinion which nobody can argue with, don't go making value judgments on the culture whether implicitly or explicitly,

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what you think is ugly, somebody else might think is beautiful, so please don't call something negative just because you think it is ugly,

As for child abuse, exactly what constitutes child abuse? these marks, like circumcision cause pain at the onset that fade away, only like some ppl have pointed out, tribal marks can cause ridicule especially at school, but what doesnt? should parents that have a funny last name or name their kids names like gaylord or butts, be accused of barbarism or child abuse because their child experiences ridicule in school? Just cause a child doesnt consent to something that some ppl might not like, that doesnt mean the child was abused,
Politics / Re: Nigerian Invents Anti-Rigging Machine! by Josh4ever9: 9:27pm On Jul 01, 2007
I read the article and the fact is, we dont know much about this machine, except he claims it is an anti-rigging machine, what does that mean? The machine was not described and neither were it's features,
Politics / Re: Should Nigeria Adopt The Jury System? by Josh4ever9: 2:17am On Mar 14, 2007
Jury system sounds good, but like a lotta ppl have said, itz not really going to work in Nigeria, not because of illiteracy or ethnic differences and all that.
Even before we get to that, therez one major hurdle that has to be overcome, How do we track ppl to be in a jury? The US has social security databases, but I dont think Nigeria has one, So before we even think of Juries, which I do not even think is the way to go, we would need to create an infrastructure that will allow for ppl to be tracked down.

Family / Re: Can You Marry A Former Prostitute? by Josh4ever9: 7:21am On Jan 24, 2007
The fact is you can love a prostitute and want to marry her, but the fact is problems will always come up u kno.
A lot of ppl go into something thinking they can handle it, but end up unable to cope. You can think you can cope, but then comes the day u and ur boys are talking abt the girls u had and somebody brings up ur wife by accident. or when that drunk uncle calls ur wife ashewo in front of her kids and spills her secret, all that shit.

And i think a prostitute is a prostitute. a man that sleeps with women for money will not be looked upon as kindly as a man that is just promiscous, i dont think. Anyways, shit happens ya kno.

@ Seun.
The web contains all information, please direct me to a legit one that tells me that boils dissapear in 24 hours without applying anything to it. A big boil too, or tell me of one that just suddently appears on you, already big and full of pus. Then I will believe that that wasnt juju.

The world is just being discovered by scientists, please dont believe that everything can be explained by science. it cannot even agree on how the world was created.

It's cool tho, if you dont believe all that exists, saves you a lot of worry.
Family / Re: Should Wives Submit To Their Husbands? by Josh4ever9: 6:55am On Jan 24, 2007
I feel for the women who are stuck with abusive husbands who tae advantage of their submissiveness, but the fact is nuymber one, if you compare the world population of married couples and the number of ppl abused, it's actually not that many - statistically, not to play light on the situation of the ones that are abused and taken advantage of.

I feel that this is an issue because men are not doing their duty. if they were, then women would not have a problem being submissive, because as some ppl have kindly pointed out, submissiveness is not the same as slavery and all that jazz.

The dictionary defines submissiveness as The quality or state of willingly carrying out the wishes of others. I think that is pretty self xplanatory, it doesnt mean letting a man beat on you or force you to his wish. in fact it is just another word for love, because isnt that love? willingly carrying out the wishes of others.

A way to solve all this jazz? just marry somebody you love who loves you and y'all will be mutually submissive, so it's all good.

I feel that there's a lot of static over this because a lot of ppl go by the negative connotations that have been attached to submissiveness instead of its original meaning which was probably what paul meant when he originally wrote thsi scripture.

PS
This issue is really not that important to be taking personal shots at each other yo, It's not like whatever is said here will change the course of the world you kno.

Be Easy.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood And Animal Cruelty by Josh4ever9: 5:59am On Jan 24, 2007
@ loverbwoy. firstly, someoe=ne has to tell me how u quote from ppl and have it in those nice green boxes. please.
secondly, what I'm saying is, nobody would kill a chicken even if for a movie and not eat it, especially in Nigeria.
pls dont confuse my unconcern with the killing of animals to killing of humans, it's a whole other level man, and that is a stretch and you kno it, so dont even go there. Let me put it this way, animals are there for us humans to eat, and whatever philosphy you as a Nigerian man subscribes to will collaborate my statement.
it might be unnecessay to kill an animal in a movie, but it's not barbaric.
Tell me this, now i'm no physicist, but which has more force and kills quicker. A jaw clamping down on something or a knife slicing a neck. it's just like comparing the guillotine to using a cutlass to slice someone's neck, there's no comparision. As somebody who has killed chickens before, I can tell you that sometimes, when u slice their neck, it can become very messy and the chicken doesnt die immediately and instead you force it to bleed to death, so in the end which is more humane, since that is what you are going for right.

fact, a lot of things that are considered barbaric today, were more humane than methods used today. Hanging was considered barbaric, but it was more humane that the electric chair for example, so please stop throwing barbaric out there like it is common currency.

The thing is, when ppl use words like uncivilised and barbaric to refer to things a majority of their own ppl do, then i start to worry where their definition of those terms come from.
I definately advocate peeing in ur front garden, it's the cool thing to cool. smiley
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood And Animal Cruelty by Josh4ever9: 7:53am On Jan 16, 2007
@ loverboy

But those five chicken's he kills will be eaten, and if he didnt bite them off, they will be killed eventually won't they? and probably with a knife, which can be very messier and more grotesque than biting.

if u actually examine it, biting the chicken heads off is probably more humane for the chicken than cutting it's neck with a knife.

Maybe they should start using real bullets, it will get rid of a lot of bad actors in all the "woods". smiley
Culture / Re: Thunder Bolt (Magun): Myth Or Reality? by Josh4ever9: 6:17am On Jan 14, 2007
I know for a fact that Juju exists and if it does magun exists too.
I heard this from a confidential source, this is a well balanced person, she has more than two degrees from college and is a very religious christian. She told me that she went to her home town one time and when she was leaving all of a sudden discovered a boil on her thigh that was just growing bigger. she prayed over it and the next day the boil dissapeared. those of you who have had boils know that this is not normal, they do not dissapear in a day no matter how much vaseline you put on them. So if Juju exists, then magun definately exists.

The world is full of panaromal and supernatural things that science or orthodiox christianity cannot explain, but the blood of jesus is all encompassing.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood And Animal Cruelty by Josh4ever9: 6:03am On Jan 14, 2007
@ Wale

I guess thanks for giving me that opportunity, but next time make urself clearer and you do not need to start calling people names in trying to get ur view across. first i was a simpleton, now i'm a chauvunist, for expressing my own views? for someone who claims to respect people's views, you are certainly not showing me that, so I will do you one better and call you a hypocrite.

I respect every bodies view, but i do not see the sense in cahing something for the benefit of a minority. it does not make sense artistically, financially and what every "lly" you want to think of. while it is all humane or nice, or wahtever you want to call it.
I think the people who created the VCR and DVD player also respected people's views, that is why they included the fast forward button. And i'm getting really tired of saying it, but if it bothers anybody, fast froward through the scene or don't watch the movie.

After all, every movie industry has something that will offend a minority. Just the other day, i was telling somebody that Hollywood is really gratitous with it's explicit sex scenes in almost all it's movies, And now that I'm past my hormonal adolescence, it really annoys me and I feel detracts from the movie, because it is not needed at all in most cases to progress the plot, but you dont see me complaining abt it or saying change it. you kno what i do? i either fast forward or close my eyes and bear through it.

Bollywood has an overdose of singing and dancing that sometimes grates on my nerves but you know what i do? i either fast forward thorugh it, close my eyes and ears or bear it.

So my advice? if the Nigerian movie industry or "nollywood" has scenes that bother you or anybody else, you know what? fast forward through it or do whatever you want to do.

Just dont go on forums calling people simpletons or chauvunists cause they do not see the sense in complaining abt something so inconsequential.
next time please read whatever post you want to comment on carefully before writing down whatever just pops into your head otherwise you will seem like the simpleton you accuse people of being.

Have a nice day.
Programming / Re: How Can I Practice Programming on My PC? by Josh4ever9: 5:49am On Jan 14, 2007
As a fellow computer science student in University. I started programming with java and it has worked out pretty well for me. I cant say abt visual basic, i tried it, but it didnt mesh with me.

Even if ur programming for fun, my advice is to start with java because that will help you with the fundamentals and help u think like a programmer, which will make learning all the other programming languages much easier as the only thing different is syntax.

I've heard it from a lot of sources, my teachers included, that QBasic and the whole basic family is bad to start learning programming in, cause u will learn some bad habits on the way.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood And Animal Cruelty by Josh4ever9: 10:26pm On Jan 13, 2007
Typical Nigerian Simpleton heh? I beg your pardon that i refuse to let the views of a minority number of people influence the way i feel abt things. And calling me a simpleton will not change that fact.
And i still stand by my ealier statement that if u are bothered by the animal cruelty, then hit fast forward.

And to refer to calling me a typical Nigerian simpleton. obviously you have not lived in Nigeria, or if you did you have lived a very priviledged live there, not to say that there is anything wrong with that. It's just that many Nigerians have experienced or have killed an animal in their backyard. maybe a chicken, or the killing of a cow for a large event or a goat even and so on. So How is killing an animal in a movie different or cruel?
The film makers depict reality, as a lot of people have posted, so are you going to bring the nigerian population to task for the way they get their food in real life?

This notion of animal cruelty is an inconsequential topic that should not even be an issue, instead try to focus on more important and urgent things facing Nigeria today.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood And Animal Cruelty by Josh4ever9: 4:02am On Jan 10, 2007
i]hypocrisy has different levels

I'm talking about animal cruelty in the context of films! Films are meant to depict life story as in the case of nollywood. They might aswelll start killing humans just to get as real as possible.
Putting a knife next to an animal is enough- we'll get the message, killing an animal especially in that manner is a bit absurd and unnecessarily

and please this is not a case of west vs africa, it's a bit of common sense

I still dont see why this is an issue and I for one do not see your point in saying just put the knife next to an animal. How is that making a movie? If they do that, then the actors might as well put their face next to each other, we'll get the message that they are talking.
Why is killing an animal in a movie absurd and unneccessary? Or do you think that the dead animal will go to waste or the food will not be eaten? And like some people said, if it bothers you, then hit the fast forward button on your remote.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood And Animal Cruelty by Josh4ever9: 8:20am On Jan 09, 2007
The problem is that strangling a dog for an hour is callous and an act of wanton unnecessary wickedness, i think that until Nigerians recognize that being more humane to animals will encourage them to behave better towards other humans then they will continue to have problems in the social, political and and economic sphere of life.
In the U.K it is not an offence to kill animals but it is an offence to cause an animal needless suffering in killing it and i would say that strangulating a dog for one hour is causing needless suffering to a helpless creature.
If we don't get this then we will spend forever playing catchup with the rest of the world because callousness will be evident in our dealings with each other for example i read in a paper last year that the money allocated for drugs for H.I.V. positive people was embezzled in one of the delta states last year.
I see nothing wrong with eating meat but i do object to someone causing needless suffering,it is sadistic, barbarous and it dehumanizes the person.

Why is this a Nigerian problem? and in who's views are we considering this a moral problem that will cause us to forever play catchup with the rest of the world? How is killing an animal in whatever way humane or not depending on your view different from American policemen shooting an unarmed man 40 times? or shooting 50 bullets into a car and killing an innocent man on his wedding day? or forcing naked men to lay in a human pyramid? Or US soldiers killing unarmed civilians including women and children?
So who are we looking at for an example of humane behavior? we have much bigger problems in Africa than behaving in a "humane" way to animals. Preventing an actor from biting the head off of a chicken will not prevent robbers from killing a man or the government from doing what it usually does.
I propose that we stop judging ourselves by standards that a select part of the world has set and not try to be like the rest of the world, mainly the western world because then we will always be playing catchup.
