Politics / The Danger Of Survival by Jovie: 2:46pm On Oct 21, 2010
Nigerians r very docile. We dnt respnd to issues until they push us 2 the wall n begin 2 crush us. Our politicians continue to mess wt us and we dnt react because 'at least we're still alive'. We're jst surviving. Until we begin 2 demand better representation, more integrity, more responsibility from our politicians, we will continue 2 simply survive. We nid a country where we can thrive, with security n gud education n power etc. I wrote a lot more on the danger of survival at www.aspire.org.ng. We deserve better out of life. Or dnt u agree?

Religion / Understanding mas-tur-ba-tion by Jovie: 12:47am On Oct 14, 2010
the nairaland system has changed all the places where the word mas-tur-ba-tion was used here to "self-service". but the meanings remain the same.

There's this really great article that explains self-service clearly and biblically. Its written by Emeka S. Nwadigo. The full article is on http://aspire.org.ng but here is an excerpt:

The purpose of this page is to explain why self-service can be detrimental to life and to encourage people to abandon the practice. Granted, self-service may bring temporary pleasure, but it often comes with the long-term cost of addiction and other sexual problems. Because many people reading this page are not Christians, I’ve created a separate section for the spiritually-based points.

If you are a Christian, I encourage you to take a moment to ask God to show you the truth concerning self-service.

Non-spiritual points about self-service

1. self-service is addictive! I encourage anyone who doubts self-service is addictive to see how many weeks or months they can go without self-servicing. We know now that sexual addictions are in fact self-induced drug addictions. The chemicals our bodies release during sexual arousal create the same effect on the brain as drugs. Repeated self-service reinforces a brain chemistry loop of addiction…As with drug addiction; self-service requires an increasing amount of stimulus to achieve consistent levels of pleasure. This can lead to both an increased frequency of the habit and a never-ending search for new material to enhance the experience.

2. self-service conditions our bodies to respond to self-stimulation, which is self-centered. This damages our ability to relate to another person sexually. Sex is a relational experience, where we give attention to another person’s needs at least as much as to our own. If we’ve been serving our own desires habitually, we may find it difficult to give our partner the attention he or she desires. Additionally, the hormones released in the brain during sexual arousal cause a bonding to whatever we are looking at and/or thinking about at the time. This can cause us to be more sexually responsive to self-service (and its associated fantasies) than to real sex.

,
Spiritual points about self-service

For Christians, there are some important issues we need to address concerning self-service. The foundational question is, “Are you committed to honoring God with your life?” If you are, then I urge you to carefully consider the points presented in this section.

Let’s first examine the typical sins that accompany self-service: lust and sexual idolatry. These may not be involved in every case, but they usually are.
Lust
Definitions from Webster’s Dictionary:

(1) Intense or unbridled sexual desire, lasciviousness…an intense longing: craving
(11) to have an intense desire or need, crave
Obvious examples of lust during self-service include looking at indecency and fantasizing about sex. As we can see from the definitions, lust can simply be an intense longing or craving. It may not even be a conscious thought, but simply a gut feeling of the flesh.

When we look at indecency or form sexual images by memory or imagination during self-service, we are basically feeding an immoderate attachment or devotion to the idol of sex. Such attachment and devotion is greatly reinforced by the pleasurable brain chemicals released during sexual arousal and heavenly feeling.

Idolatry is sin (Exodus 20:3-5) and it can bring unpleasant consequences, such as demonic oppression and generational curses. God’s primary command to us is that we love him with all our heart, soul and mind (Matthew 22:36-38). I suggest that it is impossible to love God with all our heart, soul and mind when we are idolizing sex images in our eyes and thoughts!

Religion / Re: Aspire To Greater Heights by Jovie: 12:41am On Sep 27, 2010
We live in a time when a lot of people settle for mediocrity. We no more challenge ourselves to reach higher, do more and try to be more. A wise man once said, "Let your aim not be to have more but to be more".

We have young people today setting their eyes on quickly "making it" in life. We want to get to the end without starting at the beginning. After looking at this situation, and having found out that there is greater joy in success if you actually know the reasons for it, I had to do something about the situation.

In this regard, I decided to start a magazine called Aspire. With Aspire, we intend to enlighten and educate young people. We intend to present issues in a fresh perspective that will make them challenge themselves and decide to rise above average and go beyond, transcend their environment.

I have so far started the online version at www.aspire.org.ng. I still need more writers who have this same vision to join us at Aspire as we try to bring out the best of the young generation. I am one of the young, so I do not speak from a distant point of view.

Join us to realise this vision of a more enlightened generation of young people who are trailblazers areas of leadership, academics, entrepreneurship and positive societal change in general.

I dunno what interswitch can do about it b4 the 30th because late reg fee is 10,000 and that's no small money.

Romance / Re: Are Men More Faithful Than Women? by Jovie: 6:26pm On Jan 26, 2010
I was speaking to a friend once on an issue like this. He told me about when he visited his family friend, a reputable professor.

the man told him, "men are naturally polygamous depending on their operating conditions. Women are naturally prostitutes depending on their operating conditions".

Now, what he means by operating conditions are environmental factors that make a man's naturally polygamous tendency more or less pronounced.  It refers to the factors that make a woman's protituting tendency more or less pronounced.

I've read other people's posts about women being conditioned by society to hide their tracks while men being naturally boastful about achievements do not bother to hide what they do.

This professor's statement does not necessarily answer the question, but provides a basis for making assess behaviours.

Career / Re: How Important Is It To Be On Your Own? by Jovie: 7:44pm On Jan 09, 2010
I agree with Ajanlekoko, he's got a point there.

Inasmuch as entrepreneurship is quite difficult, and the "Nigerian situation" is peculiar, nothing can hold back the mind that is determined. Somebody said we don't have many people here in Nigeria who started with nothing and ended up with much. But we can create those stories. And i intend to do just that. That journey might be long, but i must get to my destination.

Starting with my family business which i intend to expand, i hope in the next few years to bring about a "seasoned" business, giving quality and helping my clients achieve their aims.

Being entrepreneural can change a lot of things. I encourages advancement. It encourages innovation. And this country will definitely need more innovative people. I intend to take my web development business, Sigma Transaction to higher levels, and indeed, i would love to have even more entrepreneurial people doing the same with me.

It can be hard juggling a job and personal business, or studies and business. But the rewards are much for honest effort.
