Politics / 2023: Why APC Must Honour North, South Agreement It Had Before 2015– Adefuye by joyairemiya: 6:20pm On Jul 29, 2021
Senator Anthony Adefuye, a Third Republic federal lawmaker and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday said there was an unwritten gentleman agreement reached by the All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders during its formation between the North and South on the rotation of the presidency.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, Adefuye, a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) in Lagos State and a delegate to the 2014 National Conference said he agreed with the position of the Southern governors that the presidency should come to the South in 2023 after President Muhammadu Buhari who is from the Northern part of the country has completed his eight years.

Adefuye said, “In party politics, there is usually no written agreement. But there is a known agreement in APC that the North will rule for two terms of eight years, after that it would be the turn of the South. So, if Buhari had spent two terms that is for the North; it will now come back to the South in 2023.”

Politics / 2023: Nigerians Waiting For PDP To Take Power – Atiku by joyairemiya: 6:06pm On Jul 29, 2021
Former Vice President of Nigeria Alhaji Atiku Abubakar said Nigerians are waiting eagerly for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to take over power in 2023.

Speaking to reporters at the Rivers State Government House, Port Harcourt, Atiku said his meeting with Governor Nyesom Wike was fruitful.

He explained that party affairs brought him to Port Harcourt, and he had spent the time reconciling touching issues with Governor Wike.

According to him, the issues bordered on how to ensure unity and stability in PDP, noting that it is critical for the party in clinching electoral victory in 2023.

‘Well, I came here to reconcile with the governor on party affairs and how we can ensure that there is unity and stability in the party,’ he said.

‘So, that we can take over government in 2023. I believe that Nigerians can’t wait for 2023 to come so that PDP will return.’

Speaking on the current insecurity challenges that have overwhelmed the capacity of the All Progressives Congress(APC)-led federal government, Atiku described the prevailing situation in the country as bad.

He urged Nigerians to wait for the appropriate time when PDP would unveil its policies on how it wants to address the issue of insecurity across the country.

‘I have never seen it (insecurity) this bad. I am 70 years plus. I have never seen it this bad in terms of security challenges, in terms of economy, in terms of unemployment. This is the worst,’ Atiku stated.

‘Why can’t you give us time. We will come up with our policies. We will present them to Nigerians when the time comes.

‘We have done that before. Under PDP, we recorded the highest economic growth, the best foreign reserves, we reduced unemployment. You know that we can do it?’

The former vice president also acknowledged the tremendous leadership success recorded by governor Wike, who he described as the topmost governor among his peers in the party.

‘I think he (Wike) is the topmost governor we have in the party. There is no doubt about that in terms of projects, youths and employment, in terms of security. Yes, we have security challenges all over the country.’

He further commended the governor for his outstanding leadership and sterling performance in office.

Politics / Senator Adefuye Blasts Obasanjo, Says Buhari Remains Nigeria's Best President by joyairemiya: 8:39am On Jul 27, 2021
Senator Anthony Adefuye, a Third Republic senator and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday said that President Muhammadu Buhari is the best president in the history of Nigeria no matter the negative thing some Nigerians are saying about him.

Speaking in an interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT, Adefuye also lambasted those saying former President Olusegun Obasanjo performed better than other Nigerian leaders, saying Obasanjo did almost nothing during his tenure from 1999 to 2007, especially in the South-West region.

According to him, Buhari is the one fixing most of the things that Obasanjo left untouched during his eight years reign.

Adefuye who also accused Obasanjo of selling national assets to private individuals also listed the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, railways and airlines as some of the things that Obasanjo never fixed which President Buhari has now turned around.

“President Buhari is someone I know who has been a military president before and now he is a democratic president. He wants to show the world that he is truly democratic. We all should give it to him. Let me tell you one thing, President Buhari is the best president Nigeria has ever had. No matter what people say about him, he still remains the best in the history of this country”.

“Some people are saying (Olusegun) Obasanjo. Which Obasanjo? Obasanjo , Obasanjo nii. When Obasanjo was president, the price of crude oil was $140 per barrel, he did not build a single rail in the South-West. So, what are they talking about? He didn’t do anything in the South-West. He didn’t even build the road that leads to Ota”.

“He seized the allocation of Lagos for almost two years. Even the Lagos-Ibadan expressway he didn’t do anything about it. It is Buhari that is ensuring that the road is rehabilitated now. It is Buhari that is building the Second Niger Bridge. It is Buhari that is building rail lines and bringing our airlines back”.

“All these were killed during Obasanjo’s regime. During Obasanjo’s regime, we sold all the national assets to individuals. So, what are these people mentioning Obasanjo’s name talking about? Buhari is one man who has spent Nigeria’s money for Nigeria”.

Politics / LG Polls: LASIEC Chairman Says PDP's Complaints In YABA LCDA Has Been Resolved by joyairemiya: 6:06pm On Jul 26, 2021
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) on Monday said it has successfully resolved the complaint by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over alleged intimidation of voters and manipulation of results in the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) election.

The PDP Chairman in the state, Dr Adegbola Dominic who spoke with DAILY INDEPENDENT said intimidation and harassment of voters by political thugs working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) disrupted the announcement of results in the council after realising the PDP candidate was leading.

According to him, APC thugs allegedly prevented the LASIEC presiding officer from announcing the full results after realizing the PDP candidate was leading after 18 out of 20 ballot boxes have been counted.
He said the party has notified Justice Ayotunde Phillips, LASIEC chairman about the development and are expecting the right thing to be done as regards the council.

He also said many people who wanted to vote couldn’t do so as they have been disenfranchised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which failed to provide them with their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).
He said “Two factors are responsible for the poor results the PDP got.

“The number one factor is the thuggery and aggression by APC. They have bribed thugs and miscreants to ensure that the PDP doesn’t win in their areas. So, wherever these thugs realise that PDP is having an upper hand in some areas, they unleash mayhem on the voters or snatch the ballot boxes”.

“For example in Yaba LCDA, they have 20 ballot boxes, the presiding officer had counted 18 of them and PDP was leading by 200 votes. The remaining two ballot boxes to be counted, thugs just appeared from nowhere with guns and prevented the presiding officer from counting the remaining two ballot boxes”.

“We had to call Justice Phillips, the LASIEC chairman to complain and she noted it and hopefully, we believed we will get our deserved victory in that council.

“Another factor is that the people have been shortchanged with the provision of PVC. So, many people who wanted to vote have no PVCs. INEC prevented a lot of people from collecting their PVCs. People were waiting at INEC offices to collect their PVCs but INEC made it so difficult for them to do so”.

“Right now, a large number of the populace have been disenfranchised because they don’t have voters cards. Hopefully, I hope the e-registration will correct this anomaly. The APC members went to the voting centres and voted with passports, party identity cards. It is like a lawless society”.

When contacted, Justice Phillips, the LASIEC chairman acknowledged the fact that the PDP lodged a complaint to her, adding that the issue has been resolved. “Yes, it is and the matter has now been resolved,” she said.

Politics / Kanu, Igboho: Military Dictatorship Rearing Its Head In Democracy - Joe Odumakin by joyairemiya: 7:13am On Jul 26, 2021
Comrade Joe Okei- Odumakin, President, Women Arise in her first interview since the passing of her husband, Comrade Yinka Odumakin, former spokesman of Afenifere who passed on in April 2, 2021, spoke on what he lived for and efforts being made to preserve his legacies through the Oluyinka Odumakin Foundation (OOF). She also addressed the myriads of challenges facing the nation and why the current administration should implement the report of the 2014 National Conference. TEMIDAYO AKINSUYI brings the excerpts:

Ma, it’s over three months since the passage of your beloved husband, Comrade Yinka Odumakin, former spokesman of Afenifere. How has life been ever since?

Just like it is expected, life has not been, and can never be same again, having to lose someone you’ve spent the greater part of your present age with, in such an unexpected manner. Losing a man I met in the prison (Alagbon) whose life represents everything I have dreamt of living for, even before meeting him, could be so devastating. But I have one consolation, it is the fact that Comrade, as I often called Yinka lived a life whose memory, will outlive even those of us that are still alive after his departure. It’s been such a unimaginable experience, a part of me is gone but in all things, we give thanks to God.

Were you surprised by the outpouring of emotions that trailed his passage even after his burial?

The outpouring of emotions and number of condolences received since the demise of Comrade on April 2nd 2021, is such that remains indescribable. While there is no doubt about the popularity of my departed dear husband in the socio-political arena of Nigeria, we were amazed by the magnitude of condolences and solidarity received both locally and internationally, from friends, associates, sympathisers and even his political opponents, while he was alive. The show of love to me and the entire family were such, that added a lot of soothing balm to the pains of losing my everlasting date at that point in time.

What are some cherished moments you can share about him?

They were too numerous to count, an encyclopedia of Positive activism, but most significantly is the large turnouts witnessed at the major funeral events held in Lagos and his hometown of Moro in Osun State. It was such a moment that people from all walks of life defied distance and any form of hindrance, to honour an enigma, whom many of them defined as one of the most consistent and dogged fighter, that have passed through our land. The Day of Tributes in Lagos was such an emotional moment that will not be easily forgotten by all of us.

You established a foundation in his name, Oluyinka Odumakin Foundation (OOF). What are the specific things this foundation will do? Will it be in form of a library or gallery?

The foundation will exist not only in an academic form of library or Gallery, it is one that will work and replicate the life and times of Yinka Odumakin, which includes the promotion of good governance and social justice, educate and engage the public interest, promote inclusive governance, work with organisations, community leaders to promote equal and sustainable growth in Nigeria.

You were both delegates to the 2014 national conference. What is your take on the fact that the report of that conference is yet to be implemented 7 years after?

The refusal of the Nigerian government to implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference has been a major setback, in the quest for solutions to the myriad of our national challenges. Today, we live in a country, that has become dangerously polarised along religious and ethnic divides, which were some of the key areas, where the conference made far-reaching recommendations, towards its solution. The question of true federalism remained unanswered despite all the promises of the president and his political party before being elected in 2015. Any serious government committed to finding solution to many of Nigeria’s problem, majorly created by the refusal to restructure the country, must consider the recommendations of the National conference, which in my opinion, has the capacity to address some of these challenges, to a reasonable extent.

The late Yinka Odumakin spoke about the need for Nigeria’s restructuring till he breathe his last. Do you think restructuring of Nigeria can happen in our lifetime?

It is the most urgent route, to stop the impending disintegration of this country and as such, must be taken seriously by anyone who genuinely have the interest of Nigeria at heart. Our country is at a tipping point where life has become brutish, short and nasty. Economic hardship in the midst of abundant resources and lack of unity, created by the lack of justice equity and fairness. These were the issues around the call for restructuring that Comrade Yinka and other patriots dedicated their lives, to advocate for. Even in his absence, we will continue to demand for the restructuring of Nigeria, not for the sake of our generation or our lifetime, but the future of the country, and generation yet unborn.

The arrest of Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho is generating reactions globally. How best do you think this should be handled?

Bearing in mind the way and manner in which Nnamdi Kanu was whisked into Nigeria recently, in circumstances yet to be fully explained, and the various efforts at enacting gag laws by the same Nigerian authorities, there is no denying the fact that fascism is already creeping upon Nigerians with the latest incident involving Chief Sunday Igboho. The telltale signs of military dictatorship are rearing their ugly heads again under a supposedly democratic government of President Muhammadu Buhari. In this wise, it is certain that Igboho cannot be assured safety or justice if extradited to Nigeria. He should be released from detention unconditionally and his safety and liberty guaranteed by the Republic of Benin authorities under extant international law. The Nigerian authorities are better advised to stop chasing shadows but address the patent dangers posed to the country by the despicable elements it is treating with kid gloves.

What is your take on the manner the National Assembly voted against electronic transmission of election results?

It is important to remind ourselves, that Nigerians and election stakeholders have advocated for improvements to the electoral process, particularly the use of technology in elections, to improve efficiency and transparency. Hence, the support and our insistence on the electronic transmission of election results by INEC. Our constitution is very clear about how it has given INEC powers to device any process to guarantee that everybody is able to vote and so INEC is empowered to transmit results electronically. Therefore, what the national assembly is doing, is an attempt to smuggle itself in, as an umpire into our electoral process and this remains illegal. It is an attempt to write results meaning our votes will never count. For no reason, can the national assembly, NCC or any other body impose itself or interfere into how INEC conduct elections or executive it’s constitutional powers. This is unacceptable and Nigerians will challenge this legitimately in order to protect the sanctity of our electoral system.

Politics / Police Were Helpless As APC Thugs Hold LASIEC Officials Hostage - PDP by joyairemiya: 8:26pm On Jul 25, 2021
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter on Sunday said intimidation and harassment of voters by political thugs working for the All Progressives Congress (APC) was majorly responsible for the party’s poor showing in last Saturday’s local government elections in the state.

While the official results are yet to be announced by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), results released so far showed the APC winning by a landslide in the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Speaking in an interview with Daily Independent, Dr Adegbola Dominic, the state chairman of PDP said in a particular local government area, APC thugs allegedly prevented the LASIEC presiding officer from announcing the full results after realizing the PDP candidate was leading after 18 out of 20 ballot boxes have been counted.

According to him, many APC members went to the polling centres with passport photo and party identity cards and were allowed to vote.

He said “Two factors are responsible for the poor results the PDP got. The number one factor is the thuggery and aggression by APC. They have bribed thugs and miscreants to ensure that the PDP doesn’t win in their areas. So, wherever these thugs realise that PDP is having an upper hand in some areas, they unleash mayhem on the voters or snatch the ballot boxes”.

The remaining two ballot boxes to be counted, thugs just appeared from nowhere with guns and prevented the presiding officer from counting the remaining two ballot boxes”.

“The police were there but they were helpless. The people in the area now insisted that the presiding officer must announce the result which is the law. The law says that the presiding officer must announce the winner at the ward collating centre.

“However, the man refused to announced the results. The police had to take the two uncounted ballot boxes to the police station and the presiding officer then announced that the election was inconclusive”.

Politics / Nigeria Can't Make Progress Because Of Disagreement Among APC Leaders-afenifere by joyairemiya: 1:45pm On Jul 25, 2021
Chief Ayo Adebanjo, national leader of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere has said Nigeria cannot make any meaningful progress owing to the disagreements between the leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a party he described as ‘conglomeration of incompatibles.

Speaking in an interview with DAILY INDEPENDENT, 93 year old Adebanjo also said he is an impromptu candidate for murder by the current administration owing to his constant criticisms of the actions and policies of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said “I am an impromptu candidate for murder by Buhari because I will continue to oppose him. I repeat, I am an impromptu candidate for Buhari to kill. But he is just wasting his time at 93 years old”.

“God has done enough for me. That is why despite all that he is doing, there is a silence of the graveyard in the country. People are hungry and jobless. Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder. The day it will burst, even Buhari will be surprised. God does not support injustice”.

“When I say Buhari is fake and he has a private agenda, I know what I’m saying. He wants Fulani to take over and that was why he allowed them to come in. When we ask them about the herders killing people, they would say they are foreigners.”

“How can the country make progress when those running the affairs of the party are in disarray? When APC was formed then, I said it publicly that the APC is a conglomeration of incompatibles. There is no principle binding them together. It is a question of sharing of offices and power, there is no abiding ideology. Why can’t they come together and agree on restructuring if truly they have the interest of this country at heart?”

Politics / Igboho: Real Activists Don’t Flee, They Stay To Fight Battles – Yunusa Tanko by joyairemiya: 6:08pm On Jul 22, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi

LAGOS – Dr. Yunusa Tanko, a former presidential candidate on Thursday said Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho shouldn’t have fled Nigeria to Benin Republic over attempt to by the security agents to arrest him.

Speaking with DAILY INDEPENDENT, Yunusa who is the National Chairman of the National Conscience Party (NCP) said like the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (SAN), true activists stay and fight their battles especially when their agitation has to do with the welfare of the common man.

The Head of Public Affairs Bureau, National Consultative Front (NCFront) however said he laid the blame for sectional agitations in the country on various tiers of government which has failed to do the right things and address the myriads of problems confronting the Nigerian people.

According to him, if the government had carried out its responsibilities effectively, activists like Sunday Igboho will not emerge.

“If you are leading a battle, you should be able to face the consequence. Majority of people who have led secession agenda either fell by the way or they face treasonable felony accusation by the government, who of course will not just watch while the sovereignty of the country is at jeopardy”.

“If you are an activist who is fighting for the interest of the people, then you don’t run anywhere when the government comes after you. Stay within the confines of the country and fight your way through even when you are being arrested. That is the way we are trained”.

“That was the way Gani Fawehinmi led us. Gani didn’t run anywhere. He faced his battles squarely despite several arrests and attacks by the military government. Infact, he taught some of us who are his foot soldiers that anywhere we are going, we should go with our bags of drugs, toothpaste, brush and other essentials because we can be arrested at anytime”.

“ If you are defending and fighting for the rights of the people, you don’t need to run to anywhere. You stand by your words and face the battle” he said.

Politics / Igboho: People Run Away When They Feel They Won’t Get Justice – Jimi Agbaje by joyairemiya: 7:22pm On Jul 21, 2021
Jimi Agbaje, former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos state has urged the Federal Government to follow due process in the case of Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho who was arrested and detained in Benin Republic.

Igboho who was arrested at an airport in Cotonou on Monday night alongside his wife, Ropo Adeyemo is still being held by Beninise authorities.

Speaking with DAILY INDEPENDENT, Agbaje also urged the Benin Republic government to ensure due process is followed unlike the case of the extradition of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) whose manner of return to Nigeria from Kenya is still shrouded in secrecy.

Agbaje said: “Everything should be by due process. We don’t want a situation where we are becoming a police state where every measure of opposition is handled with a very heavy hand. The idea of chasing people around to me is not the best way to go".

“People run away from the law when they feel they will not get justice. If you feel that the way they even come after you is as if you are already guilty, then how can you get justice? For me, the Sunday Ighoho matter should be handled with due process.

“The Benin Republic government should do things properly so that we don’t have a repetition of what happened in the case of Nnamdi Kanu".

“Till today, we are not even clear as to how Kanu came into the country. But it is obvious that something is hidden and it did not follow the due process. That is why nobody has come out to tell us exactly what happened. We hope that due process will be followed in Igboho’s case.

“Everybody must feel that the law is even-handed. You are not guilty until so proven. Nobody is saying anyone who is guilty of a crime shouldn’t be prosecuted but justice, equity and fair play must be done and due process must be followed.”

Politics / The Senators Representing Lagos State Are Tinubu’s Servants – PDP by joyairemiya: 3:36pm On Jul 17, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos state chapter on Saturday has described as a disaster the decision of the three senators from the state who voted against electronic transmission of election results.

Speaking in a chat with SATURDAY INDEPENDENT, Dr Adegbola Dominic, the state chairman of the PDP said the actions of the senators did not come to him as a surprise given the fact that they are puppets of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos and national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Their rejection of electronic transmission of results is a disaster but it didn’t come to me as a surprise because we know the type of people representing us in the National Assembly. The three senators are servants and puppets of Tinubu, and they see him as their master. They don’t have a mind of their own; it is what he tells them that they do.

“Tinubu is a man that has no character; a man with multiple names and ages. Don’t forget, he rejected national conference in 2014 describing it as a ‘Greek gift’ and he has also been silent on restructuring.

“So, I am not surprised the three senators from Lagos too are against electronic transfer of results.

“Their actions have further confirmed that APC doesn’t mean well for this country and that is why we are working hard to get them out of government,” Dominic said.

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently making moves to dissolve the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party headed by the national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, Daily Independent has gathered.

However, Secondus, who does not want to take any chances, is said to be fighting back.

The governors, led by Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, are also working at constituting a National Caretaker Committee that will pilot the affairs of the party until a national convention is held.

According to a credible source in the party, other governors with Wike in the move to dissolve the NWC are governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri; Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

He said the governors, who are worried about the defections in the party and the urgent need to reposition it ahead of the 2023 general elections, believe there is a need to put in a place a new set of executives “who can stop the hemorrhage and save the party from dying”.

When reminded that few weeks ago, the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) both passed votes of confidence in the national leadership of the party, our source said the governors’ action is the recent development in the party, especially as the nose-diving fortune of the party does not justify the continued stay of the Secondus-led exco.

Speaking further, he said the move by the governors to dissolve the NWC may not sail through as it does not have the backing of the party’s BoT.

“The governors cannot summon a NEC meeting. Only the national chairman of the party has powers to do so. Do you think Secondus will summon a NEC meeting where the issue of his removal will be the major issue?” he asked.

Daily Independent also gathered that Secondus who is aware of the plot by the governors to oust him is also fighting back by reaching out to them on the need for unity and stability in the party.

While other governors, who are displeased with Secondus had chosen to remain silent on the matter, Wike who is known to be fearless had publicly attacked the party leadership at several fora.

Wike, who played a key role in Secondus emergence as the national chairman, has not hidden his disdain for the NWC and had called them several derogatory names such as ‘tax payers’.

He also said that instead of focusing on strategies on how to take advantage of the alleged growing disenchantment with the APC government, the PDP-NWC was busy creating crisis among governors.

“The present National Working Committee is not interested or doing anything to take over the realms of government in 2023. When your interest is to remain in power, you are no longer interested in winning election,” he had said.

The Rivers State governor also called Secondus a liar in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of former governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke.

He said: “If he (Secondus) had shown leadership in Cross River, our party would not have had the problem we have today.

“The national chairman said we need good leadership in the country, but if you don’t show good leadership, the party cannot produce good leaders. That is the truth of the matter.

“We talk about character.

What is leadership? Leadership is about character, boldness, selflessness and audacity.

“As a leader, you must have character. Not to speak white in the morning and you speak black in the evening. Is that leadership? What are we telling our youths? We are talking about the future of this country.”

Speaking with Daily Independent, a member of the NWC from the Northern part of the country, said it is unfair for the governors to lay the blame of the defections of state governors on the doorstep of the national chairman.

He said if for anything, the governors should take the blame for failing to persuade their colleagues not to leave the party for the APC.

“I am happy they are not accusing the national chairman or any member of the NWC of corruption. What they are hammering on is defection. But what do they expect the national chairman to do when these people have made up their minds to leave the party. Can he tie them down with a rope?

“If you recall, the governors had several meetings with their colleagues in Ebonyi, Cross River and Zamfara. When the market fire incident happened in Gusau, Zamfara State, APC governors donated N50 million but PDP governors donated N100 million, yet the governor still defected to APC. Why should you blame the national chairman for that? When the governors can’t stop their colleagues from leaving, what magic can the NWC do?

“I am appealing to the governors to fund the party. That is the way to constitute a serious opposition against a ruling party. Since 2019, the party has not received any fund from the governors, no monthly dues or whatsoever. How do they want the party to survive?” he asked.

Also speaking with Daily Independent, Chief Charles Idahosa, a foundation member of the PDP, said Secondus has performed creditably well and has the capacity to lead the party to the 2023 general elections.

He, however, said the problem in the PDP, especially between Secondus and Governor Wike, is a struggle between a godfather and his political godson, which, according him, was the same scenario that played out in the last governorship election in Edo State between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

“I think Secondus is up to the task of leading the party to the next general elections. He has done very well as the national chairman of PDP.

“I think the problem he has is the same problem we have in Edo State where you rely on a godfather to get to a particular position and the godfather wants to permanently have a hold on you. That is exactly what happened between Governor Obaseki and Adams Oshiomhole. That is what is happening to Secondus now.

“Secondus got to his position as national chairman because of the support of a godfather. What we are witnessing now in PDP is a fight between a godfather and a godson who wants his freedom”, he said.

Politics / Stop Lying To Nigerians On Security Matters, Saraki Tells Presidency by joyairemiya: 7:09pm On Jul 14, 2021
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has described as untrue a statement by the Presidency that the 8th National Assembly under his leadership did not organize any security summit to address the insecurity challenges in the country.

Saraki in a statement titled ‘8th Senate Did Organise a Security Summit At NAF Conference Centre on Feb. 8 and 12, 2018’ and signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu, Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) Abubakar Bukola Saraki Media Office said those representing President Muhammadu Buhari must ensure their facts are based on truth and not falsehood.

“The Media Office of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the immediate-past President of the Senate, notes with dismay the claim contained in the seventh paragraph of a press statement released on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 and signed by Mr Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity) in which President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted as saying that “he tried very hard to get the 8th (National) Assembly to do same (organise a security summit) for the sake of the country “and I didn’t succeed much. But time has proved me right”.

“The President was said to have made the claim while receiving the report of the National Security Summit held on May 26, 2021 by the 9th House of Representatives from Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila.

On a matter as sensitive and important in the scale of constitutional responsibilities of the legislature as security, it will be irresponsible of us not to state the true situation concerning the claim by the Presidency. We need to inform the general public that the 8th Senate, without any prompting from the Presidency, organised a well attended two-day Security Summit on February 8 and 12, 2018.

The Security Summit was organised by the ad-hoc committee of the 8th Senate on the Review of the Security Infrastructure headed by incumbent Senate President, Dr. Ahmed Lawan who was then Senate Leader and it held at the Nigeria Air Force Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja. The Summit was declared open by the incumbent Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Also, the leadership of the armed forces and other security agencies were all present at the closed door deliberations.

After the report of the Summit was adopted by the Senate in the chamber, the 20-point recommendation was officially forwarded to the President for consideration and necessary action.

The Media Office of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki is constrained to make the above clarification for posterity sake because we have noticed the recent trend in which some sources deliberately push out false narratives aimed at shifting blames and passing the buck arising from the security and other challenges confronting the country on the 8th National Assembly. We urge discerning members of the public to always take their time to properly check the veracity of the claims contained in such narratives.

We believe that facts are sacred and opinions are free. Therefore, we urge those in charge of representing the views of the President to the public to always check their facts very diligently and ensure that such reports are based on truth and nothing but the truth.
