Politics / EFCC Writes Secondus, Invites PDP National Officers For Investigation by joyairemiya: 9:42pm On May 18, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited three national officers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for investigation for alleged criminal conspiracy, abuse of office, diversion of funds and fraud.

The letter dated May 17th 2021 and addressed to the Prince Uche Secondus, the party’s National chairman asked the National Auditor, National Organising Secretary and Director of Finance to report at the EFCC headquarters from May 19th to 21st 2021.

It will be recalled that Prince Kassim Afegbua, a chieftain of the PDP and former Commissioner for Information in Edo state had petition the EFCC, asking the anti-graft agency to look into the financial transactions of Secondus, in the spirit of transparency, accountability and book-keeping in line with the existing anti-corruption laws.

He noted that much of the financial transactions of the PDP under Prince Uche Secondus has been shrouded in mystery, accusing the leadership of deliberate attempt to shortchange the party in the build up to the 2023 general elections.

Politics / Ibori : Malami Being Manipulated By British Government , Says Group by joyairemiya: 3:11pm On May 13, 2021
A socio-political group, Rescue Nigeria Economy Project, on Wednesday, said the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, is being manipulated by the British Government over the repatriation of £4.2 million allegedly seized from former Delta state governor, Chief James Ibori.

The group, in a statement by its Executive Secretary, Dennis Alamu- George, also asked the Minister to stop sounding like a broken record and desist from its propaganda and futile attempt to distract Nigerians from the failings of their government.

A faction of the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, had written the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, requesting that the funds be used exclusively in Delta State.

Replying the UPU, Malami alleged that Ibori was stalling the repatriation of the confiscated funds through a suit he had brought against the confiscation.

The group said the British High Commissioner knew that there is an ongoing litigation on the matter, yet went to Malami promising a return of the money and even dictating to him the projects the money should be executed with.

The statement reads: “We are surprised at the naivety Mr. Malami has demonstrared so far on this particular issue. He is being manipulated by the British Government and he is too naive to know that. His gullibility is so appalling to say the least.

“The British High Commissioner knew that the litigation was still ongoing in the UK Courts before she went to Malami to do song and dance.

“Having followed the matter closely and noticed Mr. Malami’s incessant statements on the Ibori saga, we strongly believe that their aim is to continually put the issue in the media for propaganda purposes”.

“If Mr. Malami thinks he can divert the attention of over 200 million Nigerians from the worsening insecurity challenges in the country and the failings of the government in general, then he is just fooling himself. He is already sounding like a broken records on this.”

Politics / Why Obaseki Wants PDP Exco Dissolved, Ex-Edo APC Chair, Ojezua As New Chairman by joyairemiya: 6:26am On May 13, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The crisis rocking Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is centred on moves by Governor Godwin Obaseki to ensure his own man becomes the state chairman of the party, Daily Independent has exclusively gathered.

Chairman of Edo State PDP, Anthony Aziegbemi, had on Tuesday petitioned Prince Uche Secondus, the PDP national chairman, to stop Governor Obaseki from carrying out his alleged plan to dissolve the state executive.

After an emergency and expanded State Working Committee meeting at the weekend, Aziegbemi and Secretary, Hillary Otsu, resolved to petition the national leadership of the party on the need to stop dissolution of the party Exco.

The aggrieved Exco that said if Obaseki wanted to harmonise PDP in the state, as he claimed, it should start from his office, also demanded replacement of the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, and Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, with original PDP members.

Credible sources, who are knowledgeable about the rift between the governor and the Edo State PDP executive led by its chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, said the governor wants the current executive dissolved and a new election conducted, a position the PDP leadership in the state is vehemently opposed to.

According to them, Obaseki who is not comfortable with the present PDP leadership in the state is desirous of having Anselm Ojezua, former All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Edo, as the new PDP chairman in the state.

Ojezua, a fiercely loyal supporter of Obaseki defected from the APC to PDP in December 2020 with over 150,000 members. He cited loss of confidence in APC national leadership and alleged disobedience to the party’s constitution as his reasons for leaving.

Speaking with Daily Independent on Wednesday, one of the leaders said Obaseki who is now the leader of PDP in Edo State by virtue of his position wants his men to be in charge of the party affairs.

“Yes, the governor wrote to the PDP national leadership asking for a dissolution of the current executive and a fresh election to be conducted. The reason he gave was that there were too many factions in the party.

“But the truth is that the current PDP leadership led by Aziegbemi knows that if a fresh election is to be conducted today, they stand no chance of returning because whoever is the candidate of the governor will win. From feelers we are getting, Governor Obaseki wants Anselm Ojezua who stood by him through thick and thin in APC and has even joined him in PDP as the new chairman of the party (PDP) in Edo State.

“From the look of things, the governor is gaining the upper hand, because key leaders of the PDP in Edo such as Chief Tom Ikimi, Mike Oghiadomhe and Charles Idahosa are on the same page with him,” our source said.

Efforts to confirm the development from Governor Obaseki proved abortive as our correspondent gathered that he is yet to appoint a media aide since his reelection.

Also a message sent to him was not replied to as at the time of going to press.

However, speaking with Daily Independent, Chief Charles Idahosa confirmed that the PDP faction loyal to Governor Obaseki has written to the national body of the PDP to dissolve the current Exco and conduct a fresh election in order to allow for harmonisation of the various factions.

He said Aziegbemi and other members of the Exco are free to contest again if they so desire.

Giving reasons for their decision, Idahosa said all the APC members who joined the PDP with Governor Obaseki, including himself, were shut out by the PDP members.

He said, “Since we joined PDP, we have been having problems. All the people that came with us from APC are not holding any position. They said they already constituted their Exco, but what about our people that came? In other words, I, Charles Idahosa, cannot produce a councillor in my ward. The governor from Ward 4 in Oredo cannot produce a councilor because the delegates that will choose councillorship candidates are all PDP.

“No person that came with Obaseki from APC to PDP can have any political ambition to be anything. That is why we are saying let’s harmonise. Funny enough, this thing has a precedent.

“Obaseki is not the first governor to leave APC for PDP. When Aminu Tambuwal left APC for PDP in Sokoto, they said you are the governor, you are bringing us power. The PDP gave him 60-40 sharing formula. That is 60 percent of the executives from the ward and they will take 40 percent.

“The same thing happened when Samuel Ortom left APC for PDP in Benue. But in the case of Edo, they are just greedy. They did not come with a single House of Assembly member. Out of the 18 local government areas in the state, they did not come with a single chairman. Out of the 192 wards, they did not have a single councilor and these were the issues I raised at that meeting.

“All these people came with Obaseki from APC to PDP. But Obaseki said we should carry everybody along and we said okay. At the end of the day, they are still refusing to let our people in and they keep saying we will bridge the gap.

“We on our part said, let’s harmonise. If it is 60-40, 70- 30 or 55-45 sharing formula, let’s agree. You can see the lame excuse they are giving. They are talking about SSG. Yet, this same people will come to Government House and say we are not interested in SSG and Chief of Staff positions because they are personal to you.

“Now the governor said I want to form a cabinet, how do I do it? Chief Ikimi now said, if we say 60-40 sharing formula, if the governor takes his 60 percent, how are we going to share the 40 percent, because we have factions?

“In my local government area, the PDP has three factions. One single person will just handpick all the party executives and the rest will be looking. So, we said enough is enough! We are going to write to the national leadership because the governor of the state by the PDP constitution is the leader of the party.”

Politics / Lai Mohammed: I Did Not Blame Murtala Mohammed For Spate Of Insecurity by joyairemiya: 7:31pm On May 11, 2021
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the media report that he blamed the regime of Gen. Murtala Mohammed for spate of insecurity in Nigeria is “fake news and disinformation’’.

The minister said this on Tuesday in Lagos during a meeting with Online Publishers.

Mohammed who expressed dismay over the reports clarified on what he said when he recently featured on Channels Television’s News programme.

“It is amazing at times how people interpret ones’ opinions and views in a very negative sense.

“What happened was that, the lead speaker at a Town Hall Meeting we held in Kaduna recently, made reference to the retreat by the former military Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, after the civil war.

“He said that at the end of the retreat, there was consensus that all children born after the civil war must be given free and compulsory primary education.

“I simply elaborated on this information and said that if subsequent governments after Gen. Gowon had perfected this pledge, the bandits and kidnappers today will have no market to recruit their followers.

“I said we have about 13 million out of school children and if successive government had taken the decision at the Gowon’s retreat seriously, we will not be where we are today.

“There was nowhere I blamed Gen. Murtala Mohammed, but we are in the era of disinformation and fake news,’’ he said.

The minister said he was also misunderstood on his position that kidnapping and banditry were not offences that could be prosecuted by the Federal Government.
https://thenationonlineng.net/i-did-not-blame-murtala-mohammed-for-spate-of-insecurity-minister/

He said while his position was correct, it was not meant to absorb the Federal Government from the responsibility of fighting crimes as it was misinterpreted by some people.

Politics / Alleged Coup: Nigerians May Not Believe Buhari’s Government Again — Yakassai by joyairemiya: 5:59am On May 10, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, on Sunday said the statement by the presidency of an alleged plot to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is uncalled-for, saying Nigerians may not believe them again if they continue making such statements going forward.

The presidency, last week, said there was an alleged plot by some Nigerians, working with foreign elements, to overthrow the current administration.

However, speaking with Daily Independent, Yakassai, a former presidential adviser to the late President Shehu Shagari, said if it is indeed true that the presidency has concrete evidence of a planned coup, what it should have done is to swing into action by arresting and prosecuting the masterminds instead of issuing statements. He said, “I read the news where they said they are aware of a conspiracy to overthrow the president".

"This is a very serious issue. What I expect from the presidency is not a statement of this nature because there are so many statements like this in the past. I think it is time for the presidency to act.

"If they continue making statements without acting, people will tend not to believe them in the future and it will be disastrous for the country if the citizens cannot trust their leadership".

“This time, I think the government should let actions speak louder than words. Let them arrest those who are scheming to overthrow the government and arraign them before the court of law".

That is more credible and helpful for the country than making these statements which may make people brand their statements as ridiculous in the future”.

Also speaking on calls by some Nigerians on the Federal Government to convene a national conference, Yakassai said that the government should concentrate efforts on implementing reports of past conferences.

While noting the 2023 general elections is less than two years away, he said convening another conference now will amount to waste of time and resources and it may negatively affect the forthcoming general elections. “There are many national conferences that we have had even before the one of 2014.

"I wasn’t happy that former President (Goodluck) Jonathan who initiated the 2014 national conference did not find it necessary to issue a White Paper and accept which part of the conference that the government accepted and which part they will reject".
If we had done that, we would have gone far by now.

“There is no need for another conference when the recommendations of the previous conferences were not implemented. You can’t keep on holding conferences and making recommendations which are not implemented.

"I will prefer the government to take the report of the previous conferences, pick each one they consider appropriate and implement them rather than holding another conference".
