Politics / 2023: Gov Bala Mohammed’s Presidential Campaign Posters Flood Kano by joyairemiya: 3:39pm On Jun 28, 2021
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has joined the presidential race ahead of 2023 general election.
His campaign posters are already out in most of the states in the north including Kano.
Mohammed’s posters are the latest in a series of presidential campaign posters on major roads and structures in Kano.

Kano, one of the politically most influential states, because of its population, is being flooded with many campaign posters of presidential hopefuls.

Among the presidential posters that have flooded Kano are those of the APC National Leader Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, among others.
The Nigeria Patriotic Youths for Bala Mohammed 2023 claims to be the sponsors of Bala Mohammed’s campaign posters, but sources said the governor’s campaign organisation is behind the posters, which carry the inscription: “To move Nigeria forward 2023”.

Some of the posters were pasted on flyovers, roundabouts and monumental buildings, among areas.

The posters were seen on trees in Gadar lado, the flyover at Zaria road, Club road, Zoo road, Dangi roundabout and Court Road.

Politics / Defection: Zamfara Gov Matawalle Free To Decide His Political Future – PDP by joyairemiya: 9:46am On Jun 28, 2021
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Monday said it has exhausted all its mechanisms to persuade Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle to remain in its fold and resist the overtures of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

It, however, said the ultimate choice on which side of the divide to belong ultimately rests with the governor as he alone can decide the political future he wants to chart for himself.

Matawalle will be formally received into the APC on Tuesday by the party leaders led by Governor Mai Mala Buni, who is the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, also disclosed yesterday that Matawalle has agreed to join the APC.

He wrote on his official social media handles “So Zamfara is back home. Welcome, Matawalle”.

When contacted, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary who had earlier said that the party will ensure all it can to make Matawalle see reason to remain in its fold, however said having done all they can, the ultimate decision lies with the governor to make.

”As far as we are concerned, every organ of the party have spoken with on the need to remain in the PDP on whose platform he became governor of Zamfara state but the final decision is for him to make.

”You will recall that the governors went to see him, party leaders have spoken with him, the National Working Committee also met and spoke with him. So, we have played our part, he has the final decision to make.”

Speaking earlier, a top PDP chieftain in the state who asked not to be named had said the governor is ‘already technically in APC but waiting for formal declaration to join the fold’.
“I can tell you that His Excellency Governor Matawalle is 80 percent in APC as we speak. If you look at the events that have played out in the past few weeks and you are a good political analyst, you will know that he is physically in PDP but his mind and body are in APC.

“Recently, like his counterpart in Cross Rivers who defected to APC few days ago, Governor Matawalle has not attended any PDP meeting in the last couple of days. He has only been sending representatives. Also, if you look at the dissolution of the cabinet carried out by the governor and few other actions taken by him, then it is safe to assume that his defection to APC is fait accompli”.

Politics / Fresh Crisis As PDP Suspends Former Lagos State Chairman, Segun Adewale Aeroland by joyairemiya: 7:31pm On Jun 21, 2021
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter on Monday suspended a former state chairman of the party, Otunba Segun Adewale aka Aeroland for one month.

Adewale’s suspension was announced by the Chairman of the Alimosho Local Government Area of the party, Alhaji Solagbade Abbas.

In a statement made available to Daily Independent, the party said it took the decision to suspend Adewale following the recommendation of the Executive and Disciplinary Committee of Ward M1 in Alimosho LGA.

It also said that the former PDP chairman is suspended for one month with effect from Monday, June 21st pending the resolution of all issues concerning him before the committees.

The statement reads “This is to inform the general public that, following the recommendation of the Executive Committee and the Disciplinary Committee of Ward M1, Alimosho LGA, Mr. Segun Adewale (Aeroland) has been suspended from all activities of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a period of one month with effect from Monday 21st June 2021, pending the resolution of all issues concerning him before the committees”.

“It is expected that all party members concerned will remain disciplined and law abiding, and cooperate with the various committees; while the party assures all concerned of fairness, equity and justice”.

When contacted, Adewale dismissed his suspension, saying as a South-West leader, the PDP in Allimosho lacks the power to suspend him.

The PDP leader who described who accused Adedeji Doherty of being the mastermind of the suspension also described those who suspended him as moles in the party.

He said their tenure will soon expire and he will ensure they are not returned to office for another term.
“Just ignore those people. I am a South-West leader of the party so how can they suspend me? These people are APC moles who are making money from both PDP and APC. I was the one that fought for them to occupy their present position”.

“ Their tenure will expire in two months time and they know I will ensure they are not returned back to office. So, the only option available to them is to claim that they have suspended me but they are making a big mistake”.

“I am a South West leader. If you want to suspend me, the paper will go to the South-West chapter. But the South-West chairman, Taofeek Arapaja knows what is going on in Lagos. So, the suspension cannot work”.

Politics / Anxiety, Intrigues In APC As National Convention Date Remains Uncertain by joyairemiya: 6:51am On Jun 21, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

*Tinubu Not Losing Grip, Says Ex-Senator

Leaders and chieftains of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are worried that the much anticipated national convention of the party may not hold anytime soon following the vote of confidence passed in the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) by governors elected on the platform of the party.

Kebbi State governor and chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senator Atiku Bagudu, while addressing newsmen last week had said the caretaker committee had performed creditably well by reinvigorating the party at a critical time .

“The vote of confidence is imperative to encourage the leadership of the party to continue its strides in piloting her to its next level. It will be recalled that the CECPC of the party under the leadership of Gov. Buni was put in place to strengthen the ruling party in the face of some challenges.

“The Yobe State governor and his CECPC members have succeeded in attracting serving and former governors, senators, House of Representatives members as well as other notable opposition figures to the party. They have also helped in stabilising the APC and midwifed a successful membership drive to make the party the biggest in Africa,” the governors said.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that many of the party members, especially state chairmen felt that the endorsement by the governors was to extend the tenure of the Buni-led caretaker committee by another six months, a situation many of them who have been clamouring for a substantive National Working Committee (NWC) are not comfortable with.

The caretaker committee had few days ago rolled out time table for the conduct of party’s congresses from the ward to zonal levels. The time table was, however, silent on date of the national convention of the party.

A time-table which was released, but later withdrawn indicated that ward congresses would begin on July 10, while local government congresses would follow on August 6, 2021. State congresses were scheduled for September 3 and zonal congresses for September 30, 2021.

The Buni-led caretaker committee which first came into office in June 2020 following the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led NWC was charged with the responsibility of reconciling aggrieved members of the party and organising a national convention.

However, the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) in December 2020 extended the tenure of the Buni-led CECPC which will lapse this month end.

Our correspondent also gathered that even if the national convention will hold, the APC governors who are already comfortable with one of them as the caretaker chairman will want the trend to continue by ensuring that they determine the next national chairman.

When contacted, a member of the CECPC, who does not want his name in print, said it is wrong for anyone to assume that the vote of confidence passed by the APC governors in the Buni-led committee is an endorsement aimed at extending their tenure.

“The vote of confidence by the APC governors in the CECPC is just an act of solidarity and nothing more. The governors are just showing solidarity with one of them (Buni) who has been effectively combining his work as caretaker chairman with his position as governor of Yobe State”.

Also speaking with Daily Independent, a former senator from the South-West, who spoke on condition of anonymity, dismissed the allegations that the governor can on their own determine the next national chairman of the party.

“The governors are powerful and influential, no doubt. Naturally, they would want to influence the choice of the next chairman but they can’t solely determine the choice”.

On the claim that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the party’s national leader, was losing grip, he said, “I doubt if that is true. Most of the governors who are with Asiwaju are still with him. And these people, whether you like it or not are in charge of their party structures in their respective states.

“Unless the governors who are with him dumped him, then the issue of Asiwaju losing grip of the party structure or his influence waning does not arise.

“He has more northern governors on his side than southern governors. If you notice the crowd that welcomed him in Maiduguri when he visited, those in charge of the party in the state made it possible. Borno is one of the states with Asiwaju till date
”, he said.

Politics / Tinubu Healthier Than Most Youths Complaining About His Health Status- SWAGA by joyairemiya: 9:30pm On Jun 15, 2021
Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, the Southwest Agenda for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (SWAGA) has cautioned those politicizing the health status of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos state, saying they should not be playing God who alone can give health and long life.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Senator Dayo Adeyeye, coordinator and chairman of the group said Tinubu in his bid to attend to all his visitors, sleeps at 3am everyday and wakes up by 10am, adding that most youths complaining about the health of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader lack the capacity to do so.

He added that Tinubu will not desire to aspire for the highest political office in the land if he knows his health capacity cannot carry him.
Citing the example of President Muhammadu Buhari, Adeyeye said some people critising the president over his health status have died while he (Buhari) is still alive.

“Asiwaju’s issue is not strange to him. He laughs over most of these things people say about him. You don’t want to be President and everybody says that you are a saint. No! They talk about his health. Do you know his health more than him? If he thinks he is not capable, will he come out?”

“Do you have his medical report? There are some people who are talking about Buhari’s but they have died now while Buhari is still alive. Nobody should talk about anybody’s health; health is given by God. And a man who wants to become president, if he doesn’t think he is healthy enough, he will not go for it. So, it is not for you to come out and politicise another person’s health”.

“Asiwaju doesn’t sleep until 3am and he is up by 10am. Most of us who are not up to his age cannot do it. He has been doing that for over 15 years. We always beg him to go and sleep but he will say he wants to attend to everyone before retiring to bed”.

“There are some young men who will spend their time doing disco party, chasing after women and drinking excessive beer and wine. Is that the kind of people we want as our president? “

Politics / Buhari Deserves Blame For Worsening Insecurity, Not State Governors -Masari by joyairemiya: 1:44pm On Jun 15, 2021
Katsina Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari on reasons for worsening insecurity in the country.

The president had during a television interview last week attributed the menace to failure of states and local governments across the country to manage security issues in their respective domains.

But citing Constitutional provisions, Masari said it was wrong for anybody to blame states and local governments.

“It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to ensure protection of lives and property of citizens in all nooks and cranny of the country. When you look at the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the issue of security is under the Exclusive List. So, it is the responsibility of the Federal Government and states can only complement and that’s what we have always done and are still doing.

“From the local governments, we assist the police, the DSS, the NSDC. There may be states that do not complement efforts of the security agencies and perhaps those are the states that the president was referring to.

“But sincerely speaking, based on provisions of the Constitution, the blame should go to the Federal Government for the general state of insecurity in Nigeria.”

Masari said he was 100 per cent in support of the clamour for restructuring and devolution of more powers to states which should also entail enhanced revenue to the tiers of government to enable them adequately perform their constitutional roles.

According to him, the establishment of a state police would enhance general security as the personnel will be expected to perform their defined roles without infringing on duties of the Nigerian police.

“The issue of a state police is part of what we are talking about and I am for it. All we need to do is to formalise activities of the vigilance groups and community policing and give them clear definitions on their limits and those of the Nigerian police.

“We have the Nigerian police and the NSDC that we currently support their operations and nothing stops a state police from coexisting side by side with the Nigerian police.

“The issue of security is actually the responsibility of everybody as we all have roles to play. It’s not about the president or the governor or local government chairman or a legislator or minister.

“These bandits and their informants have addresses. They live within the communities and the people know them and security has no colorations in terms of political party affiliations or religion.

“I am also 100 per cent for restructuring and devolution of powers or whatever you call it. If you devolve, states and local governments will have more financial independence. We should earn resources according to the size and economy of our states.

“During the First Republic, Emir of Kano was the highest paid because of the state’s revenue base. What we have today as Katsina State was a province made up of Katsina and Daura emirates. They ran their civil service and police and prisons and judiciary then were under the Native Authority and they did well.

“They built and managed schools. If it was done successfully then, who says it cannot be done today? We ought to take another look at the Constitution. With the right leadership and proper arrangement, these things are still possible.

“There are some federal ministries with so many parastatals under each one. How can one person as minister provide effective oversight for these parastatals?

“We should devolve more power to the states but in such a way that we don’t have to weaken the authority of the Federal Government in terms of performing its constitutional responsibilities.”

Politics / June 12 2020: Day Oshiomhole Almost Murdered Democracy In Edo by joyairemiya: 6:43am On Jun 14, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

June 12 is Nigeria’s Democracy Day. As one of the most memorable days in Nigeria’s political history, the day was set aside by the Federal Government to celebrate Nigeria’s return to democratic rule. Even though the official handover date by the military to a civilian democratic government was on May 29, 1999, President Muhammadu Buhari decided to move the date to June 12 in order to highlight the importance of the presidential election held on June 12 1993, which formed the basis for Nigeria’s democratic governance today.

Though the election, which was won by Bashorun MKO Abiola, then candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was described as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, it was to be annulled by the military junta and that singular action plunged Nigeria into chaos.

According to an analyst “The essence of June 12, therefore, is to remind Nigerians of the pitfalls of the past, the mistakes of the present and the need to uphold the tenets of democracy”.

However, it appeared the lessons of June 12 was lost on Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Last year, while Nigerians were celebrating Democracy day on June 12, 2020, Oshiomhole, riding roughshod in his capacity as APC’s number one officer, masterminded the disqualification of a sitting governor in Edo, Godwin Obaseki from participating in the APC’s governorship primaries. That action led to Oshiomhole’s political downfall, which he is yet to recover from till today.

Owing to the disagreement between him and his erstwhile associate Godwin Obaseki, Oshiomhole, a former two-time governor of Edo state was determined that Obaseki whom he handed over to in 2016 will not be reelected as governor of the state. To carry out his plans, he persuaded Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who was the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state during the 2016 governorship election to decamp to the APC. His belief was that Ize-Iyamu, a grassroots mobiliser will use his popularity coupled with the fact that the APC was the ruling party in Edo to win the election.

With Ize-Iyamu now in APC, Nigerians were looking forward to a keenly contested governorship primaries in Edo since the incumbent governor, Obaseki is also seeking reelection on APC platform. However, Oshiomhole has other plans. First, he ordered that the Edo APC primary will be by direct method, which allows all party members in the state the right to select their candidate. The Edo APC, led by its erstwhile chairman, Anselm Ojezua and Governor Obaseki kicked against this method, saying it wants the indirect method. They cited the need to be cautious due to the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic but Oshiomhole insisted on direct primaries. He however approved indirect primaries for the Ondo governorship election, which comes up three weeks after the Edo governorship election.

The then national chairman said “We have since published our time table because, under the law, we are required to give INEC at least 21 days’ notice to monitor our primaries and to state the mode of our primaries and of course NEC has approved direct primaries for Edo. That of Ondo has not been discussed because that will come much later, because Edo will come about three weeks before Ondo.”

Determined to stop Obaseki at all cost, Oshiomhole, who was running a one-man show in the then APC National Working Committee (NWC) set up a seven-member screening committee headed by Professor Ayuba Jonathan-to screen aspirants seeking to contest under the party’s platform.

Shortly after appearing before the panel for his screening, Obaseki while addressing journalists expressed fears that he may not get justice since Oshiomhole was the “judge” in the case.

He said; “The last time I came here, I asked that Oshiomhole recuse himself from the process in the interest of peace and justice. But as a party man, I have had to go through the screening like everybody else.

“Since he is the judge and the jury in this matter, I will just wait for the outcome of the screening. I have given them all the information they need; the controversial certificate from the University of Ibadan has been tendered. Like I said, as a party man I had to go through the screening process but I do not believe that I will get justice because Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is an interested party in the Edo process.

“One of the questions asked was why did I issue a gazette that will prevent the party from performing direct elections in Edo. That did I not see it as an anti-party activity? I just felt that if we put politics above the lives of the people of Edo State, we may be missing the point”.

At the end of the exercise, the panel disqualified Governor Obaseki from contesting in the party’s primaries. Also disqualified were Matthew Aigbuhuenze Iduoriyekemwen and Chris Ogiemwonyi. Those cleared to participate in the primaries held on June 22 were Osaro Obazee, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Dr Pius Odubu.

Announcing the outcome of its screening on June 12, the panel said the decision by both Obaseki and Iduoriyekemwen to drag the APC and the national chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to court in defiance to the provision of the APC constitution as the basis for the decision.

The panel particularly picked holes with the National Youth Service Certificate (NYSC) and the testimonial of the Institute of Continuing Education Benin city submitted by Governor Obaseki.

While ratifying the decision of the panel, Oshiomhole claimed that fragrant display of executive rascality was among the iniquities committed by Obaseki, which led to his disqualification from participating in the party’s primary.

Oshiomhole, while itemizing the grounds of his disqualification from participating in the primaries, quipped that apart from the credibility doubt on the certificates he presented, he displayed executive rascality through his actions against the legislative arm.

According to him; “We have reviewed the two reports and note with satisfaction that all members of the committees were unanimous in their decisions. We had deliberately appointed men and women that are, in our judgement, not only knowledgeable in academic world but also in law, what our party, APC, stands for and our ideals”.

“But, let me also reemphasize one other thing that it is not about certificate alone but also things beyond our control. The committee reminded us that they have a petition which drew its attention to the fact that in Edo State, contrary to the provisions of our constitution, the governor had managed the state disenabling the legislative wing of the state House of Assembly by inaugurating the house with nine members out of a House of 24 members.

“It is unacceptable in a democracy that the executive manipulated and completely disenabled the legislative arm. Let me amplify what the committees noted that even the President had intervened on this matter when he asked me to advice the IGP to ensure that illegal House is compelled to inaugurate every member in accordance with the provisions of the law and traditions of parliament”.

“But the governor obtained a court order to stop the police and DSS from carrying out this instruction, which I dully communicated to the IGP and the DSS. The Senate president also intervened on this matter and he confessed to the fact that he inaugurated the House without circulating the proclamation letter to all the members elect. Yet went ahead to inaugurate nine person, leaving out 15 persons”.

“The efforts made by the senate president to have a peaceful solution, including assuring the governor to anoint whoever he wants as Speaker, he remained adamant. He went ahead to obtain a court order restraining the senate president, another one restraining the entire senate and yet another restraining the House of Representatives.

“The NWC subsequently set up a reconciliation committee of governors chaired by Governor Umar Ganduje, but he equally obtained a court order to retrain them from embarking on the mission.

“He has also asked the Speaker to declare the seats of the 14 APC House members elect vacant and invited INEC to conduct fresh elections. These, in the views of the committee and on reflection by the NWC, we accept intoto that this is the height of abuse of power. Our democracy is founded on a tripod of executive, judiciary and the legislature.

“When a governor decides to muscle the legislature then democracy is dead because it is inconceivable that in a democracy, particular in a party that prides itself as a progressive party that Edo state is run by the executive without the benefit of a properly constituted parliament. In addition to other iniquities and contradictions that bother on forged documents and other inconsistencies, the NWC accepts the recommendations that Godwin Obaseki will be ineligible to participate in the forthcoming party primaries in Edo state,” he claimed.

Dissatisfied, Obaseki found solace in the then major opposition party in the state, PDP. Against all odds, he secured the party’s governorship ticket and squared up against Ize-Iyamu who was the APC flagbearer.

Secretly backed by some APC governors who were piqued with the manner one of them was treated shabbily, he went on to win the election held on October 10 and has since commenced his second term journey.

Shortly after securing victory in the Supreme Court, Oshiomhole, who was removed as APC national chairman even before the governorship election, congratulated Obaseki and urged him to be magnanimous in victory.

He said “Congratulations on your victory at the Supreme Court which has effectively laid to rest all matters arising from the last election. As I had repeatedly reminded you during our several meetings, our relationship has through the years developed beyond being friends to being brothers of different parents.

“Whatever happened is unfortunate and I believe God has a reason for everything. I have put all behind me and moved on. As I have consistently advised, please be magnanimous in victory. You are the governor of all Edo people regardless of political leanings”.

Politics / Buhari’s ‘Sit There In Lagos’ Statement: Gafar Olakanmi Reacts by joyairemiya: 8:40pm On Jun 10, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The Presidency on Thursday kept mum over the statement by President Muhammadu Buhari where he mentioned that it is unacceptable for someone sitting in Lagos to decide the fate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on zoning for the 2023 presidential election.

The President in an interview with Arise TV had said the party will be the ultimate decider on whose zone will produce his successor in 2023 and not someone sitting in Lagos.

“You cannot sit there in Lagos, for instance, and decide on the fate of APC on zoning. Therefore we should allow the party to decide.”

Many commentators on social media believed he was referring to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos state and National leader of the APC.

“Of course, he is referring to no other person than Tinubu. Why mention Lagos out of the entire 36 states and Abuja?. You need to see the anger in his face when he said that” Gafar Olakanmi, an APC member in Lagos said.

When Daily Independent contacted Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant, Media and Publicity to the President and asked if the President was referring to Tinubu, he paused and then promised to get back to our correspondent.

“I will get back to you. Hopefully, I will get back to you soon” he said.

Calls made by our correspondent to his line hours later were not answered.

Politics / Herdsmen Attacks: Nigeria Will Face Food Crisis Next Year – Senator Utazi by joyairemiya: 8:32pm On Jun 09, 2021
Temidayo Akinsuyi, Lagos

The senator representing Enugu North senatorial district in the National Assembly, Chukwuka Utazi has raised an alarm that Nigeria will face serious food challenges next year as farmers are unable to go to their farms due to attacks by killer herdsmen.

Speaking on Channels Television programme ‘Politics Today’ monitored by Daily Independent, Utazi the insecurity crisis in the South East will be reduced to the barest minimum if urgent action is taken to arrest killer herdsmen who are moving about with AK-47 and are killing innocent citizens.

He said the people of the South East have now agreed that state police will go a long way in addressing the insecurity challenges as governors are powerless to perform their roles as chief security officers owing to the present unitary system which supports central policing from Abuja.

He said: “You have to look at the issue of these people moving about with AK-47 and killing our people. Beyond that people are saying we want state police. Before many people didn’t agree but today, it is a common issue for us in the South East and even in the southern part of Nigeria. We want state police so that we can help".

“Now, you find that governors are chief security officers but they are not in charge. We have look at all those issues and we have come to the conclusion that it is very important that we have state police in the southeast to help us tackle the insecurity challenges.

“Today, many people cannot move to their farms, not to talk of kidnap for ransom and banditry and all that. we must disarm these herders moving about with AK-47 so that we can be civil and be able to discuss with our people. If we don’t do so, things will become difficult.

“Next year, we are going to face a lot of challenges in terms of food security in this country because many people cannot farm.

“This is farming season in my area but how many people can go to farms? They are not going anywhere and we are here speaking grammar and talking politics. We have to look at these issues and solve them once and for all.”
