ehissi: Well!!
When you start issuing IQ tests let me know. I'll be happy to surprise you any given day.
For the record, aside from Reverend Kings case and another one, as far as the first 2 sets of arrests of judges were concerned. All the cases bribes were involved, where election related cases and not National security cases.
DSS uses its sweeping powers under the Security act - which clearly states the duties of the DSS - to arrest people all in the name of National security.
The problem with that act, is that unless the case(s) are directly linked to National security - and not indirectly like your assumed case scenerio depicts - it has to be assented by Mr President himself before it goes through or is approved.
Sting operations like the one allegedly used by the DSS, costs money. Its not free, and that is also an important reason why DSS can't go running around arresting/investigating people over issues that are not a direct threat to National security.
But DSS made a fool of itself when it alleged that the entire sting operation was as a result of a petition sent by one fellow who leads a collation of civil society groups and not Mr President. This I guess was in response to comments that the President is operational responsible for DSS and sent them to arrest the judges, as a way to spite/attack the Judiciary for not allowing him to do as he pleases in court with his poorly handled anti-corruption cases.
The petition alleged corruption and not National security, plus the last time I checked the leader of the CSNAC wasn't the president of Nigeria. He doesn't have the power to make them investigate Basket mouth, let alone sitting Supreme court or High court judges.
The right thing DSS should have done, is to refer the case to EFCC. The problem is that EFCC cannot arrest people without an arrest warrant - in the manner that the DSS did - and that's why Buhari used DSS just like he did for Dasuki. DSS did the gorund investigation using search warrants and their sweeping power - in the name of Nationao security - while EFCC prosecutes.
The problem is that it involves judges and NJC must be involved. Fundamentally, it involes the ethics of Judges with special regard to cases they handled. If a man breaks public propert and he is a judge, do what is required by law.
Its no biggie, but as far as Nigerian law is concerned Ooh; only NJC can deal or recommend disciplinary action to judges with respect to ethics in handling court cases.
Let no man deceive you Oooh, in the absence of proper reference/recommendations of the NJC on their arrests/arraignment, no Judge in the whole country is qualified to sit over the cases as presented by DSS.
DSS can't even arraign/prosecute them. That why the entire press jingle they are doing over this case is just stupid, pointless - aside from shoring up political capital that is expendable in the next elections by Buhari - it can't secure a conviction.
And what good my over-smart, over-intelligent friend, is a sting operation that doesn't lead to a conviction??
Its as useful as the first tissue paper used to wipe the first crap that came outta my asss the first time I took a crap as a baby.
Did I hear you say election cases have NO national security tangent? Again I recommend another IQ test, elections are of serious national security importance. I hate it when extremely ignorant people make statements in public. This is the definition of National security "noun The safety of a country as managed through the exercise of economic and political power, intelligence agenciesand diplomacy." Is DSS an intelligence agency? YES, hence it is her prerogative to use sting ops to gather intelligence /evidence against the accused. Political power is sought through the ballot aka elections in a democracy how can an educated individual not know this? Abiola's election destabilised our internal security, 2011 presidential elections destabilised our internal security to the extent that the Secretary of state of the United States was in Nigeria twice to witness the peace pact signed by the election actors in 2015 to forestall a recurrence of 2011 incident. Use your freaking brain or donate it to charity. |

ehissi: "The actions of the suspected judges border on national security. We are talking about huge corrupt practices and national security that are beyond the mandate of the EFCC and the ICPC.
“If we talk about democracy — from the conduct of election to election rigging; issues of foreign investments; economy and other issues that have to do with our national security, they all end up in courts. So anybody or institution that tries to undermine that institution is toying with the national security of our dear nation.’’
I no talk am??
Nairalanders I no talk am??
I say very soon, them go use their powers dey claim National security.
Corruption cases, election rigging etc don turn to National security, simply because know the only leeway/legal right or option they have to arrest the judges, without an arrest warrant is based on National security. Them don call am National security.
Bet it, Na EFCC go prosecute these cases in court, just like they did to Dasuki and Saraki initially.
DSS go form investigation, abusing their statutory powers and call any case they get involved in a matter of National security. Arrest people for no just cause, then when they hand over the folks to EFCC or ICPC for prosecution.
So that if a judge sitting over the case, issues an order, it will be binding on only the prosecuting counsel and not the investigators. (In the case of Dasuki, EFCC is the prosecutors while DSS are the investigators).
As Court don give order to EFCC, concerning Dasuki, FG go use DSS violate am for background. EFCC go do like say, them no know wetin judge dey talk for court.
Unfortunately, you chose to do this to Supreme court Justices and Principal officers of the Judiciary as well and just like the internet, the Judiciary never forgets.............. some of you need serious IQ test before making comments, your interpretation of the paragraph you quoted, shows that there is a fundamental flaw in your ability to process simple information. A terrorist suspect is a threat to National security, the fate of the same terrorist suspect is decided by the courts headed by judges. If a corrupt judge is induced to deliver a bias judgement, the judge automatically becomes a threat to national security by complicity. |

Politics › Re: The Solution To Nigeria's Inflation By Henry Boyo by jpphilips(op): 8:52am On Oct 09, 2016 |
Bevista: The Naira that the CBN throws into the economy is simply a "transfer". For instance, the CBN sells $1b to Dangote Refinery and collects N320bn, which it then gives to FAAC. This is simply a transfer or recirculation of Naira from one economic agent to another. This does not increase the Naira in the financial system.
This point (source of Naira) is important as this can help debunk or validate Boyo's inflation theory.
Nigeria's inflation comes from quite a number of factors outside CBN monetization. Firstly, corrupt public officials have access to stupendous CHEAP money which they then use to chase the few goods and services. Secondly, we are becoming less and less productive, and more of a consuming nation. When more funds are deployed to consumption rather than production, inflation is bound to go up.
Sadly, the current inflation is not demand-pull, (since we are in a recession). It is rather Cost-push, caused primarily by the high exchange rate. Being an import-dependent country, a high exchange rate means that the cost of imported goods will go up. Their market prices will, thus, follow suite causing higher inflation.
The problem in Nigeria is that we usually have lazy Fiscal authorities, who usually fail in their responsibilities thereby leaving the monetary authorities (CBN) to carry its cross. It is the job of fiscal authorities to articulate and drive a clear industrial plan. It is their job to provide infrastructure. It is their job to promote and facilitate agriculture, solid minerals, etc. However, what they do instead is to loot the treasury and flood the system with cheap money (especially during campaigns/elections), only to leave the inflation mess they have caused for the CBN to clean up.
Most of the excess liquidity Boyo is concerned about is not caused by CBN, but rather corrupt politicians and public officers. I agree with you completely on the exchange, I think Boyo has a point as regards the "Timing" of such exchange, why must it happen on a monthly basis? shouldn't the dollar cert kinda delay the exchange for a while such that goods will remain competitive with money supply? Dangote does not need $1b every month neither does our importers, there should be a priority list and a delay mechanism for non essential imports if the naira must gain value. |
Politics › Re: The Solution To Nigeria's Inflation By Henry Boyo by jpphilips(op): 9:39pm On Oct 08, 2016 |
Bevista: This is the premise on which most of Henry Boyo's analysis and suggestions are based upon.
However, I do not think that the CBN prints/creates new Naira to give to FAAC (FG & SGs) every time they (CBN) receive dollar revenue from oil sales. If that were to be the case, there would be a ridiculous amount of "new" Naira pumped into the economy every month which would lead to hyper inflation and an even more terrible exchange rate.
What the CBN actually does is to sell the dollars to importers (i.e. exchange the dollars with existing Naira) and use the Naira receipts to give to FAAC. So, basically, the Naira the CBN gives to FAAC every month is not newly created money but rather already existing money that has been mopped from the financial system by exchanging dollars for it. You took the writer off context he said, "prints or creates" the take home point is that one way or the other, the CBN source the equivalent of $1b in naira and throw it into the economy on a monthly basis. The source of its naira equivalent is not in contention, so dont miss the point. The CBN then sell TBN to mop up the excess liquidity, how does doing the same thing the same way produce a different result? |

Ipobdevil: The Community Court Of Justice, ECOWAS (Economic Community Of West African States) is a regional body charged with the responsibility of resolving cases of alleged human rights violations. The court has jurisdiction to address cases involving an alleged failure by a Member State to comply with Community law; which followed the adoption of protocol A/SP1/12/01 on Democracy and Good Governance.
Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, and his defence team have dragged the Nigerian government to the ECOWAS Community Court Of Justice on the grounds of gross abuse of human rights and judicial process.
Recall that admist Nnamdi Kanu's continued and illegal detention, the judges that have previously presided over this case had granted him (Nnamdi Kanu) bail on 19th October 2015 and ordered for his unconditional release on 17th December 2015 at the Magistrate Court and the Federal High Court respectively.
Owing to these, the Community Court Of Justice, ECOWAS, will sit to hear Kanu's case and give her verdict. ECOWAS court is set to uphold justice and enthrone the rule of law to sustain public confidence with court rulings which has been rendered witless by the Nigerian government.
According to Article 15(4) of the ECOWAS Treaty, judgement of the Court is binding on all Member States. More to this, Article 19(2) of the 1991 protocol provides that the decisions of the Court shall be final and immediately enforceable.
Non-compliance with the judgment of the Court can be sanctioned under Article 24 of the Supplementary Protocol of the ECOWAS Treaty. The judgment of the Court must be fully and effectively implemented. Owing to the intolerance to violation of human rights by Ecowas court, information reaching Biafra writers has it that Buhari is in panic and struggling to find a way from preventing justice from being served.
Today, the 5th October 2016, the world's attention will be drawn to the ECOWAS Court, the Court of Justice is ready to maximise these powers vested upon her to ensure peaceful co-existence of people's in this Western coast of Africa. Biafrans around the world are hopeful that the Community Court of Justice, Ecowas, will redeem the already damaged image of the judiciary system in Nigeria. Nnamdi Kanu will get justice and Buhari's manipulation of Nigeria's domestic judiciary will be crushed. ECOWAS fed by Nigeria? yawns!! next!! |

magicminister: Lets do the maths
according to air-usa.com/aircraft, alpha jets consume 190 gallons/hour
190 gallons = 719 Litres/ Hour
Since the military claims they us 1.9 million per month, the number of hours would be = 1,900,000/ 719 = 2, 643 hours.
We have 24 hours in a day; so for us to determine the number of "days" flown in a month, it would be 2,643 hours/ 24 hours = 110 Days/ Month.
In order to determine the number of flights per day, we divide 110 days/30 days = 3.66. APPX 4
IN ORDER FOR THE MILITARY TO UTILIZE 1.9 MILLION LITRES OF FUEL PER MONTH ON ALPHA JETS, THEY HAVE TO ATLEAST MAKE 4 FLIGHTS A DAY. EACH FLIGHT HAS TO BE NOTHING LESS THAN AN HOUR BUT NOT MORE THAN 2 HOURS.

Politics › Re: Buhari’s Economic Policies Are Foolish – Financial Times UK by jpphilips(m): 2:43pm On Oct 04, 2016 |
skyhighweb: The Financial Times UK has described the economic policies of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration as the ‘height of foolishness’.
The leading international business publication in an article by Steve Johnson, the deputy editor of the Financial Times, said the economic policies of the Buhari administration is doomed to fail because it is tailored after Venezuela’s exchange rate policy and China’s failed equity market strategy.
The article faulted the circuit breaker on the Nigerian stock exchange which pauses trading for 30 minutes if stock prices fall 5 per cent and will cease for the day if it is triggered twice in a session, or after 1.45pm.
It noted that this month, Beijing abandoned a similar policy after just four days, stating that in a falling market the existence of the circuit breaker encouraged more selling as traders rushed to exit while they could.
Quoting John Ashbourne, Africa economist at Capital Economics, it said: “It is hardly confidence-inspiring that Nigeria is copying a Chinese policy that is widely seen to have failed.”
See the full article below: Nigeria plans to create a $25 billion fund with public and private financing to modernize infrastructure and avoid a recession.
Copying Venezuela’s exchange rate policy and China’s failed equity market strategy might seem the height of foolishness.
But, at least in the opinion of John Ashbourne, Africa economist at Capital Economics, that is precisely what Nigeria, the continent’s largest economy, has just done.
“Low oil prices are battering Nigeria’s export- dependent economy, but it’s the government’s market-distorting response that risks pushing the country into a Venezuela-style crisis,” Mr Ashbourne says.
“Nigeria is sliding towards a Venezuela-style FX regime and adopting a Chinese-style stock market circuit breaker. Neither will reassure foreign investors, many of whom seem to be eyeing the exits.”
Both measures were announced after markets closed on Friday, January 15.
The circuit breaker on the Nigerian stock exchange, one of the worst performing in the world this year with a fall of 17.7 per cent, will pause trading for 30 minutes if stock prices fall 5 per cent. Trading will cease for the day if it is triggered twice in a session, or after 1.45pm.
This month, Beijing abandoned a similar policy after just four days, concluding that in a falling market the existence of the circuit breaker encouraged more selling as traders rushed to exit while they could.
“The effect is akin to calling last orders at a crowded bar,” Mr Ashbourne says. “It is hardly confidence-inspiring that Nigeria is copying a Chinese policy that is widely seen to have failed.”
He accepts that Nigeria’s circuit breaker may not be as badly designed as the Chinese version. Whereas the NSE All Share index rarely falls by 5 per cent a day, the Shanghai Composite did so a dozen times in 2015. The NSE’s version has not yet been called into action.
Nevertheless, Mr Ashbourne says that using a circuit breaker to shore up the market, rather than to avoid volatility, is “deeply flawed”. Simultaneously, the central bank has said it will stop selling US dollars into the interbank FX market.
Nigeria has operated a de facto twin currency system for the naira since February 2015, when the bank held the official interbank rate at N199 to the dollar to avoid a spike in inflation. The unofficial rate, available at bureaux de change, has plunged to N300/$, as the first chart shows.
However Mr Ashbourne argues the latest move takes Nigeria a step along the road to a Venezuela-style scenario, where the dollar now buys 913 bolívars on the black market, according to dolartoday.com, compared with an unofficial rate of 6.28/$.
“Suspending US dollar sales to the interbank market will force consumers and firms to source dollars at bureaux de change,” he says, while providing an implicit subsidy for companies and individuals with the connections needed to access the official rate.
As the second chart shows, Nigeria’s reluctance to let the naira’s official exchange rate weaken means it has borne the brunt of the sharp fall in oil prices since the middle of 2014.
In naira terms, the oil price has fallen from $115 a barrel to around $35, with the modic** of weakening permitted so far doing little to take the edge off the fall in oil prices to $28 in dollar terms.
In contrast, Russia, which has allowed the rouble to fall sharply, is still seeing oil prices of around $65 in local currency terms, with many other oil exporters such as Brazil and Azerbaijan also seeing more cushioning of the blow than Nigeria.
Charles Robertson, chief global economist at Renaissance Capital, who drew up the second chart, expects Nigeria to bow to the seemingly inevitable and devalue the naira, given that his calculation of fair value is N305/$, very close to the current black market rate.
He notes that frontier market funds are now underweight Nigerian equities, and believes that international investors “are likely to remain on the sidelines,” barring an obvious catalyst for change.
Nevertheless he believes a devaluation to N250/$, “while no longer sufficient to ease all dollar shortages … would be good enough to warrant investors taking a fresh look at Nigeria, especially if they expect a rebound in the oil price”.
Daniel Salter, global equity strategist at RenCap, has been busy analysing just when equity market investors should consider returning to a freshly devalued Nigeria, if history is anything to go by.
Mr Salter analysed 13 emerging market currency devaluations since 1994 in countries ranging from Mexico and Turkey to Egypt and South Korea.
His conclusions are that it is rarely worth buying in anticipation of a currency devaluation and that, on average, equity markets do not hit their low point (in dollar terms) until 99 days after the start of the currency devaluation.
This delay can vary significantly, though, as the final chart shows. In the case of South Korea in 1997 the stock market troughed the day before the won started to fall. In Nigeria itself, in 2009, this point was reached after 35 days.
However in the cases of Thailand (1997), the Philippines (1998) and Egypt (2001), it would have paid equity market investors to stay out for at least six months.
Mr Salter believes the lag is due to two factors: the initial devaluation is often insufficient to stabilise the currency; and that devaluations frequently coincide with banking crises.
Unfortunately, this analysis probably tells us little about how Nigeria’s equity market is likely to behave in the year after any devaluation.
In the 13 previous episodes, the stock market typically fell 3 per cent in dollar terms in the three months after the start of the devaluation. However, as the above chart shows, there has been huge variability in this figure, from -56 per cent in Mexico in 1994-1995 to +100 per cent in South Korea in 1997-98.
Likewise, on average the typical stock market gained 4 per cent in dollar terms in the year after the devaluation, but once again this is the average of a widely dispersed data set, with the returns ranging from -86 per cent (Indonesia, 1997-98) to +172 per cent (South Korea).
The sector breakdown perhaps delivers a clearer message. RenCap found that consumer staples stocks have tended to outperform in the 12 months after the start of a devaluation, while consumer discretionary companies and industrials tend to pick up once the currency has bottomed.
Financial stocks, in contrast, tend to be the worst sector in the year after a devaluation, probably due to declining credit quality.

mordsith: The first bomb has been dropped on the Niger Delta region. This is the first act of agression against us and they fired the first bullet. The herdsmen aren't bombed, illegal gold miners in the north are not bombed......but our brothers are bombed.
When Obasanjo bombed Delta south he was met with stiff resistance. We shouldn't cower in our shadows. Today it was them tomorrow may be you.
I call on all Niger Deltans not to sit on the fence. The war has begun and you have to rise for your lives and of those you love.
The world should remember .........WE DIDN'T START THIS WAR Your mumu has no other part |

Funny how all these rejected, useless, corrupt and incompetent losers developed half backed common sense now, but had non and developed zero common sense when they were part of the same crooked and corrupt system and bad management responsible for our problems today....
Where was he when his friend jona was borrowing hundreds of billions to pay workers salary and to loot and share?
Where was he when jona was was borrowing money for projects they later abandoned all over the country?
You really can not take these clowns seriously.. You sincerely blame obi for Jonathan's buffoonery? as his father or what? sometimes I wonder whether your likes hired their brain on hire purchase. PDP is sure a terrible party, but Peter Obi did great for Anambra, that is a fact you must write on your forehead to bed tonight. |

Zonacom: According to Obi, Anambra has the best road network in Nigeria. I can't say if i agree with this or not cos I've not travelled the whole of Nigeria. But isn't it shameful that commuters in this state with the best road network find it very hard to travel from Onitsha to Enugu on a road that is perhaps the most important in the state? Some will shout federal road, but obi couldn't do anything about that road by his virtue of being very close to the president for years. So shameful. Even Obi is not worth any trust I think it meant rural road network, Anambra rural roads are quite impressive under Obi, I can't say for now |

PapaBrowne: One of the things he pinpointed that went off the radar is that this government would be borrowing 4.4 trillion naira this year alone to finance it's budget.Question is what would that money be used for. It is the highest budget deficit in the history of Nigeria. The deficit alone is bigger than some Previous budgets. Why do you think some governments run budget deficits? |
