Orkpekyandega: Marginalization Of Tiv People At The Federal LevelMarginalization Of Tiv People At The Federal Level; A case study of the Nigerian Military
By Stephen Orkuma
When I saw the list of candidates that were admitted into Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), I laughed. In their orchestrated effort to crush the spirit of the Tiv people, they have ostracised them of all political appointments at the federal level and now they have extended the exclusion to the Military. This is where they got it wrong and they will regret it in the next few years. The success of an army in war depends on the mind of the soldiers. An army of 1000 cowards cannot stand an army of 100 brave men. The Tiv people are natural warriors:
It was not a fluke that the invading jihadists of 1804 to 1808 were crushed by the Tiv people after they conquered the Hausas and Nupes. It was not a fluke that the Tiv people were the last ethnic group in Nigeria to be conquered by the British. Unlike the expedition in the Benin Kingdom by the British troops in 1897 where the Bini Empire was conquered, three times the British troops came with their gun power in Tiv territory; three times they were crushed by local fighters. It was not a fluke that after the British used religion to win the Tiv over, they went ahead to recruit most of them for the First World War. It was not a fluke that the Tiv people supplied the highest number of men in the Western Frontier Forces that fought on the British side in the Second World War. It was not a fluke that a Tiv man, Col Joseph Akahan (The first Chief of Army Staff) mobilised the Nigerian troops for the civil war; a war he died in. It was not a fluke that the Tiv people supplied the highest number of men to fight on the Nigerian side in the civil war. It was not a fluke that the only officer that was able to stand the firepower of Col. Achuzia of the Biafran rebels was Col. Philemon Shande, even when other officers like Col. Olusegun Obasanjo ran away. Col. Philemon Shande was the only Colonel in the Nigerian army that died in the war. It was not a fluke that Gen. Victor Malu ended the war in Liberia. It was not a fluke that Gen. Gabriel Kpamber ended the war in Sierra Leone. It was not a fluke that Major Gideon Orkar refused to mention the names of the soldiers that took part in his revolutionary activity when he was arrested. He died gallantly as a true soldier. It was not a fluke that Lance Corporal Kenneth Kulugh was decorated with a Purple Heart medal by President Mohammadu Buhari for his bravery against Boko Haram. While his colleagues took to their heels when they were attacked by Boko Haram in Adamawa State, he alone crushed the terrorists. Unfortunately, he is presently in a wheelchair due to the bullet wounds he sustained from the attack. It is not a fluke that Seaman Amaseimogha Paul of the Nigeria Navy saved the life of his colleagues after stepping on a landmine by alerting them to steer clear as far as they could go. He died while detonating the explosive. And the list goes on…..
So if Nigeria like they should continue playing politics with the Nigerian Army by injecting cowards and preventing real soldiers from joining. Last year, a General in the Nigeria Army commanding Bama took to his heels immediately he sighted the ragtag Boko Haram army. Some other soldiers also cowardly refused to fight. Let me ask this simple question: Have you ever heard that a Tiv man ran away at the battlefront or the heat of war?
In terms of warfare, the Tiv people are the comparative advantage Nigeria has over other countries. They are natural warriors but the powers that be are trying to stampede them by drastically cutting down the number of Tiv boys that want to join the Nigerian Army.
The country is shooting itself in the foot because when “e set all cowards go take off run”.
.........Culled from a friend's Facebook page. The dark side of Tribalism is that it takes away ratiocination and leaves you with the mental sagacity of a near imbec!le. Col Olusegun Obasanjo was the Man who captured and beat Achuzie to pulp. col Shande like you said died in the hands of Achuzie or in an attempt to capture him, what kinda ridiculous thought process assigned heroism to Shande, are you guys naturally dumb or the spirit of daftness is hovering over Nigeria of late? Maybe if you had any education to study operation Barras, you may be lucky to understand how the Liberian conflict ended, contrary to your clownish claims. Irresponsible people, tribe before nation. |

The Undisputable Facts;
**Since January 2016, the Nigerian government never paid a kobo in subsidies, the DSDP and the improvement in local refining gave birth to cheaper petroleum products and the government made an over recovery within the period.
**The government did not remove any subsidy because there was nothing to remove, they only lied to appeal to familiar rhetorics. The truth is that the government lost its capacity to provide products due to incessant bombings in the Niger delta. The last subsidy paid by this administration to the tune of 46b naira was a backlog from the previous administration to enable the marketers take over from the Governmnet. The take over exposed importers to the Forex uncertainties and the price was hiked to accommodate the marketers interest, so any day you buy PMS above 86.5 naira, blame it on the creek !d!ots bombing everywhere.
** Jonathan Operated a similar regimen to the DSDP called the OPA, while he was at it, we neither made over recovery nor did we have cheaper products, so what happened to our oil they took? as if it wasn't bad enough stealing our oil, we paid subsidy on stolen oil. OPA must be investigated for Nigerians to know the truth about the economic cankerworm called Goodluck Jonathan |

Abagworo: An indigenous firm, B.G Technical Limited, has opened the first Pipeline, Pigs and Accessories Factory in West Africa. The factory is expected to conserve and generate foreign exchange for Nigeria especially at this period of meagre oil revenue, as it would help provide quality products for the maintenance of pipelines so as to prolong life span and reduce cases of pipeline rupture as well as leakages. With the factory commissioned, it will bring an end to the importation of pipeline pigging products, boost availability of quality products and help preserve foreign exchange earnings for both operators and the federal government. The commissioning of the factory in Owerri, Imo State was performed by the Acting Executive Secretary of Nigerian Content Development Monitoring Board (NCDMB) who was represented by Tunde Adelana. Adelana who is the Director, Monitoring and Evaluation at NCDMB, said the opening of the multi- billion Naira pipeline, pigs and accessories factory for the production of quality pigging pipeline products is yet another evidence and validation that the efforts of the board is paying off in real terms in the oil and gas industry. He described the event as another attestation to the fact that Nigerians can develop the required industry capability once the enabling environment is in place and assured that the board will continue to support B.G Technical and other local companies in their efforts at acquiring additional capacities. “The opening of the factory is indeed worthy of celebration. Looking back at the years of pre-NOGICD Act, investors like B.G Technical would probably not be able to compete in the area of pigging services due to the preponderance of foreign goods and services,” he said.

Politics › Re: Nigeria Is Deeply Divided - UN Report by jpphilips(m): 9:30am On Sep 05, 2016 |
timosky1: The UN has described Nigeria as a “divided society on the basis of the plurality of ethnic, religious and regional identities that had tended to define the country’s political existence.”
This was made known to the public during a consultative meeting on the formulation of the UN Development Assistance Framework IV (UNDAF IV) for the South-East geo-political zone in Awka.
The report noted that for decades, different segments of Nigeria’s population had, at different times, expressed feelings of marginalisation, of being short-changed, dominated, oppressed, threatened, or even targeted for elimination.
The report also painted a gloomy picture for the country as most of the development and social indices in Nigeria recorded much below acceptable standards.
It noted that the major challenges facing Nigeria were constraints of economic growth and social development and lack of good governance.
https://www.unitednaija.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Barack_Obama_chairs_a_United_Nations_Security_Council_meeting-696x464.jpg
Part of the report read: “Nigeria is one of the poorest and most unequal countries in the world, with over 80 million or 64 per cent of her population living below poverty line. “Poverty and hunger have remained high in rural areas, remote communities and among female-headed households and these cut across the six geo-political zones, with prevalence ranging from approximately 46.9 per cent in the South-west to 74.3 per cent in North-west and North-east.
“Nigeria’s economy is currently in a recession and it is estimated that government revenues have fallen by as much as 33 per cent, which has further resulted in the contraction of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 0.36 per cent in the first three months of 2016.
“The vulnerable macroeconomic environment in Nigeria is affecting investors’ confidence in the domestic economy.” The report also revealed widespread cases of violence against women and girls, including physical and sexual assault, even as it noted that 42 per cent of Nigerian youths were unemployed. “Nigeria faces humanitarian and emergency crises of considerable proportions fueled by a combination of factors including climate change, inter-communal conflicts and violence, insurgency, recurring floods, heavy handed tactics of security forces in combating crime and insurgency.
“The overall consequence is the situation of systematic and chronic internal displacement that has given rise to different humanitarian crises that include the most egregious and dehumanising human rights abuses,” the report stated. The report however noted that transforming and diversifying Nigeria’s development paths needed a radical and new approach.
It recommended investing in people and in a strong more dynamic and inclusive productive informal sector.
Last week, the UN regional humanitarian coordinator, Toby Lanzer rated the growing humanitarian crisis in Borno as being at level with that of war-torn regions across the world. Lanzer gave the sad rating during a visit to Bama, the largest Borno town to come under the siege of the Islamist militant sect, Boko Haram.
“Having worked in Darfur, Chechnya, and South Sudan, this is about as bad as it gets,” Lanzer was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund has warned that if timely aid is not availed, 49,000 children will lose their lives in Nigeria’s North-east region.

TheGoodJoe:
The Challenge With the Yuan deal is that it will take us losing some of our reserves and our reserves right now is a bit $25 Billion. We can not take that risk now until things settle.
I think we need to invest more in small scale productions training. Things like Starch, Toothpicks and cotton buds. Others of similar level.
Train and sponsor people to establish small scale industries here. We already have the market here. This will create employment and ease the pressure on the dollars in our reserves. You will not lose your reserve if you go the yuan route, CBN knows how much dollars is requested for every commodity in our economy because they are the ones that settle balance of trade. If the Chinese imports in the economy is $1b, only $1b will be exchanged while the rest of the reserves are kept in tact, since the dollar is of a higher value than the renminbi, the trade volume of moving from $ to Yuan will increase!!
The reason I think it is put on hold is because the FG is trying to stimulate Local production hence anything that encourages cheaper imports will be conflict of interest.

chronique: It's a very dicey situation. There are 2 key components: injecting cash into the economy, and stabilizing the value of the naira. If you inject cash into the economy without arresting the free fall in the value of the naira,it will amount to pouring water in a basket. As a businessman,I've come to understand that the major problem right now,is that the purchasing power of most Nigerians, has shrunk. We are paying double or almost double the price,we were paying for most commodties and services, whilst still earning same salaries or less than we were earnng before. It's a very scary situation. For things to stabilize, the naira has to peg at a stable value first, before anything else. A situation where you spend $1,000(400,000k) to bring in a product and value of naira drops and to get back your $1,000,you have to sell that product at 420,000k,and it continues like a circle,is not realstic and sustainable cos at the long run, businesses will eventually shut down when price can no longer be pushed to consumers(when buyers can no longer afford to pay for this steady increment with static or declining revenues). No amount of govt spending, can arrest this problem. That was the mindset of those Eastern traders who said that recession can not bite them afterall, they will push the cost to the buyer, I warned them that since the buyer is operating a fixed income, their is a limit to how much the buyer can take, are they not crying now? In as much as you did not proffer any solution, CBN's idea of curbing inflation is mopping up liquidity, that practise is stale and lame.
two factors are responsible for inflation, the Money and the goods, since we have tried money and it didn't work, why can't we try the goods? The Genesis of our inflation stemmed from forex shortages which discouraged imports, for a consuming economy like ours, we lost most of our goods in that process, once the goods disappeared, inflation set in.
Why should we be rolling out monetary policies to curb inflation when we can stimulate growth towards manufacturing? Doing the same thing the same way and expecting a different result is madness. Again, our whole Idea of manufacturing is Dangote, of course it makes economic sense to target him because he is big enough, however, We have gotten to a stage where we need to target other manufacturers in different sectors of the economy.
Accessible Cheap dollars for manufacturing is the panacea to this madness!! This strategy will curb inflation and provide employment at the same time. |
Politics › Re: Recession: How Can Nigeria Revive its Economy? by jpphilips(m): 5:06pm On Sep 02, 2016 |
trillville: Your plans, though commendable will not work. As government liquidates it's foreign reserves, currency traders will further push down the rates of the naira. The gap between the official, parallel and black market rates will only widen, increases the liklihood of nigerians indulging in round tripping.
People will take all sorts of risks to make easy money, I dey tell you.
The current ban on 41 items doesn't mean these items can not be imported. It simply means government will not sale dollars to importers of these items. In reality, most imported goods are on the banned list since it is extremely difficult to get forex to import anything.
A tariff will have virtually the same impact as this current policy; Raise the overall price of goods and services.
Like government increased the price of fuel and nigerians adjusted their demand for petrol and the queues disappeared, government needs to raise taxes and/or fire government workers to stabilise the price of the naira. Simple and short You can not make money from a commodity you don't have access to, government will not give $$ to anyone but will make it accessible to anyone that is a manufacturer, The 41 banned items on the forex list, have you checked their duty recently? |

[quote author=kahal29 post=49001023] How can Nigeria revive its economy? The Federal Government should pump money into infrastruture development, which will create more jobs and boost liquidity, economists and private sector players said yesterday. Where will the money to "pump" come from when Oil is at all time low and creek id!ots are contributing to production cut? Do you have some savings somewhere we can pump? Have you considered the inflationary consequence of pumping money in a consuming economy?
The only policy we need is what we did before the CBN went gaga, we need to create a forex pool for local manufacturers, lower forex for manufacturers will push in goods into the economy and inflation will be defeated, Mopping up liquidity to combat inflation is one methodology that has proved to be ineffective.
The only challenge here is round tipping forex which is easy to solve, the dollar issuing agency will not issue dollar to anyone but will only make it accessible to their suppliers that way, the dollar must be fixed at 200naira to 1usd. Where will the dollar come from? part of our Forex reserve must be liquidated to fund this cause. A sustained manufacturing capacity will solve both inflation and unemployment.
Secondly, if the Government can, they should bail out failing companies whose labour contribution are significant

According to minerals act (1993), every mineral resource belongs to the federal government. Injustice is glaring. Stop quoting what you don't know, common sense should tell you to copy and paste that section for all to read what you have been smoking. Land use act bestowed land "OWNERSHIP" on the FG but anybody and anything have access to lease agreements, what do you think C of O is used for? The mineral act bestowed Ownership on the FG but has provisions for licenses, it is there in section 1 part 1, BTW I quoted from the 1997 edition, I don't know about your 1993. The problem you have is that you are too lazy to understand that having resources does not put money in your pocket but making the necessary investments.
From the story we just read, these scavengers have a discovery, they can not even afford to make the least investment therein which is to get a company that will estimate the quantity of Gold there to know if it is of commercial value, no one will do that, they are stup!dly waiting for the government.
