tuale4u: Op u made some nice point. But i dont agree with Oil companies giving forex to BDC. I think the 300 naira to a dollar is a good tin that will spur local manucaturing.
But i will rather propose dat Oil companies give forex to Manufacturers Association of Nigeria ( MAN) for raw materials, intermediate goods and machinery.
And CBN must ensure d money is used 4 d purpose and not round tripped and sold in blackmarket. CBN is already supplying Forex to local manufacturers for raw materials procurement. Why do you think Nigeria Breweries and Guiness are yet to adjust prices? |

toliba1: This is not a solution but would create more problems for the economy. The problem we have is that demand is greater than supply in CBN, Nigeria imports virtually everything we consume and oil price has dropped from average of $110 to $30 . The government earns less and CBN has less foreign exchange to trade with. Total foreign exchange we earn is less than what is needed to finance import and Banks cannot provide enough dollar to manufacturers due to rationing by CBN because its self does not have enough. Manufacturers will have to source for some dollars in black market and the price of their finished Goods and services will have to go up for them to make profit. The quick solution is to pray for Oil price to go up international market and Government is able to quickly diversify the economy from Oil dependent (Mono dependent)to agriculture & other sectors. Cyojunior: Listen, a government is either capable or not; there is no middle ground. Nigeria is not going through anything it hasn't gone through before. The only difference is that when we went through this before, we had capable hands. . In 1998 when General Abacha died and General Abdulsalam took over. Abacha had stolen so much from national coffers that till date, we still don't know how much. But we know nobody has successfully broken his record. Still, when General Abdulsalam took over, he was able to increase the salary of the public service by as much as 300%, form INEC and fund them, keep the price of things from skyrocketting and reduce inflation rate from 29% to 9.5%. . In that same 1998, oil price had dropped from $17 to $13 in the international market. Still, it didn't stop the government from performing and from fulfilling its promises to its people. General Abdulsalam was in power from June 1998 to May 1999, but he was able to fulfil his promises and set the stage for a new and economically-stable democratic society. . Fastforward to 2015, there has been cases of massive looting under the Jonathan administration. Just like 1998, there has been a drop in oil prices. Instead of the government sitting up and solving the problems, it goes on a blaming mission and spends a whole year blaming the last administration. Oil price dropped from $148 to $38 per barrel under Yaradua. We never suffered like this then. . The fact that some graduates of Economics continue to defend the failure of this government by blaming the past administration, massive theft and drop in oil prices is an indictment of the Nigerian educational system. The fact that some 'public intellectuals' continue to use big grammar to justify the failure of this administration to live up to its hype is proof that having a mastery of the Queen's language is no guarantee that you will make sense with it. That some 'public commentators' continue to preach the gospel of 'we must endure before we enjoy' and 'I didn't vote a magician' only shows that having a browsing device, internet connection and knowing how to attract Facebook 'likes' and Twitter 'retweets' are not the same things as having common sense. . No nation is met perfect. No leader is without challenges. No leader agrees with all the policies of his predecessor. How the leader acts is what stands him out. You cannot turn a nation upside down and expect praises. Praise and respect are not given; they are earned. Those who continue to dole out cheap praises and 'stand with' an unperforming government only tell us how cheap they are and how low their expectations are. . The Buhari administration is an incompetent one. Until it proves otherwise, we continue to see it as that. And you suffering mortal that joins them to chant 'Sai Buhari' amidst economic hardship and national confusion, may you not die foolish. 1) 23% loss in oil price in 1998 can not be compared with an 80% loss in 2016 2) The size of the economy determines the pressure on Foreign reserve during balance of trade, I didn't see that in your analysis. 3) Population from 1998 to 2016 is a geometric progression, that was not accounted for in your analysis.
Over all, less than average, very poor analysis. |

Politics › Nigeria's Forex Shortages The Way Out!! by jpphilips(op): 3:39pm On Apr 08, 2016*. Modified: 3:09pm On Apr 12, 2016 |
It is no longer news that Nigeria is suffering from acute forex shortages as a result of declining commodity prices in this case crude oil. Several crude exporting countries of the world are equally in this fix not any fault of government but prevalent economic realities of our time. Iran, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait majorly OPEC nations and a host of non OPEC producers like Mexico and Russia are all in this current mess.
Background;
United states corporations invested hugely in research and development of Hydraulic fracturing and directional drilling in the last decade to have the capability to extract crude oil from difficult Shale formations, that saw a growth of 75% in US oil production. An increased production led to a glut in the oil market that eventually crashed oil prices. currently, United States is the biggest producer of crude oil in the world thanks to the Shale revolution. While it is great news for the yanks, it remains a disaster for middle east and African oil producers.
Where we got it wrong;
Nigeria has seen worse than what we are experiencing today during the Obasanjo/Yaradua, Shagari & Buhari's administration fortunately, we never felt the impact this badly because there were measures in place that immune the Nigerian economy from external shocks, for fair comparison, the Obj/Yaradua's era seem more appropriate. what are the Buffers put in place by the Obasanjo and Soludo's team?
1) Excess Crude revenue account; This account though controversial was opened by our economic custodians to ensure that earnings from crude sales above budgetary benchmark was not spent or shared, at the beginning of the crisis (Economic melt down), Nigeria had saved over $38b in this account.
2) Strengthening our Foreign reserve account; At the beginning of the crisis, this account had over $30b there in.
3) Paying off our foreign debts;
More foreign debt renders our budget useless because money that would have been used to finance developmental projects are paid to mostly foreigners who gave us financial assistance in the past. In the 2016 budget, 1.3T was earmarked for debt servicing out of the proposed 6T, it means that 30% of the national budget is lost to foreigners with no benefit to the Nigerian people. Obasanjo and his economic gang paid $12b to this effect.
People need to understand that Global Economic meltdown is worse than low commodity prices (low crude price), because low commodity prices affect only commodity producers who lack alternative sources of income while Economic melt down is a bubble that affect the Economy of the world (in layman's terms).
In low commodity prices like we are experiencing today, Nigeria can still borrow from other nations who are not directly affected by our tragedy hence institutions like world bank, AFB, IMF etc can still rescue to a great extent in such a situation, during Economic meltdown, the world's Economy will dip into recession slowing down most industrial activities, that will reduce demand for commodities (causing low commodity prices), it climaxed with lack of facilities because there is no one to borrow from, if you are lucky to find, the conditions are disastrous that Generations to come will remain in bondage, that was the reality of that era but Nigerians never felt it. Even though the crisis peaked in 2008, and Obj left in 2007, he left Soludo behind with Yaradua to continue the good job till 2009.
How did we save our Forex at the time? while importation was mounting its fair of pressure on the Foreign reserve, relatively cheap commodities and a huge balance sheet ensured the Naira remained strong, that was so till the peak of the crisis, Nigerian economic managers were forced to devalue the naira to 155/$, it may interest you to note that the buffer held on for 2.5yrs before we caved in. So long as the Naira remains strong, there will not be significant increase in prices of goods and services.
The Jonathan's administration;
With Jonathan, Nigeria witnessed the height of official kleptomania, our common wealth was pilfered, where it was too big to be stolen, it is outrightly diverted to pettiness and frivolities, those wasteful years have emerged as a cancker worm in our current reality.
Is it wise to blame jonathan for our Current economic woes?
[color=#000099]Absolutely!! if the Jonathan's administration provided a buffer for our economy, we would not be in recession now at the very least. Not that recession wont come, but it will not be so soon.
The sharing of the ECA was the climax of Jonathan's financial recklessness, the pressure from the governors intensified when it became clear that his 2011 elections was funded in part by illegal withdrawals from the ECA, an action that betrayed the trust long upheld from the Obasanjo's administration.
Is blaming Jonathan forever a good excuse like this current government is doing?
[color=#000099]Hell NO!!
The answer is simple, like we saw from the OBJ's era even though Nigeria paid off $12b to Paris club and launched a $16b ambitious power projects, OBJ's savings was still less than $70b, for a Jonathan who handled a bigger economy, bigger population, including Boko Haram (ObJ had militants who were economic saboteurs as well), you will agree with me that even if Jonathan saved same amount as Obj, Nigeria's import based economy would have exhausted it by second quarter of 2016. Beyond second quarter of 2016, it will be extremely f00lish for the present government to blame the previous government for not saving.
The current administration is severely incompetent in the area of information management and masses enlightenment. Perhaps most of us who have a grasp of what is going on will do our best to bring other Nigerians up to speed on the challenges bedeviling this economy.
While we have grown past the era of blame game, Nigerians must understand that our problem is not the Government neither is it coming from political parties (APC/PDP), our problem is rooted in Forex shortages as a result of declining commodity prices, this sounds like a phrase but it has a myriad of Economic consequences ranging from Energy shortages, to high transportation cost, to high cost of goods and services etc. This challenge is not the fault of neither PDP nor APC, Jonathan took the fall in 2015 because the endemic corruption in his government robbed us of economic buffers that would have relapsed this present suffering, note; the suffering is inevitable so long as commodity prices remain low. Even if you borrow the German conservative party or the United States democrats, Nigeria will not fare any better under this circumstance.
Forex shortages have proved to be the biggest enemy of the middle class, like in all recessions world over, it starts with Forex shortages, then, high cost of goods and services, energy shortages (fuel scarcity), blackouts, Unemployment, disappearance of essential commodities then eventual economic collapse, I don't think there is any index of a bad economy listed above that is not yet happening in Nigeria, that is proof enough that neither APC nor PDP is our problem, but the strength we fail to muster in our diversity, while eschewing Bigotry, nepotism and unpatriotism that breed sabotage that eventually worsens the current economic situation.
It is clear that oil sales alone can no longer sustain our balance of trade due to low oil prices, hence the parallel forex market that has become our new reality, a sign of a sick economy, the CBN has tried to maintain a positive balance of trade by restricting imports thereby pushing our economic machinery to Bureau de change operators who profit from our collective misery.
The solution I propose is this;
While the federal government continues seeking for new opportunities in a bid to diversify the economy, especially in the downstream sector,CBN should mandate all producing oil companies in Nigeria foreign and local to seek their Naira components from the black market.
The oil producing companies in Nigeria both local and foreign earn royalties and cost oil from the Nigerian government, this money is sent to their offshore accounts while a part of it for operational expenses are exchanged with local banks and domiciled with them. This current practice is no longer in the interest of the Nigerian economy and the Nigerian people hence the CBN must ask these companies to exchange their forex in the black market.
The reason I say this is because the dollar given to these companies are sourced from the CBN indirectly who give it to the banks at 196, this forex is now sold to these companies at a margin in the interest of the banks, that explains why Nigerian banks are churning out very huge profit in a recessive economy.
This is an economic cancer that must be removed. Remember that oil companies pay contractors (naira component), pay their worker's salaries, maintain infrastructures and provide logistics, all these are financed in part from the 40% royalty they earn from the Nigerian government in dollars.
Since the CBN is overwhelmed with financing Forex imports, it makes sense to allow the oil companies who earn Forex to become the driver of demand and supply in the black market, if this forex should get to the black market, Bureu de change operators will have more dollars than naira hence crashing the naira -dollar rate reasonably, the BDC will source for naira from co operative societies and even banks to be able to maintain their respective forex market share. In a week, the naira dollar exchange rate will crash to 200 naira to $1.
The Emeka importer, foreign students et al will now get his dollar at 200naira, when Emeka returns from China, India, or singapore, the price of goods and services will crash so will inflation crash. The government can utilize the cheaper dollars to strengthen the manufacturing sector through importation of machineries.
It will only take our collective will and resilience to make Nigeria great once again!! Constructive criticisms are highly welcomed

DedeNkem: Nigeria is number 8 oil producer in the world while number 1 in Africa and yet it's the ONLY country in the world that has an endemic fuel scarcity! Even non-oil producing countries don't have this problem!.
We produce crude, sell to other countries to refine (we have 4 refineries they purposedly let to rot) and then corrupt marketers import the refined product back to Nigeria, collect billions of dollars in "subsidy" from the government for nothing and hoard the fuel to inflate the price before selling it to the public!
This is the biggest legalized looting in Nigeria today. Repairing our refineries will ultimately end our fuel scarcity problem forever and make fuel price very cheap but the corrupt marketers and their corrupt political backers don't want this to happen. You are one of the reasons the Minister talks like a junkie, no matter how that man explains the situation, people like you who think towards ojuelegba will still form an absurd opinion, I think the man has read comments on the social media and has convinced himself that most Nigerians have mental problem hence his Junkie approach to press conferences.

Lest we forget. We are watching.
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/buhari-military-offensive-against-boko-haram-anti-north/149256/
Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) National Leader, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has criticised the declaration of state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States and the subsequent military offensive against the Boko Haram Islamic sect. Buhari, who featured on the “Guest of the Week,” a Hausa programme of the Kaduna-based Liberty Radio, yesterday said the federal government’s action was a gross injustice against the north.
According to him, unlike the special treatment the federal government gave to the Niger Delta militants, the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses demolished. He said he was not in support of the declaration of state of emergency in the three north-eastern states because President Goodluck Jonathan had failed from the outset in addressing the security situation in the country.
Besides, Buhari added that the security challenges facing the country started in the Niger Delta region where he alleged that politicians desperate to retain their positions as governors recruited youths and armed them to enable them win elections by force. According to Buhari, who fielded questions in Hausa language before the English version of the programme, “What is responsible for the security situation in the country was caused by the activities of Niger Delta militants.
“Every Nigerian that is familiar with what happened knows this. The Niger Delta militants started it all. What happened is that the governors of the Niger Delta region at that time wanted to win their elections, so they recruited the youths and gave them guns and bullets and used them against their opponents to win elections by force. “After the elections were over, they asked the boys to return the guns, the boys refused to return the guns. Because of that, the allowance that was being given to the youths by the governors during that time was stopped.
“The youths resorted to kidnapping oil workers and were collecting dollars as ransom. Now a boy of 18 to 20 years was getting about $500 in a week, why will he go to school and spend 20 years to study and then come back and get employed by government to be paid N100,000 a month; that is if he is lucky to get employment?
“So kidnapping became very rampant in the south-south and the south-east. They kidnapped people and were collecting money. “How did Boko Haram start? We know that their leader, Mohammed Yusuf, started his militancy and the police couldn’t control them and the army was invited. He was arrested by soldiers and handed over to the police.
“The appropriate thing to do, according to the law, was for the police to carry out investigations and charge him to court for prosecution, but they killed him, his in-law was killed, they went and demolished their houses. “Because of that, his supporters resorted to what they are doing today. “You see in the case of the Niger Delta militants, the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua sent an airplane to bring them, he sat down with them and discussed with them, they were cajoled, and they were given money and granted amnesty. “They were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the north are being killed and their houses demolished. They are different issues, what brought this? It is injustice.”
Buhari also explained why he joined politics after his release from detention by former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, saying that his close associates and those who knew him very well convinced him to join partisan politics.
He said those who knew him, knew that he took on positions of responsibility without begging anyone for appointments. “I was a military governor in a state that has been divided into six states today; I was minister of petroleum for four years and six months. I was a military head of state. That link is not opening try harder |

franciskaine: Hmmm, we sure need a long term solution. Fix our refineries and stop the importation of petrol. If building refineries is too expensive, let the FG borrow and build and then sell them off. I personally won't vote for Buhari if by 2019 Nigeria still imports fuel. Nigeria has a comparative advantage in crude oil extraction and production, and that we must maximise for our benefit not the other way round. Maximizing that advantage should be the focus of the whole economic diversification not the stup!d agriculture and BOI madness that is flying around. FG should focus all their lean resources on buying off at least 30% of Dangote refinery after which it will acquire an oil field (already developed with reasonable reserves) then construct a 1mbbls refinery, we should fund it for the next four years consistently, it will create the so called jobs the BOI is grappling with and put us back on the path of energy sustainability.

Kachikwu should go for leadership training, he is smart no doubt but he has no depth in information dissemination, look at that press release and tell me if it makes any sense.
First, you don't have strategic reserves so no shock absorbers for any supply shortfall, what are you doing about it?
Second, PPRA will have to increase pump price not to reflect eventualities in the global crude price like you claimed after all, crude price is dipping further, but the fact that you are returning the marketers you sacked previously since it has dawned on you that NNPC can not maintain supply 100%. It was not a mis calculation on your part because you hoped that the refineries will supply 40% while NNPC imports 60% a capacity you thought was sustainable not till miscreants in the creek bombed off the two refineries feedstock lines thereby squashing your plans for 40%.
You have tried 100% supply last month and you have realized how disastrous it turned out and now you have returned the marketers who will present unrealistic margins that will attract another form of subsidy, the least of it being exchange differentials, once the CBN delays their forex requests, they are gonna source it from the black market which will soar their subsidy demands so you must brace for this challenge.
You intend to bridge the margin by increasing pump price, that will have serious political consequences because nobody will listen to increased price at a lower crude price.
Again, if the CBN continues to supply forex to them, it will mount serious pressure on our balance of trade and I tell you it is not sustainable which will bring us back to the circus where we started. Our only chance of having import availability with less Forex pressure is implementing the DSDP you proposed two months ago, I did not read when it is going to be implemented.
This half half information is not helping the image of this administration, you need to talk to Nigerians like kids because these PDP urchins are not far from m0r0ns. |

And yes there is room for naija productivity to grow as well.

Alqeada metamophised from a terrorist group into an Idea, an Idea that laid the foundation from ISIS, Bokoharam,Al nusra, Al shabab ......Believe me, the worst thing to fight against is an Idea, you can kill a person but the Idea would spread an live on in other people... Mujahadeen was not led by Osama bin laden, you know very little about what you think you are discussing, help yourself by shutting up for good!! |

podosci: The double standard of the west is so irritating... The screem about human rights when it favours them, they screem dictatorship when it favour them, they screem corruption when it favours them. The worlds terrorism problem was started by them, they were the once who armed and trained Alqaeda to fight the soviets, they armed and trained ISIS to fight Al-Asad...they destroyed libya completly.....they accuse china of spying when the CIA and NSA does far much more..... One day the oppresors would become the oppresed Because Mujaheddin received training to resist Russia occupation means the west laid the foundation for terrorism? So because the Nigerian army officers receive training at Sandhurst, they are free to become terrorists right? where are thy brain oh ye Nigerian youth? |

Let me get it straight, PDP is asking Buhari to prosecute Tinubu, who will PDP prosecute when they get to power? But I thought the corruption fight was not working according to PDP, why are they expecting Buhari to deploy a tool that is not working? Where was Tinubu residing in the last 16yrs any idea? |
Politics › Re: Khalid al-Barnawi Arrested By Nigerian Army - BBC by jpphilips(m): 3:33pm On Apr 04, 2016 |
rajeto: Everyday,we arrest,we capture,but how come,the Acting GOC of 7 Div.was mobbed by unhappy 154 and 155 task force soldiers at a boko harams enclave in a village with mine all around the military unfriendly territory, these frustrated soldiers,without Basic Arms and Ammunition,no water,no food for days now,they can only get supplies by airlifting,this can also happen to our fighting force again? after one year of a re brand democracy called change? The GOC was airlifted into hostile zone, instead of him to promised them hope of supplies and re enforcement,he went running his mouth with threat of discipline.so Nigeria Army still lack BASIC operations equipment? Airlifting troops into Sambisa seems like a smart strategy because the roads leading to the area are riddled with landmines, no doubt US donated some MRAPS to us, I doubt if it is enough to deploy all our infantry. such arrangement will be me with some logistics challenges so it is normal to an extent, what about special forces that are deployed behind enemy lines? |
