Business / Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Now Worth $100 Billion by judchuks20(m): 11:40am On Aug 08
The Facebook (FB) CEO on Thursday became a centibillionaire: someone who is worth at least $100 billion. He crossed the milestone after shares in the social network surged. Only two other men, Amazon (AMZN)’s Jeff Bezos and Microsoft (MSFT)’s Bill Gates, have bigger personal fortunes.
Zuckerberg co-founded Facebook from his Harvard dorm room in 2004, and his biggest asset is still his 13% stake in the company, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index, which tracks the world’s wealthiest people.
The 36-year-old is also Facebook’s chairman and controlling shareholder.
Zuckerberg’s wealth got its latest bump as Facebook’s stock climbed 6.5% Thursday, a day after the company launched its TikTok clone, Reels, on Instagram. The release of the short video feature came just as US President Donald Trump threatened to ban TikTok, the Chinese-owned app that has exploded in popularity over the last year.
Trump made good on that threat Thursday, issuing an executive order that would block TikTok from operating in the United States if its Chinese owner, ByteDance, doesn’t sell the business to a US firm within 45 days.

Romance / How Important Is Your Girlfriend To You? by judchuks20(m): 1:09pm On Aug 02
What would you do without your best gal pal?

August 1 is National Girlfriends Day, which, according to National Day Calendar encourages women nationwide to celebrate their friendships and let their friends know how much they mean to each other.

National Girlfriends Day reportedly dates back to 2002 and was created by mother-daughter duo Kathleen Laing and Elizabeth Butterfield.

How important are friends?

Research in 2017, published in the journal Personal Relationships, indicated that as people age, friends became a stronger indicator of overall happiness than even family.

The study looked at over 270,000 people in nearly 100 countries found that strong friendships contributed to better mental health in advance age.

“But the really surprising thing was that, in a lot of ways, relationships with friends had a similar effect as those with family—and in others, they surpassed them,” said the study’s author, Wiliam Chopik, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Michigan State University.

Sports / Juventus Vs Roma: Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala Get Pre-champions League Rest by judchuks20(m): 7:47am On Aug 02
In a bid to keep them fresh ahead of Juventus’ Champions League fixture against Lyon, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala were rested in the final Serie A clash on Saturday night against AS Roma and that proved to be fatal as the Bianconeri – who had already sealed their ninth consecutive Italian title – lost to AS Roma 1-3. It was also their first loss at home since 2018 and after 40 matches. Also Read - Arsenal vs Chelsea: Aubameyang Brace Hands Gunners FA Cup, Europa League spot

It took Gonzalo Higuain merely five minutes to break the deadlock and give Maurizio Sarri’s Bianconeri the early lead. It was Bernadeschi’s good, low cross that Rabiot in the near post flicked it behind him and Higuain had to tap to find the back of the net. Eighteen minutes after that Roma hit back to level things. Nikola Kalinic’s perfect header got things on level terms for Roma midway through the first half. At the stroke of half-time, Roma was awarded a penalty and Diego Perotti slotted the ball at the back of the net with ease to get Roma in the lead. Roma went into half-time with the much-deserved lead. Juventus looked lacklustre and Roma took full advantage of that in the second half of the match. It was Perotti again in the 52nd-minute of the match. He had struck again to take a two-goal lead and take the match beyond Juventus’ reach.

By missing the game, Ronaldo – who was chasing Lazio’s Ciro Immobile – in the race to be Italy’s top league goalscorer has missed out on the Golden Boot.

Car Talk / Project Cars 3 A Game That’s Coming Soon by judchuks20(m): 12:08pm On Jun 04
Project Cars 3 is a game that’s coming screeching round the corner, its tyres on the edge of adhesion as it tries to cross the finish line just before the end of the race that is the current console generation. Slightly Mad Studios are dropping the game into racing fans’ laps this summer, aiming to deliver the polished all-round racing game that the series has always aspired to be.

Though it shares a name and the ambitions with the first two games, a lot has changed for Project Cars 3. Obviously it builds on the foundations of the first two games, with the series’ LiveTrack system making a comeback for dynamic weather that can match the real world conditions at a particular location or be set up to shift and change through a race event. With further refined graphics, it’s sure to provide plenty of spectacle, just as it has done before.

Car Talk / Mercedes-benz EQA In Motion by judchuks20(m): 6:52pm On May 31
A pre-production prototype of the Mercedes-Benz EQA was recently spotted by the walkoARTvideos, with less camouflage (compared to the winter tests) during tests in Germany.

The German manufacturer is probably on a final straight ahead of the market launch of its new all-electric model, which is expected to be unveiled by the end of this year.

We still don't know much about the EQA, besides the fact that it will be a sibling of the GLA.

Car Talk / Here Are Best Hybrids Cars Of 2020 by judchuks20(m): 4:32pm On May 30
2020 seems to be the year when many manufacturers are throwing their weight behind electric cars.

Many major brands have one or more pure electric vehicles coming out this year and many more in the pipeline.

While the idea of emissions-free motoring sounds great, pure electric still isn’t right for everybody, which is why the market is also packed with hybrid models ranging from the mildest of mild hybrids to plug-in hybrids that offer 50+ miles of electric-only range.

If you’re not sure which alternatively fuelled option is right for you then read our guide here. But if you’ve decided hybrid is the way forward, here are 10 of the best on the market right now.

Toyota Prius

The Prius is the granddaddy of hybrids and the car that did more than any other to bring the concept to the wider world. It’s now in its fourth generation and its technology has moved on a lot since 1997. The newest model, which shares its drivetrain with several other Toyotas, now packs a 1.8-litre petrol engine and 53kW electric motor. The regular hybrid offers 60mpg and CO2 emissions of 104g/km but the plug-in option drops emissions to 29g/km and ups claimed economy to around 200mpg. It’s still a slightly odd looking thing but beneath the skin is a spacious family car back by Toyota’s reliability and unrivalled hybrid knowledge.

Romance / Re: Nigerian Men And Their Foreign Wives (by Sabella) by judchuks20(m): 3:25pm On May 12
What is your point exactly

Not my writeup
Romance / Nigerian Men And Their Foreign Wives (by Sabella) by judchuks20(m): 2:46pm On May 12
Increasingly, and in greater numbers, Nigerian men are marrying non-Nigerian women. In droves, they are marrying Caribbean nationals, White-Americans and African-Americans. They are marrying, not for the primarily purpose of acquiring “greencard,” but for other noble reasons. They marry, not for the curiosity, but because they are bonded and are determined to make a success of the marriage institution; they are bonded by love and faith and a commitment to one another to live their lives as one in a happy matrimony.

The more I notice this phenomenon, the more I wonder about some Nigerian men. I wonder. Culturally, Nigerian men are overbearing, controlling, and paternalistic. They relate to their fathers and mothers differently. They believe it is “a man’s world” and so they have the tendency to relegate women to subservient roles. True, things are changing. True globalization and modernity and westernization are impacting the Nigerian culture. In cities across Nigeria, these changes are noticeable; but over all, the effects of these changes are minimal. A Nigerian may be well read, well educated and well traveled, in the end though, he will succumb to the weight and influence of the Nigerian culture.

We have a society where anthropological and sociological behaviors are still paramount. For instance, a great many Nigerians still practice levirate and sororate marriage, and they also engage in polygyny, bridewealth, and matrilocal and patrilocal living arrangements. And in spite of westernization, Nigerians are still not comfortable with public display of affection, i.e. kissing and verbal declaration of love; and neither are they comfortable with open and public discussions of abortion, sex and exotic sex acts. That Nigerians are not comfortable with such public declarations and have not completely embraced westernization is due, to a large extent, on the hold the traditional African culture has on the vast majority of the populace. At the core of every Nigerian, and indeed every African, is the thumbprint, the umbilical cord of their ancestors.

Jobs/Vacancies / 4 Ways Companies Can Support Their Workers During The Coronavirus Crisis by judchuks20(m): 9:21pm On Mar 31
Paula Caligiuri, Northeastern University and Helen De Cieri, Monash University

The coronavirus pandemic has forced tens of millions of employees across the U.S. to work from home. While this will save lives by limiting the transmission of COVID-19, it also poses significant challenges for employees’ well-being.

How can companies support the health of their employees – many of whom have never before worked from home for a significant amount of time?

As researchers in the area of human resource management, we have studied companies’ ability to adopt and encourage practices to improve employees’ well-being.

Here are four research-backed ways we believe companies can promote employees’ health and well-being during this crisis.

1. Provide more flexibility
Before the pandemic, only about 5% of the U.S. workforce worked from home on a regular basis.

But working from home affects every employee differently depending on their responsibilities and living situations. For example, with widespread school and childcare closures, workers with younger children need to balance keeping them occupied while trying to keep up with work tasks. And the same goes for those with elder-care responsibilities.

That’s why employer flexibility to match specific employee needs is crucial.

A good step is for companies to require managers to have open conversations with their employees about how and when work can be accomplished – without intruding on employees’ privacy – and offer a wider range of options for flexibility, such as more leeway when assignments need to be turned in or adjusting work hours per day to allow more time to care for children and others.

It’s also important for this order to come from the top because not all managers view flexibility positively.

For workers in states where they can still head to the office, companies should also offer more flexibility, such as reduced hours, a compressed work week or even a leave of absence.

And employees should not be passive. Let your managers know what kinds of flexibility you need to balance your work and home lives.

Foreign Affairs / Dangers Of Depicting Greta Thunberg As A Prophet by judchuks20(m): 11:07am On Dec 13, 2019
She came from obscurity and ignited a global movement. Beginning with a small but persistent act of protest outside the Swedish parliament, she inspired millions to join her. Her fiery speech to the United Nations in September 2019 warned of the end of the world. Her unfailing determination and passion makes her appear otherworldly, even uncanny, an affect largely attributed to her diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome.

So it’s no surprise that many people – along with media outlets like The Irish Times, The Telegraph and The Washington Times – have cast Greta Thunberg as a prophet.

When Time announced her as “Person of the Year,” it continued the trope, using an evocative photograph of Thunberg standing on a rocky shoreline, staring at the heavens, for the cover.

As a researcher on the history of childhood, I’ve been disturbed to see Thunberg described and depicted as a prophet. To me, it risks distorting her message. And it can easily be exploited by climate deniers seeking to counter the appeal of her activism.

Is a climate messiah even necessary?
To some, Thunberg resembles Joan of Arc, the teenage visionary who led the French army into battle in the 15th century and was later canonized as a saint.

To others, Thunberg exemplifies the Judeo-Christian tradition of prophets who speak truth to power; according to one Christian blogger, she offers “a prophetic voice to shake us out of our complacency.”

Education / Why Do Teachers Make Us Read Old Stories? by judchuks20(m): 2:14pm On Nov 21, 2019
There are probably as many reasons to read old stories as there are teachers.

Old stories are sometimes strange. They display beliefs, values and ways of life that the reader may not recognize.

As an English professor, I believe that there is value in reading stories from decades or even centuries ago.

Teachers have their students read old stories to connect with the past and to learn about the present. They also have their students read old stories because they build students’ brains, help them develop empathy and are true, strange, delightful or fun.

Connecting with the past and present

William Shakespeare wrote plays in the 1600s that are still read today.

In Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” for example, teenagers speak a language that’s almost completely unfamiliar to modern readers. They fight duels. They get married. So that might seem to be really different from today.

And yet, Romeo and Juliet fall in love and make their parents mad, very much like many teens today. Ultimately, they commit suicide, something that far too many teens do today. So Shakespeare’s play may be more relevant than it first seems.

Foreign Affairs / Did Trump Admit To Bribery? by judchuks20(m): 11:11pm On Nov 14, 2019
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Thursday that President Donald Trump had admitted to bribery in the Ukraine scandal, accusing the Republican leader of an impeachable offence under the U.S. Constitution.

Pelosi, who launched the Democratic-led House impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24, spoke a day after the first public hearing in the investigation of Trump, who solicited foreign interference in a U.S. election during a July 25 phone call with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Democrats also say the Trump administration withheld $391 million in U.S. aid as leverage for an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading Democratic candidate in the race to replace Trump in 2020.

Romance / How Long Should Sex Last? - Aiden Promotions by judchuks20(m): 10:09am On Nov 07, 2019
There is no official rule on how long sex should last. The duration of sex varies from couple to couple and can depend on many factors, such as:

• Their preferences. Some couples want sex to be fast. Others like to take a slower pace.

• Their circumstances. Young, busy parents might have short sexual encounters when they have time. Couples relaxing on the weekend may spend the entire day in bed.

• Their age and health. As people get older, they sometimes need more time to become aroused and reach orgasm.

• Their definition of “sex.” If couples define sex as the time spent in penile-vaginal intercourse, then sex might last just a few minutes. But if they include pre-intimacy and other sexual activities (massage, MouthAction, etc.), it could be much longer.

Scientifically, duration of sex is often associated with the intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT). This measurement begins when the penis first enters the vagina and ends when the man ejaculates.

In 2005, a study of 500 couples in five different countries found that the median IELT is 5.4 minutes. But that assumes a definition of sex as heterosexual intercourse. Couples – both heterosexual and homosexual – may have different views.

Career / Matthew Mcconaughey Is A Saint Delivering 1,600 Meals To First Responders And Sh by judchuks20(m): 8:58pm On Nov 03, 2019
Matthew McConaughey proved he is an angel after helping delivering 1,600 meals to first responders and shelters battling the fires in Los Angeles. McConaugh-bae – who is the creative director of Wild Turkey bourbon – worked with the Operation BBQ Relief team, to provide food to 800 people at 20 fire stations in California. The other 800 meals were prepared for homeless shelters. Can he be any more amazing? The 49-year-old Wolf Of Wall Street actor took to his brand’s social media to encourage people to get involved with the cause. The post was captioned: ‘Wild Turkey With Thanks. We’re in LA with @opbbqrelief, cooking and delivering hot meals to the brave first responders working to contain the California fires. ‘We’re proud to partner with Operation BBQ Relief, join us in supporting their work. Text DONATEOBR to 41444 to donate or see the link in our bio.’ Other Wild Turkey employees also volunteered (Picture: @wildturkey) The actor had also said in a Facebook Live that California is his second home so helping out while the fires ravaged homes was probably an easy choice for him. Matthew said: ‘Teaming up with Operation BBQ Relief as part of the Wild Turkey ‘With Thanks’ has never been more meaningful. ‘Little did we know when planning this annual event that California, my second home, would once again be hit with devastating fires. ‘Being able to provide meals to the men and women who put themselves on the line is an honour for me, Jimmy and Eddie Russell. He continued: ‘We are grateful to be here today to say thank you, shine a light on their unwavering conviction, and hopefully inspire others to get involved and help in their own communities.’ Meanwhile, when he’s not volunteering, Matthew is teaching the youth of tomorrow.

Education / Should Parents Help Their Kids With Homework? by judchuks20(m): 4:40pm On Sep 02, 2019
Schools across the country encourage parents to help their children with homework.

Parents are listening. Helping with homework is one of the most common things that parents say they do to support their children’s learning.

Many experts have found that helping with homework cultivates positive learning behaviors, reinforces class material and signals to children that their education is important. The federal Department of Education says that parents play an important role in their children’s learning when they help with homework.

Yet parents often hear through the media that helping with homework may not be worth it. After seeing headlines such as “Why It’s So Important You Never Help Your Kids With Their Homework” and “Don’t Help Your Kids With Their Homework,” moms, dads and other caregivers can be left wondering whether they should even bother.

I’m a professor of education policy. Together with sociologist Angran Li, I set out to make sense of this conflicting guidance.

Religion / A New Solution For America’s Empty Churches: A Change Of Faith by judchuks20(m): 4:01pm On Aug 30, 2019
Over the past few decades, vacant and underutilized churches have become a familiar sight in American cities.

In some cases, a congregation or a religious governing body – say, a Catholic diocese – will sell the church to developers, who then turn them into apartments, offices, art galleries, museums, breweries or performance spaces.

But what about churches in neighborhoods that aren’t doing well, areas that are less attractive to developers looking to turn a profit?

In Buffalo, New York, two empty Roman Catholic churches were recently converted – not into apartments or offices, but into other places of worship. One became an Islamic mosque, the other a Buddhist temple.

As an architect and historic preservation planner, I was drawn to this phenomenon. With the help of Enjoli Hall, who was then a graduate student at University at Buffalo, I interviewed those involved in converting the former churches.

With immigrant and refugee populations growing in post-industrial cities across the U.S., the conversion of vacant Christian churches into new places of worship can preserve historic architecture and strengthen burgeoning communities.

In Buffalo, a split between east and west
Buffalo has long been an immigrant gateway. From 1850 to 1900, the city’s population increased by over 700%. In 1892, over one-third of Buffalo’s residents were foreign born. Poles, Germans and Italians settled in the city, leading to a wave of church construction. In the 1930s, African Americans started migrating from southern US to the east side of the city.

But by 2010, the city’s population had dwindled to just over 260,000 people – less than half of what it was in 1950.

Health / Concussion In Kids: Insomnia Treatment Linked To Faster Recovery by judchuks20(m): 5:07pm On Aug 26, 2019
Active kids sustain injuries. It is estimated that every year more than 100,000 Canadian children and adolescents get a concussion while participating in normal childhood activities, like sports and play.

Most kids return to school and activities within about one month of the injury, but sometimes they need specialized concussion treatment and rehabilitation.

Our recent study, published in the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, found that psychotherapy can improve adolescents’ insomnia after concussion and that it also improves overall post-concussion recovery.

Concussion and sleep
Although the majority of youth with concussion will recover within about one month, 20 to 30 per cent will have symptoms that have not resolved.

Those with slow concussion recovery are more likely to repeatedly visit health-care professionals, miss school and, as a result, have parents who need to take time off of work. Finding ways to improve recovery has become a top priority.

Health / Depression & Suicide: Twin Evils On The Rise In Nigeria by judchuks20(m): 3:34pm On May 22, 2019
There has been much speculation about modern environments causing an epidemic of depression. It is also important to determine whether depression rates have increased and review evidence for possible explanations. While available data indicate rising prevalence and an increased lifetime risk for younger cohorts, strong conclusions cannot be drawn due to conflicting results and methodological flaws.

The growing burden of chronic diseases, which arise from an evolutionary mismatch between past human environments and modern-day living, may be central to rising rates of depression. Some wonder whether declining social capital and greater inequality and loneliness are candidate mediators of a depression.

Yet, there are other factors that can also be examined.
