Career / Telecoms Financing: All Nigerian Network Operators Must Meet Integrity Standards by judchuks20(m): 3:20am On Jul 11, 2017
After collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on a loan repayment plan and
the appointment of an interim board of directors for Etisalat Nigeria, the board of the
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) Thursday directed the commission to ensure that
all network operators in the country meet financial and technical integrity standards in
relation to telecoms financing.
Concerned about the debt crisis that threatened to hamper Etisalat’s operations, the NCC
board at the end of its meeting said the directive had become imperative in order to
avert unforeseen circumstances in the future.
In a statement signed by NCC spokesman, Mr. Tony Ojobo, the board said: “The board, under
the chairmanship of Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye held an emergency meeting on Wednesday,
July 5, 2017, to review the Etisalat issue in its entirety and also review the

Travel / Cameroon Forces About 1,000 Refuges Into Nigeria by judchuks20(m): 12:49am On Jun 30, 2017
Cameroon authorities forced nearly 900 refugees back to northern Nigeria against their will this week, violating an agreement between the two countries to shield thousands from Boko Haram violence, the United Nations said on Thursday.

The Cameroonian government denied force had been used to send refugees home and said repatriation had taken place with the refugees’ consent.

About 887 Nigerians, most of them children, were ferried across the border on Tuesday night in trucks provided by the Nigerian military and Cameroonian police, the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) said.

Celebrities / How A Nigerian Went From Nothing To Becoming Instagram Star by judchuks20(m): 8:08am On Jun 28, 2017
As a young school leaver, Damilola Olatunde’s favourite past time was posting funny pictures and status updates on Facebook. All that ended in 2013 after Instagram released an update, allowing users upload videos.

Damilola switched to making Instagram comedy skits right away. With every video, he got better and soon learned to edit them all by himself.

Today, the Florida Memorial University MBA holder, who is popularly known as Aphricanape, is referred to as the new era king of comedy.

With over 436,000 followers, Aphricanape occupies a top position on the list of Nigeria’s biggest Instagram comedians.

“People enjoyed my skits right from the start. As expected, there were some haters and naysayers, but the love I received outweighed the hate, so I kept pushing,” he said recently.

“The ultimate goal is to grow beyond the skits and get into movies in both Nollywood and Hollywood.”

Not only is comedy a full-time job for him, it has earned him stand-up comedy gigs in the US, Canada, London, and Nigeria.

Welcome to bankable world of Nigerian Instagram comedians, many of whom have come from “nothing” to become online sensations.

Not only that, they are sort by brands and raking in lots of money in multimillion naira endorsements while giving analogue comedians a run for their money. But beware. Follow them at your own risk because they can leave you in stitches.

Lately, Instagram has proven to be the easiest and best platform for enterprising Nigerian youth to showcase their creative skills.

Little wonder that a crop of young Nigerian comedians are rapidly taking over the Nigerian comedy space with their teeming Instagram followers. So popular are some of them that multinational brands are taking advantage of their clout and fan base.

Armed with just an Internet enabled phone/tablet, camera, costume, make-up and amazing parody skills, these young men and women are smiling to the bank.

No longer a joking matter!

Next time you are tempted to say, “its just Instagram”, you might want to have a rethink. An average Aphricanape’s Instagram skit attracts 100,000 views, about 1,200 comments, an average of 3000

The Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) has urged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the on-going Independent National ElectoralCommission (INEC) voter registration to register and obtain voters’ cards ahead of 2019.

Politics / Vote 2019: Abubakar Bello Disowns Supporters Placing Posters In Public by judchuks20(m): 2:13am On Jun 23, 2017
Gov. Abubakar Bello of Niger, has disowned supporters placing his posters across the state, urging him to re-contest the 2019 elections.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Jonathan Vasta, said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Minna.

“The governor and the entire government of Niger state are dissociating themselves from such outright contraventions that are not in the character of the administration in the state.

“The governor believes in the rule of law and will not support placing of posters in form of campaign when INEC the body constitutionally empowered to give such go ahead has not done so.’’

Vatsa said that Bello would not encourage such distraction when he was occupied with delivering the dividends of democracy to the people as promised during his campaigns.

Sports / The Woman Who Won A Gold Medal For Partaking In The Nigeria Prison Sports Fest by judchuks20(m): 7:54pm On Jun 22, 2017
BREAKING Today I was awarded a gold medal in the Nigerian Prison Sports festival which lasted 3 weeks the week I left. Medal day was today at 10am. I was in court. YES I enjoyed prison! It is not the best place. My complainant cannot break me. I made the best out of a bad situation. I can even make doughnuts and egg buns too. Wardress Sylva taught me. You can also learn hairdressing and sewing. Most of the females are not interested, just a few. Ijeoma is on death row and she made the dress I wore on my exit and the one I wore at the news conference. These services were FREE. I also did medication counseling free for inmates as a pharmacist. My 81days was not to “correct or rehabilitate” me. I was awaiting trial. Nigeria does not have city jails so we are mixed with convicts. They wear blue, we wear green. That is why I call everyone that called me ex-convict an illiterate. I have not been convicted of a crime yet. Take corrections and improve your knowledge of the English language. It was a rousing welcome for me as prison staff have never seen me with makeup and traditional clothing. They said I looked good. Even lawyers in court were all talking. Thank you Mr. Chibuike the sports director awarding me the medal. I am now in the history books of Nigeria.

Business / Nigeria Stocks At 2-year High, As Recession Eases by judchuks20(m): 7:06pm On Jun 19, 2017
Nigerian stocks rose to a fresh two-year high on Monday, lifted by gains in cement and banking shares extending a rally which started last month, traders said.

The main index climbed 0.96 percent to cross 34,000 points, a level it last reached in May 2015.

Index provider MSCI this month increased Nigeria’s weight on its frontier index to 7.9 percent from 6.5 percent, meaning that funds tracking it would buy shares to replicate the new weight, analysts say.

In April the central bank allowed investors to trade the naira at market rates, lifting a currency control for them, to help boost confidence as Nigeria grapples with a currency crisis and a recession brought on by low ...

Crime / Nigeria: The Ex Naval Boss In Fraud Accusation by judchuks20(m): 6:54pm On Jun 19, 2017
Justice A. S. Umar of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja on Monday, admitted in evidence two documents tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin, who is standing trial for alleged corruption.

At the last sitting, June 14, there were arguments and counter arguments between Jibrin’s counsel, Y. C. Maikyau, SAN and counsel to the EFCC, Faruk Abdallah, on whether the documents tendered by the latter against the defendant is admissible or not.
The documents are: the Appropriation Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2013 & 2014 on one hand and the the Appropriation Act of the National Assembly for 2013 and 2014 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the other hand.

Miakyau had argued that the documents sought to be tendered by the prosecution did not satisfy the provisions of Section 106 of the Evidence Act, while Abdallah cited Section 122 (1) (2) of the Evidence Act to the effect that the documents tendered are admissible.

In his ruling today, Justice Umar admitted the two documents – a three-volume of Appropriation Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for 2013 as exhibit 16 a, b and c, and a three-volume of Appropriation Act of the National Assembly 2014 as exhibit 17 a, b and c.

“I have read carefully and examined the relevant Act, the prosecution has conformed to Section 106 of the Evidence Act”, the judge held.

Justice Umar, thereafter, adjourned to July 13 – 14, 2017 for continuation of trial.

Jibrin is facing trial alongside Rear Admiral Bala Mshelia, Rear Admiral Shehu Ahmadu (all retired) and Habor Bay International Limited on a 4-count charge of criminal conspiracy preferred against them by the EFCC.
The naval chiefs whilst in office allegedly bought a house worth N600million from the account of Naval Engineering Services without budgetary provision.

It was also alleged that, the documentation for transfer of ownership of the property was done such that a private company owned by the family of the first defendant (Vice Admiral Jibrin) became the buyer.
