user4321: I'm tired of seeing this actually. First of all what school did you attend, and what course did you study?. Did you never use the internet?. Did you never try self studying?. Did you never compare curriculum?. Did you never try to understand one thing you ever studied?. I find this awkwardly funny because, my classmates and I used to look through PhD qualifying exams of some B rated state schools in America and find that the questions were familiar, and some easy to solve. Now, not because we were geniuses of any sort, but because sometimes we went just a tiny inch overboard to do some self learning. I've looked at curriculum, I've seen past exam questions, and I don't believe this nonsense of buddha level knowledge required for graduate school (except of course , everybody decides to be you ). The only thing we miss is intensive practical sessions (as we don't have the tools); but trust me if it's theoretical knowledge, then if you're lagging behind it's your fault. I know someone would like to blame Nigerian Lecturers; but knowing the state of affairs and refusing to help yourself by teaching yourself is just misplaced priorities. Except you're doing Representation theory, and P-adic Forms in your first week of grad school, don't come here and blow inanities please Bros calm down na... They've not said they'll cope na |

fairheart: God bless you! Nigeria still give us something! Even in the midst of tough hardship, corruption, lies, etc, doesn't this country make us strong? Doesn't it give us vision? Doesn't everything that is bad about us still give us inspiration that made every F1 student on this thread aspire for education in the US? The thing is that, people don't study history. Even the saints and angels on this thread are not better. I wonder what kind of education they are even getting in the US! There was a time in history of the United States that its youths travel to Japan to learn.
Well, despite that Nigeria isn't great as she should, many of us have discovered our dreams in this dark country. Oh yeah! So, God bless you again. Don't mind those people who now see Nigeria--a part of their very own identity--as a dark hell! They can say all sort of awful stuffs about Nigeria, but so long they are citizens of this country and chose not to come home to see what they (who have received better education that Nigeria denied them) can do to heal a portion of our ills as a nation (which, in fact, is even one of the duties of young citizens with capable resources), they are hypocrite! They should be ashamed!
God bless you Agreatman! Well said brother.... You said the simple and gospel truth. |

Dalmakz: Transcript for my USA Visa interview Location: Abuja Date: 25th June, 2019
Profile B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering MSc in Materials Science and Engineering Taken GRE: Yes Taken TOEFL: Yes Academic Start Session: Fall 2019 Course of study: PhD Systems Engineering (Option of Mechanical Engineeing) School: Univeristy of Louisianna lafayette (ULL) Fully Funded: Yes
I got to the venue by 8:42am for a 9.00am appointnent. I was happy I used taxify as I felt I had eluded the rain, but little did I know that the rain had other plans for me. I actually thought the taxi could go into the premises but the mobile police men no gree o. As the car stopped, hustlers were already everywhere offering me umbrella as it was raining heavily. So I got down and stood with one of them who was a lady under her umbrella (this didn't even prevent the rain from beating me). Luckily for me she was igbo so it was easy to bargain with her how much it would cost to keep my phones in her possession. I was really skeptical about giving her my phone but I no get option so I just gave her everything and took down her details on a paper. She then walked me into the embassy. It was raining heavily... you know that type of rain that comes with the wind. Before i could get to where we would be checked in, I was already was practically soaked from hair to toe. I started feeling cold and feverish but I no send... I told myself, it is either you get this vis today or you die here today...
So after all the check in and biometrics process, I was directed to windows 7 which had a Male VO who was very strict. I was the last in the line so after so time, the usher directed me to go to windows 10 which had a female VO.
Fast forward to my turn...The VO was a white lady. Very friendly. She approved the lady before me. She was not in a haste and was not in a habit of cutting people off as they were talking. And so it got to my turn..
VO Signals me to come) Good morning can I have your I-20 and passport.
Me: Good morning Ma (Passed her my I-20 and pasport)
VO: (Looks at something on my I-20 and starts typing furiously...stops typing after sometime and then looks at my I-20 again and then she says) " wow you have a graduate assistantship, wow, congratulations"
Me: Thank you Ma
VO: Why did you apply to the ULL?
Me: (so I have been rehearsing this reply before my interview date...I basically fabricated it to be said in less than 30secs) Basically, the ULL is strongly expertised in my area of interested research which happens to be focused on the "processing and enhancement of semiconductor materials for low K dielectrics". My desire to be at the ULL was further intensified after perusing through the faculty directory and discovering that the research direction of Dr. XXXXXXX is well in line with mine. Having communicated with her, she was willing to admit me into her research group as my supervisor. With all these in mind, I tendered in an application, knowing this would be a good fit for my PhD plans (she was just nodding as she was typing and looking at me...mehn her eyes was not on the computer but was on me...)
VO: Have you finished your master's degree program?
Me: Yes. I concluded my program on the 1st of July at the African University of Science and Technology Abuja.
VO: Have you been employed before?
Me: Yes. After my NYSC, I worked for a period of 8 months as a graduate trainee at the XXXXXXX where they assemble and manufacture cars.
VO: What other schools did you apply to? How many admitted you ?
Me: I also applied to the University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) and Michigan Technological University (MTU). MTU rejected me while UNL accepted me.
VO: Did you write TOEFL and GRE
Me: Yes. I told her my scores.
VO: Tell me about your research area for your PhD program in systems engineering?
Me: My primary research would be focused on the deposition and characterisation of low K materials (SiCOH) using plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD).
VO: what are low K materials?
Me: (At this point i was determined to explain to her in the best way I could) Low K materials are materials that have a low dielectric constant. They are used to make the components of an integrated circuit. Remember that there was a time that this computer you are using right now was not like this, it was quite bigger and not as swift as it is now (she affirmed yes). So in other to transform it to what it is today, it faced a miniaturaization. The miniaturization of devices have lead to improved performance but however, the set back is the interconnect-induced delay called the RC delay. Low dielectric constant materials as an interconnecting insulator insulator in integrated circuits are essential for resistance-capacitance (RC) time delay.....
VO: What will this degree do for you? Me: It is my desire to be a top researcher and a lecturer in my field in a Nigerian Institution to help produce intelligent and ambitious minds who would work tirelessly to revolutionalise Nigeria. As such, getting a PhD degree is a pertinent requirement in achieving this.
VO: Did you agree to go to this school because of the funding?
Me: No ma. Basically, almost all PhD programs are fully funded. I went for the ULL because of...
VO: (She cuts me) I will be approving your Visa. Once again congratulations on your graduate assistantship. Its indeed a great one. You will be needing your I-20 at the point of entry. She then gave me a white paper...
Me: I was just looking at her eye balls... I was so overwhelmed. I told her thank you...
While I was leaving the building I kept a straight and hard face like i was rejected so that those police officers would not task me... Gave the lady that kept my phones for me 1500 for me and that was it...
Thanks to everyone who has ever posted on this thread.... Pardon my typo error if any... Congratulations, God bless your new journey |

Yhukay00: I'm a newbie here please @ Lagosismyhome, fairheart, sharwama and all the critics should help me look into this my proposed transcript, thanks.
V.O : why are you going to the U.S.A ME : I'm going for a B.Sc in computer science at the college of saint rose. V.O : why U.S.A ME : A degree In the U.S opens up a wide range of career prospects and gives me an edge over my contemporaries upon my return to Nigeria. V.O : how many schools did you apply to. ME : 4 universities all admitted V.O : name them ME : st cloud state university, Gannon university, college of saint rose, concord University V.O : why college of saint rose M.E : college of saint rose is one of the top schools in America studying game designing and development, which is a part of computer science that interests me a lot(it's #4 in New York according to universities.com, but I don't know if I should tell the V.O this) and I was also given a $23k/year scholarship. V.O : why were you given the scholarship ME : it was because of SAT score and personal statement V.O : what would a degree in computer science do for you ME : it would help me develop a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of programming, database management, software engineering, networks, then go on to study topics that range from forensic computing to mobile programming and game design V.O : what will you be doing after your degree ME : I'd return to Nigeria after my undergraduate degree to have my NYSC, and get a job, *hopefully* in one of the top IT firms in Nigeria. I'd also like to startup a video game developing company, giving there are not many top game developers here in Nigeria, I would like to jump on this opportunity and be among the very best. V.O : who would be sponsoring you and what doe he do ME : My Dad. He's a businessman who imports leathers and fabrics to Nigeria from China and delivers nationwide. "Hopefully" doesn't sound affirmative, replace that with something better.... Secondly, include questions about your high school and what you've been doing also bearing in mind we have tons of universities here in naija that can offer the same course, prepare for such questions too. |

solihp: The last post I promised, long post alert
Things that might have helped me during this admission process
During my application process, there were somethings I wished I knew while reading previous transcripts of others and that is why I have decided to be as detailed as possible in my profile so it could be of help to those going for Spring and fall 2020 and beyond that.
I graduated in November 2018 and I decided to apply for my Masters in December, that was extremely late you might say considering the fact that GRE is almost always required for my proposed course of study, but one thing that helped was that I had been following both the GRE and this thread for months before I graduated, but don't be like me if you could help it, prepare far ahead.
So I had to register to write my GRE exam in the first week of February, prepared for less than two months combined with researching the schools I wanted to apply to.
The most important thing is to know yourself, Statistics is my background and I have always loved Mathematics so it made the preparation process abit easier. But I would suggest you prepare for at least 3 months.
Because I wanted to write GRE in February, I was limited to schools that had their priority deadlines around January 31, February 1 and 15 and March.
So I will give some points that helped me and explain them:
Get in contact with the graduate coordinator/director even before you apply: I can't emphasise this enough, before I submitted my application, I emailed all the graduate directors, told them my profile and that I was going to write GRE in February and asked if I could still meet up to be considered for graduate assistantship, I went ahead with some of the schools that replied me. This helped so much that I had a feeling two schools already decided to admit me and were only waiting for my GRE scores, immediately I finished my GRE exam, I reported my unofficial scores to them via email, my official scores got to them on February 18th which was past 6 out of the 7 schools' priority deadline. I got my first admission few days later and another one few weeks later. Unsurprisingly, they were from the two schools I kept in contact with their graduate directors (GD) the most.
Please follow-up on your application: Sometimes, you wonder why you haven't heard from some schools months after you submitted your application. So I had a particular school that I didn't hear anything from around 1 month after my official GRE score got to them, i emailed the director. Guess what he told me?, he said it was indicated that something was missing on my application even when it says completed on the application portal, he told me he would help me check what was missing the next day.
When he checked, he realised there was nothing actually missing, he reviewed my application and sent my admission letter with funding that same week. So what if I didn't draw his attention to my application? Please follow up biko.
You can ask for more funding: When I was admitted into GSU, I was given full tuition waiver and 5k stipends, I got in contact with graduate students in the school and I was told there was no way the 5k stipends would sustain my living expenses. I was even more motivated when I saw on grad cafe that someone admitted few days before me, a masters student but different concentration in my department was offered 10k.
I wrote a fanimorous(don't mind the incorrect English) to the GD, telling her how the school was my top choice, how I am grateful to be admitted and offered scholarship but that I needed my stipends to be increased.
It wasn't easy o, I had to send plenty plenty reminders, she told me the highest they could offer me was 5k, I sent more emails. Later she told me, okay wait till after April 15th, if some people reject their offers, we can offer you more.
After April 15th, I sent her another email, then ending of the month, they finally said they can increase the stipends to 10k and sometime in May, I got the updated admission letter. I am sure when the GD sees me in August, she would be like, so this is Solihp that almost finished me with emails, lol.
Look at how she said she couldn't offer more but later told me to be patient, persistency paid off. Of course, it won't always work, American University that I fell in love with their curriculum, cost of attendance was around 64k and I was offered partial tuition waiver and stipends worth 19k, I sent email to the GD, he told me point blank the award is a merit based scholarship and that was the highest they give people, Washington DC living cost that was expensive, I just waka pass jare. So it won't always work but there's no harm in trying, just be polite about it.
Communication is key: Communicate with the schools you're applying to, for instance 5 out of 7 of the schools I applied to automatically waived English Proficiency test for me since Nigeria is an English speaking Country. For the remaining 2, I sent a letter from the registrar's office of my undergraduate school stating that my degree was taught solely in English Language and the compulsory requirement was waived for me.
Always remember that the admission committee tends to look at your overall profile, so try to work on things that can enhance your profile, write GRE, write TOEFL too if you have the means, write nice statement of purpose. For undergraduate, don't give up on yourself quickly, some schools assess your GPAs for the last two years of your study, so please finish strong.
In summary, prepare ahead, write those standardised tests, it would help your chance of being admitted, keep in contact with the GDs, etc. I wish you all the best. Here is my finalised offers in details.
American University (admitted into both Biostatistics and Statistics programs with 19k scholarship)
George Washington University: (admitted into both Biostatistics and Statistics programs, no funding)
Villanova University: ( Admitted into Applied Statistics program, no funding)
Michigan Technological University : ( Admitted into Statistics, Mathematical Science, and Data science programs, no funding)
Bowling Green State University : (I was admitted into their Applied Statistics program in February ending and funding didn't come until first week in June, full tuition waiver and stipends worth 13k)
University of Iowa: Waitlisted then rejected
Georgia State University: (Admitted into Biostatistics with full tuition waiver and stipends worth 40k)
Fall 2019, yes we made it
I was intentionally explicit about everything, this is my own way of giving back to the thread and I hope it would help someone in the future. All the best This is really helpful bro, thanks abunch for this piece, we statisticians are going to be learning from you and congratulations as well ps please stay tunned to help us too. |

TheZed: Appreciation Post
I want to take this time out to appreciate everyone that have contributed to my journey so far. Firstly, I’d like to exalt the King of all Kings for his infinite love over my life.
Glitteringstar—I really hope this beautiful soul is reading this presently or sometimes in the future. I have never met her neither have we spoken on phone before. However, She did contributed to my GRE payment in 2017. That GRE gave me admission, funding and consequently visa to finally achieve my dreams. Ma’am, I tried to reach out to you after my visa was approved but the email address you used to contact me is no more active. Also, I want to appreciate those that used Walspring to subsidize GRE fee around that time too. I benefited from that benevolent gesture.
Happyday—The resume and SOP I used was all due to your kind assistance—He was readily available to make corrections and contributions even with his tight schedule.
Lastly, A big thank you to Oluwaseun Osewa for creating this wonderful repository of information—nairaland. I really don’t know how the trajectory of my life would have been if I haven’t come across nairaland, this thread and the beautiful souls that have graced it.
There are so many others on and off this thread both home and abroad that was of immense help in so many ways. I want you all to know that I’m eternally grateful. I pray this very moment for you all, whatever your heart desires, God will grant them to you.
Kind Regards, A grateful heart Edumare bless your hustle brother |

solihp: My Appreciation post
First, I want to return all the glory back to God Almighty for the strength he has given me these past 7months, going through this kind of process hasn't been all easy but I thank him cause he's ever faithful, may His name be highly magnified.
GboyegaD: When I first decided to apply for my Masters in December 2018, I emailed him with my list of schools, I had limited list because I was hoping to write GRE in the first week of February, I told him I had gone through all the Nationally ranked schools on USnews that offered Statistics(about 100 of them) , he looked at my list and told me to go over the list again. Looking back at the initial list I sent to him, I realised most of the schools I got admitted into, especially the school I am going to right now; Georgia State University was not there. Thank you very much for the encouragement and for making me go through that list again, I really appreciate your efforts.
Deyemzy: Our friendship kicked off in February, at first because we were both Statisticians. We waited for the admissions together, composed compelling emails to the graduate directors together, when it was time to apply for visa, we scrutinised each other's transcript, conducted several mock interview, etc. Thank you very much dear friend, you were one of my support system during this process.
To my school guys: Tomiwaa, Scott200, iwriterng. It has been a pleasure being in contact with you all and I am hoping to see the 3 of you in school this August during the graduate or international student orientation.
To the wonderful people I have met through this process: Omohakin, Tegaadogb, Spotlighte, etc
To the nice people I met when I got delayed on my first trial: We literally hustled for dates together, shared info about the next available dates for previously refused individuals, thank you; misstemi2, kay100, Temi87, dwilliams707. I am hoping we all get our visas very soon
Fairheart: Immediately I got delayed the first time, I sent him a message, he was very helpful as he scrutinised my transcript to perfection and conducted several mock interviews for me, thank you for your efforts and time, I do not take it for granted
To everyone: To everyone on this thread who has contributed in one way or the other, to those I have read their transcripts, to those who have stayed on this thread just to help out others, to those who came to my rescue and encouraged me when I was first delayed, I say thank you very much, the things you do accumulated to this approval. I hope I would be able to help the upcoming applicants in any way I could. Keep up the good work

One more posts incoming later Congratulations brother |
