Jukun Militia Kill 3, Set Ablaze Over 200 Houses In Benue Community

By Tor Vande Acka

Makurdi – Suspected Jukun militia in the early hours of Wednesday, attacked Jootar, a border community between Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state and Taraba state, killing three persons in the process.

The militia also allegedly set ablaze over 200 houses, just as the three persons that lost their lives were burnt beyond recognition.

But we reliably gathered that the figures of the dead could be as high as eight persons.

INDEPENDENT also gathered that two police officers that were on duty in the area have been declared missing.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benue State Command, DSP Sewuese Anene confirmed the number of deaths and the missing police officers.

She said: “The incident at Jootar is confirmed; three unidentified corpses recovered. Two officers on duty in the area yet to be found. Investigation is still in progress.”

Meanwhile, another six persons including a woman were also feared dead in Ankya, Mbamena council ward, another community of Ukum LGA on Wednesday.

However, a three month-old-baby whose mother was killed in the attack, survived the incident.

According to INDEPENDENT investigations, the Wednesday attack was a reprisal attack carried out by the Tongov community of Katsina-Ala LGA on Mbamena council ward of Ukum LGA.

Our findings revealed that the Mbamena community had earlier invaded the Tongov community and killed one person about two days ago.

In the attack by Jukun militia on Jootar, an eye witness in the area told INDEPENDENT that the Jukun militia had laid siege on Jootar at about 4am on Wednesday, through Wukari LGA.

He explained that no sooner had the militia got into the town, than they started shooting sporadically at human targets, and set on fire over 200 houses in the area.

The Caretaker Chairman, Ukum LGA, Tortyokaa Ibellogo who condemned the unprovoked attack on Jootar, described it as unfortunate.

He said, “To the best of my knowledge this is supposed to be a crisis between the Tiv and Jukun in Taraba state and has nothing to do with Benue. In Benue state, we have Jukun in Abintse and Wurukum in Guma and Makurdi LGAs respectively and they are living peacefully with the Tiv people.

“I want to call on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) and President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency intervene in this crisis. Already we are trying to maintain a social distance to face the COVID – 19 pandemic which has affected Benue, Nigeria and the entire world.”

Ibellogo explained that property destroyed during the attack could be worth millions of naira.

INDEPENDENT sources further stated that the Jukun militia had operated in the area for about three hours unhindered, even though the location of the military Special Forces posted to the area to keep the peace was less than 2 kilometres away from the community where the militia had carried out the attack.

That another tests need to be conducted. Something is telling me things were not properly done in this lady's case. And if she didn't have the virus at first place and you guys insisted she did, I'll advise her to sue you guys for all you are worth, looking at the psychological damage done, to her and her loved ones.

The woman has the virus.

Dimitar Berbatov reveals why he was wrong about Odion Ighalo

Dimitar Berbatov has admitted that Odion Ighalo is proving him wrong at Manchester United so far, praising him for his goalscoring, strength and technical ability.

Some eyebrows were raised when United brought Ighalo in on a short-term loan deal in January, given that they had been linked with the likes of Erling Braut Haaland instead, but the Nigerian striker is starting to settle in at Old Trafford.

The former Watford forward has now scored three goals for his new club, despite not making a Premier League start since his move – and ex-United striker Berbatov has admitted that Ighalo is impressing him.

“I’m really happy to see that Odion Ighalo is settling in well,” Berbatov wrote for Betfair, “and he deserves it with the way he is playing, how he links the plays and the goals he is scoring.

“All the team are happy when he scores which shows he is fully integrated, and I like the way he looks for the ball and bullies the defenders.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t know too much about him before he joined, obviously I knew about his record in the Premier League, but I questioned if he was the right man and if he would get into the team, but so far he is doing well and proving me wrong.

“When you need to play more direct in a game you need a presence in the box, a guy who knows how to get onto the end of a ball, bully the defenders and win the ball.

“Ighalo can do that, but he can also play, is technically good as well, he can keep the ball and give it to his team-mates and get into the box, that’s why I like him.

“He doesn’t just stay in the box and try to head the ball. He is linking really well with others and that shows in the team performances when he is involved.”

The European soccer governing body UEFA have taken little of their busy time to celebrate Nigeria's football golden Queen Asisat Oshoala.

Super Falcons captain Asisat Oshoala was in her utmost best when she bagged three goals for Spanish Giants FC Barcelona Femení in their comprehensive 0-6 away victory over Logrono in the Primera Iberdrola division on Saturday afternoon.

www.nairaland.com/attachments/11098332_5f11577f79c5616e414a313657f5c87b_jpeg7680b580cacd29228b53f9cede73ebb1

Immediately after the game, the Union of European Football Associations through their UEFA Women's Champions League official social media Twitter account acknowledge the excellent performance of the former FC Robo forward who is now the joint-top scorer of the league alongside Jennifer Hermoso.

One could recall that UEFA recognized the fact that Oshoala did well for Barcelona in the UEFA Women's Champions League last season as they were only able to finish as runners-up to Olympique Lyon with Asisat Oshoala scoring a consolation as a substitute in the final.

The treble of goals is her second hat-trick of the season for Barcelona as she also made an assist in the encounter.

Oshoala, who was named the African Women's Footballer of the Year for the fourth time in January, has been on song for the Calatans, scoring 15 goals in her last 10 outings for the Spanish side.

Asisat Oshoala has now scored 11 goals in her last six for games for Barcelona Women's football team.

She has scored 26 goals in all competitions with 20 league goals this season in the Primera division women.

There was a reason she was voted the best Player in Africa despite her Country Representatives not voting for her.

Asisat Oshoala has been on fire for Barcelona this season as she gets another Superb hatrick in the league to Make it 20 goals in the league already this season.

All her hatrick against Logrono came in the second half which proves to be more difficult but a Player of her Calibre, shouldn't be a surprise at all.

Very few Players can boast of double figures goals this season talkless of scoring 20 goals, a lot of Fans already tipping her to win the Ballon d'Or this season.

Might be a little early but she deserves a shout for the Most Prestigious award this year.

I killed him because he didn't buy Christmas clothes for our son - Woman

A private school teacher in Lagos on Tuesday became too emotional and lost control of her temper, thereby committing the greatest offence against mankind.

Jacinta Igboke is currently in police net for allegedly stabbing his former boyfriend, Arinze Ani, to death.

Her plan, our correspondent gathered, was to kill Ani and herself, probably so that they could continue their affairs in heaven.

The estranged lover was to get married to another lady on January 4.

The two of them had an 18-month-year old son outside wedlock, but the parents of the man were not pleased with their son marrying Igboke. They wanted him to marry someone from their village in Enugu state.

According to her, Ani had not been performing his duties over their child. She said the police had one time told him to give him N10,000 monthly for the upkeep of the child.

She, however, stated that Ani would only send N3,000 or N2,000 anytime he likes; adding that all appeals to him to take good care of the child fell on deaf ears.

As Christmas approached, Igboke informed she asked Ani to give her money to buy clothes and shoes for their child, but he refused.

She was angry that Ani could not pay for the child's Christmas clothes but he was spending on his forthcoming wedding.

On Tuesday, Igboke explained she went to Ani's shop at Old Ojo Road, Satellite Town area of Lagos State, to demand money to buy a pair of shoes for his kid. She said she had struggled to buy clothes for the child herself.

While in her shop, an argument ensued. She said Ani pushed her and she picked up a knife in self-defense. "I didn’t know when I stabbed him,” she said.

Sports / Gernot Rohr's New Contract Will Destroy The Super Eagles by justiz5(m): 10:59pm On Nov 18, 2019
Gernot Rohr's new contract will destroy the Super Eagles

www.nairaland.com/attachments/10596088_f60a54e87d757e717336686e7700dac8_jpeg5f55d2fa91f2fe8cf16abc7b0f2ba411

Just when the Super Eagles is starting to flourish again, just when Nigerians have confidence that their darling Super Eagles can take on the best teams in the world and come out flying, just when the Super Eagles have a coach that knows how to get results, the Nigerian Football Federation headed by Amaju Pinnick decided it's time to destroy all these progress and return the team to the dark ages.

Last week Amaju Pinnick announced that there will be a clause in Gernot Rohr's new contract that compels the German coach to call up home-based players to the team, a move designed to frustrate the coach rather than help him excel in the job. With many rumours that the German’s contract will not be extended beyond the summer of 2020, Amaju Pinnick is setting in motion many skim to ensure Nigerians agree with his decision not to extend Rohr’s contract by exerting an external influence that will affect dynamics of the team and ultimately affect results.

With Pinnick no longer a bigger player Africa and the world's football politics, his focus has been restricted and limited to Nigeria and where else to exert more control than the Super Eagles. The German has reportedly been more difficult to control especially after a series of positive results that have won him more respect in the Nigerian football sphere. Pinnick now seems to be devising a plan to remove the German and appoint someone who would be at his wimps.

First, of, Gernot Rohr is not responsible for the development of the Nigerian league, that is the job of Amaju Pinnick’s Vice President, Shehu Dikko and Pinnick himself. The NPFL is dead under them. The league has struggled to attract investment, sponsorship, TV coverage and patronage and now more recently, the league has become a league where champions are selected not won after 38 games. It is simply ridiculous to compare Gernot Rohr with managers of other African countries, not to mention the top leagues in the world. In a continent where the South African Premier League (PSL) can boast of a $68m, about N24.5 billion, in revenue, it is a shame on Pinnick and his vice president that they are now delegating the development of the league to Gernot Rohr.

Ultimately the move to bring NPFL players to the Super Eagles is to promote them, but the Super Eagles is not a market where you sell players; it is where your best and most established players play. The best way to promote home-based players is to first get the league on TV, structure the clubs and create a league that can attract fans and ultimately attract investors.

Gbolahan Salami was said to be the best thing in the NPFL for many years and there were numerous calls for his inclusion in the Super Eagles, his paltry games for the Super Eagles didn't promote his career, neither did it help his career in obscure teams in Kazakhstan and now in the second division in Saudi Arabia.

Social media did more for Stephen Odey, MFM big star, who moved to Zurich and now in Genk; than what Super Eagles call-up did for Gbolahan Salami. It is the ultimate example of what TV can bring for Nigerian league players rather than cheap promotion administrators and players clamour for in the Super Eagles. An escape from doing hard work of correcting and growing the league.

Why would you compel your coach to call up players who are presently struggling to even defeat their African counterparts in continental competitions? Isn't the failure of the home-based Super Eagles to qualify for the African Championship (CHAN) against Togo or the fact that no Nigerian clubs have played in the knockout stage of the CAF Champions League in the last seven years, enough reasons to indicate that the quality in the league is nowhere near good enough for the Super Eagles?

Some Nigerians criticize Gernot Rohr for picking Nigerian players in lower divisions or obscure leagues in Europe, ignoring the NPFL players, yet the best NPFL players are fighting for trials and often failing in these so-called obscure le

Benue State governor Samuel Ortom runs into 150 cows, arrests them for wandering.

Written by Eromosele Ebhomele

The governor of Benue, Samuel Ortom, has decided to personally implement the state’s anti-grazing law by arresting 150 cows accused of roaming the streets.

Legit.ng understands that the governor, who was on an inspection tour, personally arrested the cows after running into them at Iniongun, Wadata area of Makurdi, the capital of the state.

Vanguard reports that the visibly angry governor asked the livestock guards in the area to arrest the roaming cows for onward journey to a unit of the government.

The law concerning ranching in the state states that the animals would be auctioned if the owner cannot meet the fines that would be imposed for violation within seven days.

The governor, who warned livestock owners in the state against violation of the laws, added: “The Benue open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law, 2017 is no respecter of persons and does not accord preferences to any individual or group, whether or not they are Benue indigenes.”

He said the Benue people should be made to pay more fines if they are found to have violated the law they made to foster peace between them and the herders.

“Any herder whether from within or outside who refuse to keep their livestock in ranches would be prosecuted in accordance with provisions of the law,” the governor stressed.

He also urged the people of the state to send useful information to those in charge of implementing the law to make it effective.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, representative of herders across Nigeria, recently apologised to Governor Ortom over the clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

In a statement on Saturday, October 26, the government said the group issued the apology through its national secretary, Saleh Alhassan, on Friday, October 25.

The Ecuador player whose dad walked 12 hours to face Australia at World Cup

Silvano Estacio and his son

Former Ecuadorian footballer Silvano Estacio incredibly walked 12 hours to allow his son to face the Joeys in their FIFA Under-17 World Cup opener on Sunday morning (AEDT).

BY RICARDO SETYON

This story is reminiscent of a movie - one of drama, with a happy ending, after two hours of trouble, obstacles and challenges on the big screen.

While it could end up as a movie, right now it is just an amazing football story, around a fantastic set up of young players that could end up being the next Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

It starts with 37-year-old, ex-professional player Silvano, who's former clubs include Ecuadorian giants Emelec, despite never playing for the national team.

But his son, Silvano Denilson Estacio Mina, 17, was on the verge of realising a dream.

Silvano Senior, who added Denilson to his son's name after the Brazilian 2002 World Cup winner, was famous for his dribbling and talent as a striker.

And just last year, Silvano Junior was the best scorer in Ecuador while playing for Emelec in the capital Quito.

However, just a day before Ecuador was due to depart for the U-17 World Cup, the local National Football Federation found out that Silvano Junior was on the list but had no permission to fly as a minor.

Immediately after finding out the news, Silvano Senior wanted to fly to Quito - located 156 kilometres away - to sign the necessary documents.

But due to public unrest in Ecuador, the airports were shut down and strikes were affecting the bus drivers.

When Silvano Senior finally got a hold of a car, offered by a friend, he received the worst news of the day - road blocks were all over the highway.

There was essentially only one method of transport left.

He decided to take his motorcycle, and leave the small village on the outskirts of Ambato, and try to face the roadblocks on the highway.

At Latacunga, 45 kilometres after leaving Ambato, Silvano Senior was not allowed to go through due to the roadblocks.

He then left his motorcycle by the roadside, and started walking.

All together, it took Silvano 28 hours to reach Quito. 12 hours of those, while solely walking.

Dry lands, mountains and also the famous 'paramo', a desert landscape common in the South American Andes - but all obstacles weren't enough to make him give up on his son.

There were tears of joy once he reached the offices of the Football Federation in Quito.

Once all documents were signed, Silvano Junior was eligible to face Australia and his father's expenses were paid by the local federation, who flew him home.

While he only came on as an 86th-minute substitute against the Joeys, he helped Ecuador hold on for an important 2-1 win.

"These seven minutes (including three as a substitute) were the most important of all my life", Silvano Junior said in tears after the game.

Football is sometimes, in South America, more important than life.

Sports / Ese Odoko: My Son Ogaga Oduko Dropped From U-17 World Cup For Abba Abichi by justiz5(m): 2:33am On Oct 27, 2019
My child was dropped from U-17 W’Cup for DSS boss’ son –Oduko

England-based football scout, Ese Udoko, in this interview with KELVIN EKERETE alleges that his son, Ogaga, was unjustly dropped from the Golden Eaglets squad at the ongoing Brazil 2019 U-17 World Cup for Abba Abichi, son of the Director-General, Department of State Service, Bichi Magaji, after helping the team qualify for the World Cup.

Is it true that your son Ogaga Oduko was dropped for Abba Bichi, son of the DSS boss, Bichi Magaji?

It is true. My son Ogaga was substituted for Bichi Magaji’s son, Abba Bichi, and there is no other way we can point otherwise. Those coaches are the ones destroying Nigerian football. I believe the officials from the top are corrupt as well. It is affecting Nigerian football. The less-privileged kids cannot genuinely represent their country without having a godfather.

But there is a claim that you are just an agent to Ogaga and not his father…

(Cuts in) Ogaga is my adopted son. He lost both parents at the age of 10. I came to Nigeria to do my scouting programme in 2016 for less-privileged talented kids across four states in Nigeria. The final selection was held in Lagos. He borrowed money to come and there I spotted him. He told me his story and I have been taking care of him in my academy since then, along with his two siblings.

How long was your son in the U-17 camp?

I took him for the U-17 trials and he passed. He has been with the team for a long time. He went with them to Tanzania (U-17 AFCON, qualifiers for the World Cup). He was the one that lost the last penalty in the semi-final 10-9 defeat to Guinea in Tanzania. They refused to feature him in the third-place game because of that and the Eaglets lost the match. He is an attacking midfielder, better than what they have in that midfield, but the coaches told me that they would convert him to left-back, as they don’t have one. And that is the only way he can make the team. I told my son to adapt and because of his talent, he adapted and since then he has been with the U-17.

Do you think he was dropped because he wasn’t good enough?

Not at all. When Ogaga was with the national team, he worked hard and merited it. I was about bringing him to the United Kingdom, but I had not finalised the adoption process then. After the process, I felt that he should take a shot at the national team and that will qualify him to play in England. And also, the other players can see that hard work and dedication with your talent can take you to the top. He has been with the team until they came back from Tanzania. During their two months break. I asked for his passport, so he can apply for UK visa, as Arsenal wanted to see him. I told the coach, but they refused to give me his passport. The excuse was that they don’t want to lose him. They felt that if he joined a club in England, he would not want to come back and play for the national team. The boy was angry but I encouraged him to bear it.

Is there evidence that he was dropped directly for Bichi?

Ogaga

He traveled to Turkey for the tournament before travelling to Brazil with the team, but at the last minute he was dropped and was replaced with a player I now believe is the son of the head of security service in Nigeria because the NFF wanted to avoid corruption charges. So, they have to curry the head of security by bringing his son and other officials’ children and dropping talented players who don’t have any backing. I did not know the politics that was played, because I was not there. I know that boy was nowhere before, and suddenly at the last minute he replaced a regular player.

Some are of the opinion that Ogaga was dropped because he wasn’t a regular in Manu Garba’s squad…

My boy is a regular, the only match he did not play (in Tanzania) they lost. There is no way you can tell me that they have another excuse for dropping a regular player. I chatted with the coaches and their excuse was that it is a group decision. I know other players were dropped as well. I felt for my boy and the others, but I need to point this injustice out. It has been going on in the national team camp for too long. He has been with the team for months. Ogaga was in Tanzania and Turkey. He also made the final list of 25 to Brazil.

Did anyone at any point request for money from you to include Ogaga in the Eaglets’ U-17 World Cup squad?

They requested for money before they went to Tanzania. I refused to give anything. I told them, ‘let his talent make way for him.’ After using the boy to qualify, they dropped him without thinking. I know this situation might make my relationship with some Nigeria Football Federation members dented. I have set up a youth league currently running in Nigeria in four states.

Having gone through this experience, would you still allow Ogaga play for Nigeria in the future?

This is what I’m fighting for. I want a situation where talented players in Nigeria can represent their country on merit. I have a mission to raise players with their right ages for the national team to win the 2020 World Cup. This is a big challenge for me moving forward with the mandate. I will still allow him play for Nigeria. These people will not be there forever.

What does the future hold for Ogaga now?

He will be coming for trials with a Premier League club I don’t want to reveal now. Arsenal will still have their eyes on him. They were actually coming to watch him in BraziL. He would have been drafted straight away into their U-19 squad if he had played at the world Cup. A Premier League club is waiting for Ogagga already, but they want me to bring him to the UK first.

How can this issue of dropping better qualified players for more influential players be addressed?

The youth football structure needs to be well organised. The country should be able to watch young players from the age of 15. This is why I am running a youth league in Nigeria. Once coaches make their 25-man list, the regular players selected initially should not be dropped; rather the coaches should adjust a player who is not performing well to the bench. A regular player can only be dropped if they commit a serious offence. When a regular player is omitted from the team rather than dropping them to the bench, it should be questioned and looked into by independent professionals, rather than the officials.

Despite Being Northern State, Benue A Bad Brother, Neighbour Of Fulani Herdsmen -Herders Association

The National Chairman of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Sale Bayari, has slammed Benue State for being a bad 'brother' and 'neighbour' to Fulani herdsmen while commending Oyo State people for accommodating them.

Bayari stated this during a public presentation of views, observation of the proposed grazing regulations bill 2019 by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The presentation was held at the house of chiefs, Agodi, Ibadan.

Bayari said, “From our calculations, one cow will eat grass, drink water, drugs and other maintenance costs to the tune of N1,500 a day.

“Despite Benue state being a northern state, it has been a very bad brother and neighbour of the Fulani herdsmen.

“Ironically, it is Oyo state among Yoruba states that have been and remained our home truly as Nigerians due to the wonderful warm and receptive nature of the great descendants of Oduduwa that the Fulani herdsmen have come to see and accept as their beloved great grandfather too due to their accommodating spirit, nature and character of the people of the Southwest.

“We shall continue to be law-abiding citizens of this state and here undertake to ensure that we fish out all the bad elements among us that are distorting the peace and tranquillity of Oyo state.”

The parliament had proposed the bill as a way of finding a lasting solution to violent clashes between farmers and herders in the state.

The speaker of the house, Adebo Ogundoyin, noted: “There is a need for us to continue to live in peace and harmony, Fulani and the farmers have been living together for a long time ago and nobody ousted his or her boundary or herders grazing their cattle in a way that will destroy farm input."
