Politics / Militants Threaten To Attack Chevron Hqtrs, Lagos, Tank Farm by Juve4(m): 10:48am On May 12, 2016
By Emma Amaize and Brisibe Perez WARRI- NIGER Delta Avengers, reported to have gone underground after the shattering bombing of oil and gas facilities in Warri, Delta State, last week, roared from its hideout, this morning, threatening to not only spill blood, but also attack the headquarters of Chevron Nigeria Limited, CNL, in Lekki-Lagos and its tank farm.

The militant group in an email statement, entitled, “Don’t dare the Avengers,” at about 12.17 am, Thursday, by its spokesperson, Col. Mudoch Agbinibo, stated that it warned CNL not carry out repairs on the Valve Platform bombed by the group on May 5 and reiterated that if government and the company stubbornly disobey the warning, the consequences would be dire. It stated: “From our investigation, Chevron Plc is about to carry out repair works at the Valve platform that was blown by us (Niger Delta Avengers). We made it clear that no repair works should be done until our demands are fully met.”

“Chevron have (sic) been operating in the Niger Delta region for over 40 years and no day has their terminals gone without electricity. While the host communities and villages are all (sic) basic amenities (portable drinking water, schools, hospitals, roads, electricity). They have part with the federal government to undermine the people of the region leaving it to rot. “When we blew the Chevron Valve Platform, it resulted to total blackout in the Escravos Tank farm for more than three hours. If we (Niger Delta Avengers) can do it, just know that we are capable of bringing down your tank farm if you continue with repair works on the blown valve platform,” Col Agbinibo asserted. He added: “Chevron and Nigeria Government are pushing us to do (sic) against our belief. Despite making it clear we are not after innocent human lives but as it is going, we might cause human casualties if they do not listen to us.”

The group warned: “Be informed that if we decides (sic) to strike, it going to be bloody. And the contracting firm going to do the repair works we want you to know that your facilities and staff will be our first casualties.” “Our warning to Chevron is that despite the heavy presence of military in the creeks, it will not stop us from carrying out our operations. We are ready to destroy more pipelines; we will not only destroy pipelines, but will bring the fight to your tank farm and your headquarters in Lekki, Lagos. “If you continue to undermine us and go ahead with the repair works, you won’t see us coming, but we are coming for you,” the Niger Delta Avengers said.

Science/Technology / Facebook Launches Free Internet Browsing In Nigeria by Juve4(m): 9:11am On May 12, 2016
Internet giants, Facebook in collaboration with Airtel, have launched Internet.org Free Basics, a free internet browsing app in Nigeria.

Free Basics is an initiative by Facebook and several other partner companies to deliver zero-rated internet services to the 4 billion-odd people still offline. Facebook reaches out to local telcos and get them to zero-rate certain sites and services that meet Facebook’s criteria.

“Free Basics offers Nigerians, including 90 million people who are currently offline, the opportunity to access news, health information and services like Jobberman that were built by Nigerians and other developers across West Africa — all without having to pay for data,” Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said.

Airtel is Facebook’s telecoms partner in Nigeria. As a result, Nigeria will now 37 countries with Free Basic-activated countries.

“We’re pleased to take this big step forward in our partnership with Facebook, bringing more people online in Africa’s most populous country and helping to further narrow the digital divide,” said Airtel Africa CEO, Christian de Faria about the partnership.

Critics, some of whom have organized under the banner of “savetheinternet. in” say that the internet.org offers neither the entire internet, nor is it a charitable organization, for which .org domain names are usually used. Facebook responded by changing the name of the service in 2015 to “Free Basics”.

Moreover, the critics argue that if Indians and other poor-world internet internet users spend the vast majority of their time within Facebook’s walled garden, that would force other businesses to set up shop on Facebook rather than on their own websites or elsewhere on the internet. This would give Facebook enormous power over competitors and indeed over the internet.

There is some evidence to show their fears are not unfounded: a survey last year found that millions of Facebook users in the poor world don’t realize they are actually using the internet. Facebook’s critics succeeded in getting Facebook to open up access to Free Basics. The new regime allows any business, including competitors, apply to join if they meet certain technical requirements.

Politics / Nigeria Is “fantastically Corrupt”, Buhari Admits by Juve4(m): 4:28pm On May 11, 2016
***says he doesn’t need apology from PM Cameron

By Levinus Nwabughiogu

ABUJA-President Mohammadu has admitted that his country, Nigeria “is fantastically corrupt,” giving credence to the words of British Prime Minister, David Cameron who shared such as a joke with Queen Elizabeth 11 before television cameras.

The president also stated that he would not demand any apology from Camerom from making the comment, saying that he was more interested in the repatriation of stolen assets by Nigerians stashed abroad including the United Kingdom, saying “I need something tangible”.

Buhari is currently in London attending the global anti-corruption summit hosted by Cameron.

President Buhari made the admittance to Sky News’ Diplomatic Editor, Dominic Waghorn in London.

In the 29 seconds chat minutes monitored by our correspondent, Waghorn had pressed president Buhari to know whether Nigeria Nigeria was “fantastically corrupt”, surprisingly, the president admitted.

The chat went this way:

Sky news: Will you like an apology from the prime minister?

Buhari: “No, no not at all” Sky news:

Are you embarrassed by what he said? Buhari: “No I’m not.”

Sky news: Is Nigeria fantastically corrupt?

Buhari: “Yes”

But according the Correspondent, Senators Chukwuka Utazi, chairman, senate committee on anti-corruption and financial crimes and Dino Melaye were not happy with Cameron’s comment on Nigeria. For Utazi, “I am taken aback. I am not happy about it,” while for Melaye, it was “reckless” and “demeaning”.

Crime / Re: Oh My! For Spending 40 Years In Jail Wrongly, US Court Awards African Man $2 Mil by Juve4(m): 10:15am On May 07, 2016
oh my God freedom atlast, people are languishing in Nigerian for crimes they did not commit and after wasteful years nothing is been given to them for compensation.
Crime / Oh My! For Spending 40 Years In Jail Wrongly, US Court Awards African Man $2 Mil by Juve4(m): 9:40am On May 07, 2016
Wow!..An Ohio man who spent nearly 40 years behind bars for a murder he did not commit will receive $2million from the state as compensation for his wrongful imprisonment.

Ricky Jackson, 59, and his friends Ronnie and Wiley Bridgeman were sentenced to death in 1975 for the murder of a businessman after a 12-year-old boy said he saw them commit the crime.

All three men were exonerated in November after the witness, Eddie Vernon, recanted his testimony last year and said he had been pressured and threatened by police to testify.

Jackson, who is the longest-serving wrongfully convicted prisoner, was awarded $1million on Thursday as a down payment, according to Cleveland.com.

The figure is computed from the state’s base rate for wrongful conviction compensation, which stands at $40,330 per year in jail. The number is then adjusted for inflation.
In addition to the tax-free $2million award, Jackson will also receive an undetermined sum of money to account for the wages he lost while in prison, according to his attorney Michele Berry.

And in January a Connecticut man who spent 21 years in jail for a rape and murder he did not commit received $6million in compensation after DNA tests proved his innocence.

But Jackson was rendered speechless and thankful when he heard about the $2million compensation, calling it ‘fantastic’.
‘This is going to mean so much,’ he told Cleveland.com

And no matter the amount of money, Jackson and the Bridgeman brothers all have ‘scars that we are never going to be able to recover from,’ he recently told Fusion.

‘I think the opportunity for justice to be served was lost the day we went to court,’ said Jackson, who said he will never forget the fact that he doesn’t have kids.

But Jackson said he did not feel bitter or spiteful.

‘That’s something that happened. Everyone is going through something in their life. This was our something.’

‘Whatever we lost is gone… we can’t ever recapture it.’

Jackson was only 18 when he was convicted of the May 19, 1975, murder of Cleveland businessman Harry Franks, who was attacked, robbed and shot to death.

The Bridgeman brothers and Jackson had walked passed the crime scene and inquired what had happened. They became the prime suspects not long after.

Politics / Read What President Buhari Is Planning To Mu’azu, Obanikoro, Others by Juve4(m): 11:30am On May 02, 2016
According to Punch, The diplomatic process that will ensure the extradition of suspected looters who have fled the country will dominate President Muhammadu Buhari’s discussions with his counterparts when 60 world leaders meet in the United Kingdom next month.

President would at the summit explore ways of bringing to the country politicians who were being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

It was gathered that the outcome of the summit would speed up the extradition of individuals, including a former Minister of State for Defence, Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro; a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu; and a former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina.

Others are the ex-Petroleum Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke; her son, Ugonna; and a former Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko, whose house was raided in Abuja in January by the EFCC.

Also included are a former Senior Political Adviser to ex-President and Coordinator of Goodluck Support Group, Prof. Rufai Alkali, who coordinated the disbursement of N320m allegedly collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria during the 2015 elections and the immediate past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke, who is being allegedly investigated over $1.1bn Malabu Oil deal.

While Obanikoro, who is believed to be in the United States, is wanted in connection with the alleged payment of N1.45bn to his companies, Muazu is reportedly wanted over disbursement of funds to PDP zonal chairmen. He was reported to be in Singapore.

Alison-Madueke and her son are being investigated for N2.3bn disbursed to some staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission through Fidelity Bank before the 2015 general elections.

While the former minister is in the UK, the whereabouts of her son is unknown.

Findings revealed that some of the pacts that would be signed by the world leaders at the summit would pave the way for the extradition of those who were being investigated.

A senior official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who confided in Saturday PUNCH, said at the sideline of the summit, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, would meet with law-enforcement agencies from 59 other countries.

Politics / We Are Working Hard To Give Nigerian Festivals Prominence – Lai Mohammed by Juve4(m): 10:55am On May 02, 2016
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has restated Federal Government’s commitment to supporting and elevating the nation’s numerous festivals to enable them to contribute their quota to national development, while also preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. The Minister said this on Saturday in Mangu, Plateau State, when he attended the Puus Kaat Festival, an annual gathering of sons and daughters of Mangu to showcase their rich cultural heritage. “The reason we are working hard to give national and international prominence to our festivals and also support our creative artists is because of their potentials to contribute to the growth of our GDP, provide jobs as well as foster peace and unity.

”The Arts and Culture, as well as Tourism sectors are the only ones that are capable of providing opportunities, including jobs, to those who ordinarily would not have been employable, perhaps because of their lack of education. That is why we say the sectors are pro-poor, pro-the-underprivileged and pro-rural. These are the only sectors that import the market to the products,” he said. Alhaji Mohammed said the Puus Kaat Festival, which came a day after the conclusion of the National Summit on Culture and Tourism organised by his ministry, is set to benefit from the far-reaching resolutions made at the summit that included enlisting of festivals into a national calendar, as well as training of festival managers and creative artists. “It is significant that this festival is coming just one day after we concluded a well-attended National Summit on Culture and Tourism in Abuja. Part of the decisions taken at that summit is to ensure that every local government in Nigeria celebrates at least one festival a year, in our efforts to build a national calendar of festivals that will attract people from within and outside Nigeria, just like we have at the Rio Carnival in Brazil and in Edinburgh, Scotland, just to mention a few.

“Also, it was decided at the National Summit that we must build the capacity of the managers of our various festivals through training and re-training by resource persons. I want to assure you that the organizers of Puus Kaat Festival will be among those to benefit from this training. We will also build the capacity of creative artists and adequately equip our various arts and crafts centres across the nation to enable them function more effectively. We will then follow up by creating local and international markets for the products,” he said. It was the second time within a month that the Minister was witnessing a festival in Plateau state, after also attending the Nzem Berom Festival in Jos, on April 15th 2016. The main attractions of the Puus Kaat Festival are traditional dance parade, display of various arts and crafts of the Mangus people as well as showcasing of the Mangu people’s prowess in hunting and farming.
