By Babajide Komolafe LAGOS — The naira, yesterday, suffered its biggest daily depreciation against the dollar as it exchanged for N345 to a dollar in the parallel market. This represents N20 depreciation when compared with the closing exchange rate of N325 per dollar in the market on Friday. But the naira was relatively stable at the official interbank foreign exchange market as the interbank rate stood at N197.47 per dollar at the close of business, yesterday. The naira also depreciated by N45 against the British pound as the parallel market exchange rate rose to N485 per pound, yesterday, from N340 on Friday. Bureaux de Change sources, who confirmed the development to Vanguard, attributed the sharp depreciation to persistent scarcity of the dollar and pound sterling in the market. According to an Abuja-based BDC operator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, “the market is experiencing huge demand for dollars but there is no supply. Even those who have dollars are not willing to sell. The way things are going, the rate might reach N350 per dollar before it stabilises.” This development widened the gap between the interbank rate and the parallel market rate to N147.53 per dollar from N127.53 per dollar last week. The naira has been on steady decline since January 12, 2016, when the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, stopped weekly dollar sale to BDCs. Prior to this action, the naira traded at N265 per dollar in the parallel market. Consequently, the naira has depreciated by N80 in the parallel market since the CBN took the action. The steady depreciation was also aggravated by inability of the CBN to meet foreign exchange demand. Vanguard investigations reveal that the parallel market is being bedevilled by demand for foreign exchange from importers of the 41 items excluded from the official market by CBN last year as well as importers of items not excluded from the official market. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/naira-falls-to-n345-in-parallel-market-2/ |

By Nwaorgu Faustinus The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, said its attention has been drawn to a press statement by the R/S PDP Chairman, Bro. Felix Obuah titled, "Dakuku’s Attack On Odili, Height Of Frustration, Rascality – Rivers PDP Chairman." The R/S APC in a press statement signed by its spokesman Mr. Chris Finebone unequivocally stated that Dr. Dakuku Peterside DID NOT, for all intents and purposes, insult the former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili and his wife, Justice Mary Odili as canvassed in Felix Obuah’s press statement, adding, “Dr. Peterside did not, and still does not, have any reasons to insult or show disrespect under any circumstances whatsoever to the former governor of Rivers State, his wife and, indeed, anyone.” The APC noted that the issue in question is a mere verbatim reference Dr. Peterside made to the public statement of Gov. Nyesom Wike at a church thanksgiving service where he said: “Let me thank our former governor, Dr. Peter Odili [husband of Supreme Court Justice, Mary Odili]. He will call me midnight to tell me what to do....he will say ‘go so so place.’ I took all his advice, and here we are today.” These were the words of Gov. Nyesom Wike. Dr. Dakuku Peterside merely quoted the governor and then concluded his reference to the governor’s speech by saying: “This shocking confession needs no further explanation except for you and other decent Nigerians to further make your fair conclusions." The APC asked Felix Obuah and the PDP: Where lies the insult on Dr. Peter Odili and his wife in the reference Dr. Peterside made to Gov. Wike’s public comment?, maintaining that “indeed, if anyone indirectly insulted the former governor and his wife, it is Gov. Nyesom Wike because of his unwarranted verbal incontinence, drunken boasts and dropping of names of the former governor and his wife while holding discussions with his associates. Some of these same associates of Gov. Nyesom Wike, in turn, take the names dropped by the Governor to public space with its attendant negative perception.” The R/S APC urged Felix Obuah and the PDP to compel Gov Wike to apologise to Dr. Peter Odili and Justice Mary Odili for woefully failing to exercise discretion in his public utterances and needlessly dropping their names while holding formal and informal discussions with friends and associates. The APC assured former Governor Peter Odili and Justice Mary Odili that despite differences in political affiliation, the leadership and supporters of its party will continue to hold them in high esteem as eminent citizens and one time first family of our dear State for 8 years, adding, we believe that nothing can take that away from history. “We urge Felix Obuah, Jerry Needam and their ilk to strive to exhibit maturity and grasp of age-old hallowed principles in statecraft and politics by not painting every political issue in the only colours known to them - motor-park colours”, the statement advised. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/peterside-did-not-insult-peter-odili-or-wife/ |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has described Governor Ayodele Fayose as a threat to the Nigerian Constitution and orderly society. Reacting to Governor Fayose’s attack on Lagos fiery lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) over his position on the alleged election fraud that returned him (Fayose) to power, the party said the eminent lawyer could not have maintained his former position after revelations emerged that Fayose allegedly stole his way to power. Falana had said that Fayose is liable to prosecution in the light of the new revelations linking his victory to alleged electoral fraud through illegal militarisation and illegal printing of sensitive INEC materials through which he won the election. Falana had noted that this was revealed by Fayose himself in the secretly recorded audio tape by Captain Sagir Koli, including revelations contained in the confessions by PDP State Secretary, Dr Tope Aluko. Fayose’s voice was also heard in the tape talking of how collation of the results was done on June 19, two days before the June 21, 2014 governorship election. Falana insisted that Fayose could not hide under immunity to engage in impunity and crime to commit treason to illegally remove a sitting governor. Fayose however responded, accusing Falana of double standards and lack of integrity, having supported his election after the result was announced on June 22, 2014. But in a statement by the APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party said Fayose should shut up and stop insulting Nigerians in his shameless defence of criminal acts that brought him to power. Accusing the governor of using immunity to commit impunity, the party said Fayose was carrying a moral and legal burden in the election that brought him to power, arguing that in a sane society, the governor would have resigned. Arguing that Falana supported the governor’s election based on information available at the time, Olatunbosun explained that the revelations contained in Ekitigate audio tape and revelations contained in the testimony of the PDP State Secretary, Dr Tope Aluko, were mind-boggling and potent enough for the senior lawyer to change his position. Expressing surprise that Fayose was still talking of Falana and American support for the election that has become a butt of jokes locally and internationally, Olatunbosun berated the governor for casting aspersion on Falana’s integrity, saying the senior lawyer is a pride of Ekiti people because of his integrity, scholarship and his fight for the cause of justice. Accusing Fayose of engaging in siege mentality and attacks on his opponents to divert attention from the election fraud saga that brought him to power, Olatunbosun said: “Fayose is jittery and that is why he is stoking violence. He has started attacking individuals in Ekiti State like he did during his first aborted tenure in 2006. “We want to remind Fayose that many of his party leaders, who still have a modicum of integrity, have also left PDP in droves because they could not stand the shame he has brought upon them through the Ekitigate scandal planned and executed by him and some of his cohorts. Therefore, Falana cannot be an exception. “Fayose is being haunted by his criminal past and there is no way he will not meet his comeuppance no matter how he tries to evade justice. “Through his past and present deeds, decent people of the world have since discovered that Fayose is a threat to democracy and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, law and order in the society and everyone knows that there is no way he can operate in a society where the law works.” Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/02/youre-a-threat-to-nations-law-apc-tells-fayose/
