true2god: You ignore all the valid concerns that Muslims have as superstitions, yet I am the one devoid of reasoning. If you cared to read through the thread, you'd have noticed that I was engaging in sane discourse with the fellow above me. Regardless of how superstitious you feel Muslim beliefs are, they have been practicing them for quite a long time. So you should see why they would be aggrieved when they are no longer afforded the opportunity to practice as they have been any longer... But the assumption here is that you are able to comprehend anything you've read so far. |

LordReed: The only reason I think this worked out so well in that said school is because the majority of the population is Muslim. However, I don't see the reason why this shouldn't be viable in Lagos, as well. Though, I think the fear (unsubstantiated or otherwise) of the government is that people will keep pushing the bounds of the uniform till the essence of it is lost because of numerous varieties that may arise. In the state of Oklahoma, all in the name of religious freedom, they approved the construction of a structure with the ten commandments in front of the State assembly building. Next thing you know, a satanic group countered and started constructing their own monument to the devil that they intend to place right next to the ten commandments. Now, two things are happening. 1. Each group is expressing their right to religious freedom on government property. 2. Each group is disrespecting the other, depending on what side you find yourself. That is the reason the government in any multi-religious society shouldn't involve itself with religion. You can read further on the Oklahoma issue here: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/05/05/satanic-group-says-oklahoma-must-give-devil-his-due/ |

EvilBrain1: I do not think you are capable of holding a serious conversation. I'll leave you with this: "With regard to stupidity, I have already said it is of two sorts, one natural, the other acquired; the one effect of ignorance, the other of instruction. Now of these two sorts of ignorance or stupidity, which is the most incurable? The latter. The man who knows nothing may learn; it is only requisite to excite in him the desire of knowledge. But he who is falsely learned, and has by degrees lost his reason when he thought to improve it, has purchased his stupidity at too dear a rate to ever renounce it." - Helvetius |

LordReed: The point of the write up was to suggest a solution to the issue. Clearly, nobody is gonna be satisfied with either ruling. Like I said, personal interpretation. Parents typically try to encourage their girls to wear the hijab from childhood so that they don't have difficulty adopting it when they are older. As for the Muslim voice during the legislation, I honestly don't know. But my assumption is that, being the educated gentleman Fashola is, the government would rather have the uniform maintained and prefers hijab be restricted to Muslim schools that are not government funded just to avoid issues in the future. Same way either side would protest if all the pupils in government school were forced to to perform devotions/prayers in just one religion's way; or religious prayers at all. Separation of religion from government is essential to maintaining sanity in a multi-religious society like ours. |
Religion / Re: Hijab Ban In Lagos Public Schools: The Way Forward by K0ala7(m): 6:26pm On Oct 18, 2014 |
LordReed: Religion is a personal matter and is subject to each individual's interpretations of their relationship to their higher power. The decision of some people not to use the hijab does not change the fact that it is a recognized part of most Muslims' faith. You could say the same for a Catholic nun who covers up similar to the typical Muslim woman, that does not take anything away from the catholic who is not a nun and decides to dress as she deems fit. Like I said, subject to personal interpretation. |
Religion / Re: Hijab Ban In Lagos Public Schools: The Way Forward by K0ala7(m): 5:33pm On Oct 18, 2014 |
LordReed: I don't understand where you're trying to take this. You do not go to an institution funded by private money and complain about their rules when you're free to establish your own. However, you do have a right to demand from your government, to reasonable extents, what you deem as your rights as everybody has a right to equal representation. The government money is also Muslim, Christian, and every religion's money as they are all citizens of Nigeria. So they have a right to protest when they feel discriminated against in a government funded institution. Not necessarily deserving, but they still have the right to. And that is what they are exercising. |

The most important part of an interview is the aftermath, following up. It is important to send a thank you letter/email that appreciates the interviewer's time and then is used to sell them on points you feel they appreciated the most about you. 100 to 200 words. It should be sent within 24 to hours after an interview, not right after (so it does not seem like you wrote it before the interview). 2 Likes |

Let me play devil's advocate here since we can already see that our security can work if the 'right' people are concerned. Now, this report tells me that you can kidnap a relative of the sitting president, or any political leader in Nigeria, really, and get away with it for the better half a year... So what hope is there for a person who travels through Aba and is kidnapped for 100k to 500k..? PS: I am a Yoruba boy, Port-Harcourt bred. So I have a pretty good idea of that side of the country from my 14-year stay. 2 Likes |
Culture / Re: Does Education Really Make People Act Civilized? by K0ala7(m): 9:50am On Jul 04, 2014 |
I have noticed a lot of people on this thread alluding to the fact that an education does not guarantee you civility in a person. However, in an educational setting, however basic or sophisticated, there are rules that people adhere to; the longer you stay in the system, the more adapted you become to the rules. When a person leaves such a 'civil' setting and steps out into the rest of the world where people may not necessarily abide by, or worse still, acknowledge the existence of rules, they are forced to make changes to remain 'functional', even when they do not agree with the practices they are used to. And as are most other things in this world, civility is relative. What I would describe as civil in the USA may be considered as exaggerating civility in Nigeria. A brief example might help. When I am in the university in the USA, it is rather abnormal to find a persons phone ring out loud in class or even at your friends apartment. However, in a lot of Nigerian offices, people are prone to using music or obnoxiously loud music as ringtones. Now, in these offices, it is not courteous to answer a call in the office or on loud speaker. But it is not rude to have your phone ring out loud. A few quotes: "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men." - Douglas Bader "With regard to stupidity, I have already said it is of two sorts, one natural, the other acquired; the one effect of ignorance, the other of instruction. Now of these two sorts of ignorance or stupidity, which is the most incurable? The latter. The man who knows nothing may learn; it is only requisite to excite in him the desire of knowledge. tensor777: Not cheapest to develop, but cheapest for the people who are gonna end up using the rail system... it is currently cheaper to travel by road as compared to travelling by air, it does not necessarily mean the roads are cheap to construct and maintain. Remember government is meant to look out for the interest of its people. |

tensor777: So it still hasn't occurred to you that in a right-thinking economy that wants to modernize their transport they do the obvious first, which is to develop the cheapest means for goods and the masses to move around and carry out their businesses (road and rail). In the same Nigeria that will put a commercial airliner in holding pattern for half an hour (correct me if i'm mistaken) because wealthier people who very well know they could afford to use the military airport think it is a smarter idea to all leave the already hectic PH International at the same time. It didn't start today, and Jonathan had been there for long enough to fix East-west road but his lack of endeavor contributed to his foster mother in law's death. The airports that undergo modernization do not see modernization as installing basic amenities that should readily available at any airport (like air conditioning, proper car parking lot (PH Intl)). Rather, the modernization is seen as using new technologies to create never before existing solutions to problems they face, doing it effectively, in style, something they can be proud of completing...and on time too. 1 Like |

ROSSIKE: Why does Nigeria need 22 airports in the first place? We could have 2 airports in each geopolitical zone and one in FCT and do a better job maintaining those. If it wasn't because of the state of our roads, there is no reason any one should leave his house in port Harcourt an hour before the flight for the airport and then fly for another half hour to 45 mins to Warri. It would be much more convenient to just drive from your house straight here in an hour and a half. This doesn't even factor in the time that you need to add because of the crazy traffic in our cities. 1 Like |

ROSSIKE: Wait till when? The unspecified period they always like to extend projects to? In other countries, they plan out their work so as not to inconvenience the travelers who use the airport and they strive to complete it by the deadline to keep the passengers faith. I live in Oklahoma and Will Rogers World Airport in OKC is far better than MMIA, it is larger, better managed, and more convenient to travel through...but yet it is not qualified to host international flights because of the standards the US of A places on its assets of national pride and importance. |

callmenow: If truth be told, Nigeria deserves better than the indigenous contractors who collect their mobilisations and disappear into the distance. It is a fact that successive Governments misguidedly award contracts to these contractors, who are ill-equipped to build a mud house on MAIN Street Nigeria, who 'freestyles' the job until the next Nigerian administration. The job has started. They should tell the passengers in a timely fashion when the renovations will be concluded, like they do elsewhere in the world. I believe the exterior structures are almost complete. The interior fittings are about to commence. Hopefully, I will be traveling all over the country through an 'accessible' airports. However, in a free world, everyone should complain if they feel 'insulted' by the service or the facilities at any airport. By the way, I was almost arrested once by the Gendarmes at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, because I complained that their 'escalator' has damaged the wheels of my luggage. Complete misunderstanding of course. Racist gendarmes methinks. Exactly! All the countries that have the sweet airports we like to compare MMIA with did not get there by just awarding contract, setting up committee, and then not complaining when the airport wasnt working well. No, they got the top airports because they continuously strive to give their citizens and visitors the best flying experience they possibly can. Nothing but corruption and sentiments is stopping Nigeria from competing against top airports. The first step to solving a problem is realizing that you have the problem... |

Politics / Re: Porthacourt Int, L Airport (pics) by K0ala7(m): 8:37pm On Dec 01, 2013 |
The first pic is just a design. The second though is better looking than what we're used to. As someone rightly pointed out, the airport has not yet been opened for use. The real test of the airport will be seeing how it is run and maintained in order to keep the place i shape, because we lack a maintenance culture in Nigeria. Also, even if this is better than what we're used to using, we can still do better. The nice airports we see all around the world are all due to the respective nations competing to give their citizens and visitors the best travelling experience and I don't think Nigeria should be an exception. If they keep telling us that Nigeria is going to be a top 20 economy by a certain year, we need to see our amenities compete with other top 20 economies by then, because transport is a key part of any economy. But overall, it is nice to see improvements in Nigeria. Looking forward to better. |

Oh, and just another experience from my last time at MMIA. I was just clearing security and the officer went to check something on my passport so i engaged in conversation with another immigration guy. So he notices that I'm sweating and was talking about how a lot of Nigerians who stay abroad and foreigners always sweat when they come through. He mentioned that the air conditioning was down for maintenance, but that he was happy it was down. I asked why and he said, since they have to be there all day and barely move around, the cold gets to them unlike passengeres that have to lug their stuff around the terminal building. I'm not criticizing the officer for his opinion, because it is a valid one and its the reality of his job. Just thought I should share. |

callmenow: The OP does a disservice to the intelligence of the readers who use the airport. I have been traveling through the aforesaid airport for the past thirty years. There is definitely an improvement. The present administration has not taken away the 'good' amenities. Reason being that there has never been any amenities. Time was when we used to arrive in utter darkness after a six hour flight. Last time I ate at this airport, I nearly died from Montezumas revenge. There has been instances when the tarmac light doesn't work either, we will end up leaving Lagos to Europe around three AM instead of ten-thirty PM the previous day. Lagos airport smells because of the environment, the staff at the airport, (security agencies), airline staff and the trolly dollies. These people often sleep at the airport and maintain poor hygiene. Normally when airports are renovated, they are closed until the renovation finishes. This is the case with Heathrow Terminal Two in the UK. The FED could have commandeered MMA2 for the duration of the renovation to MMIA. I understand the operators refused to negotiate with FAAN. We should be grateful that 'some' work is actually being done. Nigeria human content needs to improve it's hygiene, etc. It is not the job of Stella or Goodluck to bathe the Nigerian personnel at the airports. Equally they must not be blamed for the bribery at the airports. I have been paying this for the past thirty odd years with pleasure. The trick is to take some of the on-board liquor and 'dash' it to the immigration and customs, and wish them well. It works all the time. I have also been using the airport as long as i can remember. The airport was not perfect before, but given the span of time that ha passed since it's construction and the 8 years of OBJ, 2 years of Yaradua, and Jonathan's administration....we hae not done well. The last time when i was leaving i had a good dinner in a decent restaurant and i was happy about that. It was air conditioned and they had a TV and comfortable chairs. But int he departure hall, it was the complete opposite, the heat was unbearable, there were air conditions that were not working. The fans that were available were only circulating the already hot air around. Port Harcourt airport has also been an eyesore for the past few years. When i left there last in june, the terminal was under reconstruction and i haven't heard of or seen any indications that the airport has been completed or that people no longer have to get wet under the tarpaulin tents that serves as a makeshift terminal. Any update on PH International is highly welcome. So what I am saying is, though there have been improvements in the Airport here and there. They are not great enough yet to warrant singing unnecessary praises of the administrators of the Airport. We won't have change if we do not continuously call out what we think is wrong with the system. 1 Like |

Just a thought. The last time Asari decided to hold a press conference and promised to rain fire upon the earth if anything happened to Jonathan, there was a video to back it up. Now that common sense is being attributed to him, there is no video. So I don't want to believe this is actually him because of the source and then the lack of video evidence...just to give him the benefit of doubt. game_rod: what attitude? You are one of those who thinks the immigi officials should worship you because you just arrived from abroad? Give them your passport, get it stamped, move on, get your bag, face customs, simple. Which attitude? The attitude i'm referring to is the one i never see when i'm at Houston, JFK or heathrow. They greet you politely and ask questions clearly. They do not mumble and then get angry because you can not hear what they just said. And then the baggage carousels actually let your bags out on time without anyone tampering with the stuff you used your money to buy for your relatives back home. 29 Likes |
