How poor coordination, Angolan girls ruined Eagles in Luanda

In the last three weeks, the attention of millions of Nigerians shifted from the political scene, kidnapping and hostage taking in the Niger Delta to the field of soccer, with all eyes focused on the Super Eagles camping in the 27th Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. From a poor start against Egypt, where the team lost 1-3 to the slim victory over the Squirrels of Benin, down to the last group match against Mozambique and the quarterfinal match against Zambia, it was a big struggle for the 'star-studded' Eagles in the 2010 Nations Cup.

But when it mattered most against the Black Stars of Ghana in the semifinal, the Eagles crashed, leaving behind tales of misdemeanours, with accusations and counter accusations flying all over the team's camp. In deed, the Eagles defeat on Thursday brought to fore pictures of high-level indiscipline in the Eagles' camp. GOWON AKPODONOR, who is with the team in Angola, captured the mood of the players, coaches and FA officials after the defeat.

In the view of Ogun State Sports Commissioner, Bukola Olopade, the defeat of the Super Eagles in the semifinal against Ghana could have been avoided if only there were proper coordination in the team. "I think the Eagles worked against themselves in this competition," Olopade told Nigerian journalists at the Hotel Havalade camp of the Super Eagles in Luanda shortly after the players left for Benguela yesterday for their third place match against Algeria.

"It has been a case of do well today and not doing well tomorrow with the Super Eagles and I feel that we need a total overhaul of the system. I am not saying that Coach Shaibu Amodu should be sacked, but sincerely speaking, he (Amodu) needs an assistant.

"I am saying this because we need somebody who can look officials of the NFF in the face and tell them the bitter truth. We need someone who will be able to coordinate things properly in the camp because from what I have observed here since I came, things are going wrong and no one is doing anything to bring sanity into the system. I slept in this hotel and in a situation whereby players are allowed to have separate rooms for themselves for the purposes of keeping women means that there is no discipline in the camp. This is not good for our national team," an angry Olopade stated.

In sports, victory covers a lot of sins, while defeat on its part brings out the behind the scene dirty deals that transpired in and around the team's camp.

Ever since the Super Eagles lost to Ghana on Thursday, there have been series of allegations here that the players worked against the interest of their fatherland by 'messing' themselves with Angolan girls, even under the nose of their coaches and top FA officials, who were in the same camp with them.

"This is not a hidden matter. Right from Benguela to Lubango, this problem had been on ground. It got to a stage when the NFF had to summon some of the players to find out why they (players) decided to pay for different rooms for their PAs (Personal Assistants) in the same hotel we are staying. But rather than stop or look for another means of relating with their PAs outside the hotel camp, the players continued in their ways and the prize is what we have paid," an official of the team told The Guardian yesterday.

According to the official, majority of the players used their PAs as cover to commit evil in the camp. He said: "What these boys normally do is to hire a separate room for their PAs and use the rooms as meeting point with women. The PAs or brothers of these players will organize women in the room and phone them to come over. One of the players was seen with two women in his room last night. Is that a normal thing to do at a time when millions of Nigerians back home are lamenting over our defeat by Ghana?

"I agree the players are adults, but for God's sake, they should know that things of that nature have its psychological effect on teams, especially when we are out for an assignment. I won't say all the players are involved, but a greater number of them are guilty.

"What baffles me is the fact even the NFF President (Sani Lulu) and all the coaches are aware of this mess and they kept quit. The Chief Security Officer of the team (ASP) Gideon Akinsola is only busy driving innocent Nigerians away from speaking with the players or having photographs with them. Now we have crashed out and everybody is feeling so sad. The players should bury their heads in shame," the official stated.

Signs that the Eagles were not their usual selves started manifesting in their first match against the Pharaohs of Egypt in Benguela, when the Nigerians managed to hold the Egyptians for only 30 minutes and thereafter, struggled in the remaining part of the game, squandering a 1-0 lead to crash 1-3.

The Eagles went on to struggle in other three matches played against Benin, Mozambique and Zambia, before crashing 0-1 to Ghana in the semifinal on Thursday at the November 11 Stadium in Luanda.

Apart from the players, some people are of the view that officials of the NFF and the coaching crew of the Super Eagles should be blamed for the team's poor performance in the Nations Cup.

To such people, the Lulu-led board of the NFF failed in its primary responsibility of good team coordination. "Before we crucify the players, we must ask ourselves some fundamental questions, especially the leadership quality of Sani Lulu and his board members.

"It is not just enough to take a team out for a competition, pay the players allowances and pocket estacodes. The likes of Lulu, Ogunjobi, James Peters and others stayed in the same hotel with the players from Benguela to Lubango and Luanda, yet the players could not be called to order.

"Where on earth do you see players being allowed to take their Personal Assistants to team's camp, not to talk of paying for different rooms for them? In an ideal situation, Coach Amodu and the entire FA members should be made to pay for their improper coordination of the team in this competition," the official stated.

Sports / Egypt Coach Hassan Shehata Reveals Nigeria Approach by kaaz(m): 6:05am On Feb 02, 2010
Egypt coach Hassan Shehata claims he has been approached by Nigeria to lead them at the World Cup in June.

Shehata revealed he had been offered the post on a temporary basis, after leading Egypt to their third successive Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday.

Nigeria were criticised for their performances on the way to finishing third in Angola under Shaibu Amodu.

"They expressed interest in hiring me to take charge during the World Cup," Shehata told TV station Modern Sport.

The 60-year-old also revealed the approach to at least one other Egyptian TV station and it was widely reported in the country's media on Monday.

Shehata added that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had approached both he and the Egyptian FA, but emphasised that the ultimate decision lay with his employers.

"It will be a great honour for me to work [at] the World Cup," he said.

"But the Egyptian FA will have the final word on whether I could work with Nigeria on a temporary basis."

Egypt themselves narrowly missed out on a place at the World Cup after losing out to rivals Algeria in a play-off in Sudan in November.

Shehata is under contract with Egypt until 2012 and is well regarded across the continent.

Amodu himself refused to be drawn on whether he will still be in charge of the Super Eagles at the World Cup in South Africa, following his team's exit from the Nations Cup.

NFF president Sani Lulu Abdullahi confirmed last week that the Nigerians will be carrying out a full review of the team and its organisation - including the coach - in the coming weeks.

Sports / Bonfrere Fancies Nigeria Return by kaaz(m): 6:33am On Oct 25, 2009
Dutchman Jo Bonfrere has admitted to BBC Sport that he is keen to coach Nigeria for a third time.

His intervention will increase pressure on the current incumbent, Shaibu Amodu.

The 63-year-old was assistant coach of the Super Eagles from 1990 to 1994 and then led Nigeria's under-23 team to gold at the Atlanta Olympics.

He coached the senior side at the Nations Cup in 2000 but was sacked in 2001 following defeat to Sierra Leone in a World Cup qualifying match.

Amodu's position has been the subject of constant debate as Nigeria have struggled through their campaign for a place at the global showpiece in South Africa 2010.

They need a win in their final group game against Kenya plus a slip-up by table-topping Tunisia against Mozambique to qualify.

"If Nigeria are interested in having me back, I will be very interested in the possibility of returning 'home'," Bonfrere told the BBC.

"I think my track record speaks volumes [and] I still have an undying ambition to return Nigeria to the good old glory days."

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have said they have no plans to appoint a foreign coach, after the dismissal of German Berti Vogts in 2008.

Yet Bonfrere insists he can revive the Super Eagles from their current troubles.

"It is a shame that no one has ever taken the country to the height I left it eight years ago, though the team is full of great players and great potential," Bonfrere told BBC Sport.

"I watch the team nowadays and clearly understand what is missing, which is why I would prefer to return to my first love - Nigerian football."

Siasia quits youth football

Samson Siasia says he's had enough of coaching youth teams
Nigeria's former under-20 coach Samson Siasia says he will not be coaching any more youth sides in Africa.

His comments come after his side's exit from the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt when they lost 3-2 to 10-man Germany in the second round of the tournament.

The coach now admits that working with young African players is extremely demanding and uninspiring.

He was quick to dismiss suggestions he could take charge of the Olympic side or any Nigerian youth side in future.

"I'm not going to come back to junior levels anymore," he told Punch newspaper in Nigeria.

"I want to progress in life. I have tried the junior levels a couple of times and now I have failed.

"It's difficult to work with young African players as they struggle to comprehend you, so therefore you need a lot of time, if you don't have that you will never succeed.

"In Europe it is a lot easier, the players are brought up from the academies and they learn a lot of things.

"But in Africa the players don't listen, their thinking is low and you have to repeat yourself over and over or they will forget."

In 2005 Siasia won the African Youth Championship in Benin with Nigeria before taking them to second place at the Under-20 World Cup in Holland the same year.

He also won silver at the Olympics in Beijing last year.

His meteoric rise led to calls in the local media and from fans for him to be made the coach of the national team, but he is not thinking about the Super Eagles job just yet.

Instead he wants everyone to back the current coach Shaibu Amodu.

"I don't want to think about that, everyone needs to support Amodu now because it is a crucial time for the team," he added.

"I have some offers that my agent is working on now but nothing is concrete yet.

"I just want to relax, think about my career and see what I am going to do."

Odemwingie wants fans support

Osaze Odemwingie has called for fans to back Nigeria
Nigeria's Osaze Odemwingie has urged Super Eagles fans to back the team in their bid to qualify for the World Cup.

Odemwingie was talking after fans booed Nigeria before their 1-0 win over Mozambique on Sunday.

In order to get to the finals in South Africa the Super Eagles must win their final game in Kenya and hope Tunisia draw or lose in Mozambique.

"I want them [the fans] to send out positive energy, prayers and help us believe as well" he told BBC Sport.

"To play their part in believing that we are going to qualify.

"I want the same atmosphere around the country that we had before the game against Tunisia, because we went to Tunis and got a positive result.

"The atmosphere was very good as they believed in us."

Odemwingie, who was voted Nigerian player of the year on Sunday, says the team was affected by the fans who booed during the national anthem before thegame against Mozambique.

"It was very painful, I didn't expect that, it's sad because I think true football fans are always with the team even if things are rough," he said.

"It did affect us in a way at the beginning of the game, it's something we had to deal with, it disturbed our our concentration and we got irritated.

"But as we looked for a goal we forgot about the other things off the pitch. "

The Lokomotiv Moscow player is still confident that Nigeria can qualify for the World Cup finals especially after Tunisia only beat Kenya 1-0 on Sunday.

"If Tunisia had a convincing over Kenya maybe our hopes would have been less," he explained.

"The performance of Mozambique also gives us hope also gives us hope that they can give a good fight against Tunisia at home.

"What's most exciting is that the top two teams are fighting for the World Cup and the lower two teams are fighting for the Nations Cup, so both games are going to be tough.

"We just have to optimistic not be critics now as we still have chances.

"If we start looking for problems we are just going to spoil what we have done so far."
