This is contradictory somehow.

I'd say we don't need only more equipment. I agree with the others
I see what you mean.

There are 2 line items listed. 1 is for adequate training, and the other is for streamlining of procurement.

Bro it's a madman's job. It is hard to keep your sanity especially when you're not a commission officer.
I have ran into my cousins who were not commission officers so many times and each I always want to cry. I have even told them to not bother issuing salute when they see me. They have enough on their plates already.

Let me stop here before I say too much.

But to God bro, if you have seen what I have seen, making things happen out of nothing, walahi we deserve your praise and not condemnation.
I don't deny the sacrifice of our soldiers.

I'm saying that the men cannot give what they don't have.

The military has to be empowered with the right kind of training and constant re-training, as well as rotation from the field at a max service period of 12 months.

Just buying weapons does not solve anything if they don't have the right training and morale.

Someone made a mistake. It's an embarrassing setback but I don't think it reflects poorly on the troops I think rather it shows the ingenuity of the enemy and we should adjust accordingly. Whatever training you bring onboard will still be tested and bested by an enemy seeking to survive. It's both ways training and equipment.
We cannot continue to live in denial, some KLTVs were lost pretty quickly in combat, same as the ISOTEX LAV.

Our soldiers often show a high level of unprofessionalism, posting and sharing videos on social media from AOR far too often.

I honestly pray it's training Sha, because that can be rectified almost instantly once we are ready. There are several contractors around the world offering very efficient training for a little bit of money. In fact, if we beg well, US/UK will be willing to train our recruits for free for some time.
But my concern and query being lack of motivation, lack of trust between troops and officers and very low morale can ruin the army forever if not quickly tackled from the root cause.

The weapons are deliberately being abandoned!!
The terrorists are far more ill-trained and far more ill-equipped than NA troops yet you hardly see them abandoning important assets. From the video NAF released of the attack on marte, you could even see them trying to tow some of their guntrucks that could still be repaired away even while NAF assets were hovering overhead.

Exactly 1:16
I believe there's an institutional crisis in the army. Our soldiers on video always look and sound so unprofessional.

First I thought it was a one off thing, but with each video, it seems much deeper rot has taken place.

I presume if we disband the Nigerian Army today or utterly change its profile we may see the irony of this statement. We can raise a new branch of fighting forces like the US marines with a whole different concept of fighting to help the army.
We don't need to raise a new branch of fighting forces, we already have to many armed individuals parading across Nigeria with conflicting mandates.

72 MSF and AFSF shouldn't have been disbanded. One would think that AFSF and 72 MSF would have grown in capacity by now.

We cannot keep buying equipment and sending to the army, then that equipment ends up in the hands of the insurgents. It's counter-productive.

You lose equipment in war, but the high rate of loss of equipment in the army is abnormal.

Respectfully I disagree
They need more equipment
12 xMI-171e to ferry troops
12 more SURVEILLANCE DRONES ensure 24 hour intel over the most attacked zones
The TUSCANOS are coming.
please if you don't believe me , we need to get grid of every single think skinned Toyota hilux and yellow buckets replace them with 500APCS and
1000MRAPS.
It takes 15 years to get to MAJ -15-20 to get to LT.COL we cant keep losing LT.COLS TO IEDs
All these equipment would result to nothing if the troops to man them are poorly trained and organized.

It's not rocket science, it's not about buying equipment.

Just this week, we saw brand new MRAPs, not yet driven captured by the insurgents. Not only did they capture them, they went on to attack and dislodge an outpost defended by a T-55 and BTR-4E.

You are on point brother.

The Nigerian Army need good training. They can learn from the Airforce. Sadiq Abubakar invested heavily on training of personnels and we see results.

I will still prefer FG spending more on Airforce and Navy than the Army.

The army is full of untrained and irresponsible military men.
Exactly I prefer more funding for the Air Force and Navy than the army.

Until there is a dramatic shift in training and organization Air Force and Navy should get the funding.

Right amount of equipment, training, standardized procurement and the right political backing.

$1.3 billion a year in US military aid, plus sugar daddies in the UAE and Saudi, and Egypt's navy can stroll in the Mediterranean thus:

3× Type-209/1400mod submarines
2× Type-033 Romeo-class submarines
2× Mistral LHDs
2× FREMM Bergamini-class frigates
1× FREMM Aquitaine-class frigate
2× Gowind-class corvettes
2× Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class Frigates are hand me downs from America.

With the Egyptian military controlling more than 50% of the Egyptian economy, including gifts from rich Gulf states, they can afford to afford a lot of military equipment.

However despite the investment in hundreds of fighter jets and helicopters security in the Saini and ISIS are running rampant.

I totally agree with you my brother. I was simply speaking 'tongue -in-cheek' when referring to Nigeria getting it's own millitary 'sugar parents'- lol!

Seriously though, we should get over our 'fixation' on acquiring western millitary equipment (with the attendant strings attached/exposure to possible sanctions or embargos etc ) and look East towards countries like China and Russia for the acquisition of capital millitary platforms.

The recent purchase of the JF-17 block 2 fighter aircraft from Pakistan and the two P-18N Ocean Patrol Vessels and subsequent VT-4 Main Battle Tanks from China are a good case in point. Provided you have your money, these countries will supply you with comparatively good millitary equipment - no strings attached.

As the late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe once said- 'the Sun RISES in the East and SETS in the West'
Our soldiers don't need more equipment.

What we need is good training and a standardization of procurement process.

Our President shows no empathy, he's cut off from the reality of today's Nigeria. Presidents before him Jonathan, Yar'Adua, Obasanjo even Abacha would have addressed the Nation by now.

Things are getting very bad, getting seriously out of hand. Isn't there a way we can invite contractors or colonial powers to help? We can't just keep deceiving ourselves to be a big country, we need outside hands to stabilize this situation.

In fact, at this point, all infrastructure construction and non essential expenses in Nigeria should be suspended and money channelled to security.
We need PMCs from South-Africa, security has gone completely out of hand.

We need to bury our heads in the sand, and do the right thing.

Nothing is stable, I don't support giving the military more money, we should have a separate agency which is responsible for procurement and servicing of military equipment in the open.

The military has proven to be very incompetent.

We are just like the Iraqi army, but at least Iraq army have the feared Golden Dawn Division (Special Forces unit).

In Nigeria we had 72 MSF, we had AFSF effective units that were shut down because of politics and utter foolishness.

The vehicles are usually carried in a convoy.

Let us tell ourselves the truth, the Nigerian army is an ineffective fighting force. The army is moderately equipped, but poorly trained and poorly organized.

Deep down in our hearts, we all feared a scenario were the VT4 Tanks are captured by the terrorists.

It's just a terrible, terrible situation.

Greetings Tochex 101. I hail you!

Joscoflex - respectfully neither NNS Centenary or NNS Unity have missile capabilities.

Nigeria in it's 'penny wise pound foolish' wisdom, purchased the very basic export version of the Chinese Type 056 Corvette armed with only a 76 mm naval gun, 30mm and 20mm cannons. In Nigerian service they are classed as OPVs (P-18N).

The Algerian variant (currently under construction) as well as the versions purchased by Bangladesh are armed with missiles for ASuW. I guess you get what you pay for!
You're quite ill-informed, it's shocking to read.

Nigeria bought an Offshore Patrol Vessel based off the Type 056 Corvette. If we need a missile carrying corvette, we would have bought one.

Algeria does not have the Type-056 in service, Algeria has C28A corvettes in service.

No, you buy what you need. It's is ridiculous for a mother of 5 to buy a 2 door saloon car when she actually needs a mini-van.

Why does the Nigerian Govt like buying capital millitary platforms peicemeal and in insufficient numbers?

Case in point - South Africa bought 4 Meko Valour Class frigates and 3 Type 209 submarines in one transaction. Egypt is buying FREMM Frigates and Mistral LPDs for fun ..not to talk of Gorwind and Meko Class corvettes. Algeria buys MEKO Class Valour frigates from Germany and corvettes from China in substantial numbers.

Nigeria is making noise over a sole destroyer as it's replacement Flagship? Haba!

There are 3 operational naval commands (Western, Eastern and Central). The Nigerian Navy should be given the funds to purchase at least 6 well armed OPVs (with missile capabilites), 3 Meko 200 'Valour' Class frigates with similar armaments as those purchased by Algeria and at least 2 Type 52D frigates from China.

Let's be absolutely clear- Nigeria currently has no navy, just a well equipped Coast Guard with a number of in-shore patrol craft (Shaldags, and OCEA PF72 patrol boats etc).

The hand-me-down Hamlilton Class ex -Us Coastgaurd long patrol vessels - NNS Thunder and NNS Okpbana, have no missile or ASW /ASuW capabilities whatseover. The OPVs purchased from China - NNS Century and NNS Unity have no missile, ASW or AsuW capabilies either- and these are supposed to be our capital shipshuh NNS Aradu (our current Flag ship) for all intents and purposes has been reduced to a training vessel with all it's missile capabilites removed. The newly acquired NNS Lana is a Hydrographic Survey Vessel and is not armed.

Senegal is currently in the process of building naval vessels in France will soon (by 2022) have FACs with missile capabilites and thus become the only navy in West Africa with such vessels...and the Nigerian Navy ..sorry Coast Guard will then be caught napping!
The most likely reason Nigeria continues to buy military equipment in piecemeal numbers is down to money & funding.

If the funding is there, military procurements would be much better.

South-Africa - South-Africa bought all that military equipment using loans. In Egypt case, the army controls a huge proportion of the economy, procurements are made through loans and external funding partners like Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Unlike South-Africa, Nigeria has never borrowed to fund the military, in many cases I think this is a right strategy, but the military could do with extra-budgetary funding and funding from other government agencies like in the case of NIMASA.

Nigeria has a well equipped Navy for the threats it currently faces, this is a fact. Our threats which are present and real are mainly from pirates, oil bunkering, sabotage and kidnapping at sea.

I don't see how buying a Frigate improves our capabilities to fight crime at sea.

Let's be absolutely clear - Nigeria has a moderately equipped Navy ( not a coast guard), the responsibility of our Navy is to protect Nigeria's territorial waters against external and internal aggressors and to ensure the free passage of trade and commerce at sea.

Egypt, South-Africa all use hand me downs, there is nothing wrong in accepting aide from super powers.

NNS Centenary and Unity have no missile capabilities because they were not purchased for firing missiles at pirates at sea.

Yes, NNS Centenary, Unity, Thunder, Okpabana and Prosperity are our capital ships. They were procured to fill roles required by the Nigerian navy and they are all doing that well.

NNS Lana is a Hydrographic ship, NNS Aradu ( poorly maintained) is far past it's prime. Hence a requirement for a replacement.

The Senegalese situation and the Nigerian situation are not the same thing, each country has it's own peculiar security need, with threats assessed and solutions fashioned to deal with these security assessments.

You don't make post for the sake of it, you need to understand the security situation of each individual country.

New Zealand does not have a Fighter Jet fleet.

You need to be better informed.

IMHO
Nigeria should return to Germany there is Good Solid History there.
They can implement a Contract whereby say after 10 years there will be a System upgrade of both Electronic and FCSs and Missile Systems.
For such a FlagShip . Nigeria must be very deliberate who Should not be in the running to build a Ship that would costs in the neighborhood of $250-$300M
The only other Country that should be considered is China.
There is good history there also. There should be an understanding of a Timeline with what type of TOT will be given to NN Engineers.
This has to be part of the package.
Germany and China would naturally be our main options.

There was supposed to be a transfer of technology contract for the second OPV (NNS Unity) , but I don't know what happened.

The ship was supposed to be completed in Calabar.
