Covert1: Please nobody crucify me but I must say the truth where it's due, President Buhari may have terrible economic and political policies but in funding military acquisitions he gets an A.
I'm not sure with the previous administration will not be asking now where the money is. President Buhari came in and immediately gave approval for the JF-17s and thanks to President Donald John Trump paid cash for the very powerful and advanced CT/COIN A-29 Super Tucanos plus other acquisitions across board for the military, ONSA and NIMASA.
The current defense minister deserve commendation for effective leadership. I agree, Buhari has very terrible economic and political policies. He has done really well in funding the military, especially taking into account finance available. The previous military chiefs have also judiciously used procurement funds, especially the Air Force and Navy. |

iblawi: Common with 4th / 4++ generation aircraft. SAAB gripen C/D of SAAF have similar capabilities.
Nothing to prove JF-17 is better than gripen C/D as their capabilities are very similar. The gripen having technological advantage in some areas such as AESA radar, lower RCS and better engines which gives gripen an edge over JF-17 thunder ⚡. That doesn't mean the JF-17 cannot bring down the gripen in combat. Gripen which SAAF does not have AESA radar, there is no evidence it has a lower RCS as the JF-17 and it's engine is not better. Both Aircrafts have very similar characteristics, the Gripen C/D is slightly better but not by much. |

Stephandesward: The jf 17 we have is 4+ generation, to be declared a true 4.5 generation, it needs to be at least 4++, where by it has 5 generation avionics e.g su35, mig 35, f16 block 21, f15 silent eagle, proposed f21(proposed advanced f16 for india), the most recent gripen and a few others......our block 2 isn't 4.5, even the cockpit, shows it isn't 4.5 I don't know how anyone can refer to the JF-17 Block II as a 4.5 gen aircraft. |

Hennynitan: Hmmmmm... So should we believe kabe or the Nigerian air force pilot that is flying the jet? If the pilot is wrong then it's a disgrace to the air force that its pilot don't know the type of aircraft he was trained to fly. Like that should be a basic 101 knowledge in his training course for this jet You don't need to believe me. Carry out your own independent research, if any credible link you post refers to the Block II as a 4.5 gen aircraft, I will retract and issue an apology. |

fabselad: LOL you amaze me bro. hahahah. So a pilot can't make a mistake due to being carried away by the euphoria of the ceremony. Some is telling you a the only JF17 considered as Gen 4.5 is block 3 not block 2 and you still argue. the only block 3 manufactured is still been tested. Show which article would call a JF17 block 2 a 4.5 gen aircraft. Soon you would start comparing those JF17s with SAAF SAAB Gripen.LOL The Block II JF-17 and SAAB Gripen C/D are in the same class. Light weight and 4 GEN. |

Covert1: Really, are you serious, how dare you! Kabe1 just claimed on Nairaland a fighter pilot don't know the machine he is flying and he kabe1 knows better. Well thank God I have enough sense to know you have just made a full time mockery of yourself before the whole world. Therefore your assertion is not only wrong, amateurish, ignoble, ignorant but patently irrelevant and of no consequence. You can accept what works in your world to sleep.
That fighter pilot migrated from the F7-Ni to the JF-17N Thunder and knows exactly what he is saying without mincing words and I believe him totally. When you graduate first from basic flying and prove it then I'll listen to you. Right now you are nothing more than just an internet military enthusiast who is ignorant. What is the point of this rant? The JF-17 is classified across the world as a light weight 4th generation aircraft. This designation would not change until the block 3 enters service. |

Covert1: The NAF JF-17 is a 4.5 GEN Jet. Pls be specific. The pilot is a seasoned aviator to know enough not to say otherwise in world view. The only 4.5 JF-17 available anywhere in the world is a flying prototype currently stationed at Catic in China. It's not in the Pakistani air force, Chinese Air Force and certainly not in Nigeria. That pilot was wrong to refer to the JF-17 as a 4.5 gen aircraft. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by kabe1: 9:09pm On May 20, 2021 |
Covert1: That documentary showed you installation and activation modules not the active cockpit. The important aspects of this Jet are still classified. You can't claim anything to the contrary. Stop trying to be smart by half. You claimed NAF did not show cockpit and MFD. I proved this was false, you're now shifting goal post. |

SuperSixSeven: I have considerable doubts about the gen 4.5 claim. It remains to be seen how this Chinese aircraft made in Pakistan is going to perform, keep in mind the F7 was disaster for the NAF. Unfortunately, there is not much user feedback from JF17 export customers available. At least we got a platform that was designed with the intend to be a multi-role fighter with a broad range of state of the art Chinese weapon systems integrated. It can, therefore, be said that the NAF has achieved some progress in becoming a more capable Air Force. As mentioned in an online article elsewhere the small number of aircraft inducted will certainly come with the price of low availability rate until more platforms will join the service. The JF-17 is an important platform for the NAF, however Nigeria needs a minimum of 15 aircrafts to make a considerable difference in combat. Super Tucanos are a more important platform for the Nigerian Air Force considering numbers and employability. I think the JF-17 would primarily be used for Air Interdiction operations. The JF-17 brings significant enormous capabilities for us, we can leverage on significant Chinese weapons capability upgrade, we can also count on the support of the Pakistani Air Force. |

Sizzorkay: And who might we be hiding those from? Cockpit? hmm. an enemy wont have a hard time getting all that info if they need it. I doubt there is anything top secret about this jet Cockpit's of 5th Generation fighter jets are usually classified. The F-22 cockpit used to be classified. The SU-57 and J-20 cockpits are still classified. The JF-17 is a light weight fighter jets, all information about this aircraft including what it's cockpit looks like is generally open information. It's a capable jet, but it's not a high end fighter like the SU-30 or MIG-29. In fact NAF already showed what the Jet's cockpit looks like in their recently released documentary. |

There's currently no JF-17 in service anywhere in the world that uses an AESA radar. Nigeria has bought 3 units of JF-17 Block II. The JF-17 is a 4 GEN fighter jet. Lurker4Long: I find it interesting that Sierra Nevada submitted both M28 and Super Tucano for this programme. Oh well, hedging their bets.
And in other developments:
"Three A-29s are being delivered to AFSOC later this year, but not for Armed Overwatch. They will be used to train 6th SOS instructors for Combat Aviation Advisor embeds with foreign A-29 operators."
Personal opinion, not a reflection on Super Tucano, which I think is a superb platform: I'm always wary when countries export weapons which they themselves have rejected in open competition. That goes for SA, Russia, Turkey, China and all other arms exporters. This is a funny comment. So can you explain to us why the Rooivalk has lost all tenders and competitions it has been involved in despite it been in service with the SAAF? Let me make something clear the A-29 Super Tucano is a fantastic aircraft, it is in fact the best COIN, LIWC aircraft in service today. It in service with over 20 countries across the world including the US military. For reasons we are not aware of, it hasn't been selected for the next round of tendering, however this doesn't take away the fact it is the best and most widely used COIN aircraft today. I know what you're doing there with China, but the JF-17 has never been considered by the Chinese because it can't fill any role in the Chinese air force. The J-10 which the JF-17 shares so many similarities with is already in service with the PLAAF, so why would the Chinese go for the JF-17? Countries purchase defence equipments according to their security needs. A good example is Nigeria and South-Africa, while South-Africa has gone for a 92 meters ship to replace SAS protea, Nigeria has gone for 2 ships one 60 meters and the other 35 meters to replace NNS Lana. Again, this reflects on need and requirements. |
