The fighting did not subside until about noon on Tuesday with some of the residents alleging that those involved in the fight may have been brought into the area from elsewhere. 

Elombah.com gathered that the Police in Kafanchan could not contain the situation as youths from surrounding villages teamed up and entered the town around midnight to take on the alleged CPC armed men.

The gory scale of the massacre that swept Nigeria days after its presidential election has been revealed to Elombah.com. Whole sections of towns are burned out, the smell of rot is in the air, and people are escaping with whatever they can carry across the rural lands that separate Nigeria's Christian in the south and Muslim in the north.

Residents told us the number of death from this crisis could number in Hundreds if not thousands. An eyewitness told me that the figure is grossly under-reported especially in Kaduna State. “I personally counted more than 240 bodies buried in mass graves in Zonkwa and Kafanchan”, he said.

 Government officials remain hesitant to offer death tolls for fear of sparking more violence.

 

Initially,,journalists were barred from going into Kafanchan and other parts of Southern Kaduna. "The Chief of Army Staff that was there yesterday barred journalists from taking pictures, The CNN journalists was also stopped from taking pictures".

After Saturday's election, violent protests erupted in cities throughout the north. That rioting immediately took on religious tones, as rioters burned churches and attacked Christians. Christians thus retaliated by burning mosques and attacking Muslim neighbourhoods.

One burned mosque outside the hard-hit city of Kaduna bore expletives written within the burned remains targeting Islam while extorting Christianity.

Even before the violence hit, young men gathered around a ballot counting in neighbouring Katsina state, chanting "God is Great" in Arabic as they say "Sai Buhari".

During a tour of Kaduna state Thursday, Associated Press journalists travelling with Nigerian military leaders said they saw the religion-focussed violence continue. In the town of Maysirga, rioters burned mosques and houses, while churches suffered no damage.

But a Nigerian in the company of the foreign journalists equally told elombah.com  the damage occurred on both sides. He confirmed the scale of destruction.

In Jos Plateau State, there was an attack in Ryom LGA injuring 4 and one matcheted to pieces. The attack occurred 10pm and 2am on Thursday night. In a village named something like Bachit

The victims were suspected fulani rustlers. one military comander confirmed there was an attempt to rustle cows in the afternoon but was thwarted.

Elombah.com was also told of the arrest of a Retired Army Gen in southern Kaduna who was shot leading the reprisal attacks. We were told investigations are on.

I was told that what happened in Southern Kaduna was beyond description, an open warfare between locals and the Fulani's, with many lives lost. “The Muslims started at about 12 Midnight to 2am using sophisticated weapons but the local organised and repelled them. They went further than just repelling and dislodged them from the nearby settlements”.

 

“In southern Kaduna, Kafancahan precisely but by Thursday it had extended to Kwoi and Zangon Kataf”.

In Kafanchan, gas stations lay burned as the curious gathered on the street to see the convoy. Both mosques and churches were also razed to the ground, as were election offices for the ruling People's Democratic Party, which has controlled Nigerian politics since the nation became a democracy in 1999. Whole neighbourhoods and markets sat in smouldering ruins.

Military officials stopped at a police station in the town, where several hundred refugees — all Muslim — were taking shelter. In Zonkwa, where witnesses say several hundred died, as many as 1,000 Muslims sought refuge at a police station.

Brig. Gen. Isa Raphael, an army spokesman, told The Associated Press that officers wanted to "see the truth on the ground."

"It's unfortunate and unwarranted, that's just all I can say," Raphael said of the violence.

What happens next appears unclear. Election officials hope to hold state gubernatorial elections Tuesday, with two-day delays for Kaduna and Bauchi states because of security concerns there. Federal authorities say more than 65,000 people have been displaced across the north since the violence began.

Those able to leave filled the highway out of Kaduna on Friday morning, their possessions crammed into vans and automobiles, idling carefully past armed soldiers who were peering inside each vehicle to escape feared future attacks.

The youths reportedly used bows and arrows, cutlasses and sticks to slow the advances of the attackers in some areas but many churches and homes of Christians were complete razed.  

Observers say there is a sickening familiarity to what is now unfolding in the northern cities. When I lived here, I saw the same scenes in 1999 and 2000 in Kano, Kaduna, but also in southern cities like Sagamu and Aba. And, of course, those with longer memories, will remember the massacres of 1966. 

President Jonathan, to his credit, had the courage to draw that link himself, saying these “acts of mayhem are sad reminders” of “an unfortunate civil war [that] as a nation we are yet to come to terms with”.

These events are so sad because they help to unpick the fabric of Nigeria as a nation. 

Take the city of Kaduna, for example. Before the dreadful Sharia riots of 2000, different religions and ethnic groups shared neighbourhoods. But after all the violence and killing, those mixed neighbourhoods have unravelled, and Kaduna is now a city largely divided between respective Muslim and Christian halves.  

To the nation's president and his top political rival, however, the rioting evokes memories of the nation's bloody post-independence disorder and the Nigerian-Biafran War.

"These acts of mayhem are sad reminders of the events which plunged our country into 30 months of an unfortunate civil war," President Goodluck Jonathan said in a recent nationwide address.

"As a nation we are yet to come to terms with the level of human suffering, destruction and displacement, including that of our children to faraway countries, occasioned by those dark days."

There are stark differences between today's violence and that of 40 years ago. Those dark days began with what many thought would herald a new beginning for West Africa — Nigeria's independence from Britain in 1960. A civilian government led by Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa promised change in the oil-rich nation, though his administration quickly became known for graft.

Then a 1966 coup led primarily by army officers from the Igbo ethnic group of Nigeria's southeast shot and killed Tafawa Balewa, a Muslim northerner, as well as the premier of northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello. The coup failed, but the country still fell under military control.

Northerners, angry about the death of its leaders, attacked Igbos living there. Historians say tens of thousands of Igbos died during that period, while others fled back to their southeastern homelands. There, separatists formed the breakaway republic of Biafra.

Nigeria thus plunged into a civil war that saw more than 1 million people die, the first images of skeletal African children broadcast on televisions around the world.

In today's Nigeria, many northerners wanted the country's ruling party to nominate a Muslim candidate this year because Jonathan — a Christian from the south — had taken power only because the Muslim elected leader died before finishing his term.

Under an unwritten power-sharing agreement in the ruling party, the presidency should have been held for another term by a northerner because a southerner had it for the first eight years of democracy in the nation. However Jonathan prevailed in the ruling party's primary and became its candidate for president.

Many did the same 40 years ago.

Nigeria has a compulsory youth service, the National Youth Service Corps. Established in the aftermath of the civil war, the NYSC is intended to foster a sense of nationhood. 

The theory is commendable; young people out of university are sent to different parts of the country to meet other Nigerians and gain useful work experience. 

But in this election campaign many young “Corpers”, enlisted to help in the voting process, have been targeted and attacked, and several have been killed. 

In practice, many Nigerians are now extremely nervous about their children serving in other parts of the country, and those with political or financial influence often do their best to ensure this does not happen.   

 

What is frightening is the scale of planted misinformation and propaganda. Rumours have been circulated in Northern Nigeria of the Hausa's being massacred in the South, in a bid to ignite reprisal killings in the North and vice-versa, so that the whole place will go ablaze.

The fear is that this may be a rehearsal for a military coup.

Reports say this week’s violence started with attacks against political leaders and traditional rulers, and later developed into ethnic and religious clashes. And it is the Nigerian elites, (of course not just in the north), who have a lot to answer for. In the event of crisis, the elites have much to lose

For decades they have enriched themselves, whilst an ever-growing army of unemployed young people struggles to survive. Worse, some leaders have used ethnicity and religious identity when it suits them, cynically unleashing a monster they cannot control. 

President Jonathan can be under no illusions about the scale of the task before him. In parts of the south, particularly in the Niger Delta, he is seen as a messiah, who will suddenly deliver a rapid improvement in living standards. 

In parts of the north, he is viewed with suspicion, by a region that believes it has been robbed of power. 

Barnaby Phillips writing on AlJazeera said “Nigeria has a long-proven ability to pull back from the brink, and stumble on. But the events of the past few days show that the country is desperately in need of a new kind of leadership”.

 

Tuesday elections appears threatened, as many youth corpers have fled the area, and vowed never to return.

(AFP) – KANO — Nigerian security forces were on high alert on Friday ahead of next week's state governors' polls after a surge of deadly unrest following President Goodluck Jonathan's vote win last weekend. A Nigerian rights group, Civil Rights Congress, has put the death toll at 246 based on what it says are reports from a network of coordinators, though officials have declined to verify any figures.

"There are tales of continued attacks in rural areas because the policing is concentrated in the urban centres, while rural areas are vulnerable," said Shehu Sani, the head of the organisation.

Authorities have refused to provide a death toll from the violence, citing a fear of reprisals and the difficulty of coming up with an accurate number, with reports of bodies thrown in wells, burnt beyond recognition or immediately buried.

Military patrols and curfews have largely restored calm, but many of the estimated 60,000 displaced were seeing conditions worsen at the police and military barracks where they had taken refuge.

A Red Cross official also spoke of a "disturbing" situation in the south of Kaduna state, where heavy clashes had broken out between Christians and Muslims earlier in the week that police were unable to control.

Kaduna state, where Vice President Namadi Sambo is from, is majority Muslim, but parts of its south are mainly Christian.

A community leader from the south of Kaduna has said "the killing was unbelievable and the destruction is colossal."

Jonathan said in a televised address to the nation on Thursday that this week's violence was a reminder of the events that led to the country's 1967-1970 civil war, calling it "more than mere political protests".

"Clearly they aim to frustrate the remaining elections. This is not acceptable," he said of the rioting that began sporadically over the weekend before quickly spreading throughout the country's mainly Muslim north.

He said security was being tightened nationwide and vowed that Tuesday's state polls in Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer would go ahead.

The electoral commission later in the day however delayed the elections in the hard-hit states of Kaduna and Bauchi to Thursday in a bid to allow tensions to further subside.

Jonathan, a southern Christian, defeated his northern rival, ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, who has alleged rigging but has dissociated himself from the violence.

The election exposed the country's deep regional divisions. Nigeria's 150-million population is roughly divided between Christians and Muslims and has some 250 ethnic groups.

The mainly Muslim north has long been economically marginalised compared to the oil-rich south, which is predominantly Christian.

The International Criminal Court prosecutor meanwhile announced he was probing the violence to determine whether it had been planned or organised.

The rioting occurred despite what many observers have described as a reasonably well-organised election, marking a major step forward for a country with a history of deeply flawed ballots. They also note, however, that major problems remain.

⁠Youth Corper, Ukeoma Ikechukwu Confirmed Dead

Update 1-The Missing National Youth Service Corp, NYSC member in Bauchi, Ukeoma Ikechukwu has being confirmed killed. A facebook posting by 'Hope for Nigeria' said he was  killed by Buhari/Bakare supporters. The Bauchi state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Amana Abakasanga, in a similar development had confirmed the death of 4 corps members and added that 26 out of 51 corps members posted to Jammare, Giade, Misau, Azare, Dambam and Itas Gadu areas were rescued by the police and another 20 still missing.

elombah.com join the calls appealing to the Bauchi state government, NYSC secretariat, the Police and all relevant Agencies and Authorities, to do a proper audit of the Corps member serving in the Bauchi state and ensure adequate security for the surviving ones. For those of them that might chose to leave the state to safer towns, adequate provisions should be for their transportation, clothings and other basics, as most of them have lost all their properties to the hoodlums.

The death of Ukeoma Ikechukwu has intensified calls for all NYSC Staff to be wthdrawn from Northern Nigeria.

A concerned Nigerian, Dominic Ogbonna said: "Nobody should sent NYSC kids to officiate elections in CPC taliban strong-holds! If a party other than CPC wins in a pooling unit, how is the NYSC kid going to declare it, with CPC craze-nuts watching? If you are a parent, or if a family member is serving in Kano or Kaduna or Jigawa or any of the places where Buhari's supporters are lynching and roasting their fellow citizens, please fly them home to safety! Buhari can send Bakare and Rotimi Fashakin to officiate elections". 

 

The Independent Electoral Commission, INEC has postponed governorship and state assembly elections in Bauchi and Kaduna States to 28 of this month .

Attahiru Jega, chief of Nigeria's Independent Election Commission, said that polls cannot go ahead as scheduled Tuesday in the states of Kaduna and Bauchi because of security concerns, and that the votes will be delayed there by two days.

The two predominantly Muslim northern states that have been wracked by deadly riots and retaliatory violence since the presidential election was won by Jonathan Goodluck from the country's south-south.

Latest report indicate Ikechukwu ukeoma was Killed in a bauchi police station where he was taking refuge with other youth corpers while serving his country. elombah.com was told that a lady, a medical doctor said that during her Church's Prayer Meeting a few days ago, a member of the Church received a phone call from his brother who is serving in Bauchi and worked with INEC as a polling official during the Presidential Election.

 

That he and six other Corpers were being pursued by an irate mob and they were running to seek refude in a nearby Police Station and that prayer should be rendered for their safety. Sometime later, the brother called the Bauchi Corper again but this time a male voice picked the call and started raining abuses on him. Days later he confirmed that his brother, Ikechukwu and the other six corpers were killed by the mob which over-ran the Police Station!!

 

Continuing he said many Youth Corpers are now being targeted for lynching as they are seen as those who denied Buhari of Electoral victory. In the case of the young man (Ikechukwu Ukeoma) whose death was just described, he said his that on the day of the Presidential Election Ikechukwu prevented some under-age registered "voters" from voting and that attracted the ire of some adult voters in the polling unit. They demanded he hand over the unused ballot papers to them but he refused. He was almost lynched but for the prompt intervention of the Policemen attached to his polling centre who escorted him to the INEC office. He then became a target for attack.

That Youth Corper Was Ikechukwu Ukeoma, he died while faithfully discharging his duty to his fatherland!! 

The NYSC program was established under Decree No.24 of 22nd May 1973. Among its goals according to the decree is to promote ties among Nigerian youths aimed at further enhancing national unity, tolerance and understanding. Upon graduation from higher institutions of learning in Nigeria, the graduates are sent to states in Nigeria to serve a mandatory Youth Service Corps program for one year. Over the years the program was extended to Nigerian students graduating from foreign institutions. 

Recently many Youth Corp members were slaughtered in Jos following the sectarian riots in the city. Many of the Youth Corp members are being killed by hooligans following the recent presidential election as reprisals for the loss of their presidential candidate.

According to Salihu Mustafa, There is no way Buhari would have won the Presidential election, with or without rigging and for the following seven (7) reasons:

1. Buhari has never aligned himself with practising politicians, even those in the north. Rather, he has assembled neophytes and rubble rousers who have no credibility in the eyes of elder politicians. These

 people have been making only speeches that appeal to the talakawas who are mostly the unemployable and un-voting almajiris; with no similar appeal to any other group outside the far north.

2. Buhari has never made use of the intelligentsia, whether from the north or south to give him an objective analysis of what the country needs, so as to get people to have confidence in his leadership.

3. Buhari keeps on hampering on corruption and the like to the bewilderment of the Nigerian elites who are in control of machinery of government and its apparatuses. There is no way this class of people will support his bid to power. Indeed, to get their support, Buhari should have promised an amnesty to all those who have looted the nation's treasury to bring and invest their looted monies in the country within a given period say, three years. Thereafter, he would confiscate all monies not declared.

4. The campaign by Buhari group rather than focussing on issues that would bring unity of all classes, is seen by many as advocating divisiveness and with missionary zeal, with the promise, to save the good from the bad.

5. Buhari is seen not to be in control of the party he founded, judging from his failure to anoint candidates for the Governorship elections in Kano, the most populous state in the north, and indeed, his home base in Katsina.

6. No one knows the other candidates contesting elections under his party in most other parts of the country and who could draw him votes. He seems to rely on one person, Buhari to draw votes for Buhari; compare the situation with President Obama, who got elected as President of US from coalition of voters, especially voters among educated whites and liberal Christians.

7. The odds are too much for him, the people in government in a developing country like Nigeria, would always prefer Business as Usual (BAU) politicians and will try everything to support such candidates and be assured of their lucrative positions rather than candidates who openly preach to change the system against them.

I would add also that Buhari ignored the South-East/South-South Votes to his detriment. The memory of Buhari’s policies as military head of state and as PTF Chairman under the dictator, Gen Sani Abacha, which was seen as detrimental to the interests of this group, especially the Igbo’s, is still fresh in their minds.

Surprisingly, Buhari did nothing to court the SE/SS votes, ask for forgiveness, and bring them into his fold. On the contrary, the only notable Igbo in his camp, Mr Mike Ahamba, SAN, was sacked as chairman of Buhari’s party, the CPC.

To illustrate the entire disdain for the SE/SE, The CPC sent no party agents to the SE and SS to monitor the April 16 Presidential election! 

The PDP apparatus had a field day on April 16.

Finally, Buhari and the CPC had neither the financial muscle nor the political structure to prosecute a presidential election, and yet they spurned Asiwau Bola Tinubu’s offer to help, the went ahead to appoint a political neophyte as his running mate- rejecting Igbo names suggested to him.

1. Since 2003, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, BAT, had always matched PDP naira for naira. He understands clearly that the endemic poverty in the land puts the ordinary Nigerians at the mercy of the politicians that are ready to continue their subjugation with pittance sprinkled their way on election day. They understand that the price of the preponderance of the folks with the electoral power is mere pittance.

The deal Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GEJ must have struck with BAT was for him to lower his guard and allow PDP to do all the spending this time around.

For instance, in lagos last saturday, Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, was so desperate to win (considering the closeness of the contestants to BAT) that in some wards, verifiable votes for the ACN candidates attracted N2,000 each.

This time around, ribadu's candidacy does not mean much to Tinubu personally so he could be sacrificed. Poor Ribadu, he was too naïve to understand BAT's kind of politics. He should have been schooled thoroughly by Atiku on why he abandoned his sojourn in ACN. I don't need to tell you the details otherwise; I shall draw the ire of Bolaji Aluko and some of BAT's ubiquitous acolytes!

What happened today in lagos (where CPC had better showing than CAN) was because only PDP did all the spending.

Do not be deceived, next week shall witness a different outing for ACN in Lagos. The massive injection of money, kudi, ego, owo shall come into play again.

This is the missing link in your analysis.

2. Undoubtedly,  Nigeria would have benefited immensely from Buhari's second coming: If only he had made the correct POLITICAL decisions to accompany his good heart. If only he had correctly read and understood the political mood of the nation: If only he had made the NECESSARY COMPROMISES required in a democratic dispensation: If only he had built up the POLITICAL COALITIONS which is a sine qua non to winning an election, ANY ELECTION!

A coalition that would cut across ALL ethnic, generational, and professional groups: In fact, a coalition that would reflect the diversity of the country.

You cannot win any GENERAL ELECTION IN NIGERIA with the vote of the TALAKAWAS ALONE, not even in the remotest regions of Northern Nigeria!

If only Buhari had done the above, and made the right calls at critical junctures of our political history; In the face of Rampaging Corruption of the PDP, many Nigerians would have WILLINGLY overlooked his obvious faults.

The high DRAMA that have trailed the CPC/ACN alliance talks is the final nail on the coffin of that aspiration!

My hearts was moved when"Buhari wept"! YES, my eyes also misted. I looked at that high Table and saw many Nigerians I admire, also weeping. I had learnt from a close associate of Muhammadu Buhari, that yesterday was not the first time Buhari Cried when discussing the tragic history of Nigeria.

YES, we are all still weeping for our dear country in so many ways.
