Nigeria has marked a 10-year uninterrupted democratic rule for the first time since independence. As a politician, are you delighted by the development recorded so far?

Well, to be candid, I am not. Democracy is the best form of government we can have and we have had it for 10 years. In terms of development, I can’t say there is much to show for it. In these 10 years, one met Nigerian Railways in shambles, for 10 years we have failed to let it go on as we found it. Ten years ago, this ordinary electricity was going well, now it is virtually not existing. We have to pray to get it.

Every responsible nation has its own airlines, we had one but now there is none. During these 10 years, we have failed to have our national airlines. By and large, these major components of development: airlines, railways, power, industries, have been dwindling despite all the promises of declaring emergencies and agenda. Even water is not there. Honestly, I don’t see what we should be proud of in 10 years of democracy. Even that element of people choosing their own leaders, has been bashed by this administration.

Even its adherence to the rule of law?

In 1979, you were defeated in the governorship elections by Balarabe Musa of the People Redemption Party (PRP) in Kaduna State. How did that happen?


Interestingly and funnily enough, in that old Kaduna state, comprising of the present Katsina and Kaduna states, there were 99 seats in the House of Assembly. And in that House of Assembly, the NPN, my party, had 66 seats out of 99, thereby having the two-third majority. And when it got to the governorship elections I lost (laughter).


What happened?


Balarabe Musa was fielded as the PRP’s candidate and I was fielded as the NPN’s. There was a strong competition going on then between Zagezagi and Katsinawa.  The Zaria people, therefore, connived and united to defeat a Katsina man. So Kaduna state, as it is today, gave its votes, irrespective of the party, to PRP.  We noticed this when the results started coming in. For instance, in Kafanchan, which is in southern Zaria, in that local government, even in the House of Assembly and so on, the usual votes was 28,000 votes for NPN and 11, 000 or 12, 000 votes for PRP. In that governorship election, it was the PRP 32, 000 and NPN 11, 000 (laughter). That was what they did to NPN which was very strong in Zaria area. But all the same, the votes we got from Katsina, although there was no any connivance or anything, was very impressive, though they defeated us with about 9,000 votes in the entire state.  

But in the 1983 elections, the votes I got from the state were double of what I got in the 1979 elections because President Shehu Aliyu Shagari went on a campaign. When he came to Zaria, he took my hand during the campaign lectures and told the people that “Alhaji Lawal Kaita is my candidate. He is the candidate of the NPN. Anybody who will not vote for him, I don’t want him to vote at all.” That was how we won the 1983 elections.


Was Governor Balarabe Musa’s impeachment done to avenge your 1979 defeat?


No. There was no any plan of impeachment at all. When we lost the election, the NPN caucus in Kaduna State met. We took a decision that as much as possible, we should cooperate with the PRP. But he refused to cooperate with us. We offered him an olive branch and even President Shagari sent his team to make it possible for us to work together. We did try several times but he refused even to cooperate with us. We thought he will say let’s work together. He did that knowing fully that NPN had 66 members in the House of Assembly. But he refused to come forward. We thought he will offer us three to four commissioners and so on. But he did nothing like that. At the end of it, the caucus met again and decided to impeach him. He committed so many blunders during his 18 months tenure as the governor. So the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Mamman Iro Danmusa went ahead and we mobilised our members. We got the two- third and even got one member from his own PRP (laughter). That was an interesting period of pure politics with no sentiment. They were not doing it for me, it was for NPN.


You were said to have created a parallel government in Kano State when Shagari appointed you as his Presidential Liaison Officer. That was even why Governor Abubakar Rimi declared you  persona non grata in the state. How did that happen?


Well, you know that it was a PRP government under Abubakar Rimi. When I came in there, he refused to see me. Even when I went to him with a minister from Kano, Alhaji Bello Maitama, he refused to see us. He said he could see the minister, but not with me. He was saying that as far as he was concerned, I was an illegal body (laughter). Well, in a way, he never cooperated. Also, the federal government, unlike now, was full of resourceful people.

So when we started the Shagari Mass Housing Scheme, Kano State was given between 700-1000 housing units. In Kano, housing and land are very scarce and precious. I went to the late Malam Aminu Kano and asked him to give me three names to be included in my committee that will handle the 1000 housing project. I brought in three members from the NPN and we picked the chairman from the PRP. He was Alhaji Sani Gwale. He is still alive. I said ok, look at the urban housing, see to their construction and also see to their distribution. And everybody in Kano was entitled to it.

When they got the fertilizer in the rainy season, they deliberately refused to give it to NPN members. I didn’t even contact Shagari. I talked to Malam Adamu Ciroma, who was the Minister of Agriculture.  He said how many tonnes do you want? I said 20,000 - 50,000; and he gave them to me. I was distributing fertilizer to people more than the PRP government in the state was doing (laughter). That was how I became more popular than the government in the state. So, when elections came, Rimi contested and lost.


 You served as Kaduna State governor for three months when the military struck. Where were you when the coup occurred?


I was in the Government House, sleeping. But I was aware that something like that will happen. I was sleeping in the Government House on the 30th December, 1983; that very morning I was going to Kafanchan for the presentation of a staff of office (first class) to the late Emir of Jema’a, Alhaji Isa Muhammadu. It was about six in the morning when my security aide came and started knocking at my door. I was very furious, I opened the window to see what was happening. I hadn’t seen a single car even though we were travelling around seven. So, I answered the door and saw the security man holding a radio. He did not say a word to me; he handed the radio to me. I heard the radio saying, “I, Sani Abacha , bla bla bla, ” That was a clear signal of a coup.                   

Also, on that night, at about 1:30-2:00am; a lady, who was one of our members in the State House of Assembly came to a meeting saying that if we were not careful, either today or the following week the military would topple our government.  We got all the signals for the coup.


Didn’t you realised that you were jeopardising your lives by not taking any action, having got wind of the coup, like Sardauna, others did in 1966?


Shagari was fully aware that there was going to be an attempted coup. But when he called the officers alleged to be planning the coup; they all said that there was nothing like that. They were Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida, Aliyu Gusau, Ibrahim Bako, among others.


Was Shagari convinced that they were not planning any coup?


No. His argument was that if he were to arrest his kinsmen like Babangida, Buhari, Abacha, Gusau and so on, even if he shoots away all of them, the next people that will take over are all foreign to him. He did not know them. This he knew. It will be quite a disaster for him to remove them; and for some other people to take over and come and do the coup. But I believed it was destined to be like that.


As a prince, up till now you don’t have any traditional title. What is happening?


Well, nothing is happening. I always hold the view that I did not want a traditional title much as I respect it. Because it is only meant for you to sit down at the palace and advice, while you have no any authority over anything. And in the last 30 years, I have been having a free life. I have been enjoying free movement without any constraint. I like the way I live, which is very much comfortable. It is unnecessary, therefore, to go and get myself turbaned without any authority. I found it a very big constraint to my belief in life. If I will be made an emir, then I can accept it out rightly. Because I know I have some authority, but to be a title holder, I don’t think it is worthy. Mind you, I have an older brother, Alhaji MD Yusuf, who also doesn’t like it and he never accepted it. He was offered several times to choose, but he refused.


Do you have anything to do with former President Obasanjo now?


I have nothing to do now with Obasanjo. But I still have some small liking for him. I admire him, sometimes, because he cracks jokes. If you are with him, he creates an atmosphere of ease around you. He makes you laugh. This is the only attribute that I know he has. Otherwise, he is very vindictive and unforgiving.

ABOUT 33,000 applicants have beaten Friday’s deadline for the submission of Expression of Interest in the privatisation of companies to be created out of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) spokesman Chukwuma Nwokoh said 174 applications were received from prospective investors/concessionaires interested in acquiring the four thermal stations and the two hydro stations. About 157 expressed interest in acquiring the 11 distribution companies.

The BPE, last December, invited prospective core investors to express interest in the 11 distribution companies unbundled from the PHCN. The BPE also invited prospective core investors to express interest in the four thermal power stations and as concessionaires for the two hydro power stations. The initial deadline for receipt of EOIs was February 18.

But, following representations by prospective investors who attended the five-city Electric Power Investors’ fora to court world class investors to participate in the privatisation of the companies, the Federal Government approved the extension of the deadline till last Friday.

The approval was granted by the Chairman of the National Council on Privatization (NCP), Vice-President Mohammed Namadi Sambo. The fora were held in Lagos (January 18-19, 2011); Dubai (January 24-25); London (January 27-28); New York (February 1-2); and Johannesburg (February 10-11.)

The core investor sales to be carried out through international competitive bidding will cover the 11 electricity distribution companies.

They are: Abuja Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Benin Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Eko Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc; and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company Plc.

Others are: Jos Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Kano Electricity Distribution Company Plc; Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company Plc; and Yola Electricity Distribution Company Plc.

The privatisation of thermal and hydro power stations, which will also be carried out through international competitive bidding, will cover the following companies:

Thermal Power Generating Companies:

•Ughelli Power Plc, which is in Delta State, with an installed capacity of 972 MW;

•Geregu Power Plc in Kogi State, North Central, with a capacity of 414 MW;

•Afam Power Plc, comprising Afam I-V power stations, located in Rivers State in South-South Nigeria with an installed capacity of 776 MW; and

•Sapele Power Plc in Sapele, Delta State, with an installed capacity of 1020 MW.

Hydro Power Generating Companies are:

•Kainji Power Plc, comprising Kainji Power Plants and Jebba Power Plants, in Niger and Kwara states; and

•Shiroro Power Plc at the Shiroro Gorge, Niger State.

Successful bidders will be responsible for operating the distribution companies, making investments to improve the distribution network and customer service - in line with the objectives of the Federal Government set out in the National Electric Power Policy (NEPP).

For the generating companies, potential bidders/concessionaires, who should be existing local and/or international power generators or investors with power generators as long-term technical partners, will be responsible for operating the stations, improving the generation capacity and making investments - in line with the objectives of the Federal Government in the NEPP.

Three aircraft arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja yesterday with 1,243 Nigerians who had been stranded in Tripoli due to the on-going political crisis in Libya.The director-general of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the coordinating agency for the operation, Muhammad Sani-Sidi disclosed this to journalists, while receiving the passengers at the airport.

He said President Goodluck Jonathan had directed that all Nigerians who were distressed and willing to return to Nigeria should be evacuated as soon as possible.




According to the DG, the operation had witnessed the deployment of four chartered planes with the capacity to accommodate 500 passengers each, as well as a commercial aircraft that could accommodate about 200 passengers.

He said that so far the total number of Nigerians that have been evacuated is 2,278.

The agency which initially targeted 2000 Nigerians had discovered that more stranded Nigerians had continued to troop out from remote areas of Libya to the Tripoli Airport, seeking to be evacuated.

Mr Timloh B. Nkem, Director North and Horn of Africa Division, who represented the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Odein Ajumogobia said that about 3000 additional Nigerians have registered with the embassy officials in Libya, indicating their desire to be evacuated.

Most of the returnees who looked exhausted and tired from the stress in Libya, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for initiating the move for their evacuation. Two of them delivered babies at Tripoli Airport, while awaiting the arrival of chartered aircrafts from Nigeria.

Another pregnant woman among the returnees who simply gave her name as Mary said, “if not for the evacuation, I wonder how I could deliver in that hard condition in crowded open camp. I am happy that the government provided food and medications for us on our arrival here in Nigeria.”

NEMA and Civil Defence ambulances with medics were on hand to provide urgent medical service at the airport .

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday threatened to institute legal action regarding media report that he voted four times as Vice President in the April 2007 general elections, if the story was not retracted and an unreserved apology tendered to him by the media organisation.Jonathan’s position followed a statement by Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole dispelling the said report alleging that he told some United States diplomats in December 2008 that President Jonathan voted four times in the said poll.

According to the governor, “It is obvious that there was a clear mix-up in the story as the person in reference was the former military vice-president, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, whose name was tendered in court as having voted four times during the epic case to regain the mandate popularly given to Oshiomhole by the Edo people and not President Goodluck Jonathan”.

Accordingly, the President said it became evident that the media organisation and its publishers were “deliberately waging a malicious campaign of falsehood and calumny aimed at impugning” his integrity.

The said report published yesterday in a national daily newspaper (not LEADERSHIP) had claimed that the paper relied on American diplomatic cables released by the whistleblower site, WikiLeaks for the story that President Jonathan voted several times in the 2007 general elections, an allegation which it said was made by Oshiomole.

“According to Mr. Oshiomole, as reported in the US diplomatic cables, the court ruling voiding the supposed election of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Edo governor and declaring Mr. Oshiomole the legitimate winner would not have been possible without documentary evidence that Mr. Jonathan, among others, personally rigged the election”, the newspaper report stated.

But in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ima Niboro, Jonathan said he had come to the conclusion that the report was a campaign of calumny following the series of defamatory and always false reports published against him “such as the bogus claim that he has engaged over 130 personal aides since assuming office and the totally untrue report that the President’s children were attending school when other Nigerian children were asked to stay at home for the recent voters’ registration exercise.

“How any editor with the least modicum of intelligence and who is not bent on carrying out a nefarious agenda could have given any credence to such a report and go as far as plastering it all over the front-page of his newspaper totally beats our imagination”, he added.

The statement made available to LEADERSHIP last night reads: “It is worthy of note that Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State to whom the allegation was attributed has already denied ever making such a ludicrous claim.In his largeness of heart and magnanimity, President Jonathan ignored all previous attacks on his person and family, but the newspaper has gone too far this time.

“President Jonathan, therefore demands a full retraction of the offensive allegation of electoral malpractice against president Jonathan and an unreserved apology to the president published by the newspaper with the same prominence as today’s false report.

“If this is not done in short order, we will pursue every legal means available to seek redress for the president and the presidency. This nonsense must stop!”

Meanwhile, Oshiomole who contended that there was a mix up in the story where Jonathan was mistaken for former Military Vice President, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, said, “Why we still ponder over the import of the strange linkage to the President, we are particularly moved not to suspect that the newspaper is opening its flanks to the whims of mischief makers or some unscrupulous elements who deliberately wish to drive a wedge between Jonathan and Oshiomhole”.

Oshiomole’s rebuttal of the said report is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media Affairs, Mr. Tony Iyare .

The statement made available to LEADERSHIP on Sunday reads: “We are completely at a loss how the newspaper came to that conclusion which is attributed to the highly controversial whistleblower site, Wikileaks and said to have been made exclusively to it. We wish to say that at no time did the governor ever made such a weighty allegation against President Goodluck Jonathan.

“In addition, what was tendered in court was the electoral register bearing the names of voters in Edo State which had nothing to do with Jonathan who voted in Bayelsa.

“We wish to place on record that there was no where either in the tendered court documents or the brief with the US diplomats where President Jonathan’s name featured as having voted four times. We want to plead that the media should endeavour to verify its facts painstakingly before going to press in order to avoid causing unnecessary disaffection”.

Meanwhile, Jonathan launched an updated campaign website at goodluck.org.ng that calls on all Nigerians to sign up and join the cause of transforming our country and building one Nigeria. The website gives power to ordinary Nigerians, enabling them to create and sign-up for events, spread the word to family and friends, and provide input and ideas on issues like building lasting peace in the Niger Delta, reforming and expanding Nigeria’s power sector, investing in Nigerian education and agriculture, and creating sustainable new industries, jobs and national security.

.Zakari Garba was arrested on Suleja - Kaduna road for allegedly being in possession of explosive devices
A 32-year-old man, Zakariya’u Garba was arrested last Friday by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) with two canisters suspected to be bombs in New Wuse, a village few kilometres away from Suleja, Niger State were two bombs exploded last Thursday. The arrest of the suspect was made barely 24 hours after the Suleja bomb blasts that claimed over 10 lives at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) zonal campaign rally.


The suspect according to investigations was arrested by a team of NDLEA at a place called Sabon Wuse along Abuja-Kaduna express way.

Garba, a Kaduna-based trader was arrested for allegedly being in possession of two explosive device and tiger branded dry cell batteries by officers of NDLEA at New Wuse, in Tafa Local Government Area at about11:30 am.

It would be recalled that a manhunt for persons responsible for the twin blasts at the PDP rally last Thursday had led to arrest of some persons.

Garba was apprehended at a post mounted by officers of NDLEA when he was searched for hard drugs but instead of drugs two metallic objects believed to be bombs were seen on him.

The Commander of the NDLEA, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdul confirming the arrest said that his men at the old toll gate in New Wuse stopped a Kaduna-bound bus conveying the suspect and 17 passengers and found the two canisters of explosives among the luggage of the suspect.

Intimating journalists on why the commercial bus was stopped, Abdul said his men were hunting for cannabis, but were shocked when they found that the suspect had two canisters of explosive devices wrapped with a cream lace material and concealed in a black polythene bag.

Having craftily concealed the contents in an attempt to beat the plying eyes of security operatives, the suspect was agitated when asked to reveal the contents of what he was carrying, a situation NDLEA boss said prompted his men to investigate further.

“Luck however ran out on the suspect when he was asked to disclose the contents of the nylon bag he carried. He refused and at the insistence of my men he opened the nylon bag, only for them to find the explosives and dry cell batteries in the bag,” he said.

As soon as the Suleja area command of the agency informed the state headquarters, the state commander said he directed that the suspect and all the passengers on the bus, which include five women (three nursing mothers), seven infants and five male adults, be brought to the state headquarters for proper investigations.

He said the suspect was screened adding that on his hand-held phone messages that suggest security breaches were unravelled and are being kept for further investigations.

The contents of the messages on his cellular phone would not be released as authorities said that would jeopardise investigations.

Garba while refusing to talk on the matter for inability to speak English language explained in Hausa that he had no knowledge of the explosives adding that he had nothing to do with them.

In his own account, the driver of the bus, Malam Shafiu Sani said that he picked the suspect from Madalla, a town in Suleja Local Government Area, along Kaduna-Abuja road.

Sani told newsmen that the suspect came onto the bus with a bag. Aside the driver of the vehicle, other passengers including the conductor also testified that the suspect brought a bag onto the vehicle.

.PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday in Abuja pledged equitable distribution of developmental projects to all parts of the country if his mandate to lead the nation is renewed in next month’s presidential elections.

The President, who spoke when he granted audience to the League of Imams and Alfas of the old Western Region, reiterated his total commitment to running an all-inclusive government that would not discriminate against any individual or section of the country.

President-General of the League, Sheikh Mustapha Ajisafe, led the Islamic leaders, who are from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Edo and Delta States.

According to the President, “we will collate the priority interests of all geo-political zones in the country and factor them into a five-year development plan, which will be adequately funded to ensure effective implementation.”

He said that with success in the April polls, his administration would continue to work with all interest groups in the country to achieve rapid economic development and create new jobs for Nigeria’s youthful population.

“We will work harder to develop national infrastructure, boost power supply, diversify the economy, boost mechanised agriculture, improve rail transportation and other forms of transportation.

Sheikh Ajisafe had assured President Jonathan of the support of the Muslim Ummah in the Old Western Region for his “noble vision for Nigeria.”

“As commanded by the Holy Quran, we must pray for our leaders in their governance of the state. We pray that Almighty Allah will continue to give you strength and the wisdom to pilot the affairs of the nation. We commend your reaching out to all Nigerians irrespective of religious or ethnic differences. Allah will strengthen you further, especially in this critical stage of our history, Ajisafe said.”

Presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhammadu Buhari appears to be losing grip of the political elite of the North West, most of whom are said to be confused as to what the man stands for.

Investigations by Sunday Tribune confirmed at the weekend that there is a lot of ambiguity surrounding the candidature of Buhari among leaders of the North West.

Sources revealed that recent meetings among some political leaders of the zone, especially those in the vanguard of the actualisation of zoning in April, indicated a lack of clarity as to what Buhari stands for in the run-up to the next general election.

Sources confirmed that the leaders of the zone are wary of the usual character sketch of Buhari, which has been flaunted over the years, adding that the zone expects the CPC candidate to directly communicate with the leaders and that Buhari has not been forthcoming.

So far, leaders of the Arewa Consultative Forum(ACF), the Unity Forum(UF) and the youth groups, who wanted to sound Buhari out on his plans for the general election have been shunned by the General.

A source said that a recent meeting between leaders of the CPC and the UF pleaded with Buhari to consider meeting the political leaders of the North West to afford them the opportunity of x-raying his programmes.

It was gathered that so far, Buhari’s men are relying on religion as the main campaign weapon to prosecute the election in parts of the North.

“Some religious leaders were being recruited to continually highlight religious differences as an issue in the coming election and most of them singing the Buhari song,” a source said at the weekend.

Beside Buhari’s failure to meet with key stakeholders in the region, he has also distanced himself from the agitations of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) headed by Alhaji Adamu Ciroma.

The NPLF led a stiff battle against President Goodluck Jonathan before the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in January.

It was gathered that while Jonathan has met with leaders of the North including Ciroma and has stated clearly that he would not run for office in 2015, Buhari is relying on the street campaign and sentiments to win.

A source said that the Neighbour to Neighbour campaign of the Jonathan Organization and the resolve of the northern leaders to name him “Mainasara,” which translates to the winner, are also paying off positively for Jonathan.

It was also gathered that key supporters of Buhari in the zone including Senator Adamu Aliero, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu and Dr. Sauyyadi Abba Ruma are recruiting the crowd heavily to pass a message of popularity whenever Buhari campaigns anywhere in the North.

But Buhari’s association with the likes of Aliero and Ruma is also said to be courting him some displeasure among the discerning public, especially in view of the roles played by many of them during the prolonged illness of the late president Umaru Yar’Adua.

“Quite unlike what many people outside the North are being told, the Buhari popularity is more on paper for now. The determinants of elections vary from state to state and he is not earning the confidence of the leaders,” a top political leader in the north said, adding that so far Buhari remains a dreaded politician because he doesn’t give much away.

It was learnt that the coming election would be influenced by region and religion, those working for Jonathan in Kaduna and states of the North West are unrelenting. They have continued to traverse the nooks and crannies of the state to sell and project his candidature. They are also meeting with Islamic clerics to convince them on the need to vote for Jonathan and the incumbent state governor, Patrick Yakowa, who they claimed, were good friends of the Muslims and have a lot in stock for them once they emerge successful in the elections.

Another source said that Buhari’s claim to probity is becoming suspect in view of his romance with some of those who are being investigated for corruption, such persons have now used their money to hijack the CPC machinery, a source said.

The CPC governorship candidate in Katsina State, Senator Yakubu Lado Danmarke has been arrested by the police.

Danmarke was apprehended early Saturday at about 3.00am at Liyafa Hotel situated along the ring road linking Katsina-Mani road in the state capital.

Investigation by Sunday Tribune revealed that, the Senator is being detained at the State Police Headquarters along Daura road.

The state Police Command PPRO, ASP Abubakar Ibrahim, when contacted confirmed the arrest of the serving senator, saying that the arrest was based on a petition received by the command.

However, it was gathered that the arrest may not be unconnected with the recent clash between the state governor’s convoy and that of the CPC governorship candidate at Makaurachi village in Batagarawa Local government area of the state last week.

In a related development, the CPC supporters in the state have taken to the streets to protest the arrest of their governorship candidate, Senator Yakubu Lado.

The protesters, who are mainly youths and motorcyclists were heard saying, “Bamu yar’da ba, sai an saki Lado” meaning “we will not agree, release Lado now.”

Even though there was no casualty during the protest, the Police in Katsina have beefed up security in the state capital to wade-off any breach of the law.

When our correspondent went round the metropolis, police patrol teams were seen moving round the town to ensure that everyone was allowed to go about their normal activities.

The Federal Government is to construct 36,000 housing units in all the state capitals in the country for teachers, just as the Niger State government has completed arrangement for the release of car loans for teachers.

Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, who performed the foundation laying ceremony of the first 500 units of the houses to be constructed in Minna, said Suleja, Bida, Kontagora and New Bussa were other towns that would benefit from the programme.

Speaking at the ceremony, he said the state government had already paid unspecified amount to land owners to ensure the project did not run into any hitch.

To make the new housing estate habitable, the governor said government would construct a 40-bed hospital in the area, in addition to the provision of potable water and access road, a standard primary school, and games area, while a senior secondary school would be constructed through Public Private Partnership policy.

“All these projects will start even before the houses are completed,” Governor Aliyu disclosed.

He said the government had completed arrangements with some commercial banks in the state for the release of car loans to teachers, adding that the programme could commence next month.

Aliyu admonished teachers to remain more committed to their professional duties as it was only through their dedication to duty that the standard of education would improve.

Minister of State for Education, Mr Kennet Gbagi, said the Federal Government introduced the scheme to mobilise teachers adequately so that they would not be distracted from their duties.

The housing scheme, Gbagi said, through the Deputy Director, School Support in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Nwachukwu Rose, “will allay most of the serious challenges facing teachers in their assignment and attract best brains to the profession.”

Niger State Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr Peter Salle Sarki, said 80 hectares of land had been acquired for the project and emphasised the commitment of the state government to the development of education as a major tool for the transformation of the state.
