PoliticsDefend Our Democracy In 2019 :wike Tells Labour Leaders by kcmichael(op): 9:30pm On May 01, 2018
National Insecurity: Labour has failed Nigerians by failing to act —Governor Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that labour has failed Nigerians by refusing to act in the face of unbridled killings of defenceless Nigerians across the country .

The governor said it is not in national interest for labour to be only concerned about salary increment when their kith and kin are mauled to the death on a daily basis.

In an address during the 2018 Workers Day in Port Harcourt, Governor Wike said: “Labour is only after the increment of wages and emoluments without showing concern for the mass killings going on across different states of the Federation.

“Labour is quiet in the face of deaths. Of what benefit will increment of salaries be when all your children, friends and relatives are killed in the course of this national insecurity? It is incumbent on labour to rise up in defence of Nigerians by demanding for immediate cessation of killings “.

Governor Wike said that Labour has a duty to work towards the progress of Nigeria as they battle for their welfare. He said that labour must rekindle their pre-2015 posture when they participated in occupy Nigeria during the Jonathan era.

The governor urged labour to defend the nation’s democracy which is under threat by the failure of the APC Federal Government to respect the rule of law and democratic tenets.

“Be vigilant and defend our democracy in 2019. That is what labour is known for. Labour thrives under democracy. Without democracy, labour will run into challenges “, he said.

He said that the state is investing in building a strong economy that will enable workers earn decent wages, empower entrepreneurs to create jobs and provide improved livelihood opportunities for Rivers people.

He said: “We have approved an interest-free revolving loan scheme for civil servants. The annual sum earmarked for this programme is N1, 200,000,000.00 (one billion two hundred naira) only, with a monthly disbursement of N100, 000,000.00 (one hundred million naira only.

“We have also approved another interest-free loan for owners of small businesses to access to enhance their businesses, create jobs and grow the economy. An annual sum of N2, 400,000,000.00 (two billion four hundred million) only, has been set-aside for this purpose with a monthly disbursement of N200, 000,000.00 (two hundred million naira) only”

The governor said that his administration is already working to fix some of the subsisting challenges, including the contributory pension scheme, the contributory health insurance scheme and the payment of gratuities to retired civil servants.

He announced that the State Government will construct State Secretariats for the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress. He also announced a donation of N100million to the different labour unions.

In her address, Rivers State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mrs Beatrice Otubo commended the Rivers State Governor for his regular payment of salaries and pensions.

She urged the governor to take steps to resolve the challenges surrounding the contributory pension scheme and gratuity to retired civil servants. The Labour Leader also commended Governor Wike for his outstanding developmental strides.

Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in Rivers State, Mr Austin Jonah lauded the Rivers State Governor for his numerous infrastructural and development projects across the state.

The Workers Day was marked by parade by all the affiliate trade unions in the state, with Governor Wike taking the official salute.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that Rivers people will not allow any form of political robbery in 2019.

Speaking during the Grand Reception for Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa by the Anioma Nation on Saturday in Asaba, Governor Wike said that Rivers people will be very vigilant during the 2019 General Election.

He said the criminal actions of the APC and their accomplices will not work in Rivers State because the APC Federal Government has done no projects for the people.

The governor said that his political disposition changed when he realised that the leaders of the APC lack maturity and fairness.

He said: “I use to be a gentleman. But when I saw these mad people, I said let me keep my gentleness aside.

“These political armed robbers cannot succeed in Rivers State. We are prepared for credible elections and we shall remain vigilant “.

Governor Wike thanked the Anioma Nation for their overwhelming endorsement of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for re-election. He said that the Delta State Governor has no opposition because of his outstanding performance.

“Okowa should be preparing for the next swearing in ceremony. I have not seen any other political party in Delta State. There is no other political party to contest against Ifeanyi Okowa “, he said.

In his remarks, Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa said that his election sent a message that Rivers State is united.

He said that the rest of Delta State considered equity and competence, instead of population in their consideration of his emergence.

Okowa said that his endorsement by the Anioma Nation and all other ethnic nationalities at the event signals the continuation of the good works of his administration. He said that he will never disappoint the people of Delta State.

Deputy Senate President, Dr Ike Ekweremadu said that the emergence of Governor Okowa is a product of equity for the Anioma Nation.

He said Nigeria will continue to have problems unless there is justice across the country. Ekweremadu thanked the people of Delta State for bringing to Nigerians the essence of justice.

National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus said that Governor Okowa has performed creditably over the last three years.

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori said his people will support the re-election of Governor Okowa because of his performance and equity

PoliticsPrevail On National Assembly To Override Buhari On Electoral Act – Wike by kcmichael(op): 6:32am On Apr 13, 2018
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has called on Nigerians to prevail on the National Assembly to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto of the 2010 Electoral Act Amendment Bill to guarantee free, fair and credible electoral system in the country.

Addressing the 2018 Annual Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Section on Legal Practice Conference in Port Harcourt on Thursday , Governor Wike urged Nigerian legal practitioners to rise up and insist on the relevance of the amended Electoral Act 2010.

He said: “We must all stand up against the devilish efforts by some anti-democratic forces to kill the ongoing process to amend the 2010 Electoral Act on the whimsical excuse that the order of elections proposed in the Amendment Bill contravenes the discretionary powers of INEC, which, in any case, has not complained of any mischief occasioned by the new order.

“Let me remind us that a defining feature of the legal profession is the commitment to promote both the substantive rules and the processes of the law, as well as, to defend the democratic values of our society.”

Governor Wike said though the 2010 Electoral Act was enacted to promote credible elections, the All Progressive Congress (APC) working with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Police manipulated the Act to rig the rerun elections in Rivers State.

He said in view of the fraudulent activities of INEC, APC and the Police , the Tribunal and the Court of Appeal upheld results concocted by the Police for the Rivers Rerun Elections

He said: “We all saw how results sheets were duplicated with identical serial numbers and handed over to the police to entre fake results and returns in favour of the candidates of the APC in the said elections.

“In spite of this law, we all saw how both the tribunal and the Court of Appeal anchored their verdicts on results that were generated and certified from the custody of the Nigerian Police, while the results from INEC, which conducted the elections, were branded irrelevant and accordingly rejected.

“What all these mean is that a thousand Electoral Laws may amount to nothing for as long as the Federal Government, the INEC, the Police and other government agencies that may legally or illegally be brought into the election process, continue to disrespect the law and trample on our democratic rights to free and fair elections with impunity and without suffering any legal pains or punishment for their criminal conduct.”

Governor Wike urged the legal profession to constantly reinvent and reposition itself in response to existing and new challenges both in the theory and practice of the law.

The governor also said lawyers must also rethink the way they practice to remain relevant in the profession and meet the needs of their clients and society in the most professional, diligent and efficient manner.

Declaring the conference open, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onoghen represented by Justice AB Gumel said the timing of the conference is right as it will allow the bench and bar the opportunity to appraise emerging issues of justice delivery.

He urged judges to adhere to the tenets of the law in their delivery of judgments.

President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) said the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Law Practice is a vehicle for deepening professional practice in the bar.

Chairman of NBA Section on Legal Practice, Mainnaya Essien (SAN) said recent ethical issues require an appraisal of practice and challenges.

Highpoint of the conference was the presentation of a recognition plaque to Governor Wike by the NBA President for the outstanding contributions of the Rivers State Governor to the legal profession.

PoliticsUS To Wike: Stop Election Violence, Get Investments by kcmichael(op): 11:32pm On Apr 12, 2018
• Belemaoil appeals for US business liaison office in Port Harcourt
The United States Government has called on the government and people of Rivers State to jettison election violence in the 2019 elections and in return get more investments from America and other foreign nations.

The call came as the Founder/President of Belemaoil Producing Limited, Mr. Jack-Rich Tein Jnr, urged the United State Department of Commerce to site its Business Liaison Office in Port Harcourt to attract more investments to the state and also advance mutually beneficial interests.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to Belemaoil Producing Limited at its corporate headquarters in Port Harcourt yesterday, the United States Consul General in Nigeria, Mr. F. John Bray, noted that Nigeria was going into a serious political period and urged the people of Rivers State to use the opportunity to change the general perception about the state.

His words: “We are going into a very serious political period in Nigeria. One of the most terrible reputation for electoral violence is right here in Port Harcourt. When I was speaking with Governor (Nyesom) Wike last night, I said if you want investors to come, let’s have free, fair, transparent, non-violent elections in Port Harcourt. Let the world see that. Yes security is important.”

Bray also urged Nigeria to start planning and develop programmes that would develop the youth and create employment opportunities to take care of the country’s rising population.
He noted that academics estimate that more than 77 per cent of Nigerians are under the age of 34, adding that projections that the country would be the third largest in the world by 2050, create a scenario that Nigeria would have a “youth problem” if nothing is done.

“Another thing that is important when we look at statistics about Nigeria as a country is that according to US projections, by the year 2050, Nigeria will be the third most populated country in the world.
“And we are looking at something that requires an emergency handling: the youth problem. What we spoke about at the University of Port Harcourt this morning is how we can turn that problem into an advantage. This is going to come through education, training and employment opportunities so that the families can take of themselves and their children and their communities,” he said.

The Consul General commended Belemaoil for the giant strides it has made within one year of operations especially in its host communities and urged other businesses to emulate the investment in human resources especially as it affects the host communities to achieve better peace and security in the Niger Delta.
In his remarks, the Founder/President of Belemaoil Producing Limited, Mr. Jack-Rich Tein Jnr, called on the United States Department of Commerce to establish a Business Liaison Office in Port-Harcourt to foster strategic economic growth.

“The establishment of such an office will effectively coordinate the activities of the US Department of Commerce within the Niger Delta as well as promote investment opportunities in the region,” Tein said.
He noted that Port-Harcourt is West Africa’s economic hub for oil and gas investment which contributes over 85 per cent of Nigeria’s economy, adding that: “The city is also the heart of the Niger Delta, which is Nigeria’s treasure base. Therefore, such US Commercial presence will greatly foster economic and diplomatic cohesion.”

Tein said the collaboration with the US Department would strengthen existing relationship with the United State and create more value for mutual benefits through collaboration in areas such as trainings and workshops, technical partnerships, procurement of equipment, materials and spare parts, acquisition of state-of-the-art technology to support home economy, and other bilateral relationships with Rivers State and the federal government.

On the achievements of the company within one year of operation, Tein said the Belemaoil has over 3,000 direct employments to youths, over 400 local/overseas scholarships and achieved 100 per cent eradication of incidences Sabotage/Vandalism of pipeline within the OML 55 operational area.
He said the model has brought “restoration of confidence, cooperation and partnership with host communities which guarantees economic activities, create jobs, empower our host communities and thereby occasioning peace and stability within the Niger Delta.”

Under the company’s Graduate Trainee Scheme, over 100 graduates were currently on training in different technical and engineering fields, adding that under its medium term plan, direct benefits to communities would include 36,000 employment generation for monitoring patrol guards as well as skilled and unskilled jobs.
Critical benefits of Belemaoil’s operations to the Federal Government, Tein said, include peace and order with increased regional youth employment; investment-friendly climate for other injectors/investors based on investment friendly environment maintained by Host Communities and increase in crude oil production and revenue.

PoliticsBreaking News. Saraki Appoints Sacked Senator As Aide by kcmichael(op): 11:39am On Apr 09, 2018
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has approved the appointment of Abubakar Danladi as his Special Adviser on Special Duties.

The appointment was announced through a statement by the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the Senate President, Yusuph Olaniyonu, on Sunday.

The appointment takes immediate effect, the statement noted.

Mr Danladi was in 2017 sacked by the Supreme Court as senator representing Taraba North.

In a unanimous judgement, the court nullified Mr. Danladi’s election and declared his challenger, Shuaibu Lau, the winner of the 2014 primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Taraba North Senatorial District.

The court also asked Mr Lau to return all the salaries and allowances he received as senator. There is no evidence he ever did that.

The 53-year-old also served as deputy governor before his election into the Senate in 2015.

PoliticsAPC Is Back As One United Family, Says Oyegun by kcmichael(op): 4:56pm On Apr 05, 2018
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Oyegun, says the ruling party is back in business as one united family.

Mr Oyegun said this while addressing reporters on Wednesday in Abuja, after meeting with five governors from the ruling party.

Ahead of the 2019 elections, he said the APC has resolved the issues threatening the unity of its members in the country.

“We are back in business as one united and happy family,” Oyegun said. “I want to say to you with absolute satisfaction, absolute pride that all the issues that you have been commenting about in the last two days, have been completely and totally resolved.”

The governors are part of the technical committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to look into the issue of tenure extension for the APC National Chairman and other members.

They, however, supported the President who had rejected the extension of tenure for the party’s officials and are expected to submit the report of their findings by Thursday.

The governors are Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Rochas Okorocha of Imo, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a swipe at the ruling party over the tenure extension among other issues affecting the party.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP accused the APC of passing through death throes and pre-election trauma.

It also claimed that the alleged confusion, backstabbing and vicious scheming in the ruling party had proven that the APC has become politically decapitated.

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and former Senator who Represented Rivers State at the National Assembly Senator Wilson Asinobi Ake said the only man who has what it takes to win Rivers State for APC is Senator Magnus Abe.

Speaking yesterday in Portharcourt the Rivers State Capital during the Extra Ordinary Meeting of the Stakeholders of the Party, Senator Ake said Magnus Abe is the only Person God has positioned to be the Next Governor of Rivers State.

“It’s obvious, very obvious, that the only person, the only person in this race that God has positioned so that he alone can take glory for it is Senator Magnus Abe”.

“Ask me, if another person is delivered on the other side, who will take the glory? It’s man of course. It’s either that they are very brilliant, they are very smart in delivering themselves, and everybody will praise them for being very smart”.

“If “you lead I follow” delivers, it’s he leads I follow that will take the praise. Is it not so? If High Tension delivers himself, who will take the praise? It’s High Tension of course”.

“The only person who will survive and win, and every person in Rivers State will say “if not for God” is Magnus Abe”.

“So when you see where God is working, you know. You will feel it. They said the journey would end by August last year, the journey has exceeded and we are now in April 2018. Magnus Abe is not only being heard of in every corner of Rivers State, but Magnus is now being heard nationally and we are still counting”.He Concluded
