The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to immediately test its popularity among Nigerians by conducting free, fair and credible local council elections in states under its control. The party said this on Sunday in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan. “We all know that the APC is mortally afraid of going into any election, particularly at the grassroots, as Nigerians across board are bitter with them for their deceit and the wrecking of our once robust economy,” the statement said. “Nigerians are also at pains over the poor welfare direction of the ruling party which has resulted in the penetrating hardship now being suffered under the APC controlled Federal Government misrule. The APC is petrified because Nigerians have renewed their interest in the PDP as the only genuine people-oriented party.” PDP believes its victory in the Osun senatorial bye-election, as well as the recent local council polls in Ekiti and Delta states, have demonstrated the “new thinking among Nigerians” with the party. They said the ruling party cannot go back to the same electorate after purportedly failing to fulfil its promises of jobs creation, monthly stipends, free meals, free houses, and the reduction of fuel price among others. They also condemned the sack of more than 21,000 teachers who failed to meet the cut-off mark set by the Kaduna State government following a controversial competency test. “The APC knows it cannot face the more than eight million Nigerians it has rendered jobless with its reckless policies. They know that judgment awaits them from thousands of workers who were unjustly sacked in the states where APC governors rule, particularly Kogi and Kaduna. “The APC cannot also return to the states where countless helpless families’ breadwinners painfully paid the supreme price due to untold hardship under their misrule,” the statement said. The PDP alleged that some APC governors are seeking the help of President Muhammadu Buhari to win elections in their state, saying they had forgotten that the opposition is ready to reclaim power in 2019. According to them, Nigerians can now differentiate between a deceitful party as wells as a democratic and development-driven party. Highlighting some of its achievement in its 16 years in power, the PDP said it led Nigeria to an economic boom, cleared huge foreign debts, repositioned the banking sector, and championed the telecoms revolution. Other successes the party claimed it recorded include revamping the railways, building new universities, reforming the ports, facilitating unprecedented growth in small and medium enterprises, and placing the nation as a major global investment destination. “The landslide victories of the PDP in the recent elections are, therefore, incontrovertible response by the people not only to the achievements of our government in the states but also to the ideological disposition of the PDP as one genuine democratic platform where all Nigerians are free to socially express, politically aspire and economically flourish,” the statement added.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday issued certificates of registration to Mrs. Sarah Jubril- led political party, Justice Must Prevail Party (JMPP) alongside 20 other newly cleared political parties. Jubril was a special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Ethics and Moral. INEC had previously issued the certificate of registration to the Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) following a Federal High Court’s order. This, therefore brings to 22 the number of newly registered parties in the country. Consequently, the number of existing political parties has risen from 46 to 68 with the likelihood of more parties getting the nod before the 2019 general elections. Already, 25 of the 90 fresh applicants have moved to the next stage after scaling the first huddle. Addressing the leadership of the newly registered parties at the certificate presentation ceremony held at the INEC headquarters, the Commission’s Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said though the increase in number of political parties is good, it has also increased the task before the electoral body. He, however, assured the gathering that INEC is capable to meet the challenges of grappling with 105,944 candidates as a result of increase in the numbers of political parties that would be participating in the 2019 general elections. He said: “The number of political parties is good for our plural democracy. However, political parties must cooperate with the Commission for successful elections. If each of the 68 political parties in Nigeria today fields candidates for all the 1,558 constituencies to be contested in the 2019 general elections, the Commission will grapple with 105,944 candidates. If you consider the management and logistics of providing ballot papers for a projected 80 million registered voters, ad hoc staff and the requirements for forward and reverse logistics, monitoring of political party primaries, electioneering campaign, campaign finance, voter education, accreditation of national/international observers and the media, the task is enormous. I wish to assure Nigerians that we are aware of the challenges. We are also up to the task.”

The senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has declared that having ambition based on a track record of service and sacrifice, is not treason in the All Progressives Congress (APC). Abe, who made the call while speaking at a reception organized in his honour by his friends and associates at Obuama Community in Degema Local Government Area of the State, insisted that nobody will be hanged for having ambition in the party. He said, “Ambition is not treason. Ambition that is based on a track record of service, of sacrifice, of dedication to the course of Rivers State cannot be treason in APC, and nobody will be hanged for it.” The senator called on the people of Kalabari Kingdom to work for the common good of the state, as Nigerians prepare for the 2019 general elections and advised them not to allow themselves to be deceived by any individual. He stated that for the people to travel far and achieve success in any venture; they must travel together and forge a common front, stressing that embarking on a journey without the help of others may be counterproductive. The senator said, “My message here is a very small message for my Kalabari brothers and sisters. What I have to say to you is this, be ye not deceived. Let us not allow anybody to deceive us. There is a saying that if you want to travel fast, travel alone but if you want to travel far, travel together. “To my brothers and sisters in Kalabari-land, I say to you clearly and unambiguously, we have to travel together so we can travel far. If anybody deceive us to travel fast and travel alone, we may travel very fast but we will not travel far. To travel far we have to travel together.” Abe, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on FERMA, urged the people of Kalabari to be interested in the future of Rivers State by ensuring that their opinions are heard on issues that affects the well-being of the state. He said, “I have said that I and every other reasonable man, woman and even children should be interested in the future of Rivers State. It is our heritage, it is our home, it is our inheritance, it is where our bones shall be interred, this is where they will bury us when we die. It is our own place.” “Therefore when it comes to discussing the issues of Rivers State all of us must have a voice, all of us must have an opinion and nobody no matter how powerful, no matter how wealthy and is so big that it is only his or her own voice that will count. And no Rivers man is so insignificant that your own voice and your own opinion will not matter in that discussion about Rivers State.” Earlier, Senator Magnus Abe paid a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Obu-Ama, HRH Odibo Tom Big-Harry.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the State Government will amend the State Anti-kidnapping Law to prescribe death sentence for criminals involved in cultism, robbery and kidnapping. In a state broadcast on Monday on the killing of Johnson Igwedibia alias Don Wanny, Governor Wike stated that the Rivers State Government has zero tolerance for crime and criminality, hence it will continue to take measures to protect lives and property. He said: “We reiterate our zero tolerance for all forms of criminality and reassure all residents of our determination to be tough with those who choose to violate our criminal laws and undermine peace and security in the State. ” To underscore the seriousness we attach to the fight against violent crime, we shall be amending the Anti kidnapping law to prescribe the maximum sentence for engaging in cultism, robbery and kidnapping”. Governor Wike stated that the amnesty programme of the state government which generated peace and was largely successful before it was compromised by the immediate past Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who prevailed on the Federal Government and the security agencies to sabotage it. He emphasised that APC leaders in Rivers State worked against the Amnesty Programme. He said: “Our decision to offer amnesty to all repentant cultists, militants and criminals was done in good faith and in the best interest of the State. Regrettably, while the programme was on course, some opposition leaders in our state, especially the former governor, unhappy with the successes recorded, dissuaded some armed militants and cultists from sincerely embracing the amnesty. “Indeed, they also persuaded the Federal Government not to support the programme and other security measures we had recommended. This is the reason why we must thank the President for doing things differently and with the support of all, a different result has been achieved. “Even now, instead of showing respect for the dead and genuine sympathies to the bereaved families of this dastardly act, the former Governor prefers to further exploit the unfortunate incident for political ends by making wild, unguarded and inciting statements against the State Government. However, we leave him to the judgment of God and posterity.” Governor Wike said contrary to Amaechi’s false claims and posturing, the security challenge in Omoku predated the current administration. He said Rivers State was never peaceful when Amaechi held sway as Governor, noting that the same Don Wanny tragically killed 32 persons in Omoku on the 14th of December 2014 under Amaechi , who failed to bring Don Wanny to justice. Governor Wike said: “For years the security situation in Omoku in particular, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government area in general, has been most challenging because of the criminal activities of Don Wanny and his gang. ” We therefore wholeheartedly thank President Muhammadu Buhari for rising to the occasion and not politicking with the issue of security. We also commend the security agencies, particularly, the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Security, for swiftly rising to the challenge in the most professional manner. “There is no doubt that this heroic success has proven what is possible when our security agencies are willing to discharge their constitutional duties with unadulterated commitment and professionalism.” The governor stated that the position of the state government on the amnesty offer was clear as those who genuinely embraced the offer are bound to fully, completely and perpetually renounce all forms of criminality to enjoy terms of the amnesty or face the full weight of the law when they deviated from the programme. He said: “Consequently, based on reliable information by the security agencies, I hereby direct them to immediately arrest and prosecute the under-mentioned persons who have either reneged on the terms of the amnesty and or refused to embrace same by continuing with cultism, kidnapping, and armed robbery in the State.” The governor listed 32 cultists from 12 local government areas to be arrested and prosecuted by the security agencies. While reassuring the security agencies of the support of the Rivers State Government as they discharge their responsibility of maintaining law and order. “The Rivers State Government will pay N20 million to any person who volunteers useful information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of any of the afore-mentioned persons. “Since 2015, we have been calling for tackling security issues devoid of political considerations in Rivers State in order to achieve maximum result. This level of commitment and professionalism as demonstrated in the Omoku case is exemplary. Therefore, we will continue to demand no less from our security agencies to keep our State safe and secure for residents, visitors and investors. ” As a government, we have invested heavily on the security of the State and will continue to do everything within our powers to guarantee the security and safety of lives and property throughout the State. As a fact, we will spare no cost in ensuring that nobody will have peace if the lives and property of our people make no meaning to them”, the governor said. While recalling his visit to the families of the victims of the ugly Omoku Violence on January 1, 2018 where he pledged a N200million bounty for information on the perpetrators , Governor Wike said the death of Don Wanny and his murderous gang is a welcome development. He said: “Although we would have wanted Mr. Don Wanny and his gang members to have been arrested alive and put to trial for their numerous crimes and atrocities against his own people. His death, nevertheless, is a huge relief to the entire State, and therefore, most welcome development.”
