The Supreme Court refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre to declare cow as a national animal on Monday. A bench of Justices S K Kaul and Abhay S Oka questioned the petitioner what fundamental right was being affected by the issue.

"Is this the job of the court? Why do you file such petitions where we are compelled to impose costs? Which fundamental right is violated? Should we throw law to the winds because you come to court," PTI quoted the bench as saying.

The counsel for the petitioner submitted before the court that cow protection is very important.

The bench warned the lawyer that it would impose costs after which he withdrew the plea and the matter was dismissed as withdrawn.

The top court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Govansh Sewa Sadan and others seeking a direction to the Centre to declare cow as a national animal.

The national director of publicity and advocacy of the Northern Elders Forum, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has stated that Nigeria's next leader must deviate from President Muhammadu Buhari's style of governance if the country must survive. Dr Baba-Ahmed made the comment in an interview with the Punch newspaper published on Sunday, October 9.

His words were:

“If we don’t get it right in 2023, I am afraid that we cannot just hope that in another four or eight years we will be lucky enough to survive this decline in every index of national life.

Boko Haram: Report claims Governor Shettima killed Gubio,

Following the revelation by an Australian Negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davies, names of other alleged Boko Haram sponsors have emerged.

The latest said is the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima.

A magazine, “power Steering” which is being circulated, alleged that Governor Shettima is behind the killing of late Alhaji Awana Ngala, former ANPP chairman in Borno State, who was tipped to succeed former governor Ali Modu Sheriff as well as Engr. Modu Fannami Gubio, the gubernatorial candidate of the ANPP, who was killed barely one week after he was appointed to succeed Modu Sheriff in the 2011 general election.

DailyPost reports that this is coming even as Ahmad Salkida, the self-exiled Nigerian journalist, widely reported to have an unfettered access to Boko Haram, described as questionable, claims by Australian negotiator, Dr. Steven Davis, of having links with the insurgent group.


The Borno State-born journalist, who reportedly fled to the United Arab Emirates over allegations that he was a Boko Haram sympathiser, stated that Davis should explain to Nigerians how he “came across” a member of the insurgent group who told him about the former Borno Governor and the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika.

The magazine, which claimed a secret conversation with a detained Boko Haram member, Mustapha Kolo revealed that there is an existing relationship between the group and the Borno State governor right from his time as a commissioner, where he served in five ministries before his election as Governor of Borno State.

Mustapha Kolo revealed that the governor had been giving them money to further their course and had been meeting with their leaders over targeted assassinations of prominent Borno citizens and politicians, who did not share his own political ideas.

Mustapha Kolo said, “When he (Shettima) was Commissioner, he used to give us plenty money. He even gave us money to kill Fannami Gubio, so he can become governor, but he did not complete his payment; we were following him, he didn’t give us again”

Young schoolgirls who discarded their hijabs in Iran in solidarity with the late Masha Amini have screamed at their headmaster after he demanded they put the headwear back on. In footage released on social media, dozens of schoolchildren shout “Bisharaf!” at the disgruntled director of education, a Persian phrase that roughly translates to dishonourable and unethical. The chanting follows the headmaster accosting several girls over their refusal to wear their hijabs, a head covering worn by some Muslim women, in support of 22-year-old Masha Amini, who died in police detention after being detained for “unsuitable attire”.

The headmaster can be seen approaching a group of girls outside the front of the school. While they are wearing facemasks, the majority of them have refused to wear hijabs.

Several girls point at the teacher as he frantically tries to block their way into the school.

Plastic water bottles are thrown at the director of education as the situation becomes tense, and the children start to chant.

Eventually, as bottles filled with liquid are thrown, spilling onto the teacher’s attire, he retreats into the school.

Protesters have taken to the streets across 31 Iranian provinces, as well as other countries including Turkey, the UK, Lebanon, and France, over the treatment of women under Islamic rule.

Thousands of women have turned up in public without their hijabs, while others have staged public demonstrations cutting their hair.

Videos have also emerged of some women burning their veils.

While the protests were intended to be peaceful, a number of people have been kiilled.

Iranian state TV claims 41 demonstrators have died since protests began on September 17.

But other organisations suggest that figure could be considerably higher, with Norway-based group Iran Human Rights estimating the figure to be 133.

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking at a military ceremony on Monday, blamed the US for what he called “riots and insecurity”.

He said: “I say explicitly that these riots and this insecurity were a design by the US and the occupying, fake Zionist regime [Israel] and those who are paid by them, and some traitorous Iranians abroad helped them.

“In the accident that happened, a young woman passed away, which also pained us, but reactions to her death before investigations [take place] … when some come to make the streets insecure, burn Qurans, take hijabs off covered women, and burn mosques and people’s cars – they’re not a normal, natural reaction.”

Ms Amini was arrested on September 13 for wearing her hijab too loosely.

Under Iran’s Islamic dress code, the manner in which she was wearing her hijab was “unsuitable”.

She died three days later in hospital after falling into a coma.

Her family claim that a report from the hospital shows she “suffered a concussion from a blow to the head” while in police custody and that she died as a result of being “tortured” in those three days.

Iranian police say Ms Amini died of a heart attack and deny she was beaten to death in custody.
