I always happy whenever I see historian been approved at the embassy. Bro. Please reply my pm. Orlaboday: I have been a silent follower of this great platform and I had my interview on Saturday 4th August, 2018. I believe it’s only right for me to give back to prospective students/F1 visa applicants.
I got to Walter Carlington at 7:30am, interview time was meant to be for 9:30am (I had to arrive that early because I get paranoid when I’m running late or have to rush). My siblings had to park far away from the embassy and as I had to wait another 2hrs+ before the interview time, I felt tensed because of the long wait and as I sensed it was about to get to me, I had to walk around the parking area and squat a bit just to get the tension off me and to also get myself ready and confident. Left the park for the embassy at 9:00am and on getting to the embassy, to my surprise applicants for 9:30am have been passed in. My head was about to spin again but fortunately the man who was in charge came out and said all those with appointment time 7:30am to 10:30am should line up and we were gradually passed in.
We had to do the normal documentation and verification process and then the long wait again under the pavilion. Eventually, we got going and it was time to go to the main building for the interview proper. It was a big crowd as the hall was crowded to its brim. I was passed to a black lady who requested for my I-20 and Passport, returned it back after some minutes and I was directed to go for the fingerprint. Afterwards, I had to join a waiting queue to be directed to the different VOs/windows.
I was eventually directed to window 6, a white young lady.
VO - Good morning Me - Good morning! VO - Pass your passport and your I-20 Me - I did as told VO - Where are you going to? Me - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for a Masters in History and a major in African History VO - How many schools did you apply to? Me - 4 schools. In addition to SIUe, I applied to Illinois State University, Cleveland State University and Wright State University VO - How many admits? Me - I got admitted to all except Wright State University VO - So tell me what you know about SIUe Me - This kind of caught me by surprise but I responded quickly by saying SIUe is located in Edwardsville, Illinois and it was established in 1957 as a sister University to Southern Illinois University Carbondale VO - That’s okay! So why did you choose SIUe? Me - I chose SIUe because the History Department has done more research on the civilizations in Africa than the other schools and this is also my area of research interest. In addition, I was offered a full tuition waiver and a graduate assistantship VO - What would your research be about? Me - The influence of the Bantu civilization and migration on other African states VO - Oh interesting! I know a little about the Bantu civilization. So how much research have you done on it? Me - I haven’t done much research on it, I however have the advantage of working with professors who have done extensive research on the civilizations in Africa VO - I see you have an assistantship as well. What will you be doing as a GA? Me - I will assist a professor in taking an undergraduate class. I will also be in charge of grading papers and assignments and some other office duties that will be assigned to me when I get to Edwardsville VO - You said you worked as a research assistant in Helsinki. What was it about? Me - It was a EU-funded project aimed at understanding the difficulties highly educated immigrants face in getting jobs in their expertise in Finland VO - Did you study in Finland as well? Me - Yes (wrong answer - so I corrected myself) I told her no I didn’t study in Finland. I however studied in a neighboring country to Finland VO - So who paid for your education there? Me - My Dad but (I said something worthless afterwards) VO - Are you married? Me - No, I am not! VO - Kids? Me - No, I don’t have any kids VO - Okay (while stretching her hand to get the white paper) So you will get your passport at this location (she circled it) in 3/4 working days. Ensure you take your I-20 with you as you’ll be requested to show it at the POE Me - Thank you VO - Do have a nice day!
Profile: BA - History & International Studies (2:1) MA - International Relations & European-Asian Studies IELTS - 7.5 I got full funding to SIUe and partial funding to Illinois State University Travel History - I have lived in Europe for the past 5yrs and still have a valid residence permit. I have also traveled to Egypt, the UK, Ireland, Sweden (I am not sure how much of this counted)
I had a 14hr flight from Helsinki to Lagos on the 2nd-3rd August, a day to my interview and I didn’t get a proper sleep (anxiety coupled with the jetlag)
Big shout out and thanks to @Shayhune✌ and to everyone who has contributed positively on this page! |

Just decided to open an emergency account just because of your testimony? C'mon! This is Nigeria brother, We don't take sh*t! I/We need prove(s). Instead of diverting to defence mechanism just prove your points. Don't let your moniker disgrace you! sureb0yy: Told myself I wouldn't post anything on NL until something big changes for me.
July 2016: F1 visa approved. July 2018: GC approved. July 2018: Job offer accepted.
I'm now a legal permanent resident of this place... and I'm starting my job at progressive insurance on Monday 8/6 in the claims department. Not the best job in the world but I'd take $50k p.a. right now considering all I've been through lol. My second part-time job will earn me between $4h and $1k a month too so... not a bad start.
Now I can come back to NL and give advice like the old days to anyone who wants it. I don't remember the username of that guy who used to tackle me all the time with "body go tell you" posts. Baba, if you can read this, whether it's luck or not, I didn't encounter any of those scary things you predicted o.
Prospective NLers chasing the American dream, ask me whatever you need to know. Against all odds, I came here to study stupid course in a stupid school without any funding. 2 years later, it's all history. It took a bit of luck but who cares? I'm in a better place and that's what matters.
Don't let any keyboard warrior discourage you from chasing your dreams... keep sleeping! Lol. |

Big congrats my dear. God bless you! #durham_princess lalahhh: Im sorry but my post will be long. I decided to post this after seeing that my AP status changed to issued. First I’ll like to thank God for everything, Sorelee I thank you so so much, words can’t express how grateful I am to you. Ubah1 thank you for encouraging me. Kekenation thank you too. You guys are amazing. I have been to the embassy 7 times , 4 times last year and 3 times this year. I don’t think my last year’s transcripts would be necessary. So here’s my first interview transcript for this year. Me- Good morning VO- pass me your I 20 and passport VO- where are you going to? Me- North Carolina Central University, Durham, North Carolina for my masters in( VO cuts in) VO- what are you going for? Me- My Masters Degree in History VO- how did you get this assistantship? Me- The department’s Chair was impressed with my GRE, my transcript, statement of purpose and essay. VO- so why did you change course and school ? Me- sorry? I didn’t get that. VO- the last time you were here you were wanted to go to Arcadia so why change to NCCU? Me- Arcadia gave me partial scholarship while NCCU gave me the full ride and in NCCU, I get to minor in courses related to Peace and Conflict Resolution. VO- so who would pay for other expenses Me- I have family funds VO-which family? Me- My Uncle VO- what does he do? Me - he works with the Kwara state government, at the Lower Niger River Basin. VO- where does he live? Me- Kwara state She looks at the I 20 for a while then drops it She asked for bank statement which I gave to her She stared at it for a while , typed somethings ... In my mind I was just praying , then she asked VO- why is your Uncle paying Me- my parents sent his to school so this is more like a more thank you and he has the money VO- how many siblings do you have ? Me- 5 VO- which Uncle would be paying for them? Me- I am the last child VO - what’s the name of your Uncle Me- I said his name Then she picked up the I 20 again .... looked at it again and asked VO- are you married? Me- NO I’m not VO- do you have children? Me - No I don’t Then she finally said I’m sorry you are not found eligible at this time. This was lagos embassy. I was advised to try Abuja embassy and I did. Interview was for June 30th. VO- Good morning , Pass your I-20 Me- Answered her while passing it. VO- I see you have been denied in Lagos , why come to Abuja ? Me- after being denied I informed the school and I was asked to please try again but I checked Lagos embassy and I couldn’t get an early date but I got here in Abuja. VO- while nodding her head, what are you going to do in United States of America Me- I’m going for my masters in History in North Carolina Central University VO- how many schools did you apply to? Me- 4. University of Wyoming, Texas A&M, North Carolina A&T and NCCU. VO- I see you have full tuition waver Me - Ohh yes while opening all my 36 Then she picked up the white paper, in my mind I was saying Ohhh yes, come to Mama... I’m right here baby , then she looked at me my heartbeat increased rapidly. VO- where is you sister Me - Confused n lost .... sorry? VO- I said where is your sister? Me- she’s in USA on OTP VO- why isn’t she back? When did she travel? When is her date of birth? When did she travel? Me- ahhhh I don’t know the answers to all these questions.. we are not so close VO- wait I’m trying to help you out here Me - shaking, already disorganized Then she finally said it ... I’m sorry I won’t be issuing your visa. Me - why? What’s wrong? So I got home, with the mind of this is the end , called my sister and explained everything to her . She explained the part I mixed and begged me to go one more time, reluctantly I said ok. Luckily for me, we got July 19th on that same day. Truthfully I wasn’t so hyped about the last interview, I was dressed casually. I got interviewed by this middle aged woman on Ankara. A very nice woman I must add infact the nicest VO I ever came across. So here is the third transcript Me- Goodmorning VO- Good morning, you passport and I-20 please I gave it to her VO - ohhh NCCU Me - yeah North Carolina Central University VO- so who’s sponsoring you? Me- I have full tuition waver and family support VO- family support? Me- yea my uncle. VO- what does he do? Me- he works with Kwara state Government at the Lower Niger River Basin VO- Kwara state? Me- yea Kwara state. VO- where is that on the map? While looking at her map Me- can you see Oyo state? It’s right beside Oyo state. VO- ohhh wow , I can see it now . VO- I see you have been denied twice , what has changed about your application? Me- the last time I came here , i noticed the VO kept asking me questions about my sister that I didn’t know about and she ended up denying me. I went home, called my sister and she explained everything to me. VO- so explain it to me too Me- I did . Told her everything VO- you see the main reason why you have been denied all these while is because of your family history, you sister finished school and she didn’t return. Me- but she’s still in OTP and that’s my sister not me VO- i know and that’s why it’s called family history . il do you a favour , il overlook it Me- thank you so much VO- wait Me - in my mind, mo daran kilotun sele bayii VO- il place you on AP , if we find anything fraudulent about your documents, you will be banned from entering the USA for life. Me - No wahala , they are all real. VO- Are you sure? make sure you travel before classes starts or else you will be turned back at the port of entry. Me - ok ma’am. Thank you . Please can I pick up a tissue VO - sure please do, take as much as u need . Me- picked up the tissue and left I might have forgotten some questions asked sha but this is all I can remember. I have found this thread really helpful. The main thing is be well prepared, be organized and learn from people. Thank you so much once again Sorelee Ubah1 Kekenation Ekebs I really hope they issue yours too soon. |

This is what I call "Hitting the bull eye"....... Look at her first nairaland post! GraceofGodfollo: Thursday July 5 , 2018.
I left my hotel (same room i stayed for my last interview) at obalende to the embassy at around 5:30.. Got there around 5:45.. I walked confidently to the crowd.. I am sure they will think dis girl na jjc.. She doesnt know things are tough here, but I actually came to mark my third attendance within the past 7months, my first was Dec 5 then Dec 27.. Those are the days I was carrying Cleveland state university's i20 upandown. . To kill my moral one girl was asking me some kinda questions like she already knew I be "Customer da da ni".. All my answers were I donno. (someone cannot come and give me bad memories)
By 6am we were asked to come for the security check, I moved quickly to start the line .. After then, they called for 6:30 then I started the line also, cos that is how my spirit leads me.
Got in for biometics was the first and I did it like 5times before it worked. Then I went the start the interview queue waited for like 10mins.. Then the black American lady that did biometrics said somethings.. The CGI girl.. Said I should go and meet her, I was like asking her is it interview.. She was like "yes na what did u come here for " congrats in advance.
She greeted me My head no quickly booth to reply, so decided not to cos the pace was much already I need to be Real.
Vo: Who is sponsoring you

Thanks to sirRiddy, Ponpon, Chidindo, Ojah, Walspring and a lot of people I don't know their moniker.Nairaland has really help my life, CGPA (3.22/5), (WES 3.02/4), GRE below 300 ( very embarrassing, but my job didn't allow me read)
TOEFL - 84 ( didn't use it)
Masters in Mathematics- Schools applied to Etsu- Admitted (Got 50% scholarship, the dept cord said I should rewrite for an assistantship)
Tennessee tech uni- Admitted ( TA is filled, but got a mail to notify me of an RA in July)
Mtsu- Rejected Uni of Idaho- Rejected Georgia southern uni- Accepted with GTA, full tuition waiver and stipend
Youngstown state uni- Accepted but because of cgpa, they said I need to fund myself for the fall, then a GA in spring if I perform well in fall
Eastern Kentucky uni- Based on my rappor with the dept cord she is always mailing me to apply that she will offer me GA, but I didn't complete the application.
Advice Don't feel discourage because you don't have a ground breaking profile, this year I saw people with a 2.2 below 3.0 with a GRE below 310 getting full funding , a cgpa of 2.58 got full funding, mail profs, do ur research well, the sky will always be our starting point.
Thank you Nairaland |

Your WES GPA would definitely be in that region. 3.0/5 GPA (Nigeria scale) is equivalent to 3.0/4 GPA (USA scale). Johnthegreat: I greet everyone, please i need advice.
I tried to calculate GPA using free WES calculator, when i type in all the courses i did for 5yrs in engineering and click calculate the WES calculator will return me to the first page for me start all over again. I have done this several times.
But if i just do it year by year i will get the calculations, also that is how it is done in my transcript, after first year they get the cgpa, like that for 5yrs then the average is 2.87/5.
My problem is that when i did WES year by year and take the average for 5yrs i get gpa 2.822 which i assume is now on 4point scale.
Which means my cgpa of 2.87/5 is now gpa 2.822/4
Am i getting it all wrong, remember if i put all the 5yrs courses in WES calculator it keep returning me back to first page.
Please anyone can contribute ,thanks in advance. |

I visited my Uncle who is an old soldier and informed him that "I have won a schorlarship to further my eduation in the United States Of America" He was so happy that he immediately ordered his wife and children to slaughter his last goat for celebration. He invited some friends and family around, popped lots of Champagne and much more. We've just finished eating and drinking. Now I've been thinking of how to tell him it was April Fool.. Pls am still there since yesterday ooo. Help me out ooo |

Oh my God! This is one of those rear posts I've seen in years, This guy is just too much. Look at the way he handle the topic with zero insult . He articulated the issue with concrete examples. Bro. This post is priceless. Boss! May Almighty Allah continue to enrich your cranium and it's complement. Lastly, what's your AWA score when you took your GRE? bigfrancis21: I must say that you are getting emotional over this topic, and you sound like MBA is something you want to do. I didn't mean to get you upset if I did nor discourage you. You are also quite excited over the quoted figures you've seen online and you think it is that easy but you need to be aware of these:
1) I assume that you are in Nigeria and would be studying MBA on an F1 visa. MBA is not a STEM-designated course which means that you cannot be employed on an H1B visa after graduation by any company. You will not be eligible for OPT (3-year post-graduation work opportunity for STEM students). You would need to have permanent residency to be employable nowadays which may likely take you an extra 1 to 3 years post-graduation to obtain. By the time you obtain your residency, you would not have been 'fresh off from school' as some employers prefer. Even for STEM-designated courses, with Trump's administration, chances of H1B sponsorship nowadays are very very slim.
2) You probably don't know this but connection/knowing someone or 'networking' as they call it here is just as common as it is in Nigeria. Most of these people with 6 figures from an MBA landed their positions through old-boy friendships, connections or networking, in addition to having their MBA of course. An average Joe with an MBA can still land such high-paying positions but you have to be truly exceptional at what you do.
3) Speaking about your much-touted ROI. Now let us do the math. You spent $150,000 on average in heavy student debt to get an MBA. Let us assume that you are one lucky son of the stars and as an F1 student you graduated and out of nowhere got 'H1B sponsorship' at a $120,000 per year position right after graduation. Now you've worked so hard in school, made As and landed that $120,000 per year dream job. Wonderful.
Now you probably forgot that a heavy chunk of your income is taken away in taxes. For a $120,000 per year income, nearly $40,000 is taken from your paycheck in taxes. Precisely, $81,790 is what is left over after taxes are accounted for, which is about $6,815 per month. That is even though on paper it says that you earn $120,000, your actual take-home pay is $81,790 which is not 6-figures that you expected. https://www.taxformcalculator.com/tax/120000.html
Now it is time to start paying back all that student loan. The total amount which you will end up paying is probably over $200,000 which includes interest payments. You've graduated and the bank or financial institution has sent you a staggering bill of over $200,000 at xy% interest for 20 years with a monthly payment of $3250. Out of $6815 per month pay check ($3,145.26 every 2 weeks), you have to
- pay your student loan debt (anywhere between $3000 to $3,500 for that loan amount) per month. Read up here on this American who originally borrowed $68,000 to go to school who has to pay $113,000 back including interest. http://www.businessinsider.com/budget-paying-student-loans-2016-7 For this lady, she has to pay $2230 in monthly student loan payment for a bill of $113,000. For a bill of over $200k, you can expect your monthly payments to be nearly twice as $2230.
- pay your house rent (anywhere from $700 to $3000 depending on the housing type, number of rooms in the apartment rented, level of luxurious living) or monthly mortgage payments (if you bought a home) - pay your utilities (you pay for all the 24-hour light, gas, Internet and running water that you enjoy - $100 to $350 on average depending on your level of usage) - pay your monthly phone bill ($50 on average) - pay your monthly auto loan (anywhere from $250 to $400) - pay your monthly car insurance (anywhere from $80 to as high as $500 depending on how often you get into accidents, if you constantly get police tickets for overspeeding, running the red/stop light/sign etc. which stay on your driving record and bump up your monthly payments) - pay for gassing up for your car ($100 on average) - pay for feeding/groceries ($100 on average, that is if you can cook, which saves you more money than eating out) - credit card bills/debt (if you accumulate any) - miscellaneous expenses (such as parking tickets, tolls, relatives back home etc.)
Miscellaneous expenses: maybe in some months you manage to squeeze out $100 per month to save $500 and before you know it your family relative calls you from Nigeria telling you how they are suffering asking you to send them ordinary $1,000 so that they can start enjoying life. You look at your savings and you barely have $500 saved up and you don't know how to communicate this to your relative after all you already boasted to them sometime ago that you earn 6 figures per year. These calls just never stop coming in regularly. Now you are stuck in the rat race of majority of Americans - living from paycheck to paycheck and you dare cannot afford to lose your job.
At the end of the month, you are left with nothing as you struggle month to month servicing your $200k debt in student loans. High ROI isn't it? It would be so easy for you to imagine an adjusted $81,000 per annum salary on a debt of over $200,000 as good ROI. |
