Politics / Protest In Ondo Over Rec Adebayo by kellysopy(m): 12:50pm On Jul 26, 2010
Pro-democracy activists in Ondo State at the weekend concluded plans to protest the deployment of Mrs. Ayoka Adebayo as the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC).
The Nation learnt that the convener of the rally, Titiloye Charles, a lawyer, has contacted various groups for the gathering.

They want a court to decide whether Adebayo is fit to conduct polls in the state because of her resignation during the controversial rerun election in Ekiti State.

During the Ekiti polls, Mrs Adebayo disappeared and re-appeared to declare a disputed election result.

The court will also determine whether the cancellation of some results by the tribunal as declared by Mrs. Adebayo were not a judicial indictment which incapacitates her to act as a returning officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Also, a lawyer and rights activist, Morakinyo Ogele, gave seven days to INEC chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, to withdraw Mrs. Adebayo from the state.

He said if he does not, a writ of inandamus would be filed to remove her.

Ogele threatened to organise a black shirt peaceful demonstration in the state.

He accused Mrs. Adebayo of allegedly offering herself to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to rig the controversial rerun election in Ekiti last year.

He said: "There is a triangular criminal alliance by INEC, police and PDP in stealing peoples’ votes. We will not allow the replica of such incident in Ondo State."

Charles is a former Secretary of the Akure branch of the Naigerian Bar Association (NBA).

He said: "We are committed to this struggle to help Jega’s INEC purge itself of landmines like Adebayo. She was left behind by Prof. Maurice Iwu.

"An umpire must have the confidence of all and sundry. Since the announcement of Mrs Adebayo, major electoral stakeholders have unanimously condemned the decision."

He urged Jega to withdraw Mrs Adebayo in line with President Goodluck Jonathan’s commitment to fair polls.

Besides, the Nigeria United for Democracy (NUD) has described Mrs Adebayo’s posting to Ondo State as a tragedy for democracy.

In a statement by its chairman, Hon. Pius Omolola, NUD said it has rejected the appointment.

It described Mrs Adebayo’s relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the PDP as a threat to credible elections.

NUD said: "We want the public to know that her rapport with Obasanjo and PDP has automatically disqualified her from being posted to the state as REC."

The ruling Labour Party (LP) said posting Mrs. Adebayo was designed by the PDP to "capture" Ondo and Lagos states.

Obasanjo allegedly said this recently in Akure, the state capital.

NUD’s Director of Research and Publicity, Seyi James, said Mrs Adebayo’s posting to the state would be resisted by lovers of democracy.

Family / Nigerian Soldiers Father 250,000 Children In Liberia. by kellysopy(m): 1:18pm On Jul 22, 2010
According to the Director-General of the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa, DTCA Dr. Sule Yakubu, over 250,000 children were born to Nigerian soldiers who participated in peace keeping in ECOMOG operations in Liberia. The ECOMOG predominated by Nigerian soldiers, was formed as a peaceful intervention force during the civil war in Liberia in 1990.

Dr. Yakubu, who spoke during an interactive session with the Abike Dabiri-Erewa-led Committee on Diaspora said that majority of the children do not know their fathers while their mothers have been on a life-long search for their fathers, most of whom are believed to have re-located to Nigeria. In a brief chat with journalists after the meeting, the DTCA DG disclosed that the committee on Diaspora has agreed to visit Liberia to see for its self.

“Hon. Abike is going to undertake a trip to Liberia to find out what is happening and how we can engage with them and the like,” he said. Mr. Yakubu said “the mothers are trying to make sure they are properly documented as Liberians and so on,” he added. He however assured that though his agency is only concerned with the issues of experts and professionals in the Diaspora, “the Nigerian embassy in Liberia is doing something about it.”

He also said that the Federal Government “can’t run away from her own people they are our people; they are still young and they need schooling and they will also need to be nurtured just like every other Nigerian. The Committee was also briefed by a delegation of Nigerians living in Gabon, where over 200, 000 Nigerians are allegedly living illegally, and may be deported at the end of 2010.

The leader of the delegation, Mr. Babatunde Egin, who was assured of the Committee’s intervention, regretted that the Nigerian Government was one of a few countries without any ties with the French-speaking African Country.

Family / Black Parents Give Birth To White Baby. by kellysopy(m): 4:22pm On Jul 20, 2010
A BLACK couple coo over their new baby yesterday - a white, blue-eyed BLONDE. British Nmachi Ihegboro has amazed genetics experts who say the little girl is NOT an albino. Dad Ben, 44, a customer services adviser, admitted: "We both just sat there after the birth staring at her."

Mum Angela, 35, of Woolwich, South London, beamed as she said: "She's beautiful - a miracle baby."
Ben told yesterday how he was so shocked when Nmachi was born, he even joked: "Is she MINE?"
He added: "Actually, the first thing I did was look at her and say, 'What the flip?'"

But as the baby's older brother and sister - both black - crowded round the "little miracle" at their home in South London, Ben declared: "Of course she's mine." Blue-eyed blonde Nmachi, whose name means "Beauty of God" in the Nigerian couple's homeland, has baffled genetics experts because neither Ben nor wife Angela have ANY mixed-race family history.

What's your take on this?

Family / Re: Is It Proper To Make My Wife Next Of Kin? by kellysopy(m): 3:52pm On Jul 07, 2010
The reason I am beginning to have a second thought is that I have come to realise that the African culture does not favour women after the demise of a man, in most cases, they are seen as strangers and not part of the family hence, the torture and deprivation they are made to face. They assume she would spend the wealth their son has built over the years on another man.

on the other hand, if it is a son is seen as part of the family, he would enjoy the support of the family in the demise of the father. To crown it all, my wife is from the west while am from south-south.

I got married 2 years ago and my son is almost one. Recently, it stroke my mind that I should make my son next of kin, which used to be my wife. I must state that we are perfectly compatible and have a happy home. I do not intend to discuss this with her.

Do you think this would be a good decision?

Religion / Do You Belief In Wichcraft? by kellysopy(m): 10:35am On Jun 29, 2010
I read a book 'Belief in Witchcraft' which dwelled on how belief in witchcraft was brought to naught in western world and how Africans are still being backward because of their belief in witchcraft. An example was cited of how pastors in Akwa-Ibom State would tell parents that their child is a witch and the child is flogged to death in many cases, which the author said led to enactment of the child right Act in the state. this is a story as told by McVeigh:

The chief's niece, Mbet, was declared a witch when she was eight. her mother Ekaete, made her drink olive oil, then poisoned berries, then invited local men to beat her with sticks. the pastor padlocked her to a tree but unlocked her when her mother could not find the money for a deliverance. Mbet fled. Mbet, now 11, says she has not seen the woman since, adding: ' My mother is a wicked mother.'

DO you belief in witchcraft?

Politics / Bayelsa Deputy Governor Ebebi Impeached by kellysopy(m): 10:29am On Jun 25, 2010
Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Peremobowei Ebebi lost his job on Thursday following his impeachment by the House of Assembly.

His impeachment followed the House’s adoption of the report of the panel which investigated him for alleged misconduct.

The panel found him culpable on nine of the 10 allegations.

But Ebebi’s counsel, Alex Izinyon (SAN), described the lawmakers’ action as illegal.

He said his client had gone to court to challenge his impeachment and, as such, the House should not have impeached him before the case is decided.

Announcing the receipt of the panel’s report, Speaker Werinipre Seibarugu found Ebebi guilty on nine of the 10 charges levelled against him. He recalled the process Ebebi’s impeachment went through.

Hon. Jonathan Obuebite (Nembe constituency 1) moved a motion to adopt the report. It was seconded by Fini Angaye (Kolokuma/Opokuma II).

All members present voted in support of Ebebi’s impeachment.

“The Bayelsa State House of Assembly upon receipt of the report from the seven-man investigative panel deliberated extensively on the report and pursuant to Section 188(1) and (9) of the Constitution, the House adopted the report of the investigative panel and, accordingly, resolved that Rt. Hon. Peremobowei Ebebi, stand removed from office as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State of Nigeria,” said the Speaker in a document signed by the 18 members.

Ebebi was impeached six years after he, as speaker, led the House to impeach former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha in November, 2005.

Izinyon said since the matter was in court, the panel was expected to stay action, until the determination of the case.

He said his client challenged the composition of the panel, which was headed by counsel to the Governor.

“Until the allegations against the chairman of the panel, who is a counsel to the Governor is disproved by the court, we cannot have fair hearing from the panel,” Izinyon said, adding: “We are already in a competent court; the panel is inferior to the High Court”.

The state chapter of the Action Congress (AC) described the development as “pathetic and sad”, saying “while other states are commissioning state of the art projects, the Sylva-led administration is exercising undue strength and committing public funds to purely political matters at the expense of developmental projects”.

“The impeachment saga is another conduit pipe to defraud the state at a critical moment the state is in dire need of empowerment and development”, the AC statement, signed by Comrade Miriki Ebikibina, said.

A scramble has begun for Ebebi’s job. Those to the race are Nestor Binabor, the Deputy Speaker, who hails from Sagbama Local Government in Bayelsa West Senatorial district and Bekes Etifa, who hails from the same Ekeremo Local Government with Ebebi. But a source said last night that Ebebi would be replaced by Sylbriks Obriki, who is the Special Assistant (Domestic Affairs) to President Goodluck Jonathan. Obriki is from Ebibi Local Government Area.

He is considered to be “a moderate and a unifying figure”.
