Abuja - Residents of the FCT on Friday expressed
divergent opinions on free distribution of condoms by
civil society groups and health related NGOs as Valentine
celebrations approached.
Ahead of the February 14 valentine celebrations, condoms
were being distributed in parks and event centres in the
territory by the groups.
A cross section of Abuja resident who spoke welcomed
the gesture while others abhorred it.
Mr. Tunde Olabode, a teacher, said valentine as a season
of love, distributing condoms was not out of place and
not something new.
``The main purpose of this distribution is to discourage
the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and various
infections.
``It can also help in the control of the rate of abortion
among the youths,’’ he said
Olabode, however said that ``it can be negative when
one look at it from the perspective of religion which
forbids immorality’’.
A civil servant, Mrs. Nkechi Amadi, who said she was given
a roll of ten gold circle condoms, said there was nothing
wrong with the development.
Amadi said the NGOs were using the auspicious occasion
of valentine to give sex education on the dangers involved
in having unprotected sex.
``As parents, we give sex education to our children at
home, including the use of condoms; so I see nothing
wrong in what the NGOs are doing.
``It serves as a medium to tell the youths that they must
not have unprotected sex to have good health.
On the other hand, Miss Uche George, a civil servant said
that ``distributing condom openly is like encouraging
immoralities and evil in the society’’
She said the practice is ``Western way of life, not known
to Africa’’. She therefore advised that emphasis should be
placed on teaching moral values.
Mr Felix Ajide, a journalist and pastor said that the NGOs
have a misconception of what valentine celebration was
all about.
He noted that, ``distributing condoms openly is
endorsing and encouraging fornication and adultery’’.
Ajide explained ``love and sex are two different terms;
but this action makes people to believe that the terms
mean the same thing’’
``Valentine’s Day is a day originally celebrated to
remember the love that God has for man and the love
man is expected to have for his neighbour.
``However, we are losing focus on the main point and
now trying to focus on sex and lust’’.
Ajide stressed that Valentine’s Day must not be used as an
excuse for erotic love, but a day to celebrate the love and
care received from our loved ones.
``I urge these NGO’s to find measures that focus on love
and not sex.
``The sexual encounter between people that are not
partners should be discouraged.
``They are not helping the society. Instead, they should
distribute materials that encourage genuine love amongst
the public,” he added. (NAN) |

A retired radiologist and the eldest child of late
Ologbosere of Warri Kingdom, Chief O. N. Rewane, was
yesterday burnt to death in an early morning fire in Lagos.
The
cause of the fire that killed the 75-year-old Dr. Irene
Damola (nee Rewane) at her 5, Tola Adewunmi Street,
Maryland, Lagos residence, could not be ascertained at
press time.
Vanguard gathered that the fire started from her
bedroom in the duplex occupied by her and a domestic
staff.
Eyewitnesses said smoke was noticed upstairs at
midnight, following which security men raised alarm.
Efforts by the private guards in the street to put out the
fire failed.
Eyewitnesses said: “Some people even attempted to move
in to rescue Dr. Damola, but the entrance door was
locked.
“The young lady living with her later opened the door. By
the time the fire was put out by the fire service men, she
had been burnt to death.”
Lagos State Fire Service Director, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, said
the fire service got to the scene at about 4.02a.m. as soon
as they got the information and tried to save the lives of
the occupants.
He said: “It is a five-bedroom apartment. The woman, Dr.
Irene Damola, lives upstairs, while the young lady staying
with her lives downstairs. The fire started from her
bedroom.
“She made efforts to escape, but the fire caught up with
her at the door of her bedroom, where my men met her
dead.
“We were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the
ground floor. The corpse was handed over to policemen
from Anthony Village Division.”
Late Dr. Damola retired as a radiologist in Saudi Arabia
before returning to Nigeria. She also worked at Lagos

Some unfortunate peeps still go ahead to add sugar in yam.. ![]() |
Benin - A Dietician in the Department of Dietetics,
University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Mr Peter Stephen,
on Tuesday advised against peeling of yam before cooking
it.
Stephen said in Benin that cooking yam with the skin
reduced its sugar content.
He noted that yam and rice had high Glycemic Index (GI)
which increased blood sugar level, and advised that yam
should not be peeled before cooking to reduce the sugar
content. GI is a numerical scale used to indicate how fast and how high a particular food can raise blood glucose (blood sugar) level. ``The skin of yam that is normally peeled off contains proteins and vitamin B Complex. “It also has soluble fibre that absorbs sugar inside the yam. ‘’When the yam is properly cooked, you peel off the skin before eating. “When you cook your yam with the skin, it will not increase the blood sugar level. ``By the time you eat the yam with vegetables, it gives you a better result,” he said. Stephen listed foods with low GI to include tomatoes, soya beans and beans. He noted that such foods had natural substances lowered blood sugar level. He advised people, especially diabetic patients, to mix foods with low GI with those with high GI in the ratio of 2:1 to maintain a good blood sugar level. “Rice has high GI; so, if you want to eat it, mix it with food with low GI such as beans. “If you take five spoons of rice, you have to take 10 spoons of beans to help to slow down the rate sugar is absorbed in the blood. “Even if you are not diabetic, you have to control your sugar level because prevention is better than cure,” the dietician advised. The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB,
yesterday warned against the careless killing of its
members by security agents, lamenting that over 1,000
members of the group have been publicly and secretly
killed since their leader was arrested and detained.
Also yesterday, the Abia Police Command explained the
death of the praying IPOB members in Aba.
The IPOB Media and Publicity Officer, Mr. Emma Powerful
gave the warning while addressing newsmen in Nnewi
after their meeting to review their activities and to
determine options that will be followed to check the
incessant killing of the members for engaging in peaceful
protests.
“We wonder what these soldiers and policemen who are
killing our innocent members because they embarked on
peaceful demonstration to demand the unconditional
release of our leader and Director of Radio Biafra Mr.
Nnamdi Kanu, are doing in the South East when their
marksmanship is needed in the North East to check the
activities of the Boko haram insurgents who are killing
people on daily basis. |

Leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and
operator of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu on Tuesday
morning arrived the Federal High Court Abuja for the
commencement of his trial, but refused to come down
from the prison van.
This led the prison officials to call his lawyer, Chuks
Mouma, who after much persuasion was able to get Kanu
to come down from the vehicle. He however refused to
take off the handcuffs on him even while being led to the
courtroom.
The Department of State Services, DSS, had arraigned the
embattled Director of Radio Biafra before Justice Ahmed
Mohammed of the same court on a six-count charge of
treasonable felony but the matter could not be continued
following Kanu’s vote of no confidence on Mohammed.
Following Kanu’s vote of no confidence on the judge, the
matter was brought before Justice John Tsoho.
The defence counsel, Mouma had on January 25, filed an
application before the Tsoho-led court seeking for an
adjournment on the consideration of bail.
Following the application, Justice John Tsoho had
adjourned the matter till January 29 for ruling on the bail
application.
Justice Tsoho in his ruling on January 29, denied Kanu bail
on the ground that he was a threat to national security. Tsoho held that if Kanu was granted bail, he may go back and commit the same crime for which he was been prosecuted, adding that he may jump bail due to his dual citizenship. He consequently adjourned the matter till today, February 9, for commencement of trial. |

The leadership of St. John’s Anglican Church, Agbarho in
Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State was
thrown into confusion when the church vicar, scheduled
to lead a team of ministers at a funeral service, suddenly
died after he was rushed to hospital.
Venerable Stephen Eseteru Ogue, JP, 53, author of several
Christian books, including ‘Escathology: The rapture of the
Saints’, ‘Foundation for marital bliss’ and ‘The potential
power of the Holy Spirit’, died at about 7.45 a.m. on
Friday, December 11, 2015, two hours before he was
billed to officiate at a funeral service. Until his sudden
death of cardiac arrest at Lily Hospital, Deco Road, Warri,
the Anglican venerable, according to his first daughter,
Oghenenyoreme Ogue, was suffering from diabetes and
high blood pressure.
The hearse
conveying the
remains of the
woman whose
burial the paster
was supposed to
preside at,
mourners,
including a large
delegation of the
church’s Women
Guild as well as
members of the
Anglican Fasting
and Prayer
Society, had
gathered in front
of the church
building as early
as 9.25 a.m. for the service billed for 10.00 a.m.
Unaware of the tragedy that had occurred, the mourners,
who had been warned the previous night against lateness
to the funeral service, waited patiently for the officiating
ministers to receive the body at the West Door (entrance
of the church) in accordance with Anglican doctrine but
no pastor was in sight. Meanwhile, other members of the
church and visitors kept trooping into the church
premises for the funeral service.
Worried by the development, members of the mourning
family began to call the vicar’s phone line and a voice
answering to urge them to be patient. The calls to
Reverend Friday Erutere, billed to assist the venerable at
the funeral service, were initially ignored until he
answered to similarly sue for patience, saying he was on
his way to the church.
Erutere, who conducted the service of songs with Rev.
Wisdom Eghagha, the previous night, had warned against
lateness, stressing that, in Anglican Church, such lapse
attracts a fine of N10,000.
After about 45 minutes delay, a Toyota car, said to be
owned by the vicar/archdeacon, hurried into the church
premises and made its way straight to the staff quarters
,to the relief of those waiting outside the church.
Immediately, people started regrouping around the
hearse with the hope that the service would soon begin.
But, the relief soon turned to despair when the
regrouping band of mourners discovered that the
occupants of the car were only two female members of
the family and the pastor’s driver.
The waiting had just begun. In the anxiety, nobody
observed that the car, which was later learnt to have
taken the venerable out of the church premises that early
morning, did not bring him back. The only occupants of
the car at that moment besides the driver, were his wife,
Felicia and his eldest daughter, Oghenenyoreme.
Eventually, 60 minutes after the scheduled time of service,
Erutere, accompanied by two others, arrived at the West
Door to officially receive the corpse and proceeded with
the funeral service.
Despite the commencement of proceedings, anxiety was
still palpable as church members continued to ask after
the whereabouts of the venerable, who had, on several
occasions, enjoined members of the Women’s Guild to be
punctual for that particular service and had promised to
lead the church delegation to Okpara Inland for the
interment. Nobody was providing answers to questions.
Not even his assistant who, some observed later,
appeared agitated and confused to the extent that, for
the first time in a funeral service, there was no
communion and there was no offertory. By far, the most
worrisome was the treatment accorded the National
President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN,
Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, who took time off his church’s
three -day crusade at the Warri Township Stadium, as a
mark of honour for the fallen mother.
As the mourners departed the church for Okpara Inland,
venue of the interment, there was no word about the
sudden death of the vicar of the Agbarho church where
another Anglican canon, Rev. Benedict Akpoguma, took
over proceedings. Put simply, neither the mourners nor
well wishers, who had travelled from long distances,
including Mr. John Salubi of the NNPC, Dr. Francis
Eghwubare of Delta State University, Mr. Joshua
Onoronimighwu of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Victor
Onogagamue of Delta State Sports Commission, Barrister
Joseph Ogedegbe, and a former NBA Chairman of
Ughelli Local Government, were briefed on the reason for
the funeral’s delay.
When our correspondent visited the home of the vicar,
the wife [Felicia] was lying on the bed despondent with a
few church members shielding her and making sure her
health condition did not degenerate. Only the first
daughter, Oghenenyoreme, could volunteer
comments, although, she was unable to explain the
mystery behind the death of her father, as, according to
her, they were trained to submit to the will of God in all
circumstances.
However, the daughter said they had prayed together that
morning in accordance with family tradition, without any
visible signs of danger, and the ebullient father retired to
the couch in the sitting room apparently to relax.
“After a while, I noticed that daddy was no longer
breathing normally and I raised the alarm to draw my
mum’s attention. She quickly called the driver and we
carried him to the car and drove straight to the hospital in
Warri. That is all I can tell you, because nobody told us
anything about his state of health until the bishop came
later that day to break the sad news to us,” she tearfully
narrated. |

This post actually belongs to the crime dept. . . But I prefer to share it here police in Lagos State have arrested a 37-year-oldman for allegedly raping a mentally-challenged girl (names withheld). It was learned that the suspect, Adesola Moses, who resides at Osenatuilo Street, Alagbado by AIT Road, reportedly raped the victim in her mother’s shop. Vanguard gathered that the suspect took advantage of the victim’s mental health and had anal sex with her. According to a family member who spoke to Vanguard, the victim’s mother, Muiynant Mustapha, left her 19-year-old daughter in her shop to attend a party, when the suspect sneaked into the shop, asked the girl to remove her clothes and raped her. The relative said: “While the act was ongoing, a 10-year-old girl, Tunrayo, daughter of the landlord, who usually plays with the victim, saw them and ran out to alert people. By the time people got to the shop, the suspect had escaped.” It was learned that in a bid to identify the suspect, the elders in the community gathered 12 young men in the area and Tunrayo was able to identify the suspect, who had changed his clothes to avoid recognition... 'Where's the knife Lemme castrate dis man !!!' |
Couldn't wait to share this ooo!!! Lalasticlala .There were three men living together in London. An Afro-American, a West Indian and a Nigerian. They were all starving because they didn't have money to buy food. However upon coming close to a posh London restaurant in this classy neighbourhood, they decided to come up with a plan. The Afro-American went in first. After being seated, he ordered a three course meal with white wine. When he had finished the meal, the waiter came by with the bill. "LISTEN MY MAN, I ALREADY PAID YOU!" - the Afro-American shouted! The waiter was very confused because he could not remember being paid. But because he did not want to cause any trouble, he let the brother leave. Five minutes later, the West Indian walked into the same restaurant and ordered a five course meal with red wine. When he was finished eating, the waiter came by to collect the money for the food. "HEY, HEY, LOOK AT ME CROSSES. BUT AH PAID YOU ALREADY!" - the West Indian shouted. This time the manager came and had to calm down the West Indian, because he did not want anything to upset the other customers. He let the guy go. Ten minutes later, the Nigerian walked in. And you know how we are. He sat down. Lit up a cigarette, and ordered the most expensive meal on the menu, plus two bottles of Beer. After he had finished, the waiter came to collect the money for the meal, But before the Nigerian could say anything, the waiter spoke to him."Sir, I have been having all sorts of problems all day and I can't understand it. Two other people like you came in earlier and ate, and they say that they paid me but I don't remember getting any money from them so, " Before he could finish, the Nigerian interrupted, rather emphatically, "OGA I SORRY FOR YOU OOOO. BUT DAT NA YOUR PROBLEM. I JUST WANT YOU TO GIVE ME MY CHANGE!!" . Nigerians tho ,I'm sure d dude is from d east!!.. IGBO KWENU!!! |
