Events / World Crash Remembrance Day: 60 Die In 179 Crashes In Anambra by kelvee(m): 12:44pm On Nov 17, 2016
Awka – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Thursday said no fewer than 60 persons had died in about 179 road crashes in Anambra in the last 10 months.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Mr Sunday Ajayi, said this while addressing journalists on the 2016 edition of “African Road safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims”.
Ajayi said the theme of the four-day celebration was “Vital Post-Crash Action; Medical Care, Investigation and Justice”.
He also said that no fewer than 387 persons involved in such crashes were wounded.
According to him, the theme was to draw attention to the best way accident victims could be attended to minimise casualties and save lives.
He said the FRSC as the lead safety agency on the road was using the occasion to educate the public that damage could be reduced if there was enough awareness on their role of in the event traffic crash.
“This celebration was approved by the United Nations in 2005 to raise awareness and identify with families and friends of crash victims.
“In Anambra, there had been 179 road traffic crashes out of which 60 persons have died, while 387 are injured.
“We want to tell people that it is longer time to take pictures at crash scenes instead of providing help, there is need to understand why these crashes take place and we need to check impunity on the roads,” he said.
The activities marking the event include Mass Rally, Juma’ at Prayer, Executive Walk, Hospital visitation, Candle light procession, enlightenment lectures and Thanksgiving service.
Crime / Group Condemns Mob Killing Of Boy Who Allegedly Stole In Lagos by kelvee(m): 11:29am On Nov 17, 2016
*Asks Ambode to bring perpetrators to book
Following the mob killing of a boy, who allegedly stole in Lagos, civil society group, Wailing Wailers has called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to bring the perpetrators to book.
A video which went virile on social media showed some group of people beating, stoning and finally setting a boy between the age 7-16 ablaze, for allegedly stealing garri.
This is even as some accounts circulating on social media said the young boy allegedly stone a phone and stabbed the victim.
Vanguard however, could not verify the authenticity of these claims at press time.
In a statement by Usman Abubakar, the Acting National Publicity Secretary, Wailing Wailers, the group said: “We want to call the attention of the Governor of Lagos State Governor, His Excellency Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to the cruelty meted against one young man reported to be between the age of 7-16 years old accused of stealing Garri in Badagry area of Lagos State.
“The boy was killed by mob action as seen in the video circulating on social media, a copy posted and pinned to our official Twitter Handle @NGRWailers.
“We as a group, concerned with democracy and civic rights of Nigerian citizens totally condemn the sadistic and barbaric act of the killers in strong terms.
“We call on Mr. Governor as the Chief Security officer of the state and all the state security agencies to wade into actions immediately and bring the perpetrators to book, the gory videos and pictures circulating on the internet can be leads to the arrest of killers of the young man.
“We don’t encourage any citizen to engage in any theft, criminality or stealing of any form but even if the boy stole more than Garri as alleged online by some section of sympathizers, that does not warrant that the people should take laws into their own hands, at best, he could have been handed over to the nearest police station for investigation and be dealt with in accordance with the law of the land.
“The matter have become a subject of national discourse and the good people of Nigeria wants to know how the state governor will handle the case to ensure that the family of the young man gets a fair justice for the deceased.
“The worrisome and sad part as shown in the clip was that matured Nigerians, male and female who are likely to be residence of the area gathered and watched how the boy was subjected to a horrible pain before his death.
“Some of them were even encouraging the killer on how he should kill the boy, this does not speak well of the oneness, peace, tolerance and love our forefathers fought very hard to achieve under a democratic setting in Nigeria.
“There were many other cases of jungle justice which have been swept under the carpet; the #ALUU4 saga is still fresh in our memory where four young University undergraduates were killed and sent to early grave in cold blood by Aluu community in Rivers State on the allegation of cultism and robbery which has not been proven nor substantiated till date.
“Nigeria is not a lawless country where citizens can take laws into their own hands, unfortunately, Nigerian government and security who are the law enforcers have not laid a good example with the recent killings of Indigenous People of Biafra agitators and members of Islamic Movements of Nigeria (Shiites).
“The mindless killing of the young man and fellow citizen should be thoroughly investigated and his killers be brought to book to serve as deterrent to others who may likely engage in such heinous acts.”

Crime / Pastor Takes Friend’s 5-yr-old Son To Abuja For Sale by kelvee(m): 9:00am On Nov 17, 2016
MAKURDI— A 42-year-old farmer, Unogwu Agbese, who allegedly abducted his friend’s five-year-old son to sell off in Abuja, has been arrested by Benue state Police Command.
Also, a 41-year-old man, Raphael Igye, who claimed to be a pastor, was arrested for alleged human trafficking.
Parading the suspects in Makurdi, the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Bashir Makama, who was represented by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, said the suspects were arrested at Gboko and Ado Local Government areas, respectively.
According to the Police Commissioner, “the pastor picked the children from Chito in Ukum Local Government Area where he claimed he has a church, but was intercepted at Mkar in Gboko with the three teenagers, heading to Lagos, saying he was going to enroll them in school.
“The case of the abducted five-year-old was reported by his father, Emmanuel Edeh at Apa-Agila. He had reported that his son was, last week, abducted by the suspect, who took the boy to Abuja without his parents’ consent.
“However, he ran out of luck and was arrested and the child recovered from him unhurt.”
Meanwhile, when asked why he abducted the child, Unogwu said: “The boy is my friend’s son. I actually took him to Abuja to sell him, but I couldn’t find any buyer or anyone that could connect me to a buyer. So I brought him back to the village and his parents arrested me.”
Paraded alongside the human traffickers were four other robbery suspects, who were arrested in Ogbadibo and Vandeikya Local Government areas.

Family / Should You Raise A Gender Neutral Child? by kelvee(m): 8:07am On Nov 17, 2016
Globally, a growing number of parents, teachers and experts, are choosing to break free of traditional gender stereotypes by adopting a “gender neutral” approach to raising their kids. The trend, though still fairly new in Nigeria, is also gradually being embraced by some new generation parents. But what really is gender-neutral parenting and could it be a path towards achieving gender equilibrium? Woman’s Own writes.

Strict gender segregation in clothing colours, toys and activities might be a relatively recent phenomenon, but so popular is the trend, that it’s now the norm...

Celebrities / 2 Deaths In Nollywood: Ansa Bassey And Kudirat Ajimat Die In 24 Hours by kelvee(m): 8:46pm On Nov 15, 2016
First was the news of Nollywood film-maker and Director, Ansa Bassey Kpokpogri, a Calabar-born mother of one who passed away after complaining of pains from peptic ulcer.
Announcing her death, film-maker
Uduak Isong Oguamanam , younger sister of Emem Isong , took to her Facebook to write a glowing tribute that reads, ‘Grief. It makes you remember things. Minute details, like the sound of their feet, the colour of their hair and the sweet smell of their body spray. It makes you regret. The holidays you never took, the movies you never watched together, the visits you kept planning to but never made. It reminds you of your own mortality. You wonder if there’s a row call and what your number is on the list. Death doesn’t warn you. One moment you’re laughing with a loved one, your head thrown back, with wanton abandon, the next your eyes are bloodshot from weeping for a loss so deep no one can understand. I’ll never understand, never come to terms with your death. You were many things to me; Friend. Sister. Business partner. Supporter. Colleague. My life was better because you were in it. Sleep well my beautiful, adorable, amazing Ansa. Till we meet again to part no more’.
Not long after, news of the death of Yoruba actress, Kudirat Ajimat was announced by TAMPAN in a statement that reads, ‘It saddens our association Theatre Arts and Movie Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Ogun State Chapter, to announce the untimely death of our beloved sister/colleague Kudirat Ajimat popularly known and called Ajimat. The news of her death got to us this morning as a shocker but we don’t have power to stop God from doing what is right in HIS sight. We will seriously miss you and your friendly lifestyle. RIP.’

Religion / It Is Actually The Man That Should Be In The Kitchen In Islam– Aliyu by kelvee(m): 7:42am On Nov 15, 2016
Minna—THE former governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has said that although it is widely held that the place of the woman was in the kitchen, “men also belong there.”
President Muhammadu Buhari had, recently in Germany, declared that women belonged to the kitchen and the inner room in reply to his wife’s protest that some unknown politicians had taken over the administration from her husband.
Aliyu, who spoke in Minna, Niger State capital, at the annual lecture series organised by Newgate College of Technology, said: “Looking at the issue critically, and in Islamic terms, it is actually the man that should be in the kitchen as provided for in the Holy Quran.
“The woman should only be in the ‘inner room,’ while the men should provide all the needs of the woman, including making purchases from the market for the use of the family.
“Islam does not permit women to go out indiscriminately, as they are supposed to be in the house taking care of the children.”
Dr. Aliyu, however, said that no matter the situation, especially during recession period, both husband and wife were supposed to work hand-in-hand by supporting each other for the good of the family and society.
He also faulted men who took many wives under the guise of religion, saying “the era of men taking many wives has gone.
“Those that have married more than one wife and claimed that the scriptures allow it are doing so ignorantly and out of the tenets of Islam.
“What the law says is that if you can be faithful and fair to two wives, you are allowed to take more than one wife. But I don’t see how a man can be faithful and fair to more than one wife at a time.”

Education / JAMB Introduces Flexible Cut-off Marks For Admission Seekers by kelvee(m): 7:33am On Nov 15, 2016
By Chester Yakubu,
Abuja – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced flexible cut-off marks to expand admissions to tertiary institutions of learning in the country.
Registrar of the Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede stated this on Monday at the second technical committee meeting on “2016 Admissions to Tertiary Institutions” held at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri.
According to the Registrar, the meeting was principally aimed at finding solution to the army of admission seekers who were admitted in the first batch. “The purpose of today’s meeting is essentially to consider admissions of our teeming applicants who were not considered during the first exercise.
Your Excellency, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, kindly recall that at the two (2) previous meetings in Kano and Abuja, I stated that the Board would cooperate with the various institutions in carrying out the mandates of their respective Senates and Academic Boards on admission matters. Therefore, the Board would not impose candidates on them but, as a referee, would ensure that no applicant is unjustifiably denied the opportunity of access to tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” said Oloyede in his opening remarks.
Oloyede noted that the Board will continue to get involve in admission matters in a way that reflects national concern in a season of change, devoid of corruption. This, he stated has already received the blessings of the Education Minister and other education stakeholders across the length and breadth of the country. “In this respect, we should be seen in a conspicuous and proven manner that we have the interest of the nation in mind in carrying out our statutory functions. I am pleased to note that we adhered to all the decisionsreached at the 2016-Policy Meeting chaired by our effective and efficient Honorable Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu,” he said adding that as “expected of any responsible institution under a national dispensation that is uncompromisingly averse to corruption and lack of transparency, no review of any policy will be selective, sectional or an under the table-deal.”
On the controversial minimum cut-off mark for admission into tertiary institution, Oloyede said time had come to review same; noting that uniformity across board should not be encouraged, arguing that since the various institutions award different categories of certificates; same cut-off mark is untenable. His words: “Let me in this connection, address the issue of the minimum national cut-off mark which is normally decided at the Policy Meetings. By way of information, the Policy Meeting is one that comprises the Honourable Minister of Education as the Chairman, the Heads of Regulatory Bodies in the Education Sector such as NUC, NBTE, NABTEB, NCCE, the Heads of Tertiary Institutions, the Board and other Stakeholders. It was at this meeting that a decision of 180 as the 2016 National cut-off mark was reached. However, many Institutions, though part of the decision, have expressed concern on their inability to effect this cut-off mark as they are finding it difficult to fill a reasonable percentage of their quota if the rule is strictly applied ….”
For the ex-Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, the inability of some institutions to fill their admission quota due to the strict implementation of the 180 minimum cut-off mark is a disservice to the nation’s quest for expansion of education as a tool of change and development. “As a Board, we have studied the trend of admissions and have come up with a finding that hardly do the institutions collectively fill their quota annually. Indeed, in some cases, up to 50% of approved quota is wasted particularly by upright institutions which do not circumspect the rule. Unfortunately, a large number of institutions flagrantly disregarded the cut-off and many other policies. Yet they found a way to eventually regularize the illegal admissions through corrupt process,” the JAMB boss further added.
Apparently to send a warning to his staff, Oloyede stated that even before he assumed duties at the Board, his predecessor had sanctioned those found to have been complicit in shady admission practices. “Shortly before my assumption of office, twelve officials of JAMB who had conspired with officials of some institutions to abuse the regularization process were dismissed from service,” adding that JAMB “has insisted on total recovery of millions of Naira involved in the deal.”
JAMB, he said has collated the requests from the various Senates and Academic Boards and have made our pleas known to appropriate authorities. The former VC also expressed joy in the fact that though the initiative is only a few months old, change is already being felt. “Just this morning we received a green light on flexible cut-off mark only for institutions which have exhausted the list of candidates with180 and above, subject, of course to a minimum acceptable to JAMB and meeting of other pre requisites.
In addition we have re opened the portal for change of institutions and courses so that institutions and candidates can legitimately without any need for regularization, effect change of course at the point of entry rather than National Youth Service Corps, NYSC- inspired regularization with attendant abuse. I have given a personal and official assurance to NYSC that all abuse/loopholes have been blocked,” he stressed.
On the need to be service-driven, the JAMB boss noted that a lot still need to be done, saying a lot has evolved over the years; more still need to be done. He said, “Service delivery is aimed at improving the value of services rendered. As a Board, we are reviewing the process of some of our service delivery platforms to the public aimed at enhancing our services to the public in line with international best practices that will eliminate some of the difficulties our clients go through in accessing our services.
The Board has therefore created on-line platforms for such services as purchase of application documents, change of course/institution, correction of data, etc., adding that “the platform provides for all the services candidates may require from the Board without increasing the service charge. It is no longer required of any applicant to travel to Bwari for any of the services. They are on line. Help desks on line, have also been opened. The beauty of it is that Heads of Institutions are directly involved in these processes because of the need to ensure transparency, accountability and completely eradicate abuses that were prevalent in the old order.”
In the years ahead, Oloyede said Nigerians would be proud of JAMB in their service to the country even as he prayed for the cooperation and understanding of all and sundry in the task of making the Board better than he met it.

Religion / The Believer’s Blessing In Christ Jesus by kelvee(m): 8:31am On Nov 13, 2016
The believer in Christ Jesus is already blessed. Therefore, he cannot be cursed. You cannot curse someone that God has blessed.
In no other department has the Christian church gone as completely astray as on the issue of tithes and offerings. Week in week out, Christian congregations are exhorted, harassed, cajoled, blackmailed, threatened and bewitched into giving more and more tithes and offerings.
All kinds of scriptures are distorted twisted and manipulated to get people to give more and more. If you did not know better, you would think the whole essence of the Christian walk is to pay tithes and give offerings. The average pastor preaches more about “Sowing and Reaping” and “Giving and Receiving” than any other message.
Curse of Malachi
In this regard, the favourite scripture of pastors in the bible is Malachi 3:8-10. It is used to cajole people to give on the grounds that those who withhold tithes and offerings are robbing God. It is further maintained they are cursed and their resources subject to the ravages of the devourer. Finally it is said that the windows of heaven are shut against them ensuring that they are denied divine blessings. Thereby, people are scared into giving large sums to the church.
Pastors and evangelists are able to use Malachi to frighten and arm-twist believers today because Christians have no understanding of kingdom dynamics. As a result, they put old wine in new bottles. When the Pharisees insisted divorce was lawful because the Law of Moses sanctioned it, Jesus pointed out that it was because of the hardness of their hearts that Moses permitted it. But from the beginning it was not God’s intention. (Matthew 19:cool. A similar principle applies to Malachi and the question of tithes and offerings.
Malachi wrote about tithes and offerings because of the hardness of the heart of the Jews in his days. They did not have a giving nature. God gave them the Law of Moses because he knew they would not do the right thing unless they were compelled to do so. But instead of the Law of Moses God, has now given the believer in Christ Jesus the “law of liberty.” (James 1:25).
In spite of the law, the Jews were still not inclined to give. Therefore God, through Malachi, called them robbers of God, and threatened them with curses, the devourer and the denial of blessings.
Love of God
The application of Malachi’s curses to believers today is insulting. Once a man makes it a law that you must pay tithes and offerings, he has spoilt you for the gospel. He has already determined that you are a lawbreaker, that you are hard-hearted and that you are not a believer. He has concluded that it is not in your nature to give. If you fulfil his law, you are agreeing with him that you are an unbeliever. Therefore, never give tithes or offerings because of any “legal” requirements. The only basis for action that is acceptable in Christ is love.
How can you get a believer in Christ to do the right thing? You don’t have to do anything at all because a true believer will always do the right thing. A true believer will do the right thing because he is a new creation; therefore it is in his nature to do the right thing. Nobody has to compel him or threaten him. Nobody needs to manipulate or bewitch him. Doing the right thing is the fruit of his Spirit.
When Samuel was explaining the dynamics of the kingdom of God to Saul, he told him the Spirit of the Lord would come mightily upon him and he would start to prophecy like one of the prophets. When that happened, Samuel told Saul to do whatever seemed best to him for God would guide him. (1 Samuel 10:7). Saul would not need for any man to teach him what to do: he would do it naturally.
Holy Spirit guidance
Jesus also states this principle to his disciples. (Matthew 10:18-20). It is this same dynamic that John refers to when he says the anointing of the Holy Spirit will teach believers all things: “You have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, in your hearts, so that you don’t need anyone to teach you what is right. For he teaches you all things.” (1 John 2:27).
This was the case with Abraham. When Abraham gave a tithe (tenth) of all his spoils of war to Melchizedec, a priest of the Most High God, nobody told him to do so. He did it of his own free will. The pureness of Abraham’s heart naturally led to his godly decision to honour the Lord with his possessions and with the first fruits of the increase in his resources.
Believers should recognize that God is a God of free will. The bible says where the Spirit of God is there is liberty. Jesus said to the Pharisees concerning divorce: “From the beginning it was not so.” (Matthew 19:cool. So many things have been corrupted by practice and by the traditions of men, but from the beginning that was not so.
Cheerful giver
From the beginning, people were not compelled or threatened to give. Even in the Old Testament, God only welcomed offerings that were given willingly and not out of compulsion. Thus, he instructed Moses: “Take from among you an offering to the LORD. Whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it as an offering to the LORD: gold, silver, and bronze.” (Exodus 35:5).
Indeed, in the construction and furnishing of God’s Tabernacle, the people gave so willingly and so exceedingly that they had to be restrained from giving: “The people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient for all the work to be done- indeed too much.” (Exodus 36:5-7). That is the kind of giving that honours the Lord.
This means the believer who gives “of necessity” (because he feels compelled to do so) is giving a blemished sacrifice. You don’t give because you are trying to avoid curses or because you are afraid of the devourer. You give because you want to. You give because you love God and men. You give because you want to further kingdom business.
This means that you can decide to give this proportion of your income this month and another proportion next month. The decision is entirely up to you. Moreover, if you choose not to give, the heavens are not going to fall down on you. If you choose not to give, God is not going to rain down curses on you. If you choose not to give, the devourer is not going to be let loose on you. If you choose not to give, the windows of heaven will not be shut against you.
Let no one deceive you. The believer in Christ Jesus is already blessed. Therefore, he cannot be cursed. You cannot curse someone that God has blessed. That was why there could be no enchantment against Jacob; neither could there be any divination against Israel. (Numbers 23:23). Whether he gives tithes and offerings or not, the believer in Christ is blessed. He is blessed, not because of anything he does or will do, but because of what Christ has done.

Mohammed revealed this at the flag-off of the third round of polio outbreak vaccine response in Abuja, while also disclosing that the disease affected 38 people.
“Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community.”

He said the FCT is also doing a lot to vaccinated children in the region.

“We observed that there was an influx of new people from Monguno and Gwoza in Borno state with their children that were previously vaccinated,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki reportedly met again on Friday, November 11 at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Daily Trust reports that it was a close-door meeting and held inside the president’s office. The report said the meeting lasted for about one hour. Crime / Robbers Hold Children Hostage, Lead Mother To Withdraw N90,000 by kelvee(m): 7:20am On Nov 04, 2016
DETECTIVES in Ondo State Police Command have arrested the leader of a three-man armed robbery gang who held a mother of four, Folashade Jayeoba, hostage and led her to the bank to withdraw N90,000.
She was reportedly led to the bank after she complained to the suspects that she had no cash at home.

Education / Poverty To Wealth-the Mind Connection by kelvee(m): 10:41pm On Nov 03, 2016
THE start-up of wealth is in developing a wealth consciousness; whatever you manifest in life hinges on your level of consciousness. This implies that wealth begins from the state of the mind and materializes as the state of life. The start-up of poverty is in possessing a poverty consciousness and it is the poverty consciousness that keeps people perpetually poor and not just the condition of poverty. Therefore, to break free from the condition of poverty, you begin by raising the level of your consciousness.
We live in a universe of infinite possibilities and infinite supply; however, many people have locked themselves and those they influence out of this abundance through selfishness and fear. The good news is that you about to encounter the key to open the door to abundance others may have locked against you or you may have locked against yourself; you are unstoppable because nobody on earth can stop you from exercising the limitless power of the mind.
Herein lies the secret; genuine wealth is not a product of what you struggle for rather it is what you attract because of what you are. In other words, enduring wealth that outlives you is attracted to you because of what you are; life does not give you what you want but what you are.
Whatever you focus your thoughts upon expands and grows into your experience. Hence, when you focus your thoughts on abundance; abundance expands and manifests itself in your experience. When you focus your thoughts on lack; shortage expands and grows as the condition of your life. Every negative thoughts and feeling about money triggers the outflow of abundance from circulating in your life. Every positive thoughts and feeling attracts the inflow of the circulation of abundance in your life.
When you busy your mind with feelings of the need of money you attract into your life more need of money. However, if you focus your mind on abundance knowing that within your subconscious mind lies infinite ideas that could translate into infinite supply of wealth your heart will bask in immense gratitude for this ocean of abundance within you. Remember, money does not flow in a vacuum; money flows through ideas.
A farmer does not go around looking for fruits to consume rather a farmer is aware that if he can get a seed and plant it in a well prepared soil and give it adequate nourishment and care the seed with time will grow into a tree and if these is replicated the farmer will have a forest and he can consume any fruits he wants and at the same time makes money out of it by selling his produce.
It is also important to note that the farmer does not go back to his farm to dig up the seed after planting in order to see if it is growing or not. He has implicit faith that nature will cause to grow whatever is planted in the soil. In other words, he is aware that he cannot play nature’s part and also nature cannot play his part.
It applies, you don’t go around looking for money to spend rather you search inward for an idea that taps into your gift and passion that will help solve a problem in the society. Never try to figure out “how” you are going to accomplish your dreams, when you step out in pursuit of your dreams Life will provide the answers; your business is to hold the outcome of your dream consistently in your mind.
Focus your mind on wealth; think abundance; feel abundance; visualize abundance; talk abundance-say to yourself repeatedly “By day and by night I am prospering in all my ways” and you shall handle abundance if you do not allow limited or negative thoughts to dominate your mind. Remember, you become what you think and you bring to reality what you feel.
Caution: “If there is no enemy within the enemy without can do you no harm”. Life will never deliver to you its vault of valuables when envy lurks within your innermost heart. Being critical and envious of other people’s wealth or progress drags a person deeper into poverty. When you do not feel happy for someone else’s success you cause money to develop wings and fly away from you.
Wealth is attracted and sticks to those who have largeness of heart to accommodate it; those who compliment people rather than compete with people; those who seek to be channels of blessings rather than those who hoard to be reservoirs; those who sees money as a means to an end rather than an end in itself.

Education / Retrogression, Order Of The Day Under Buhari- NANS by kelvee(m): 1:07pm On Nov 03, 2016
*Demands Special Social Academic Intervention for Nigerian students
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to urgently look into the sufferings and agony in the land especially as it concerns Nigerian Students, saying that “since the inception of the present administration headed by President Muhammadu Buhari, if we would be sincere to ourselves, retrogression has been the other of the day.”
In a statement on Thursday, entitled: “The Agony of Nigerian Students and the Mantra of Change,” NANS President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, said that students and parents are struggling to pay their children school fees, some have even deferred semesters or withdrawn from the school because things are not auguring well.
“Any student in school today that has two square meal will be thanking his stars, three square meal is now a story of the past. To be candid to ourselves, the agony of Nigerian students is getting unbearable,” Obasi said.
The statement read: “The pathetic situation of this country has called for a curious but serious concern, why are Nigerian students always at the losing end? This is a question that is eagerly begging for answer from the Nigerian government.
“Since the inception of this present administration headed by President Muhammadu Buhari, if we would be sincere to ourselves, retrogression has been the other of the day. The suffering and agony in the land call for the concern of every Nigerian students because this was not the change we voted for. Change we demanded, not chain.
“In today’s Nigeria, students and parents are struggling to pay their school fees, some have even deferred semesters or withdrawn from the school because things are not auguring well.
“Any student in school today that has two square meal will be thanking his stars, three square meal is now a story of the past. To be candid to ourselves, the agony of Nigerian Students is getting unbearable.
“Lack of better alternative to get oneself financed in school has led many of Nigerian students to engage themselves in all form of atrocities and inimical social vices. In our various campuses, people hide under the slogan of “man must survive” to perpetuate their evil. Robbery and prostitution are now the reigning vogues in our institutions because truly, man needs to survive. Imagine, frustration even made secondary school students burnt down their school building in Oyo State.
“And some of us are product of history, we can remember vividly how the people at the helms of government today were been taken care of in their days in school. They were been fed and their clothes were ironed by third party. They paid no dime and rode on different scholarships, it was little increment in school fees that led to Ali Must Go in late 1970s that almost turned the country upside down. The generation of today’s leaders were not molested, they disavowed cheating but delighted in molesting the able youths and students of today. It is a thing we must give considerable consideration.”
Obasi continued, “We cannot continue to pretend that all is well. All concerned agencies of government should garner and gather themselves to ease the agony of Nigerian Students. We urge the president and his cabinets to make policies that are favorable to Nigerian masses.
“We demand for special social academic intervention for Nigerian students in our institutions to calm down the heightened tension, so that action will not lead to reaction that would be to grave to dismantle. Change we demanded, not chain.”

Sports / World Cup Trophy Sculptor, Gazzaniga Is Dead by kelvee(m): 7:55pm On Oct 31, 2016
Silvio Gazzaniga, creator of the FIFA World Cup™ Trophy, passed away today in his home city of Milan at the age of 95.
“It’s with great sadness that I learned of the death of Silvio Gazzaniga,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said. “He was the creator of a trophy, which is the most beautiful emblem that FIFA could dream of having as a prize. The World Cup is a mythic object for the players and for all football lovers. We will be eternally grateful, I express my condolences by joining the pain of the family.”
After Brazil were allowed to keep the Jules Rimet trophy in 1970 following their third World Cup triumph, a new prize was needed for the most prestigious tournament in global football. FIFA received 53 proposals from seven different countries for a new trophy, before opting for Gazzaniga’s design.
Silvio Gazzaniga
“The lines spring out from the base, rising in spirals, stretching out to receive the world,” said the artist of his work, an 18-carat solid gold trophy weighing approximately six kilograms. “From the remarkable dynamic tensions of the compact body of the sculpture rise the figures of two athletes at the stirring moment of victory.”
The first country to lift the new trophy aloft was Germany FR at the 1974 edition on home soil. As an Italian, Gazzaniga remembered particularly keenly his homeland winning the trophy he had made in 1982: “There were countless people rejoicing in the streets. It looked like they’d gone mad.”
Unlike the Jules Rimet trophy, the original FIFA World Cup Trophy remains permanently in FIFA’s possession, with the winners awarded a replica. “A work of art is a bit like one’s child, as it’s a creation,” said Gazzaniga, who primarily designed medals and trophies as an artist, in an interview once. “And I’m not just talking about the World Cup: the same is true for everything I did.” His legacy will continue to live on for many more years as a prize for the most successful football players on the planet.
