Apple on Monday unveiled its “HomePod” speaker as it moved to challenge Amazon Alexa and Google Home as a smart home and music hub. HomePod, powered Apple’s Siri digital assistant, will be priced at $349 when it begins shipping in December in the United States, Australia and Britain, the tech giant announced at its annual developers conference. “It’s so cool, we really believe it is going to take your home music experience to the next level,” Apple chief executive Tim Cook said of the new device. HomePod will taking Amazon Echo and Google Home, which have been building momentum in the market for voice-controlled speakers capable of controlling smart appliances, fetching content from the internet and more. HomePod is designed to work with the Apple Music subscription service and can produce rich sound while tapping into the artificial intelligence power of Siri. Apple vice president Phil Schiller said the Siri team at Apple had tuned the assistant into a “musicologist” that learns the tastes of listeners and gets songs from the internet cloud. The speaker has the “power to rock the house,” according to Schiller, who said the team worked to make HomePod an potent assistant for news, messages, weather, traffic, home controls and more. HomePod capped a keynote presentation at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference that included updates to its iPad and Mac laptop lines, and upgraded operating software enabling augmented reality for iPhones and iPads Read more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/06/apple-homepod-speaker-take-amazon-google/ |

VANGUARD NEWSA Nigerian newspaper and Online version of the Vanguard, a daily publication in Nigeria covering Niger delta, general national news, politics, business, energy, sports, entertainment, fashion, lifestyle human interest stories, etc Search for: HOMENEWS SPORTSMORE HOME » HEALTH » UNFPA says 300,000 women die annually during pregnancy, childbirth UNFPA says 300,000 women die annually during pregnancy, childbirth ON MAY 6, 20179:31 AMIN HEALTH, NEWSCOMMENTS The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) says more than 300,000 women die annually during pregnancy and childbirth. Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, UNFPA Executive Director, disclosed this at the occasion of International Day of the Midwife, which honoured midwives as family ‘partners for life’. He urged governments and development partners to expand midwifery programmes and promote an environment where midwives can effectively serve the needs of women and their families. “Midwives save lives, support and promote healthy families, and empower women and couples to choose whether, when and how often to have children. “They also help avert sexually transmitted infections and prevent disabilities like obstetric fistula, mother-to-child transmission of HIV and female genital mutilation. “Each year, more than 300,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth. “The UN also estimates that some three million babies do not survive the first month of life, and another 2.5 million are stillborn. “Most of them could have been saved by the care of well-trained midwives within the framework of strong health systems,” Osotimehin said. This year’s theme for the Day is ‘Midwives, Mothers and Families: Partners for Life!’ Osotimehin said the Day underscored the important roles that “these women and girls have in preventing maternal and newborn deaths and empowering women to make informed, healthy choices”. “These are critical aspects of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seek to alleviate poverty and assist the planet, by the 2030 deadline,” the UNFPA chief said. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also reiterated the importance of midwives washing their hands and maintaining hygienic standards. Fran McConville, Midwifery Adviser of WHO, on the occasion of the Midwifery Day, tasked midwives on hygiene, particularly handwashing. McConville said that “handwashing and lack of water and sanitation is a fundamental constraint to quality of care. “As midwives we must work in partnership to improve access to water, sanitation and electricity for all women and babies everywhere. “Worldwide, 30,000 women and 400,000 babies die every year from infections, such as puerperal sepsis, often caused by lack of water, sanitation and poor hand-washing practices,” the WHO official said. OWERRI—Memories of the Nigeria/Biafra war was yesterday, re-enacted in Owerri, as the Consultant to the Federal Ministry of Defence, Professor Bala Jack Yakubu, displayed some deadly weapons manufactured by Biafran engineers. According to Professor Yakubu, “all the weapons were recovered from the war theatres in parts of the South East and South South States and carefully detonated.” Some of the home- made weapons included the multi-barrel ogbunigwe, anti-personnel land mines, improvised explosive devices, Ojukwu anti-mines (made like vehicle hydraulic jack), and anti-tank mines, for trucks, tanks and armoured personnel carriers. Other weapons displayed at the event included long range rocket launcher, anti aircraft missile, bunker cracker launch system, short range round steel ogbunigwe, Ojukwu air launch weapon system (air drop bomb), Ojukwu mortar, Ojukwu bucket and others. Yakubu lamented that the remnants of the weapons used in the various theatres of war, have sadly continued to kill, or permanently maim unsuspecting citizens. “We are showcasing some of the weapons manufactured by Biafran engineers. They caused a lot of harm during the war and today, innocent people are the casualties of these remnants of war”, Yakubu said. While appealing to Nigerians to report any suspicious objects to the nearest security agencies, Yakubu however warned that people in North Eastern States were likely to experience the same thing, when insurgency is finally crushed. Speaking also, Professor Chinedum Adiele, who represented Shedrack Eneogwe, said that it was shameful that the remnants of these dangerous weapons were still killing and maiming people till today. 0 If you or someone you know suffers from sickle cell disease, hope is on the way. Iesha Thomas, who suffered from the disease herself, is the first person to be cured. This is huge!!! Sickle cell affects one in every 500 African Americans in the U.S. But the good news is this disease might be on its way out. Fingers crossed. Iesha Thomas, 33, was living with the disease that progressively got worse. It really wreaked havoc on her life after she gave birth to her daughter, resulting in her needing repeat blood transfusions and two hip replacements due to bone damage. The disease can be extremely painful. What happens is a defect that causes the oxygen-carrying red blood cells to take on a sickle-like appearance. The blood cells deliver less oxygen to the body’s tissues, causing severe pain, stroke, and even organ damage. But a great breakthrough has occurred! Thomas is the first patient in the midwest to be cured of the Sickle Cell Disease. “I just want to be at home with my daughter every day and every night,” said Thomas. Physicians at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Science System performed a procedure using medication to suppress her immune system and a small dose of total body radiation before doing the stem cell transplant. The procedure allows for the patient’s own bone marrow to coexist with that of the donor. The goal of the transplant is for the stem cells to gradually take over the bone marrow’s role in producing normal, and healthy red blood cells. Congrats Iesha. How amazing! We’re rooting for you and all people suffering from sickle cell for complete health and healing. This procedure could really turn things around. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/03/31/chicago-woman-becomes-first-patient-to-be-cured-of-sickle-cell-disease/
