Investment / Re: Advise On Where I Can Invest My Idle Funds? by keneri(m): 11:57am On Apr 17, 2013
All these investment vehicles will only "preserve" your capital in a best case scenario. Inflation, however, will devalue your initial capital outlay. Nigeria's inflation rate is very high and will obliterate whatever interest your investment might accrue. Better put it into business. If you just want capital preservation, then, that's way to go. If you want capital growth/wealth, look elsewhere.

Career / 6 Signs That You've Made It To Middle Class by keneri(m): 12:00pm On Dec 27, 2012
Not so long ago, most people viewed the hallmarks of success as something along the lines of a house, a white picket fence, two weeks vacation, two children and the ability to send those kids to college. Today, the middle class is a vanishing breed according to nearly every survey and statistic on the topic. Despite all of the attention to the subject, defining "middle class" remains a challenge, as everyone wants to be in the middle regardless of their income. Instead of focusing on the Ego/Kudi/Owo/Naira, let's take a look at the lifestyle benchmarks that define middle class status. Have You Made it to the Middle?
A wide variety of numbers have been thrown around in an effort to define the middle. People earning 20% of the average income and people earning 80% all claim to be part of the middle class. More than a few millionaires make the claim too. While there is no official financial standard, the middle class as defined by the government task force is characterized in terms of six financial aspirations, which we can view as benchmarks.

The following are key points to watch out for if you aspire to "belong" to the Middle-Class category.

1. Home Ownership
Home ownership remains the Nigerian dream. The step up from renting to owning signifies prosperity and achievement. With median home prices ranges differing by so much in different cities across Nigeria, the ability to achieve this goal varies significantly by geographical location. Someone earning a decent income (N150k/N500k per mth) in Lagos may not be able to afford even a small house in Abuja.

2. Automobile Ownership
Owning an automobile provides freedom of movement and the luxury of avoiding the limited schedules and cramped quarters offered by mass transportation options such as buses, ferries and trains. Here again, the cost of cars varying widely, as does the kind of automobile required. For one driver, a used Hyundai/Kia will do the trick. For another, a new BMW signifies the achievement of this goal.

3. A University Education for the Kids
Helping children get ahead in life is a primary goal for middle class families. Paying for a university/college education for children can cost anywhere from the low tens of thousands of Naira to hundreds of thousands (especially in our so-called "church universities"wink. Decisions about which university or college to attend can have a significant impact on the price tag.

4. Retirement Security
Retirement is a goal nearly everyone wants to achieve. It demonstrates success and provides a reward for decades of hard work. Once again, definitions make a difference. The amount of gold required to support your golden years will vary significantly depending on whether you want a staff of 10 at your villa in the South of France or an exquisite mansion in Banana Island, Lagos.

5. Health Care Coverage
The ability to obtain healthcare is an important goal for middle class wager earners and their families. The high and rising cost of medical care and prescription drugs make healthcare coverage an ever-increasing need, as going without it can have serious negative financial implications in the event of a severe illness or injury. If you can't afford the costs for a critical surgery (heart, kidney, transplants etc) in any of our premium Nigerian private hospitals or elsewhere like India, U.S, Dubai, you aren't yet a "middle-classer".

6. Family Vacation
The family vacation is a middle class staple. Vacations demonstrate that a family has disposable income and has been successful enough to take time away from work to focus on leisure. If you can't afford to take your family to neighboring Ghana on a vacation, you never start. Work harder!

Your journey to the Middle-Class starts with just A STEP. Start today!

Health / Re: Please Beware Of That Bottle Of "Alomo Bitters" You Are About Drinking !!!!!! by keneri(m): 9:40am On Nov 28, 2012
ouigy99: Alomo bitters is undoubtedly one of the fastest selling brands in Naija. Some claim it cleanses the system, some say it is an "enhancer", while a number of people like me only drink it because it is a cheap way of getting high. My story begins this past Saturday night. I was just scrolling through my phone to see which of my friends i would be scamming for the weekend. I came upon a phone contact of a friend of mine who i knew loved car racing games (i had the recent "need for speed most wanted 2012), so i just called him and said ... "Mr man, i can get you the latest need for speed, all i would need in return is 2 bottles of small alomo and 2k suya from yahuza..... and just as i expected, my guy accepted the deal.

I was at his place by 4pm on sunday and before i entered his house, i told him to show me the alomo and suya (while i was still outside)cus i no really trust anyone. He showed me the alomo and suya, i collected the package and i went inside. I drank 1 alomo with a bottle of sprite and i offered him the second alomo, but he told me he was not really feeling fine and didn't feel like drinking. I just drank the 1 bottle and went home happy cus i scammed the guy (i would have given him the game free of charge, but wanted to just test my luck).

Woke up on monday morning and went to work. Around 10 am, i noticed i was feeling feverish, i had to put the A.C off, but i was still shaking. Next thing, one kind head ache start, mywhole body was heavy and i had to be going to the toilet to pee every 3 mins. At first i thought it was because of the change in weather, but it kept getting worse. By 2pm, i couldn't see well again and as a typical Nigerian, i started suspecting i had been poisoned or jazzed.

Am not the type that likes taking drugs so i just lay in the office and started asking for forgiveness for all my sins (in case i died), that was when i started overhearing some other colleagues discussions. One of them drank alomo over the weekend and threw up for almost 6 hours. The other also said he watched on news where they raided a fake alomo manufacturing lab in Lugbe (Abuja). I then called my friend and asked him what was the last thing he did before falling sick ..... he said he drank alomo with some friends.

It was then i knew that it was the alomo i drank that was messing my system up. I rushed home and drank a cup of palm oil (proven to counter poisoning), and licked 2 oranges. All i did all through the night was sweat and piss. E be like say i piss reach 200 times sef. I finally got relieved this morning and i am getting stronger.

The bottom line here is that people have found out that alomo is a great market mover. Instead of buying 2 bigstout, people would prefer dring one alomo and any soft dring of their choice. It is far cheaper and you would steal get the same high level (if not more). Because of the rush for the product, some people have started faking it, and these fake ones are poisonous. I drank only one bottle and i almost died, what if i had drank the second? I also learnt that they fake the small bottles the most. Also look out for where you buy anything you drink (be it alomo or soft drink) because there are so many fake stuffs out there. I also feel that people caught faking products (food, drink or drugs) should be executed, because many souls must have gone by taking such fake products.

I would also appreciate if you could also share some of your experiences.

People have to be careful with all these swedish bitters and especially the locally made alomo bitters(easily counterfeited). When taken in excess could cause irreparable damage to the kidneys and liver as they contain strong diuretic properties. If you want to be "high", please take alcohol, also in moderation (not dry gin). Be warned.

berem: Anytime I want to change dollars,I always go to this paricular bereau de change located at Allen Avenue to get the naira equivalent.Unluckily for me,last week wednesday, someone gave me 200 dollars and I decided to go change it at the same place.

Instead of me to change the money at my usual place,I decided to change it with a guy I met at the road side.the guy told me its 157naira to a dollar.I told him 160naira which he agreed.after giving me 32000naira,I counted it twice and they too counted it.

I gave them the 200 dollars and left.just few steps away,I noticed the money was not bulky anymore.it was in 1000notes anyway.I felt something was wrong.I stopped and recounted the money only to find out that the money was in deficit! I was left with 20000naira.

I screamed and when I turned back,I couldn't find the swindlers.they were gone! I went back and asked the traders around that place if they saw the guy and his friend, they said they didn't.a security man I met there told me they are swindlers and that is how they swindle people who come to change dollars.I was furious!

The security guy told me to get a policeman to help me out.Police ke? Long process, writing statement,I felt it won't be necessary.I just left and forgot about it.

I don't know if there are other people who also have witnessed such incident, but people should beware of changing hard currency especially with men who walk along the road on allen avenue.

They are SWINDLERS! They hurriedly meet you with calculator and ask if you wanna change money.please ignore them!

My dear Berem you are not alone on this matter. I had exactly the same experience at that SAME location on Allen, close to Allen roundabout. I went to my bank GTB to change some money, about 200 pounds. I was told to go and do such outside. So I went to some guy standing outside. After changing the money, i counted it, it was about 30k. Deep within me, I suspected the money will disappear, so I held it firmly in my hands and started walking very fast to deposit it with GTB on Allen, as I was approaching the bank security door, the money bundle suddenly became thin. As at the time I recounted it to make the deposit, I saw only 17k. The ugly experience is very REAL. Since then, I now change my money at designated Bureau de Exchange offices.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

afam4eva,

There is no escape route when an airplane is about to crash. Are you trained to skydive or deploy an imaginary parachute before embarking on a flight? By the way, you wont even know a plane is about to crash unless there is an explosion coupled wit a smoke filled cabin or been tossed about. lol
Travel / Re: by keneri(m): 1:49pm On Nov 02, 2012
manny4life:

Parachute? Are you serious? from what level will you be jumping from 35,000 ft? Airplanes become pressurized at a certain flight level, the moment a hatch is opened to let passengers off the plane, say at FL300, it automatically depressurizes the plane. Did I forget to tell you that passengers will pass out due to lack of oxygen by the time they're reaching the ground surface. So even an aircraft aggressively descending at dangerous speeds of almost 5000ft/m, will need abt 7mins to reach the ground. 5mins without oxygen is enough to kill you...So it's not possible.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I agree with you. Parachutes on planes are useless. At 10,000ft, the air becomes thin and lack oxygen. So when a passenger jumps off, he likely dies of asphyxiation (lack of oxygen)under 60secs. So whats the need to jump out of an airplane at say 30,000ft? Pilots will never inform passengers of an impending doom until it happens to avoid unnecessary panic or stampede. They try all they can to save an aircraft until it eventually gets saved or doomed.

chaircover: I have a couple of questions for the pilots in the house. I hate flying so the more I know about how things work up there, should hopefully help kill this fear embarassed

If anyone has further questions feel free to ask too.

1.What causes turbulence and do some routes suffer more than others? It seems to me that the Abuja-London route suffers more turbulence than the London-Lagos route.

2.Do some airlines absorb the turbulence better? From my experience Virgin doesn’t seem to be as bumpy as ARIK and BA

3.Why do your ears pop on some flights and not on others?

4.Why does the plane dramatically slow down when the Wheels come out for landing

5.And why does it make such a loud thud/bang when the wheels come out. I thought it was to do with hydraulics so why is it so noisy?

6.What maintenance do the ground engineers do when the plane comes in and before take off again

7.How many trips does a plane make say for example London to Lagos before it is taken out of service?

8.What is the average pay for a pilot and crew?

9.Do pilots sleep when the plane is on autopilot? And do the number of pilots increase with the lenght of the flight so eg are there more pilots on the UK-Australia route than there would be on the london-lagos route?

10.Do mobile phones really affect electronics on the flight?

11.When the plane comes to land how do the back wheels drop down so gently without slamming into the runway considering the weight of the plane?

12.When a flight departs late, most times the pilots try and make up time. If the plane therefore can safely travel that fast, then why not just use that speed anyway and reduce the flight times of all flights?

13.Why do the crew insist on switching the cabin lights off when departing or landing at night/its dark?

14.Why are suitcases sometimes damp when they come out of the hold?

15.Is it me or does anyone else suddenly notice the increase in heat in the cabin during day flights over the desert?

16.I know that the engines “drive” the planes, but how does the plane go up in the air and not down at ground level like a car or boat will?

. . . . . . . And last of all why is airline food sooooooo crap? shocked

And before the smart alecs ask me to ask google. I have and not all the answers are there tongue grin

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Well, I have a lot of pilots as friends here in UAE. They mostly fly planes operated by Ethihad and Emirates and believe me, I have asked most of your questions. I dread flying as well. Hope this helps.

1. Turbulence is natural. Planes are automatically suited to handle such. The plane automatically adjusts its thrust, altitude and buoyancy depending on the type of turbulence as caused by thunderstorms, clouds, etc. Some planes, depending on the model will handle turbulence better than others. From my experience, turbulence occurs more at night than during the day.

2. Ear popping has to do with pressurization/depressurization of cabins as planes attempts to alter its altitude.

3. Remember planes fly themselves and as such everything happens automatically, which means when a plane is making an approach and the wheels come out, its only natural that the plane must adjust its speed and engine thrust accordingly.

4&5. Believe me, the wheels are very huge and will definitely make some noise when it puts out, hydraulics or not. Save for routine maintenance, ground engineers don't really do much except if there are concerns as noted by the pilot in his in-flight log book. Most times, the pilot just takes a trip around his aircraft to make such there aren't any open spaces or cracks especially at the door seals and baggage compartment to avoid sudden cabin De-pressurization during flight.
6&7. skip
8. Here in the UAE, Captains of Etihad and Emirates earn between DHs60,000-80,000(N3.2m)monthly. First officers earn btw Dhs25,000- DHs 35,000 monthly. This is exclusive of extra hourly flight bonuses.

9. Depending on the route, long-haul routes can have a captain, first and second officers and or aircraft engineer on board. Captains do take some time off to relax and chat up the cabin crew. At no time will all the pilots leave the instrumentation panel simply because its on auto-pilot. When an air plane hits a severe turbulence or when the pitot tubes start sending wrong airspeed due to freezing, the autopilot most likely disengages. If the pilot is asleep, then disaster is the word. Some can even "chyke" a pretty lady. Ofcourse pilots are hot commodities...lol

10. Electronic devices especially when emitting radio signals will most certainly interfere with communications with the airport tower. So landing and take is very critical for the airplane's radio signals.

11. Hydraulics which controls the landing gear is responsible.

12. Yes pilots can speed up the plane to meet up. However, a combination of factors are responsible in determining how fast a plane can travel e.g air speed, atmospheric pressure, turbulence, to mention a few.

13. skip

14. The air within the cabin is pressurized and thus dry. Your suitcase is inside a compartment apparently saved from the dry air within the cabin. The difference between the air within the cabin and the compartment thus leaves the suitcase slightly moist.

15. skip

16. skip

17. Airplanes are not gourmet restaurants. If you want to eat great food. Visit those restaurants. grin

In Abuja, when abacha was in power, the city was spectacularly clean and orderly upon his demise, a gradual degradation crept in. For Nigeria to really experience a shift from it's present eye sore, a radical, stern and unrelenting methodology must be enacted. Oshiomole and fashola perfectly understands the Nigerian people and how best to reinstate their insanity (figuratively). Anyone having problems or opposing these radical change is stucked with the conveniences of the disorderly, disjointed, disfigured and destabilized Nigeria hence the defensive approach to anything referred to as change. Change is hard, difficult and a painful sacrifice not some cup-cake experience. Hate it or love it I have said my mind oooo.

Was it to provide affordable education to church members? was is to provide quality education (only to those that can afford it)? Was it for profit? If it was clear from the very beginning that it was going to be for those that can afford it, you don't blame the church.

Mister man, don't take sides blindly. The church should have communicated its OBJECTIVES from the outset so that its members can make informed choices. Every business concern does this so that every intending investor can decide if the company's business objectives properly aligns with that of the investors. The churches shouldn't be an exception. I believe the churches deceived their members by communication false objectives across to them. If not, how can you explain why the members sheepishly contributed their all "widows might" only to be brutally disappointed after the so-called "church universities" were built.

With such "unattractive" salaries, our politics will start diverging from its current "do or die" and rigging trajectory to one of selflessness and transparency. Individuals and corporations that earn more than N100m should be taxed at 40-50%.

Eko Atlantic: Not a bad idea. Plus it'll also be a smart move if they'll scrap one of those two chambers of the law makers.
May be instead of removing subsidy on petrol, it would have been more reasonable to reduce the amount spent in running of agencies and the senate.
Make the presidency seat, House of Rep, a no profit making post, cut the allowances by 50%, make the rich pay more tax, subsidize education, transportation and agriculture for the poor. Then we'll know they have the people they're governing in mind.

Its really a worrisome and sad situation in Imo state. Last year, I was a victim to highway robbers at night when I left Owerri for Orsu LGA. Over 10 Armed bandits capitalized on an abandoned police checkpoint to rob us. I was very lucky I was not shot nor my wife raped, maybe because they got alot of money and expensive items from us. But other people that came after us weren't so lucky. A guy that was just coming from his Traditional wedding had his "new" wife raped that night. Another bus carrying loads of women from a ceremony were also brutally raped. We remained far deep into the bush for 4 hrs until a police patrol team came to the spot around 3am. I shudder to my spine each time I remember that last year incident. I am mortally scared of living in Nigeria honestly.

Nigeria's Balance of Trade as of September 2012

Nigeria reported a trade surplus equivalent to 10.5 Billion USD in March of 2012. Historically, from 2002 until 2012, Nigeria Balance of Trade averaged 2.69 Billion USD reaching an all time high of 14.59 Billion USD in October of 2011 and a record low of -3.82 Billion USD in March of 2011. Exports of commodities (oil and natural gas) is the main factor behind Nigeria's growth and accounts for more than 95% of total exports. Nigeria's main exports partners are: USA (30% of total in 2009), Equatorial Guinea (8%), Brazil (6.6%), France (6%) and India (6%). Nigeria imports mainly: industrial supplies (32% of total), transport equipment and parts (23%), capital goods (24%), food and beverage (11%) and consumer goods. Main import partners are: China (17% of total), Albania (11.3%), United States (7.5%), France and Belgium. This page includes a chart with historical data for Nigeria Balance of Trade.

Nigeria isn't doing badly. Are we?

Balance of Trade Definition

The balance of trade is the difference between the monetary value of exports and imports in an economy over a certain period of time. A positive balance of trade is known as a trade surplus and consists of exporting more than is imported; a negative balance of trade is known as a trade deficit or, informally, a trade gap. The balance of trade forms part of the current account, which also includes other transactions such as income from the international investment position as well as international aid. If the current account is in surplus, the country's net international asset position increases correspondingly. Equally, a deficit decreases the net international asset position. The Balance of Trade is identical to the difference between a country's output and its domestic demand - the difference between what goods a country produces and how many goods it buys from abroad; this does not include money respent on foreign stocks, nor does it factor the concept of importing goods to produce for the domestic market.

Very well explained T22. Indeed one cannot overemphasize the need for internships. I am a typical example. When I finished my MBA (Information Systems & Finance) in Australia, found it hard to beat other applicants for plum investment banking jobs at the world's global financial powerhouses despite being close to what you can call genius. Those that were previous interns were favored more. The exams T22 listed are very key especially the CFA, FRM, ICAN & ACCA. For the guy who studied mathematics, all I can say is that you have Gold in your hands only if you know how to use it. Becoming a Quant[quantitative trader] will be the way to go. Most of the algorithmic/quant designers in big banking institutions have advanced degrees[PhD] in Mathematics, Statistics, Financial engineering and Quantum Physics. You must work very hard too. Investment Banking isn't for the lousy. Wishing you the best.
tanimola22:

Hi,

I assume you are in Naija, although these hints can work anywhere in the world, especially in North America.

First, do your best to graduate at the very top of your class. This is especially possible if you are currently in your second year of studies or below.
Second, apply for an internship at any of the investment houses in Lagos. These investment houses periodically accept interns, and the good thing is that you can do your internship with any of them during the short and long holidays of your 4 years of university education, thereby raking in approximately 2 years of solid work experience even before graduating from the university. This is great! It is great because experience is always KEY, any day, anytime and anywhere in the world. More experience is a good thing because employers won’t have to spend thousands or millions training you. Just like many ladies, employers want prospective employees who are ready made. That is why you see job adverts quoting ‘we want a minimum of 3 years work experience in this and that’.

To be specific, there are many investment houses that like to hear from undergraduates who are keen on building a future career in securities analysis, equity research, asset management, investment banking and so on. ARM is one of them. Afrinvest is one of them. CardinalStone Partners are one of them too. There are many others. Go to their websites and apply to be considered for Easter and summer and December internship positions. I am almost certain that they will invite you to sit aptitude tests.

Immediately after your NYSC, start applying to any and every boutique investment house in Lagos. You may not even need to do this because the firm where you interned would have made you a full time offer if you were indispensable while with them. The internship experience will always help you beat most people your age during job competitions. You will find that almost all fresh graduates you are competing with will be clueless and will therefore have no other choice than to view you as one genius. Don’t toil with this counsel. Try the strategy and enjoy the positive amazement that comes with it.

For professional exams, the most respected ones in Asset Management/Investment Banking/ Brokerage etc in Naija are CFA, CIAI, and CIS. ICAN, ACCA, FRM, ERP and others are also good. However, they are not directly linked to a career in investment management/banking. Even the CFA is not that required for a career in investment banking, though it should help you if your aim is to build a career in buyside/sell side investment management. Depending on how much you have in your pocket, you may try one of CFA/CIS/CIAI immediately after graduating or during your NYSC.

Deenee will hopefully answer your question on Private Equity. Hope he finds time to read your post and respond.

Health / Re: US Approves Once-a-day HIV Pill by keneri(m): 5:00pm On Aug 29, 2012
nwa-ngeme:
as if there was a killer disease called HIV...It has been a scam from the beginning.Infact the biggest scam ever known to mankind. The doctors made billions of dollars from the drugs they approved for the treatment (Anti Retroviral Drugs) .Its a simple logic, a pack of high profile doctors conspires to tell the world that HIV exists. These same doctors come out with costly drugs for its treatment. I have never been scared of HIV just scared of other STDs that are really terminal like Herpes.

My dear friend, Herpes is NOT terminal. Its just another kind of oral/sexually transmitted virus. There are two major types, Oral (mouth) and on the reproductive organs. Do your research before running into conclusions. Herpes has no "cure" per sey and can lie dormiant in the system for years until when activated by sickness etc. And pls and Pls HIV/AIDS isn't a conspiracy, it kills both whites and blacks alike. check this out for more info: http://www.cdc.gov/std/herpes/stdfact-herpes.htm

Politics / Re: KOGI UNDER SIEGE: Four Killed In Fresh Attack On Mosque by keneri(m): 9:29am On Aug 08, 2012
teminoni: There have been reported threats on mosques, including shootings and bombings, but I have not heard of any casualties what so ever. The muslim worshipers are always saved by one mysterious obstacle or 'premature' explosion before getting to the mosque.

What I'm trying to say is churches are attacked and there are dead worshipers. Mosques are attacked but there is never a single dead worshiper.

I think this is just a tactic by boko haram to make us think mosques are being attacked by christians so they have the right to attack more churches. Or they are trying to cause confusion and thus, a religious war.

Plz I stand to be corrected if wrong.

You are absolutely correct. They {Boko Haram} use pseudo-attacks on mosques as a smokescreen to make us believe they also attack muslims which is a blatant deceit of the highest order. Until xtians start attending churches with AK47s, hand grenades, rocket launchers and also execute unequal retaliatory attacks, these madness will not stop.

Travel / Re: Why Is UK So Expensive??? by keneri(m): 4:20pm On Jul 29, 2012
Billyonaire: The answer is simply in the economics text books. The law of demand and supply. So many people chose to go to UK for schooling, shopping, tourism etc. And since the government depends on taxation which is added to the rents and other products/services price regimes, the multiplier effect is what you feel daily in the UK, little wonder people living in UK almost always come home with little or nothing to show for it than a rented accent.

@billyonaire....rented accent indeed...UK isn't the most expensive as other N'Landers have pointed out. Having lived in Australia, Hong-Kong, Sweden, and now paying an equivalent of N450k monthly for my 2-bedroom flat in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Your guess is as good. United Arab Emirates (Dubai & Abu Dhabi) have one of the costliest apartments in the world.
