BusinessDangote Cement, BUA, IBETO Other Stakeholders Have Been Given A 14-day Ultimatum by kenny160(op): 4:50pm On May 07, 2024
This followed the failure of the companies and others to appear at its investigative hearing on Tuesday.

The joint committee, consisting of the House committees on solid minerals, Commerce, Industry and Special Duties, was set up by the House to ‘investigate the arbitrary increase in the price of cement In Nigeria by cement manufacturers’.

The House also summoned the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, to appear before the committee after failing to appear on Tuesday.

It ordered that the minister should appear Tuesday, May 21 while Dangote, BUA, IBETO and others are to appear on Monday, May 20, 2024.
Chairman of the joint Committee who is also the Chairman, Committee on Solid Minerals, Rep. Jonathan Gaza Gefwi, berated the companies for shunning the invitation, said their actions was a pointer to their insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians.

In his opening remark earlier, Rep. Gefwi said that, a review of cement prices in other countries like Kenya, India and Zambia for 2021 alone showed that Nigeria had the highest price of cement using the official exchange rates for each country.

He said, “Nigeria’s price of cement doubles that of India at a difference of 69%, similarily the price is 29% higher than that in Kenya and 39% higher in Zambia. Hence the need for us to come together and find out why. In order to bring succour to our citizens while protecting investors alike.

“Our concern is for all legitimate businesses especially cement production companies in Nigeria to thrive and deliver their objective and services to the people in such a manner that can foster development”.

The joint committee chairman further emphasized on the importance of the public hearing and the need to de-emphasize the notion created by some companies relevant to the investigation that committees of parliament had no powers to invite private outfits.

He added, “It is on record that there is no Order of the Courts presented restraining the committee from exercising its functions under section 88(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution as Ammended.

“The committees of parliament have always set-up public hearings to extract evidence from the public to guide it in taking decisions on matters that have direct bearing on the citizens such as this.

“However, an entity recognised as private under the Law, does not oust in entirety the Powers of the Committee to investigate its affairs especially when the attainment of the objectives of said entity heavily relies on the Resources of the populace.

“Let me also reiterate the objectives of the Legislative Powers and Privilges Act sections 4,5,6 and 7 on the Powers of committees to invite, investigate and summon any person for the purpose of extracting evidence on any matter, whether its public or private. Most especially when the matter affects the citizens and the people for which they represent”.

In his remark, the Chairman, House Committee on Commerce, Rep. Ahmed Munir said that, failure of any entity invited by the committee to appear before the joint committee would give credence to the allegations that, the rise in the price of cement was an act of arbitrarines to unnecessary subject Nigerians to hardship and undermine government’s efforts to close the housing deficit in the country.

PoliticsNigerian Government Officials Demanded Over N207billion Bribe Against Binance by kenny160(op): 4:34pm On May 07, 2024
Binance, Tigran Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen and head of financial crime and Nadeem Anjarwalla, a British Kenyan, are facing trial for laundering more than $35 million.

Aglobal cryptocurrency trading platform, Binance Holdings Ltd has disclosed that Nigerian authorities demanded a large amount of money as a bribe to make the money laundering trial initiated against two of its executives go away.

Binance, Tigran Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen and head of financial crime and Nadeem Anjarwalla, a British Kenyan, are facing trial for laundering more than $35 million.

The suit was filed by Nigeria's anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bloomberg reports that Binance Chief Executive Officer Richard Teng made the claim in a blog on Monday, detailing how the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange tried to engage with Nigerian authorities, including having a meeting which was held in Abuja on January 8, 2024.

As our employees were leaving the venue, they were approached by unknown persons who suggested to them to make a payment in settlement of the allegations,” Teng wrote.

After that incident, Binance’s lawyer was “presented with a demand for a significant payment in cryptocurrency to be paid in secret within 48 hours to make these issues go away,” Teng wrote.

The amount in question was $150 million (N207,304,500,000), the New York Times reported separately, without revealing the identities of those involved.

Nigeria, which blames crypto speculators for some of the naira’s depreciation against the US dollar, denied this allegation.

“Investigators are confident that the sequence of events is not as Binance has indicated, nor the material facts,” said Zakari Mijinyawa, spokesman for Nigeria’s National Security Adviser.

“It will of course be for the courts to decide, and for due process to be followed and justice delivered,” he added.

The incident marks the latest legal problems for Binance, whose founder Changpeng Zhao was ordered on May 1 to spend four months in prison in the US for failures that allowed cybercriminals and terrorist groups to freely trade on its platform. Binance in November agreed to pay $4.3 billion to resolve the US allegations.

In Nigeria, the confrontation led to the arrest of two of its staff after they returned in late February for further talks. One of them fled, but Tigran Gambaryan has been jailed at the Kuje correctional centre in Abuja and will go on trial this month to face charges of tax evasion, currency speculation and money laundering.

Teng said Gambaryan and his colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla, who later escaped from custody, were given repeated assurances they would be granted safe passage.

“To invite a company’s mid-level employees for collaborative policy meetings, only to detain them, has set a dangerous new precedent for all companies worldwide,” he said.

PoliticsCBN Clarifies Education, Petroleum Tax For Cash Pooling Settlement by kenny160(op): 4:14pm On May 07, 2024
The Central Bank of Nigeria has provided additional clarifications on the circular concerning the cash pooling of repatriated oil and gas export proceeds by international oil companies.

The apex bank specified the expenses that can be settled from 50 per cent of the repatriated fund, which includes petroleum tax, royalty, domestic contractor invoices, cash calls, domestic loan payments, interest payments, education tax, transaction tax, and forex sales in the Nigerian foreign exchange market.

This announcement comes as a response to the queries raised by banks and other stakeholders regarding the previous circular in February.

This announcement was made through a circular with reference number TED/FEM/PUB/FPC/001/004 uploaded to its website and signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department Dr Hassan Mahmud on Tuesday.

The statement read, “Following recent inquiries by banks and other stakeholders on our circular referenced TED/FEM/PUB/FPC/001/004, in respect of Cash Pooling requests by banks on behalf of IOCs, we provide further clarifications as:

“The initial 50% of the repatriated proceeds can be pooled immediately or as when required. Banks may submit the request for cash pooling ahead of the expected date of receipt, supported by the required documentation, for approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

“The 50% balance of the repatriated export proceeds could be used to settle financial obligations in Nigeria, whenever required, during the prescribed 90-day period.

PoliticsSERAP Gives FG 48-hr Ultimatum To Reverse Cbn’s 0.5% Cybersecurity Levy by kenny160(op): 2:10pm On May 07, 2024
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has issued a warning to the Federal Government to reverse the 0.5 per cent cybersecurity levy imposed by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

SERAP also threatened to deal in legal action against the government if it failed to reverse the levy within a 48-hour timeframe.

The non-governmental organisation stated this Tuesday via its Twitter handle, calling for the immediate reversal of what it regarded as levy ‘imposition’.

SERAP tweep @SERAPNigeria stated, “The Tinubu administration must immediately withdraw the grossly unlawful CBN directive to implement section 44 of the Cybercrime Act 2024, which imposes a 0.5% ‘cybersecurity levy’ on Nigerians.

“We’ll see in court if the directive is not withdrawn within 48 hours.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria has ordered banks operating in the country to start charging a cybersecurity levy on transactions.

A circular from the apex bank seen by Punch Online on Monday disclosed that the implementation of the levy would start two weeks from then.

The circular was directed to all commercial, merchant, non-interest and payment service banks, among others.

The circular revealed that it was a follow-up on an earlier letter dated June 25, 2018 (Ref: BPS/DIR/GEN/CIR/05/008) and October 5, 2018 (Ref: BSD/DIR/GEN/LAB/11/023), respectively, on compliance with the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act 2015.

I am not condemning you bro. A man who views issues using his own instincts alone without listening to others might miss out. I am trying to tap into your wisdom. Don't look at me like hey....layers are cool, native na wash...Nope. There must be something in this thing that is making you go for it. And I want to learn

If you can sell it for 6k upwards, that's a good deal. Please bro...I just want to learn and I might ask strange questions. Just pardon me. A beg. I get more excited that you can sell at N6k upward. Not bad at all.

I know you said people don't like broilers, and I disagreed previous. But after checking it out again, I think I have heard such too...and I won't dispute it further. However, there is something to unravel.

Just pardon me. Let's say someone gives you the contract to sell broilers of 3kg along with your native chicken, do you see a way out? How much would you propose to sell 1 broiler? Sure, you aren't producing the broilers, but you will pick then up and just sell in addition to your native birds.

To be honest, which will move more? What about quail birds? What do you think?

@marhoinspire... abeg, no VEX bro. I am just trying to see another view and style of chicken business. Personally, I am thrilled that you guys can sell native chickens. I produce quail birds for personal consumption and I have not thought of how to sell the birds or the eggs....but when I saw this thread.....my heart goes to quail, noilers, kuroilers, native chickens, etc. There may be gold there. This is why I am trying to figure out how you guys are doing it. Marketing and Sales are two areas that interest me so much.
you have valid points my brother, I was once like @newoffer and @marhoinspire cause I have been rearing local chicken since age of 12years old I have a lot of secret of the business too but I am planing of going into layers too just like you but I was thinking how to feed them coupled with no space as I am no more home but now I got some points from your comment which give me hope and open my eyes ways to start.

You may not understand the culture of her hometown than her.

What you just describe as 'nkuchi' is also practice in Yoruba culture, the only difference is that it is the husband's family headed by the Family's Patriach that hand-over the widow to her late Husband's brother, cousin or any close relative to 'so lo po' meaning to re-marry her, raised children in the name of her deceased husband or take care of the widow and her young kids. Other family members are also expected to assist the woman by occasional gifts of farm produce and some may offer to take one of the kids to live with them. The Practice is however fading now due to westernization/ Pentecostal christianity.
thanks for the clarification at the end of your comment coz I want to say, you didn't mentioned it that it is no more in existence but you later mentioned it before those omo ale will start abusing the yoruba culture.

Come my dear brother you too think am now, no one said Eastener should not be there but first you people need to make peace with everybody coz no one have control over your candidate's failure, always trust in Destiny and God if God want something to be weither you like it or not it will surely be and mind you dnt pray that any of our leader should fail coz if you curse them coz you wish someone from your tribe should win and he loss, you are aswel curaing yourself coz the matter is like someone in public bus raising curse on driver to have accident. PoliticsAdeleke Moves Into Osun Government House 16 Months After Swearing-In by kenny160(op): 8:15am On Mar 18, 2024
About one year and four months after taking over rein of the state, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has moved into the Okefia Government House, Osogbo, the official residence of the governor.

Adeleke was sworn in on Sunday, November 27, 2022, and rather than moving into the Government House to live like his predecessors, he chose to return to his private house in Ede, a neigbouring town to Osogbo.

Despite criticisms by the opposition All Progressives Congress, Adeleke remained in his private house and sometimes conducted the business of the state from there.

He explained that the Government House was under renovation.

However, a statement on Sunday by his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, said the renovation had been completed and Adeleke had finally moved in.

Rasheed explained that the rehabilitation work covered the main house, the completion of an abandoned multi-bedroom guest house, remodelling of many of the structures, and refixing of many derelict facilities.

Speaking at the unveiling of the renovated Government House, an event attended by top officials of the Osun State Government, Adeleke said his administration was committed to upgrading state assets irrespective of whether such programmes were inherited or commenced by him.

He said, “I have upgraded the Government House just as I rehabilitated the Governor’s Office. We ensured the Government House was rescued from the open neglect we inherited. You can all see the upgraded facilities which now place our state in good stead in the comity of states.

“I met an abandoned guest house where top dignitaries can be hosted instead of huge bills on outside accommodation. I ordered its rehabilitation and today it is completed.

“The Presidential Lodge I met on the ground was in a terrible state. Our team fixed it.

“Our administration is passionate about upgrading state assets because they are for generations even yet unborn. We must act genuinely on the mantra that government is a continuum. Abandoning projects or state assets as Osun witnessed in the recent past is a sign of bad leadership.”

Adeleke said his government was not only completing inherited projects but was also initiating new ones.

“To the good people of Osun State, your governor has moved into the Government House. I pledge to redouble our efforts at delivering on the five-point agenda. We are truly fixated on sustaining the delivery of good governance,” he said.

But reacting, Osun APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, described the renovated Government House as a misplaced priority.

Lawal, in a statement, said, “It is a pity that while the counterparts of Governor Adeleke in other states are preoccupied with how to lessen the debilitating effects of the Federal Government removal of fuel subsidy through palliatives, the Osun State governor was busy celebrating something that cannot positively impact the people of the state.

“We want to impress it on Governor Adeleke and his co-travellers that we, just like other discerning members of the public in Osun State, are not amused by the Adeleke N1bn rehabilitated Government House which had already been rehabilitated to taste by the immediate-past Governor Gboyega Oyetola now Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.”
