Career / Re: Employers Risk One-month Imprisonment For Late Payment Of Salaries by Kennyquestt: 1:33pm On Sep 28, 2022
IamDietiesGod:
House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill to prohibit late payment of salaries, underpayment of wages, pension and other emoluments in Nigeria.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila was passed for second reading on Tuesday following the debate on the general principle of the bill..

The bill seeks to prohibit employees from owing salaries and other emoluments. The bill is prescribing punishment for such employers. For instance, owing salaries above 60days, such an employer risks 30 days imprisonment.

Section 2 of the bill provides that “Every employer of labour in Nigeria, whether private or public, and whether it is employing any worker on permanent or contract basis must ensure that all payment of wages, salaries, pension and all benefits to workers are paid promptly without delay weekly, fortnightly monthly, quarterly or yearly as may be agreed by parties in the contract of employment of the additional individuals”

In addition, the bill prohibits arbitrary and harsh deduction as punishment in the event of damages and negligence by an employee.

Section 3(1) says “an employer is prohibited from entering into any contract with any workman for any deduction from the sum contracted to be paid by the employer to the workman, or any payment to the employer by the workman for in respect of bad negligent work or injury to the material or property of the employer or in respect of any fine.”

The bill was referred to the committee of the whole as it was not debated.

Car Talk / Request Honest Opinion On Hyundai Cars. by Kennyquestt: 12:29am On Sep 11, 2022
I am soliciting for Honest opinion on Hyundai Cars in Nigeria.
I had wanted to buy a Hyundai Elantra (2011 - 2014) model but I made some reviews that got me scared, I read a lot of complains about engine problems, engine tick/piston slap which could lead to engine knock.
Though a lot of reviews stated that the problem is common on very cold days leading to the car having a cold start.
There are other problems associated with this generation of Elantra but this is the most worrisome. However what amazes me is that I keep seeing more and more of these elantras daily in different Nigeria cities, so I wonder, is this Elantra known problems not affecting elantras used in Nigeria?
I am now considering Hyundai Accent (2011-2014) model, though I have not come across a worrisome review on Hyundai accent.
I would appreciate if people using these types of Hyundai (Elantra or Accent) could help me with honest opinion about these cars especially its use in Nigeria, how easy is it for the cars to develop problems, are there mechanics for these cars, are there readily available spare parts, maintenance cost, durability and so on.
Thanking you for your anticipated opinion.

Career / Re: Academic Advice; as an HND graduate what next? PGD or BSC by Kennyquestt: 2:38pm On May 30, 2022
Pearl1212:
I'm confused.
I'm 23years of age, I have HND in statistics (Distinction), done with NYSC program, I want to further my studies but I'm really confused what to do,

1. I don't know whether to opt in for PGD or BSC(Through Direct Entry).

2. I don't know if I should switch course, from statistics to accounting via Direct Entry and I don't know if HND statistics will be accepted into accounting.
Please I seriously need your opinion and advise on it.

Going for a PGD or Bsc after your HND is not a bad idea, but what do you want to achieve with it?
Have you studied the opportunities of getting a job with your HND in the present labour market?
Have you assessed the opportunities of getting a job with PGD if there is any?
What is the Bsc going to offer you?
My advice to you is to do an evaluation of your HND qualification Vis a viz what it can offer you in the labour market.
Has technology taken over your Field? If so invest time in learning the new technological trends of your Field, upskill your self,be informed and I bet you,you will be able to make better decisions for your self.
Build a strong CV from practical learning not academic learning.
Consider professional exams in your field and you will in a very short time become an authority in your field.
As a statistician go and learn data science, you will be very relevant in many organisations.

Career / Re: 4 Things You Should Never Include On Your Resumě by Kennyquestt: 2:41pm On May 12, 2022
Mczigx:
Everyone wants to get their dream job, but sometimes it can be hard to get even a foot in the door. The first step to getting a great job is having a great resume.

If you're applying for jobs and no one is responding, you might have made some common mistakes on your resume. Here are four things you should never include on your resume, and also some tips for writing a great one.

1.Your personal information like date of birth, age, marital status, sex, etc. The reason why most persons include some of these on their resumes is because they see other persons doing it. They've never stopped to ask themselves 'how does including this information on my resume make me a better candidate for the job or internship'

2. Unrelated work experiences and skills: Know what skills are related to the job you want and what isn't important. If it's not relevant, leave it off! If I'm applying for the role of a front desk officer, my previous experience working as a video creator or graphic designer shouldn't be stated on my resume as these two don't relate.

3.Photograph: While a photograph can be helpful if you're applying for a job where your appearance is important (like modeling or acting), most employers will be more interested in your skills than how you look. For some countries especially in Europe, this is accepted but in other countries, it's a no no.

4.Reference: This section should also be taken off from your CV as it's of no importance. Instead of including the contact and address of your referees, just write 'to be provided on request'.

If you're careful about including only the right things on your resume and leaving out everything else, your chances of being called for an interview would improve greatly.

#careeradvice #job

I am a recruiter and I can tell you for free that one of the first CVs we shove aside are the CVs with no Date of Birth. Your employer is very interested in it.
Your Gender is also required, marital status may not be as much important but adding it is not a bad idea.
Photography-You are right
Unrelated skills-You are right
Reference-pls some recruiters find it offensive seeing that narration " to be provided on request"
Bottom line is understand the Nigeria Labour market Vis a Viz recruitment, remember you CV finally gets into the hands of your potential employer who will not start calling for missing details.
I have been seeing this new styles of CV and I think it is not really for the Nigerian Environment.
Nigerian Employers want to know you before meeting you.

The major security issue in Kano at moment is phone snatchers. So be very careful when you are in kano.Security tips_ don't use your phone on the street in the open. Screen and select the keke you might want to hop in.

the literacy level on nairaland is becoming too low for my liking. Illiterates everywhere. What will the zero import duty on machinery do to an economy? Boost the industries which will in turn create emploment and economy of the area. What would an increase in import duty do to an economy? Increase revenue, encourage local production and inturn employment. Okay!
Hmmm Mr literate how market, with all your ignorant economic analysis that you don't even know how to marry indices yet you call people illiterate. So how is your economy now?
