1.) because ethnicies wanted to control other ethnicities after independence.
2.) their country was already heavily militarized with arms proliferation all over place, you could buy a gun in the open market as you would buy bread.
3) Decades of continous war and oppression, ensured that education and civility wouldn't thrive. This gave birth to a largely toughened, illiterate population not afraid to shed blood.

Nigeria is more relatively educated, infact what the SE/SS have endured in the hands of the fulani, the south sudanese would go to war 10 times over it. why? Literacy and Civility breeds tolerance but tolerance also has it's limits.
