3z - x is still y.

Wrong, sir. It is: If x = y + 3z.... then x - 3z = y. Thanks.

More examples:
-9 + 6 =
-9 = ///////// (9 sticks)
+6 = ////// (6 sticks)
Now make one stick cancel the other, you will have 3 sticks left at the minus (-) side.
So, -9 + 6 = -3. Clear?
Which one is easier for you: Method 1 or 2?
Now, Using any method, do these:
1. -4 + 8 =
2. -5 - 9 =
3. +10 - 8 =
4. -5 + 12 =
5. +11 - 8 =
6. - 6 + 6 =
7. -6 + 3 =
8. - 5 + 4 =

Like I said earlier, Minus (-) means debt while Plus (+) means credit.
Therefore -4 + 6 means you owe #4 but you have #6. When you pay your debt, you will still have #2 left.
Thus: -4 + 6 = 2. Understood?
Another method you can use is representing the numbers with sticks or strikes (lines).
For example:
-4 + 6 will be equated to
-4 = //// that is 4 sticks
+6 = ////// that is 6 sticks
Then one stick cancels another stick
You will find out that you are left with just 2 sticks at the + side.
Thus: -4 + 6 = +2 or 2.

I will begin today's class with the explanation of Method 1:
It works this way:
You will regard minus (-) as a debt you owe...while plus (+) is the money you have (own).
Therefore, -3 + 2 means that... You owe somebody #3 but you have just #2... when you pay; of course you will still be owing #1.
Thus -3 + 2 = -1. Understood?
Another example: -5 + 7 =
This means you owe somebody #5 but you have #7 with you. When you pay, it means you will still be having #2 with you...which is a plus.
Thus: -5 + 7 = +2 or 2. In mathematics, you can remove the + and write just the number... but this is not so with minus. If you have a minus, you must put it.
More examples:
-5 + 8 = 3
-6 + 2 = -4
-3 -2 = -5. etc
TRY THESE
1. -4 + 6 =
2. -5 -8 =
3. +4 - 10 =
4. -7 + 5 =
5. + 8 - 6 =
6. -11 + 11 =
7. - 8 + 16 =
8. - 6 + 5 =

What if you have:
-3 + 2 =
-5 + 3 =
Do you still know the answers?
