Football trivia Guys.

Name the player to score in 7 different competitions in one season. Chelsea fans should know this.

Is it just me, or isn’t it senseless to tell players not to hug each other during goal celebrations, yet those same players closely mark each other on set-pieces huh
I swear it's ridiculous. I don't know the rationale about that like it's going to prevent anything.

It was even that era that they did more skillful things. Now, you don't waste time. Cut one, and shoot.
Footballers nowadays are over pampered and protected especially the talented ones. Now football is less of a contact sport. Breath on Neymar/Messi/Hazard and the ref is calling a foul 9 times out of ten. It has become too rigid and tactics oriented.

Lol... Messi has both speed and strength in abundant quantities...

The type of dribbling you credit Ronaldo for has also been done by Messi...

So a person can dribble in the tiniest of spaces against numerous defenders but if given more space against fewer defenders, he won't be able to dribble?
Messi does not beat players because he has strength and pace. His ball control is the reason he can run through 2 to 3 challenges and still have the ball glued to his feet. He doesn't dribble like Ronaldo. Their is no much difference between how iniesta and Messi beat players.

He did not have Messis dribbling. Messi needs much less space to dribble. Ronaldo cannot dribble through 8 parked men. Messi is unique in that aspect.

Not all dribbling are mate. Henry or Mbappe style of dribbling requires much space. Ronaldo De Lima less so, Ronaldinho or Maradona even less. . . .and Messi needs the least amount of space to dribble from all footballers I've witnessed.
The post meant Messi dribbling ability not same style of execution. Just because Messi has more ball control in tight spaces doesn't mean he is a better dribbler. Messi has better control of the ball, Ronaldo has the speed advantage and his physical strength to bully defenders. On a break away face to face with two defenders Ronaldo for me but in the middle of the field surrounded by 3 players then Messi. I will still rate Ronaldo dribbling ability above his.

This is Mourinho speaking about a 19yr old Ronaldo. At 19 he was already the best player in the world.

"Ronaldo, El Fenomeno. Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi have had longer careers, they have remained at the top every day for 15 years.
"However, if we are talking strictly about talent and skill, nobody surpasses Ronaldo [Nazario]. When he was at Barcelona with Bobby Robson, I realised that he was the best player I'd ever seen take to the field.
"Injuries killed a career that could have been even more incredible, but the talent that that 19-year-old boy had was something incredible."

Thunder fire injuries.
It's the Nesta quote about him that i always laugh about. Here it is.

“The worst experience I ever had was playing against Ronaldo when we faced Internazionale in the 1998 UEFA Cup Final in Paris. He’s an incredible player. I have watched that game on video so many times since then, trying to work out what I did wrong. We lost 3-0 but I don’t think now it was my fault. Ronaldo was simply unstoppable. He is so quick he makes everyone else look as if they are standing still.”

.Please we're talking modern era so don't muddy the waters by referring to s time when they used to wear Timberland boot to play football.

Anything from the mid 80s please. The landscape was to different to draw any other comparison.

Anyway, Ronaldo never replicated his 47 goals so there's nothing to suggest that he could do it again...

Let's not forget that R9 won WPOTY on 3 occasions...but he only managed that 47 goals once in those 3 year's

R9 had his elite one hot season. That's all.

But his one hot season, is Messi's baseline.

Scoring 73 goals in this era of football will never be replicated. It's not training...it's talent.
ok

LMFAO......What bullshit first mover advantage is that guy is talking about lol. Ronaldo was doing at 19/20 what Messi was doing at 23 and Cronaldo 26. Without the injuries, the greatest player ever. With the injuries, he is only 2nd to Maradona.
I still remember before the 98 world cup how the entire competition was built around a young Delima Ronaldo leading his country and boy he didn't disappoint. He tore the entire tournament to shreds. The fact that the world has seen Maradonna but still rave about a young Ronaldo should tell everyone how ridiculous talented he was. The first mover advantage don't ever Carry weight when the world has seen the exploits of Maradona coupled with other great players around that era as well.

The advances in sports science alone can account for some of that shine.

Like I said a big reason why Ronaldo stood out is simply because nobody was doing it like him back then.

Tactics weren't as advanced, players weren't as fit.

These days, a centre back like zouma is one of the fastest players at Chelsea. Footballers these days are running 10-13 kilometres per game.

Thats why it was harder for the likes of Messi and Ororo to get an early start like De Lima. The level of competition was quite simply better.

De Lima scored 47 goals in his best ever season. That limit still holds true today as the goal scoring threshold that defines truly elite attackers.

20 goals is the minimum return for a decent striker.

30-40 goals is the usual ball park for the truly elite Strikers in the game.

Sometimes, an elite striker has one very hot season and breaks the 40 goal mark, like maybe Luis Suarez or Zlatan...

But only two players in the world have hit the 60 goal mark

And only one has scored 73 in one season.

It's not a matter of injury. R9's 47 goals is an example of pushing the limits of what's humanly possible.

Most elite strikers will never reach that milestone. And the ones that do will only ever do so on 1 occasion.

The only people who repeated the trick over and over again are Ororo and Messi.

The only person to score that 73 goals is Messi.

That's Messi's own version of the one hot season that Suarez, Ibra and R9 have.

That's pure talent. No level of coaching, training and diet can get you there if you don't have it. That's why it's never happened before, and won't happen again.
I am still not grabbing your point. He scored 73goals and he as well never replicated it so it was one off. If Suarez could scored 59goals playing for Barcelona and I have little to no doubt in my mind that a fit prime Fat Ron could easily pull those figures. Gerd Muller pulled 85goals in a calendar year and other impressive goals feat so it's not like both are doing things the football world hasn't seen before in terms of goalscoring.

I said it previously. No footballer in the history of soccer has more naturally ability and talent than Ronaldo.
Let's put it this way... He had Cristiano's pace, power and speed. Coupled with Messi's dribbling, finishing and technique. If only he had Cristiano fitness record.

Nahhh.

Ronaldo had first mover advantage, in that nobody was doing it like him.back then. He was the only striker that was roaming the field and drimbling people left and right.

By the time Messi came along, we had seen R9, Henry, Kaka, Dinho perform such actions on a regular basis.

It was still spectacular but it wasn't new anymore.

Messi has been a top 2 player for 11 years. Top 3 for 12.

I know there's an argument that Ronaldo suffered game changing injuries, which I can accept.

But when you look at the sheer number of goals Messi has scored, even injury can't account for it.

Ronaldo's peak was at Barcelona where he scored 47 goals in all competitions. Messi has matched that once, and beaten it six times.

No amount of training can help you score 73 goals in a single season.
Well people have seen maradonna and his exploits plus other great players as well before Ronaldo so first mover argument don't cut it. Ronaldo was not goal shy. He had over 200career goals at the age of 23. Messi at that same age don't come close. That's why we always say injury ruined his career.
Like someone pointed out before even Suarez banged 59goals playing for Barcelona yet he has nothing on Fat Ron. Place Fat Ron in one of those Messi teams and he drop exactly those figures if not more.

Delima was great but No one has more natural talent than messi..
Unless that person must be an alien
Well most will say he is Messi but with more pace, flair and strength without the passing ability. Its debatable but for me Delima is above Messi but not by much. The fact he won 3 WPOTY despite his recurrent injuries should tell you he was an Alien.

Messi from 18 to 22 was not talked about in the same breathe or feared by defenders as DeLima Ronaldo was. Ronaldo at 19 was considered by most to be the best player in the world. Messi and DeLima are great players but when it comes to naturally ability and talent then Delima is number 1.

But Thuram played right back for France.
He was shifted as a Rightback for France because they had Desailly and Blanc as a pairing which was complimentary but then he returned as a CB under Santini at the Euros.
At club level, he played almost exclusively as a CB. For Parma and then Juventus.

Thuram should not be classified as a fullback. He was a centreback. 100% Cafu over the other two.

I love Robben. He was so underrated through out his career. Why did Chelsea even sell him because I know he was good in his first season. Was it injury or lose of form? Hazard and Robben on both wings for you guys would have been hot. You sold Robben and replaced him with Malouda if I remember correctly.
Robben had to go . He was just too injury prone after the first two seasons. Malouda was actually great at Lyon. It's a mystery why he never played at that same level at Chelsea.
