Messi deserves it because he had a good balance of individual contributions (Over 50 goals & assists in 2021) and trophies (Copa America & Copa Del Rey) where he was the main contributor to winning those trophies (best player in both competitions).

Lewandowski has slightly better individual stats than Messi but doesn't score high in the area of trophies or impact in high value competitions (Copa america is considered more significant than Bayern's annual Bundesliga celebrations) (Also didn't have any outstanding game in the UCL to boost his sole Bundesliga fireworks).

Jorginho scores the highest in trophies won but is embarrassingly low on individual contributions. I mean this is someone that was regularly subbed of the Italian team at the Euros and almost cost them the title with his missed penalty. In the UCL, Kante, Mount, Havertz and Giroud were the main drivers of Chelsea's win during the campaign.

So on the balance of it, Messi should win the award and there is nothing pained haters like you can do about it.

Balon D'or nomination is an award issued based on individual performance. Winning the award is dependent on how other players performed in that particular year.

Let's assume the stats that gets Messi nominated this year is the same stats Sanchez had in 2016.

In 2016, Sanchez had a good stats. Was his individual performance Balon D'or worthy despite his 48goals and assists combined? No, because others had better stats.

In 2016, winning Copa America was not enough to get Sanchez nominated because his individual performance was dwarfed by other players compare to Messi whose individual stats can only be matched by Lewandoski in 2021.

In 2016, Sanchez was not EPL top Scorer nor Best Player but in 2021, Messi topped goal chart in Spain and had the highest goal contribution in Europe.

1. You are missing the basic point. Messi has played all the positions except goal keeping, central defence and side back.

2. Messi has played central forward, Second striker, left wing, right wing, attacking midfield, central midfield and at some point in games, defensive midfield. As Pep, one of the most respected and experienced coaches would say, Messi is number 9, 10, 11, 8, 7, 6 and 4.

3. Most attackers don’t maintain the position the play. That someone is a striker on paper does not mean they maintain that position. Messi as a striker is not the same as Cavani or Lewandoski as striker. Most times, Messi is a false 9 meaning he is a coded midfielder whose job is to draw center backs into the field to create pockets of space for wingers and some central midfielders to exploit. Only creative players do that. Aside Messi, Firmino and Van Persie, we’ve not really had much false 9s that were effective. Similarly, Ronaldo is a traditional false left winger who starts at the left wing but cuts in centrally. So he is basically number 11 and 9.

4. Ronaldo only plays two positions. Number 9 and number 11. You only see him japa to the right wing (7) if the defender on the left wing is too tough for him.
