President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr. Dayo Aladebeye as the sixth substantive Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ado- Ekiti. According to the letter appointing Aladebeye dated 1st March, 2018 and signed by Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, the appointment is with effect from 23rd February, 2018. Oladebeye before his latest appointment was earlier appointed as the Acting Rector on 18th December, 2017 following the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past Rector, Dr. Theresa Akande. According to a statement on Tuesday by the Deputy Registrar, Information, Mr. Ade Adeyemi-Adejolu, Oladebeye is the first alumnus of the Polytechnic to rise to the position of Rector. Oladebeye, 55, graduated from the institution with Distinction in Mechanical Engineering in 1986 and joined the services of the Polytechnic as a Technologist in 1987. The new rector holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering rising through the ranks to become a Chief Lecturer, the highest academic appointment in a Polytechnic, in 2007. He had at various times served three times as Head of Department, Dean of the School of Engineering and Deputy Rector for four years.

Gunmen have kidnapped a 95-year-old man, Azuoma Akagba and his 13-year-old grand-daughter, Chiamaka, in Irete community, Owerri West local government area of Imo State. A relative of the octogenarian said the victims were abducted at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. He said the kidnappers stormed the compound and picked Pa Azuoma who was relaxing outside his room. A non-governmental organisation known as Church Must Vote has appealed to Christians across the country to be conscious of their voting rights in elections. Mr Ikechukwu Nmor, the Communication Manager of the group, made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja at a news conference. He called on Christians to come out en masse and participate in the 2019 general elections and beyond. He said that research had shown that Christians had not been participating in previous elections as they ought to have been doing “Therefore, as the 2019 general elections approach, it is important that the elections and the outcome reflect a representation and inclusive decision of all demographics, age, gender and beliefs. “Most Christians in Nigeria hide behind the mask of praying for the nation and abstain from the arena of politics, yet the church remains the most vocal critic of the government. “It is not enough to pray behind closed doors and wait in sheer optimism for progress to be achieved “So, we say to our brothers and sisters in Christian faith to vote and pray,’’ he said.
