That is the point of the term unalienable rights which is in the Declaration of Independence. That people have certain rights which the government was created to protect, that can't be taken away and that is independent of what anyone else says. I believe that Bodily autonomy is one of those rights.

So, if a right is unalienable, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about it.

Just to quickly follow up
1.) It's a longer discussion of Bodily Autonomy than I want to have. But I think at the minimum to have Bodily autonomy you can not be inside the body of someone else.
2.) How society views the fetus and how society feels pregnant women are again irrelevant. You're feelings/views don't matter when it comes to my rights. I can call you an ugly idiot, which could upset you, but would that matter as to my right to Free Speech? Why then would your feelings matter to my right of freedom of bodily decisions?

2) how society views the fetus is important. Because, wether you like it or not, societal views significantly impacts every individual and determines what laws society operates by.

You can call me an "idiot," and I have the right to drag you to court. If society finds calling someone an "idiot" as harmful, then I can accuse you of breaking the law. The feelings of society matter because based on those feelings, we formulate laws. Unless, you're on the ten commandment ship, you should know empathy, sympathy played a huge role in how as a species our laws came to be.

Agreed to a point, I believe autonomy when it comes to your body should be absolute as I believe your person/body is the greatest form of freedom. So, how society views the fetus becomes irrelevant. Even though there may be another person growing inside of you, until that person becomes fully autonomous, your autonomy should supercede. It does sux to say that, but I think that makes the most sense.

So as to Society, your autonomy should only be restricted if it affects another autonomous person's right to autonomy. So, in your example of the drugs, you are asking someone else to do something for you. That makes sense for the state to regulate.

This would be true if the woman was aborting the baby by herself and with no support from society whatsoever.
No lady can independently abort the baby because she still needs the medical equipment and emotional support of society. Society has to invest funds and man hours to develop the safest route for the procedure.

Therefore, like my "wish for drug" example, her autonomy to self infringes on the society's autonomy to refuse her request.

Consequently, it exposes the falsehood in the claim that "autonomy with respect to body is/should be absolute." Ideally, it sounds plausible, but when you "touch grass" it's not.

Another problem that arises from your argument is the subjective view of autonomy. It's not properly defined. A 1 month old baby is still fully dependent on the mother and society and cannot cater for itself.

It's safe to say it isn't autonomous, just like someone with complete paralysis is also dependent on society to cater to their needs. Can we, based on the claim that self-maintainance equates autonomy, "remove" individuals who aren't capable of fending for themselves since they aren't autonomous?

How society views the fetus is indeed relevant. Society is made up of people who were, once upon a time, fetuses themselves. Another example, society always mourns the death of a pregnant woman even more because that's two deaths.

In scientific community, the extraction of stem cells from said fetuses is blanketed with controversy.In fact, the practise of harveting embryonic stem cells is considered unethical. We must now ask, why does society, on one hand recognize the person hood of the embryo and, on the other, dismisses the personhood of same embryo. The answer is politics!

Let's randezvous back to pregnancy. The news of pregnancy, from a societal standpoint, is worth celebrating---It signifies continuity. Flip the coin: the loss of pregnancy can be devastating. Why does something that seems so insignificant cause so much impact?

So, yes, contrary to your claim, society cares a whole lot about fetuses. So much so, that there's a whole science about it.

This states rights argument when it comes to Personal freedoms is quite odd to me. You argue that others shouldn't impose their views on a Federal level but are comfortable enforcing your views on Personal freedoms to others on a state level. Why don't you allow each city to decide if they want to allow abortion or better yet each neighborhood. Explain why you stop at the state level.

The argument on pro-abortion versus anti-abortion largely depends on how society perceives the being of a fetus. Autonomy isn't absolute. For instance, there are some drugs that the pharmacists always ask me to present a doctor's prescription before selling them to me---even against my dying wish and at no harm to society (except my own, of course).

By virtue of being part of society, our claim to autonomy is restricted, and with good reasons. You can't force people who perceive a fetus as its own person to accommodate laws that threaten the "lives" of those fetuses. Mind you, that doesn't make you any more "progressive" than they are.

Note, the argument of personhood doesn't hold water here, either. you'd have to define what you mean by person and how we can measure it.
