Mali is the epicenter of the Songhai Empire, and it extended into parts of Burkina Faso, Niger, and a very negligible part of Nigeria. The Songai coalition had been formed by Mali, Burkina Faso & Niger already and they are willing to defend their Kingdom.

I am remember when the the Northern party won the 1963 elections with Zik, the Sarduna turned down being the prime minister but instead chose Tarawa Balewa to represent him. The regions had clout then.

It is like Atiku turning down opportunity to be VP rather choosing to be the Governor of Adamawa state.

I think because in the olden days of Regionalism. The regions were more powerful than the centre. The centre only dealt with foreign affairs, the military and currency. The regions control the resources.

Having said that how come the Eastern Region which was controlling the oil in Nigeria did not make Eastern region the Dubai of Africa. At least they were controlling the resources in Eastern region.
